software for visual effects

Hi!!
I love doing 3d and now I'm working for a graphic agency doing architecture (interior and exterior simulations).
But my favourite passion is about visual effects and I hope doing these in future.
But I have a question...
Which 3d software is the best for visual effects (3ds max, maya, xsi, ecc)...I speak not only for my hobby but also for a work in future? Which software is the most used in movies?
I need to know this because I want to start studing one of these...but I am so confused...

you could start with Max and it's brother Combustion. Together they can make some really nice stuff. Then toss in after effects to round it all out.

Well if you're speaking of movies then its Maya and AfterEffects. These are the most used ones but still youcan get same results with other packages too.
