View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge 115 - Air Freshner
Marty_McFly-3DT
07-09-2006, 02:39 AM
The rules are simple
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modelling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified.
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containg the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.
7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the alocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizeable.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions
Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 13th of September 2006
Subject - Air Freshner
Air Freshner: They come in all types of shapes and sizes... but are made for making a room smell pretty.
Have Fun and Good Luck!

Nice topic and model Marty I have already a couple of ideas in mind! :D

Ok I have a great concept, but I lack the skill to pull it off. I involves a skunk in a suit with many holes spreading his/her unique scent throughout their community, while the other skunks praise him/her. But anyway Mcfly where are the results of the heatsink, because there were some oustanding entries.
Pablo Ferro
07-09-2006, 03:30 AM
YEAH!! I know I wonīt win anything but I canīt wait for the results to come out :D

Noo!!! I WAS DOING MY FIRST ENTRY WITHOUT SAVING AND MY COMPUTER CRASHED! :grr: :grr: :grr: ....gess I have to start over again :D
Marty_McFly-3DT
07-09-2006, 04:29 AM
Save and save often... that mantra works twice as much in doing 3d as it does for playing video games! Sorry to hear about your crash though... check and see if you have an auto backup copy. Max does auto saves by default, although I'm not sure about other software.

But I did like modelling them :)
I started making this one yestaday while the last one was rendering. This one took longer to model, because of the center shapes, but I got there just in time. I left it to render over night, which wasn't necessery cos it only took 43 mins lol :D:wall:

gkid - Not laughing here at all. my only crits are as follows, there's nothing wrong with your modelling, it's nice and clean and well made. the only problems for me are that firstly you've not got it anti aliasing, which is why you're getting jagged edges, and you could do with another light from the right hand, that's just my opinion. Other than that, looking good. And a very nice starter! Also a warm welcome to the forums :)

...especialy how to make things look like plastic and how to use turbosmooth!
Thx, LionFox!I decided to throw together a small tutorial on how to get better squared off edges in your models. It's not the only way to do things, but it helps get nice crisp results. I'm not sure what version of 3D Studio Max you're using, but I did it using Max 8... I don't remember if Max 7 has the "Connect" option for editable polys... but if it doesn't, the cuts can be made with either the slice tool or slice plane... and just make the cuts very close to the edges. I hope that wasn't too confusing... :wall:
Anyway, you can download the tutorial here (http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=4FB5EC412562FE63) . The file will be available for 7 days or 100 downloads. (But I can always upload it again.) Enjoy. :)

Strattus :
tnx mate..im happy u like it..and nice green blury material on ur render:)
h2k1 :
tnx friend for ur comment...about ur quastion..i prefer meshsmooth because U can set 2 kind of option ,one in viewport and one in render time,i usually set the view port to 1 and render to 2 or 3..turbosmooth is same in action but doesnt have such like option....and about the 2nd quastion...if U mean the part that has the apple and cherry picture...they are 2 seperat objects, and i textured them seperatly...if u mean the button that is red, they are the red material that i set in multi/sub-object...by the way if ur quastion is how to texture the object whit different texture...i should say that its easy ..just need to set ur material to composite...composite let u use many map on one object...but the point is if ur map doesnt have any alpha map ,they cover each oder...and this shows only 1 map (if u need help on how to have Alpha map and so on ..feel free to ask me...I'll ansewr as soon as possible).....hope this help U;)
alidanesh : tnx :D but i wanted to know more how did u texture that glass and the plastic? its the same object? and i donw know how to make alpha maps  tnx!

h2k1:
ye they are diffrent object...but it was simple...after that i modeled the object and cut the shape of glass part,i selected the faces that would be galass.and the deattach them to new object and so i arrange the glass material for that...
Alpha map:
about the alpha map i should say...when U want to have some sticker .shape..or other thing on ur model U should use Alpha map...when U draw the texture in photoshop and bring it to max U dont want the background of that..U want only the shape..so to do it U should have Alpha channel...that means the area U want will be shown only...to do it,when u draw ur texture in photoshop the beside the Layer pallette..click on Channel...make new channel...this work black and white...where ever U draw white will be shown later and where ever that is black in this channel will be hidden...so edit it as u want....after all of this to use in Max..only some file format can handel the project....TGA,TIFF...(JPEG cant save ur edited channel)...so save it with channel...then in Max assign the texture to ur object....last thing is after U assign this bitmap to ur object u should un check the premultiplied Alpha(its under Alpha source option)....hhhh...hope that work..;)

