Heres my entry. One of my rare atempts at painting. Its an aeroplane with an engine failure in the middle of a very rough sea (hence the size of the wave blocking the horizon). Took about 1.30 hours to complete.

mine isnt as intense as the rest but it is eerie in its own kind of way...one of my fears and i feel it would be a disaster if you were left at sea alone, and still noone even noticed you were gone....any how here it is took about 25 minutes in photoshop

There seems to be some problem with uploading attachments :( .Has anyone have the same problem??. I'll wait until tomorrow, and then I'll try to post my work, hope the problem will be fixed :(

Hi painters,

this topic is great, fitting quite well in an action-oriented, satirical CG-animation series I´m starting to develop at the moment. The Main character is making her way through a fragile and corrupt country by the Caspian Sea, ruled by oil-tycoons, excommunists and warlords.

So I haven´t been idle and spent yesterdays evening in this concept-painting that is staged on an oil rig.

Done in Photoshop CS2
Time: 9 hours and 40 minutes.
Title Sabotage in Block 7

I´ve got the same problems uploading as Lukanus, so I will post the picture here as soon as the 3D-Total-database will be fixed.

Until that You can use this link:

www.typographen.de/Sea.jpg

See You!

P.S.: Great and eerie entries so far from You guys!

Gordon13: Glad you decided to join in the challenge and I hope you'll stay for plenty more! I like the plane and flames in your pic. The sea is quite flat though and the siloutte line of the sea is too sharp but it all gets the point across. Reminds me of the scene in the Tom Hanks film, Castaway, just directly before they hit the ocean in the plane, strangely enough ;)

Artecnl: A damn nice pic. Particularly the sea and reflection...
I like the idea and colours very much. Nice one.

Kovooraj: Very nice painterly look to this. I think the square brush you used on the ship takes away slightly from it though. A tiny bit of blur there to ease the edge of the squares and I think it's rockin'!

Art Mekanik: Probably my favourite here yet!! It's lacking a bit o detail but great for 25 mins! The idea and feeling of it is horrible (in a good scary way ;)) Well done, mate.

Karsten: Very nice scene. Is the series available for download or purchase yet (or is it still a wip)? Great detail, light and perspective.

Lukanus: Looking good!! I love the idea. The detail & colouring are excellent (especially with Poseidon himself). Tiny thing though...it looks like Poseidon has only three fingers and a wonky thumb on his left hand! His right hand, on the other hand (ugh ;)), is practically photorealistic! Well done.

Elf: To hell with embarrassment - The more the merrier :)......and I'm curious now and wanna see :) (you realise you didn't post it up though, yeh?!) What you'll receive here is proper crits (good or bad) but it should'nt put you off - The idea is to use these to help you develope your skills and then help others yourself where possible.....but MOST importantly ..to enjoy yourself (and to get involved in the odd bitching session - now that's fun ;)) Hope you'll stick around to see for yourself!

Lukanus
13-09-2006, 04:33 AM
Crackerlips - I'm really glad that you like it! Practically there are four fingers, the thumb is hidden :D and the index finger is the "wonky" one :D . I know, I know, each person that I asked for opinion has picked up on the fingers and the left hand (my mother,my friends, my girlfriend and so on...) :D . Anyway, I'm glad that you like it. :) . Regards.

Time for my second entry!...Hurray!!! :) :p

Title: "Siren"
Time: about 7-8 hours (whole night  )

Feel free to comment and criticize...as always ;)

Cheers people!!!

P.S. It's a bit blurry, but it was my goal...:)

Lukanus: Another really good one! I love the water crashing between the ship and rocks ...and the detail on the serpent-woman is very nice too. What a bit*h that Siren is though - luring in the fools to their death just for fun ;)

Here's one from me anyways - Photoshop, Intuos3, approx. five hrs, the ref I used can be found here at the top : http://www.wreckoverysalvage.com/

Gordon13: Welcome, nice first attempt, the more the merrier :)

Artecnl: Love the atmosphere, it inspired my entry which you could probaly notice. I like the bright speckles that you have used for the brightest part of the reflection on the water and trailing the comet, I was wondering whether that is a standard brush or custom made?

Kovooraj: Nice work, definitely has a paintery feel about it, if you used lower opacitys/flows or the smudge tool a tad it could blend together a little more.

Art Mekanik: Nice, quick, sweet, entry.

Karsten: Beautiful scene, the 9hrs look to be worth it. you definately have some talent.

Lukanus: Looks good, i like the soft lighting in your image, the mermaids well done too.

Usmanghiyas: Welcome, your entry looks good, the background looks a tad blurry though.

