View Full Version : Final Entries. Comp 8 (Movie Star and Stuff)

DUE DATE: September 2nd: 12:00am (GMT)

Ok, what I need to see:

- 1 final image, this can be a collage of renders, or just one. (look at the winners gallery for ideas). Try to keep it clean. We will be judging on the character, so make sure we can see it. Also make sure your character is the focus.

- either a scaled down image of your texture(s), or a link to your full size texture(s). Full size would be better.

- 1 image of your wire frame. You can treat this the same as your final image. At least two different angles of your character. Include your polycounter, not just a polycount.

Keep your entry in one post. This will help keep the thread clean and easy to read when time for voting.

DUE DATE: September 2nd: 12:00am (GMT)

Voting will be the following week, if you submit, you must vote, it's the right thing to do. :halo:

Maximus - 2420 tris

Didn't hit the poly limit, but after starting to move the rig around, I can see places that need more polys. Still, this if my first low poly comp, so I'm happy with the result and it was a lot of fun to do. I put a scaled down version of my texture map in with the wire (hope that's ok). The textures could have used more work, but I need to sleep - I work tomorrow.

Lots of well made and original entries in here so far, it's going to be hard to judge! (Although Orochi hit a soft spot by doing Cammy, she's awesome!)

See you all in the next comp, and if you've got a few hours to spare, trying giving the pinball machine animation challenge a shot.

close fourth would be frostsnake but it was a little heavy on the normal maps
or lucashug if he didnt make bender so rusty.

overall it was a tough decision because all of the entries were great!
if i could have entered i doubt i would have even made it to 5th. live and learn i guess!

what ever happend to the chibi snake? i would have given that model a 10/10! if he gave it a good texture it would have been my first place pick.

Textures (9-10) - excellent work from every point of view, the texture space culd be optimized with some trick here and there but it's ok. 1 more point for your balaced use of normal maps and specular.

Model is amazing, poly flow is sexy. The only thing I can say about it is on your limb deformation cuts, you seem to have them on the back of the leg and front of the arm. Not sure if that is needed, but still looks really good.

The textures look perfect, the hair looks great and the gloss on those Nike cortez shoes looks realistic. After checking out your model it makes me wanna go watch the damn movie hehe.

What can I say? It looks absolutely beautiful. I really have no idea who the character is, but it doesn't matter. It's a really elegant model - I love the clean, crisp details - superb work.

A real fun model - the wireframe looks great and the likeness is spot-on, and has a cartoony feel to it that is very appealing.

A very nice looking model - I could easily imagine this appearing in a game. It was a bit hard rating this one because it was so different from the others - being a robot made it a bit hard to compare somehow. A great effort though, well done!

Man, I saw your entry and it floored me. That's an outstanding model. I typically despise Anime in general, but I do like your model. The whole piece is well done, the alpha maps are awesome, textures, especially the wings are wonderful. My only complaint is the same as the one up there a bit. You need to tighten up your UV coordinates. You could get a lot more detail in their if you did that, but otherwise, you've got first by me :D

Awesome :D The textures never made it, but if they had? Man, I'd of had to flip a coin between you and Mike. The model is just awesome and I love the hand wire. The model is very very well done and the textures were already layed out ready to go. I wish you'd been able to finish it, and I sincerely hope that you'll post her in the LowPoly section if you can and finish her up, we'd all like to see her come back.

Model (8-10)
The model is great, really hits the original 2d character on the head. Everything seems like it needs to be where it needs to be. The only thing I can see that I would have changed, was the amount of loops in the shoulder area. But that’s just a personal thing.

Textures (7-10)
The texture matches the 2d a bit too well. It seems plane. No depth or anything. It would have been nice to see some hue variations through the coat. Maybe some folds or crease in the pants and coat. Just to add that little something to show it’s 3d and not 2d.

Second Place-

Model (7-10)
Model is good, but it lacks something. Looking at the wire frame, it doesn’t look that interesting. I know the point of the comp was to match a certain someone, but sometimes you need to make changes to push the image.

Textures (8-10)
Textures are great. Even though they were mirrored you can’t really tell. Good job with that. Usually you can see the seem where the model was cut. Some stretching in the face, but that is an easy fix.

Third Place-

Simple – Minded 14/20

Model (9-10)
The model is straight awesome. Even though you went with a concept made by a friend, instead of an image from the cartoon or comic, you can still tell who she is. Great job on cutting down the poly’s to get the model under the limit. Too bad you had to get rid of the hammer and the gun.

Textures (5-10)
If you just had more time. Right now the texture is plan. The basic color does match the concept/idea of who the girl was and the group she ran with in the cartoon, but the overall texture is not done.

-The hipoly is very impressive! Especially the muscles, but they weren't shown much in the final model since they weren't empasized... (lack of texture maybe...) But I definitely love the Hipoly!!!

-Kakashi! Overall, he looks great, but looking at the details, the flaws are kinda obvious... Especially his nails... But still, nice work!

Model (10-10) Excellent use of polys, really tight.
Textures (8-10)Great texturing too, but doesn't stand up so well at close range. Still, from a distance, it's pretty exceptional.

As for me,

Didn't quite make the deadline -- Looking for work at the moment, plus went to Ireland for a week. Anyway. It kinda worked in my favour as I managed to add a few more polys worth of detail and got him looking pretty sweet. :D

The main reason for the first place, is because of the original use of the alphamap and single poly geometry. But I think it would cause problems within a game.
The normal map on the wings are good too

Nah, the links I posted are enough I guess...

Oh, yeah... Here are some little tips/tricks I usually do in comps: make the characters pretty with a great presentation! Viewers mentally think it's good, even if it isn't. (Just like mine...) And I always choose girls because most modelers are men. (And i'm not gay to make pretty boys!) For the next comp, try to make the angels sexy!!! (heheh, joke)

I'm going to be a evil otaku with these votes but I'm just honest :roll:

First Place: Belldandy, Beutiful model. You really have captured the sould of Belldandy. I like the textures and mesh is clean. Model (9), Texture (8)

Second Place: BiG ToE, You really used your budget well :D I love your kakashi model, it really looks like him. Textuse space is well used. My only crit is his hair texture. This model really makes me want to play a naruto game... Model (8), Texture (8)

Third Place: Mike_inel: One of the best works in this comp. It's really beutiful! I was ready to vote you for the first place, but It's bit hard to judge the technical aspects from the final pictures you posted + you could have used your texture space a bit better. Model (10), Texture (7)

+ Simple-minded: Textures need work but the mesh it self is 10 point material!

Congrats to everyone in this contest! I didn't have time to finish my model because of school and work but I learned a lot.. and I think it's the main idea of this competition. Thanks to everyone!

They don't work for me, course, neither do the tutorial images. My Old computer ran them fine. I hate this one... Can't wait to make my new one...