Currently having some problems with my account on the forum so unable to post my latest entry so I have added a link to where it can be seen online. I will correct this when my account has been repaired. Not sure if anyone else if having problems uploading attachments?
I purchased this Ambi-Pur especially for the Speed Modelling Comp and did not end up completing all the specific details within the 60mins so in comparison to the original it is only about 70% complete. I have tried to make it look as finished as I can.

tnx friend...ist nothing espesial to my the materials..really nothing ...the plastic part is raytrace material with very low reflection and the glassy part made by redusing the opacity and adding reflection..thsi was the materials but 2 points more than that is :1:lighting that make ur render more real:2:enviroment that ur objects reflect that..U now hdri help u have more realastic enviromnet...adjust these 2 and u see with really simple material U have something...
h2k1:
no I used MR for the renders this week...
about ZB ..i used some comercial DVD to learn it(im little lazy these times cant read pdf and something else prefer to relax i watch) ..i dont know that it help U or not: ''GET INTO ZBRUSH 2...KURV Studios''....Gnomon DVDs are really good too(thegnomonworkshop.com)....but if ur ok with reading text and PDF...the very good PDF written by the producer of ZB..its free about 20 MB...U can download it from the official site of ZB...and take a look at ZB forums(official one)..tones of good information there...

about my 2nd entry that has no pin.:D...i got the idea on net images...its not my original idea....i wanted to attach the images of that, but seems the theedy has problem in database ,and i cant attach the...sorry...by the way this airfreshner may need extra accesories that connect it to plug;)
Joiko: Thanks for comment. It was quiet simple. The stone texture has got a bump map. The metallic look was made with a vraymap and a falloff in it`s reflection channel. Then I played a little bit with the refl. glosiness. For render settings I used a Cutmull-Rom antialiasing filter and I set up my irradiance map to High and thats it. Nothing special :D At least a few words to lightning. There I used the typical "Three Point lightning". There I played with the key light, fill llight and backlight settings, too.
-R3D-: Thanks too. It is used for sauna. This kind of air freshner you hang over hot stones. Next step you put some oil in it and at the bottom of it you have got a metal plug to set up how much oil will drop on the stones.

Well Inspired by -R3D- Commenting, i have to agree this is long overdue, i've browsed through the pages from start to finish and i think i owe you all a proper comment and crits. It's only fair, i'm usually so lazy to comment, but here goes.
Marty Post Entry #01 - Awesome as usual really there Marty the render looks so sweet, i love the modelling, it's clean and well thought out. I love how you've added the little details such as the settings cylinder and the output height of how much, i especially like the liquid dispenser too, the material works well for me with that also. so great entry.
DarkBoost Post #13 - Really great, and yet so very simple, the spline work is spot on, you captured the sizeing and the shape of the tree's to a t. i love the simplicity, and yet it's effectiveness is so so good. I like the spline for the holders too, it looks nice and loose just like a real peice of string etc would. Cool Entry.
yuriyxxx Post #15 - Very nice indeed, the candle looks nice, and the tripodic saucer works well for me. your modelling is very nice and clean, and ordered, and a nice use of materials too. my only crit would be that you have a little too much noise, but other than that, it's a crackin' entry.
Pablo Ferro Post #16 - Excellent modelling, i love this design, a nice and different take on the freshener, a good first try with Mental Ray too i see, i love the blue fragrance cylinders, that blue looks fantastic, i really like this entry alot, very good work.
d3m0ni0 Post #18 - Brilliant entry here! you had me laughing so hard diet coke came through my nose when this loaded on my screen! Really simple modelling looking at it, but with the mesh smoothing it's worked out great. i do hope it's fresh smelling though.
cango Post#23 - A Warm welcome to the forums, and a very nice first entry coming in from you, it's a good model, a nice different take on the subject matter which is always good news, i'm looking forward to seeing more from you in the coming SMC's.
Diabolos Post #24 - Awesome modelling yet again from you, you manage to deliver great looking aswell as modelled entry week in week out, this looks stunning, the modelling is well structured and thought out, and the render looks great. It's got a clean crisp look to it, and looks as though it would work well. I especially love the little LG logo, but love it even more that you've chosen to model the logo instead of using a selection tag. Looks great, really good work!
hammering 3D Post #25 - Really convincing entry you've got there, always a quality render, and nice modelling too, i love the pureness of the white you've got there, and i love the accompanying box too, the inside cardboard looks so real!
alex-7 Post #28 - Nice entry indeed, the good old spray freshener, nice modelling, i really like the nozzle and a great render too, nice to see someone make the fragrance spray aswell
-R3D- Post #34 - Well what can i say about this one lol, simple and easy modelling, very effective render, especially with the windscreen etc, but god i still to this day hate that frog with a passion! i like it for it's modelling purposes, but if i hear that frog song ever again on someone's phone i'll stamp on there phone! :) Nice simple modelling, and just noticed the very nice intricate modelling on the holding thread, good work!
Joiko Post #40 - Love it! the modelling looks great, i really like your style, the way you've put the freshener together really appeals to me, i like your little name on it, and the electric plug works well for me Nice render and i love that blue for the fragrance pod.
-R3D- Post #41 - Very Good modelling indeed! i'd buy that, it looks real, the render is great, and i like the style again, and the clean modelling, love the little details too, such as the back in which to hang it, i wouldn't have thought about that at first.
H20 Post #42 - Another entry i'd class in the simple but very effective category, a great entry, lovely clean simple modelling, i like the look and style of the cherries, and i like the little hook detailed with it also. great render too, nice.