Annatar: Love the concept, possiden looks pretty pissed :P

Elf, Crackerlips: I can;t see either of your entries, is it just my computer or others aswell??

And here is my attempt, its pretty obvious what it is although i hope it looks like the explosion is at see.... Meant to show nuclear testing at sea. Took bout 2hrs, done in photoshop cs with mouse. Hope you like it.

14-09-2006, 04:39 PM
Usmanghiyas: Very nice scene though I would like to see detail and lighting on the ship. Glad you decided to join :)

Eetwartti: Lots of new names in this one - good stuff! Welcome :D Really good pic. I didn't spot that you said it was a burning lighthouse until after looking at your image.....my first thought was it was like a cross between the scene at the end of 'Mary Shelley's Frankenstein' where the monster son burns himself and already dead Frankenstein on the raft...and some freaky scene you'd expect to see in the game Silent Hill!! The lighthouse idea works nicely though. Great mood.

Warrior11: Nice to have you here! :)

Artecnl: Glad you like it and thanks for the crits mate. I agree about the fire thing - although it was a lot brighter when I painted it (I tend to have my monitor contrast quite high for nice vibrancy) but like now, I'm on a different computer and I see exactly what you mean. Looks less saturated. Not to worry - I'll compensate next time :D

Annatar: Full of action and motion this one....great composition! As usual very nice colour blending and texturing! Poseidon - javellin team captain and champion ship-spearer of the seas....a big hit with the ladies! :D

Undertow: Love the style .....excellent use of brushes and colours!! Very powerful!
Not sure about why you can't see my pic (shows up fine on three of my computers here!) - I had it coming coming from an external site though so I'm gonna change that now it looks like the uploading is ok again and hopefully you'll be able to see it then.

Thanks ye all for the comments - much appreciated

Gordon13: Great idea, the plane's kicksass. The fire might need playing around with opacity in places but tis cool - its me being picky. The sea itself does need to be a little less "vertically" flat, for want of a better word. looks like you erased the Horizon line of the water. Play around with the brushes, blend and blend. Try different colours, greens and blues... maybe a hing of grey. You need to give an illusion that the horizon is way off... break the straightness of the horizon, have interlocking waves. Hope it makes sense...
Oh Well

Artecnl: Depressingly Good. Effortless great work as always. Love the sea. The impending doom... the hammer waiting to fall.

Kovooraj: Great Picture. Maybe darken certain aspects for greater contrast but then again im just being picky. Again.

Art Mekanik: Cool idea, the fear of abandonment... Arrghhhh. Oh well I cant swim anyways so itll be a short wait.

Lukanus: Great picture. Love how you did her hair. You just know the sailors are fecked!!

Usmanghiyas: Nice idea to use a silhouette. The sea looks like its boiling.

Undertow: Now thats an evil image. Brilliant, you captured the violence and the heat of an A-bomb blast nicely.

Hope I didnt miss anyone... sorry if so

Hi all.
This is my version of Sea Tragedy.
There is a little kind of mouse in Greenland very pretty and soft that have fun to.. die with all family and parents together. :xx: :xx:

they are lemmings.

That is a natural mistery but no one till now know the real reason.
I was thinking about that for my tragedy.

I did in 1 hour and 20 minutes in Photoshop CS with TRUST little tablet :)
Hope you like it

Eetwartti - good idea, very nice use of colours.

Thanks usman and Lukanus for your comment.
I had paint the little limmings like that for make the scene less dramatical than the real things. I was little sad when i saw a documentary at television about that little creature fall down from a high place in the ocean or start swim till the end.. without energy for survive.
So i try to give them a kind of funny appaerance for cover a little the cruel reality. :)

(sorry for my english i hope i had explain a little my intention ad concept)

Ok I reworked my first entry so this is the final version. Im much happier with it now. Added waves, shadows and the water looks better I think. Added more colours to the water (Im no good with colours so you might think theyre a bit wrong :( ) to give more variety.
Iv also read an article about painting that said about adding small detail (also making areas more blurry than others to keep the atention focused on the important areas) around the important parts of the scene, like the water and the plane, and it would keep the viewer's interest on the specific areas to keep the viewer's eyes from drifting off the page. I have tried to make this painting effective using the techniques from the article. Hope you like it :)

Palantir: Very interesting take on the theme. I like the sea the most but it's all pretty awesome! Poor little idiots ;)

Gordon13: The techniques you read up on have definitely helped..keep it up! A vast improvement on the sea - nice one. I think the colours are spot-on

I'm still unable to upload through Threedy so I've tried Imageshack....
Let me know if you can all see it now and crit please. Cheers.

Palantir: Cute little Lemmings. Original idea, nicely done

Gordon13: Wow man! you did a great job on the sea. Colours etc are spot on.

Crackerlips: Run out the 9's!!! Put some solid shot in their guts. Wowa, flash back! Mentally good sea. The waves are class. Nice idea to do the view point from the enemy wessel (as Checkov would say).

Ania: A lovely refreshing picture. wellll maybe not for the bird.

@Lukanus - Yeah I was about half ways through when I saw your pic with the Siren. I thought, "ahhh someone else who likes myths etc". As for rocks... wellll sea, rocks and ships go hand in hand with disasters. A no brainer... just as well for me.
I was going to do a scene from The Odyssey -Scylla and Carybdis. Have the main man Odysseus urging his men on between the Whirlpool and the rocks as Scylla lifts a few men from the deck. I might try it later... I just couldnt get a groovy angle on it.

Artecnl - another good one from you! The water looks very fresh, the platforms are looking god too, but... I don't know,I have feeling that there's something missing in this image. It's great but it's somehow incomplete. Maybe it's too calm/quiet and not so dramatic like your first one. A future mass airtransport vehicle ditches in the ocean and the first wave of recue helicopters arive at the scene. Due to the heavy engines in the back it's started to sink.

Hello, this is my first picture in this tipe of challenges. It take me about 2 hours, maybe more. I started to paint it and I loosed the sense of time :) Try to painting sea is very difficult! Made in Photoshop 7.0 with a Wacom

I can´t see the rules because the url seems broken. I don´t know if my picture is correct.

Edit:

Tittle: Disaster on Nasa Module
Time: One session of 2-3 hours
Software: Photoshop 7
With Wacom.

P.D.: Sorry by my english... :(

boba_bu - it's a nice one! I like the perspective and the detail on the landing module. The water looks good too.Nice one.

Freek - nice concept, but it looks a bit cartoony (the colors are too bright and too lit in especial the see).

I have learned rules jet (rule nº6). I want to say that I used a Photograph (made by me) like background-texture for the module-lander. I have erased the image and re-do it with a similar texture made by brushes.

The final image:

Title: Disaster on Nasa Module
Time: One session of 2-3 hours
Software: Photoshop 7
With Wacom.

Hello everyone. I originally came to this site to look for 3d modeling stuff, but I kept finding myself coming to this page to look at all the beautiful paintings being posted. It's been almost 10 years now (fresh year of HS) since i've done any kind of art related stuff, and you guys have inspired me to begin drawing and painting again. This is my first attempt at digital painting (actually, this is my first serious attempt at painting period), done in PS CS2, took me about 3-4 hours on multiple sessions. Enjoy, and I look forward to continually participating in these challenges.

Very nice new entry! ^_^

Wargrafix i like your painting tecnique. Welldone :) And i like also the camera view. Bravo

balaji_san also your work is very nice. Remind me some kind of oil painting very quite but full of energy. Congratulation

headzeppelin also that work is very nice. I like the storm go away at the end of the disaster. :)

Now i post my new one.
I try to imagine a big disaster in the sea..and at last i had see something in my mind. What can be more bad than the Sea dead?
If the sea disappear... what kind of disaster will be?
(is better if i think other now or i can't sleep -.-'')

Here my work.
Done in photoshop CS with Trust tablet in 40 minutes.

Palantir: Glad you like my pic :) Cheers. Your pic in post#67 is awesome....and only 40 minutes!! The idea is very original and the perspective, the colours, the light (and lens flare), the exposed sea-floor......all really excellent.

Lukanus: You made my day :D Thanks mate!
- post#49: This one is very dramatic and powerful indeed! Great perspective and scale! The blurring of the foreground takes away from it the tiniest bit but damn good regardless! Nice one!

Ania: Thanks for the comment :) Regarding your pic: Great take on the theme and very funny! The expression on the birds face is priceless. Very simple but very effective. Nice one.

Undertow: So glad you like the pic - I appreciate the comment mate, thanks!

Annatar: I could take a wild guess but excuse the ignorance....what the hell are 'the 9's?? :) Anyway thanks so much for the wery wery nice comment, gipdin ;)

Artecnl: Awesome picture mate - there is a lot I love about it (the colour, the perspective, the foreground detail/texture, the the sparkling sea, the shiny light in general, the motion of the planes, the explosion...all REALLY cool) but there is something missing and I can't decide what exactly!? Maybe a few simple things like shadows from the planes would help!? I think generally to give it a bit more of a dramatic feel, the day would have to be not quite so nice (ie...noticeable waves, stormy sky) but then again, the glistening sun on everything are things I really like in it!! I just don't know :) Great job anyhoo!