Thanks for the comments on my last entry. And thanks to -R3D- and ClassicGamer for those all-encompasing posts. Speaking of which, some thoughts on a few of the last posts:
darkboost really good. It's amazing how much having the object to look at from all sides can help.
yuriyxxx nice ionic duo (interestingly, the second one was the inspiration for my first entry - kind of neat to see the original modeled here too)
Strattus I really love that matte black plastic material you've achieved
twiddlefinger wow...the model and materials are outstanding. Having said that, I think I would've liked the composition a little more (if that's possible) if you'd used a different material for the back plane instead of the same tiles.
alidanesh not much to say except great job as always, though you should be used to hearing that by now.
PerfectStranger Welcome to the forums! and that's a nice entry to come in with. (I think it may be the color, but for some reason that diffuser makes me think of coffee... ;) )

ok, so I go through all that, and then forget to post entry #2...
I found this air freshener in my bathroom at work. Scanning a cylinder seemed like way too much, so all textures are hand (mouse/tablet) drawn. Spent about 20 minutes fiddling with the spline trying to get the shape right, leaving me plenty of time to go through two nozzle attempts (wasted 10 minutes trying to do it with splines. That wasn't going well, so I froze it and used the basic shape as a guide for quickly box modeling the nozzle). Feel free to ask/comment about anything else
Software: 3DS Max
Modeling: 60 minutes (had to get that little dot in the middle of the cap)
Texturing: probably close to 2 hours
Rendering: Just a skylight with indirect illumination - cut it down to 45 minutes total.
With any luck, we won't all be disqualified :lame: , but until the uploads are fixed, you'll have to deal with a link:

yuriyxxx:: (#132) Thats nice man! I was gonna model that one but changed my mind for some reason. It's a good mesh, nice and clean. The render is quite nice too, but showing maybe 2 angles that utilize more of the image would probaly show your model off better. I like your entry though, good work.
--Strattus--:: (#135) :) I was also going to model this one, but something stopped me. I like the simplicity of the model, yet it's detail makes it more of an interesting choice to model. You've done it pretty well, good render, accurately modelled text, and nice mats. Though a few points could be moved to smooth parts slightly more, like the upper front edge, but thats only minor. nice model & entry mate. :)
yuriyxxx:: (#139) Now this one is pretty cool, looks a bit like a mask :) Modelled well, clean. good presentation, image is a bit noisey, but Im guessing thats a quick GI render result :) Effective render whatever the reason :) Good job.
ClassicGamer:: (#142) Well Im glad Ive inspired you to comment so thoroughly. I must say thankyou for your views and comments on my entries, They are truely encouraging to say the least. You have helped re-enforce my confidence in my own work once again. And thankyou for commenting on so many entries. Im sure Marty will be pleased that constructive critisism is being dished out :) It does help people so much. Once again, thanks for commenting on my entries, Im glad you like them.. As you can see, Im gonna try staying consistant when it comes to C&C, so I can help others as much as possible. I find it rather satisfying. :) Happy modelling matey :)
Trimyr:: (#158) I love the spline work man! Accurately made. Cap and nozzle are very good too. I also like your texturing work, I have an appritiation for those who create their own textures in an art program, I have done it many time with good results, just like you have this time:) And although it took a while to render, it was worth it, the GI result looks good, shows your model off well. My only suggestion would be to work on the metal material a little bit, and maybe add an HDR environment to add reflections :) but it's a nice entry in all :) great work.
Trimyr
11-09-2006, 06:06 PM
Actually, it is an HDR. With the exception on the bottom of the can, it's all painted metal, so you have slightly blurred reflections with a falloff distance. That's why there's only lights + slight detail in the reflections. Thanks for the comments!

hk21 well, I made it. It's basically just one cylindrically mapped object with 3 different material ID's and blend maps for opacity with each (Label/white paint - White Paint/Rust - Metal/Rust). I started with just dummy maps for color after I was done modeling, so I could see where the lines for the label would end up. After that I added an Unwrap UVW modifier and opened the map in photoshop. Since I had 3 temporary materials set up in a multi/sub-object already, all I had to do was replace those one by one with the material/opacity-for-blend maps I made in photoshop. I know you don't use 3d max, but I assume mapping an object is still pretty similar.
It's not nearly as difficult as it seems. With 2D/graphic design work, your colors have to be perfect. When creating textures for 3d, it's ok if the colors in your texture look flat and gaudy (well, sometimes ok). If you know your colors are right, but they look strange in photoshop, go ahead and render in 3d. Chances are that if you have a good lighting solution, it will come out much closer to what you'd envisioned.
edit: ok, I know that seems horribly confusing and convoluted, but there is some sense in there - despite the fact that it's 2am and I posting instead of sleeping

Well, my model will be coming shortly. Its just rendering, which may take a while.
I first started modelling an air freshner based around the house but couldn't do it. Too detailed, etc.
I then came up with my own design, so, in a while, you'll see :p
I'm loving the work thats come from this speed competition. Its very realistic so far!
Itrs funny though, only a week back was I thinking it'd be kewl to model an airfreshner I have laying around.
Anyhow, here it is:

Ok guys, i've got my 2nd entry finished, but a few comments before i post it up first :)
it's a real shame about the attatchments problem too, i hope it'll be fixed very soon, we'll just have to be patient i suppose. the site was actually down about 15 mins ago, so i'm rather happy i'm able to post this as it's up again.
PerfectStranger Post #156 - A very warm welcome to the forums and the SMC's and what a great entry to start off with too! i like the modelling very much, i see you're a fellow C4D modeller aswell! welcome aboard :) i love the little candle and the flame it looks great, nice use of the lathe nurbs tool aswell with the above saucer. and a nice render also, a great start! well done, nice work!
Trimyr Post #158 - Excellent entry there! Superb modelling, i really like the look of this, the multiple angles are a great addition also, and i really respect you for making those textures yourself, like -R3D- said and many others may do too, i try to make my own textures if i can. I'm a traditionally trained artist, and then i advanced my skills by merging art with computer i have a grade 3 level in desktop publishing, by the end of the course at college i knew more than my tutor lol . So well done for making the textures yourself, they've really worked well. and i love the render, it looks very real and stylish too!
qais Post #170 - Fantastic entry there, and amazingly good for just 15 mins too, nice clean mesh building, and a gorgeous render! lovely little candle and great texturing. great work!
Joiko Post #171 - Another brilliant entry there! i especially like the bump on the plastic in the render, quality modelling as usual, you're getting better and better with every post!
Kage Post #172 - Wow! That's cool! lovely modelling, so good! it's looks almost scientific to me! love the material, and an excellent render also, the modelling is spot on, excellent work!
Frankiller Post #177 - not a bad entry at all, your wireframe puzzles me a bit, is that a software wireframe render? it looks artisticly rendered if you know what i mean. other than that i like your entry, looks nice :)
i'll try to upload my 2nd entry very soon, if not i'll have to use imageshack liek everyone else :(

Hey thanks again for the comments [-r3d- | ClassicGamer for the detailed ones - that takes time] ( I am really busy over Speed animation and LowPoly)
But I have to crack the whip here - there are like five consecutive pages without a single entry - come on everyone - MODEL! :shout:
D,
ClassicGamer:she's the faaaamous Nawal Al Zoghbi (http://www.nawalalzoghbi.net)
Krave, I can see that working. Some nice modelling work :)
My next one will be up in about 15 minutes. Just got to test/render and then composite into Photoshop.