Waheed: Shame you're so busy ....I'd love to see one from you also! Hopefully next time

Suirebit: Thanks for your comment :) I didn't forget you buddy ;) You've done an awesome job yourself on the water - Looks very deep & thick and fits perfectly into your eerie scene imo! I really like the clouds and the tentacles....and the boat :) I especially love the colour, texture and light of the tentacles. Me being super-fussy as usual but the only thing I can fault you on is the reflection of the sun...it's too much to the left. Excellent though!

Freek: Glad you decided to join in :) Nice concept. The helicopters look really well as does the airtransport vehicle (great design) though it lacks somewhat in shadow. Also I think the foreground could do with more detail than the background (the background and foreground have the same level of colour detail which draws the eye away from the focal point....)

boba_bu: Very nice job. Great idea, perspective, colour, texture.....and the water looks really great too :) And I can barely tell the difference between the first one (with the photo for texture) and the second you did by hand - except the word 'NASA' in white looks better :)

Wargrafix: You made it - good stuff :) Another nice perspectice shot from you. Your choice of colours is always most unusual but work really well. I like the lighting on the small boat and characters (though I'm not sure what the light source, at the bottom of the ship, is!?) If it's from an explosion or fire, I think some smoke and fire damage and markings on the ship would help. The water and clouds look very cool too.

balaji_san: Very effective image. I love your painting/texturing style and colour palette. (I saw many more of your works on Laborganika ...though never got a chance to post on the threads..sorry.) Your work is most impressive anyway. Keep it up.

headzeppelin: DAMN...10 years is a long time to deprive yourself of art-related fun! Hopefully your inspiration will remain now you're here and joining in! Very good pic anyway...I like the 'after the storm' idea and you've portrayed it nicely. Well done.

drained spirit: I think they should probably look for something less dangerous to eat than fish from the Red Lagoon! Some dynamite perhaps :P ;) Very nice though. I can see your painting skills quickly improve. I really like the accompanying stories that go with your work too. One suggestion though is you should try resizing your images before posting (and maybe have a link to a larger size) .....having to scroll down and right takes away from the viewing experience.

Whew!! That took quite a while ;) Keep it up everyone anyway - great pics all round!

Thank you crackerlips. Got results today for exams. I did ok, just not in one. I was a bit distracted and realized just now the darkened colour didn't show up, layers can be a pain at times. Wanted to put smoke but the midnight deadline last nite was too fast approching. Wait, is the deadline today?, or midnight last nite? Regardless, thanks for your critique. Run out the 9's, to deploy the 9 inch cannons.

not tooo sure what could be meant by that but it sounds waaayyyyy suspect

Great job everyone! I guess it's time to vote, and since no one has done it yet, i thought I'd start us off.

1st - Crackerlips #38 (the sea looks awesome, heh, puts mine to shame, how did you paint such realistic waves?)

2nd - Artecnl #48 (wow, great job for only 2 hours of work. Looks like concept art for a video game or something. Good job on your colors too, the sea definately has that Gulf Coast look to it)

3rd - Lukanas #19 (I love the mood of your painting, very forboding. I like the almost ethereal quality of your lighting)

Honorable mention - Karsten #29(great job, it looks fantastic, but i don't think it quite counts as "speed" painitng :), otherwise you get first hands down.

Thanks again for your comments, i know, 10 years has been a long time. You should see some of my engineering notebooks from college, they are filled with doodles. It's good to finally be getting back into some artistic stuff. Have a good one everyone.

Honorable mention - Crackerlips #38 (waves are super-realistic, maybe the best water effect in this challenge)

Great job everybody!

Suirebit - Your water painting technique has improved significantly since your first post, keep up the good work. I think after this post, I want to make a study of water and clouds, two very difficult things to paint in my opinion.

My votes;

1: crackerlips. Love the detailed sails and the stormy ocean. But also the overall mood of the piece, verry gloomy, it fitts the theme verry well.

2: Karsten. The use of color is really nice, big areas and strong contrasts. The water also looks really cool, verry realistic waves and dripping.

3: artecnl (1st entry), again, really like the mood it sets. Dark and dramatic. Verry simpel but verry powerfull.

Hounorable mention: ania, verry funny! I like the expression on the bird. Undertow, cool explosion, I like the fire effect. And the use a "messy" (in a good way) style makes it look verry destructive.

waheed, (sorry if this is the actual system) - may I suggest a point based system for the final results? How does that work :

Each 1st place vote counts as 4 points for that artist, 2nd place vote 3 points, 3rd 2 points and honorable mention 1 point. You sum up all the points gathered by everyone and order them downward, from the max points obtained to the min. and you get the first 3 in a 100% error-free way :)