Diabolos - I'll be updating very soon with more than a few models! I've just got back from shopping at Tesco's (not that i wanted to namedrop lol) and i took my digital camera too! my god there were at least 30 different types in the air freshener and fragrances section, i'm modelling at least another 5!!!
It was really funny though because i was looking around at them, and suddenly it was like "oh there's R3D's, there's marty's, there's R3D's again and so on lol i was seeing most of the entries in the shop! it's amazing actually at how accurate you all are with the models too, i recognised them immediatly.
So out of about 15 that i hadn't even seen on here, i've been modelling and will model about another 5! so you can expect some more models from me. i've modelled 3 so far, but i'm ongoing with the rendering/test rendering.
I'll hopefully fill this page up with some more models very soon.
Until then, keep it fresh :) lol
Kind Regards
Classic Gamer

a little off topic i know, but mmmmm she's yummy!!
Now back to modelling, before i get slapped with a large haddock in a monty python style way for deviating :haha: :wall:
CG
Hehe Classic Gamer, I hope you didn't see mine there, otherwise they must have built it straight out of my head :p
Will be looking forward to your next 5 :D
Mines still rendering. I've gone in Vray, and turned on Depth of field, and motion blur, so I assume it'll take a while.

Haha, a Microsoft air freshner. I like that :p Very clean modelling, though I would have suggested another set of cuts to create a 6 way cut possibly in the middle rather than a 4 sided cut.
How have you got those holes? Bump maps? Since it doesn't seem like their on the mesh.

Hi there, so finally i found some time to model my air freshner...I tried to model it like the real one in my room...
You can see i have to renders, which one do you like most, the Dafault render or Mental Ray ? Please respond
The model information is one the picture ( I'm sorry that the picture is soo crowded...i tried to show everything in 800x600
So here it is: Air Freshner (http://img168.imageshack.us/img168/6254/airfreshnerap7.jpg)
here's the reference: Ambi Pur (http://img242.imageshack.us/img242/2447/airue6.jpg)
Kewl UrsiNMC :D
I actually like the Default one best. The lighting seems to look a bit better, and the liquid glows a bit more which looks more realistic to me. In the default scanline though, the reflections/refractions could have done with a bit of antialising, but I like that.
Well done.

It's the Displace from VRay ;)
Ah :p
Heres my second entry as promised. Again, its my own design. Its basically in the description but a lighted fan inside blows the cooled gases through the pipes (different fragerances) and out through the grilled holes on each pipe. It stands on the 2 bottom pipes as they are slightly tilted.
Hope you like :) I'm seriously happy with this one.
I think doing these competitions are going to help me with my modelling, since before now, I've always textured and renderered before finishing the model.
...Realised right after finishing though that motion blur wasn't really needed, haha. The fan must have lost its animation I put on it :dunno: :wall: hehe oh well, still refracted okay across the still blades.
(EDIT: ADDED IMAGE ONTO SITE AS REQUESTED)

Kage nice one man, very creative
UrsiNMC Looks great, just like the reference
Rorschach Very interesting, great model, render and entry!
Well I had some time to spare so I thought I would submit another entry. It is another simple one which is modelled off an actual Incense Burner I have. Still unable to upload the attachment :(
Entry No. 3
Topic: Incense Burner
Program: 3D Studio Max
Modelling Time: ~20mins
Thanks :D
A lovely render made from a rather simple but well modelled effective clean model (I used model more than once didn't I...) :)

Another one , but I am not satisfied with desing (my own), never mind I will post it. Just push the cover on that grey place and delicious odour will full the bathroom.
Everybody great work! I haven't time to do such a monstrous C&C as R3D and ClassicGamer. By the way, thanx very much both of you, I'm so glad you like it!

Hi ..
Many entries there and many nice models, I'm too lazy to comment all of them :D ..
and this is my 2nd ugly model :grr:
http://xs206.xs.to/xs206/06372/3243463242.jpg
What you mean? Thats not ugly :p The only thing that looks slightly out of place is the text (possibly a bump map, or a bad boolean would have sufficed)

rashika-3DT where have you been buddy the forum has attachment issues since Sunday!
Seconded, the entire forum webspace was down last night and around midday too, we've all been having to attach entry via imageshack unfortunatly.
Patiently waiting for it too be fixed, Marty informed up that it's being looked into and worked on

Issue will probably be fixed shortly anyways.

Pablo Ferro :D I love it! That's hilarious
Phantom.cz I see what you mean about the material on the back plate and bottom front, but who cares? It looks great, the model's perfect.
Kage You know, I like it, but I can't help thinking of a teething ring/rattle ;P
Darkboost Nice idea. Did you purposefully make a smiley from the moon and stars? Makes the whole think kinda cute. I think you could've done a better job had you used geometry for the smoke instead of particles though. Typically smoke from something small like incense will rise in a straight line until it's far enough from the heat source to be dispersed by cooler moving air. LOOK HERE (http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/4272/smokesg6.jpg) for what I mean.

The modeling on this one is pretty simple. It was more of an excuse to use this sort of gooey shader I've been working on.
Software: 3DS Max
Modeling: 20 minutes
Rendering: 7h 22m - yes I know it's too bright. No I won't be rendering again ;)
again, imageshack until the attachments are fixed:

Trimyr Nice entry looks great!
I modelled this on an actual Incense Tray which has the moon/stars in this formation. In regards to the smoke, I agree 100% and believe it or not this was the first time I have ever modelled smoke which I copied from the 3DSMAX cigarette smoke tutorial. I learnt afterwards that this option was also available but I had already posted my submission. Maybe next time ;)
alex-7 Nice model and entry, well done!
Rorschach Thanks man
Phantom.cz I agree with 'Kage' looks great, nice entry!

Trimyr, thanks :p least it looks sweet and innocent, which seeems very house friendly to me :D I sort of improved it after the compo finished, to have a sort of snout instead of just a hole where the fan is. Looks alot better, but too late now.
Wow...7 hours for an 800x600 render? Looks good though.

You know, I'm sure they'd be happy to double what you're getting now
Anyhoo, one more entry for this challenge. I remembered that we always used to have these when I was a kid. I know you're probably not supposed to take the top off completely, but I didn't think that applied to 3D, so there you go.
I did the texture for the packaging last, and then changed the material for the cover to match the theme. It wasn't until about 2/3 of the way through the render that I realized I forgot to change the gel color too. :wall: Don't have time for a fix before I leave work either. Oh well. You'll have to take my word that the radioactive looking gel actually smells like flowers.
Software: 3DS Max

Kage Yeah, that gel shader's not exactly processor friendly. Start adding in indirect illumination along with all the SSS, and I just had to let it run until I came in this morning.
You start to think don't you. Would it have looked the same if you didn't use some of those effects on it, but it would have renderered faster.
I think anything longer than 2 hours is too long. Maxwell's just terrible.

codexdelux Welcome to the forums! Nice entry - It makes me think of what a Dr. Seuss air freshener would look like.
alidanesh stop posting those great models and give us a chance too :D . I almost agree with the reflection comments, but if you look at a plug from 18 inches, there's usually not too much reflection going on, or so blurred that it's more like swatches of color.
Hmm... tried to edit my posts and attach the pics but still no luck for me. Doesn't work posting a new reply either. Looks like I missed the window. I'll try again in about 8 hours.

Thanks Trimyr, first speedmodel i've done i think. except on assignment that is:P
The design is acctually from an exhaustpipe, sort of a "use something that makes air UN-fresh" and then transform the object into the opposite.
Was a fun challenge:d
BTW: (if you wonder how it works: UN-fresh air is sucked in and filtered through the exhaustpipe and then keeping the Unfreshness inside while pumping out fresh air. Thus making the air fresh in stead of just treating the symptome by Covering upp the foul air:D)

Sorry guys... it seems like the problem attacks at random! So I'm off to the Labs to see if I can re-sync the Flux Capacitor to the resonant frequency of the forum software.
