_Fight Move_
The idea,
The last little challenge earned its name. It was tough, but sound good stuff was the result. Now, on to the future. It has come to my attention that many of us play video games and in this revelation, the idea of a fight move was brought to my mind. This fight move can be either a basic move that you would see in a game like Mortal Kombat, Dungeons and Dragons, etc. It can even be a finishing move. A move so violent that the opponent receiving this brutal beating has no choice but to give away the life he tried so hard to keep. Or it can be both. Blood or no blood, nasty or cute, it’s all up to you. If you want, add music. Don’t make this harder than it sounds. If you have a question about anything, ask it. I don’t want people animating for a week and a half to find out what they are doing is wrong.
_Rules_
- The due date is September 30th, (three weeks from now) a Saturday 11pm(GMT). Voting will be on that Sunday. Post your final entry’s in the Final Entry Thread.
- Minimum animation: your animation needs to be at least 3 seconds.
- Recommended screen resolution in 320x240 (you can do 640x480 if you want, but why would you).
- You can post W.I.P.s but you are only allowed one complete entry. That link is also final. You can and should post your wip’s to get help.
- Websites where you post your finals is up to you.
- Remember, it's about animation, use your time for animation, not to get the best render possible, unless you can afford it.
- Use of plug-ins not allowed. Must be key framed (hand animated)
- Try to use Quicktime or Divx if possible.
- You must post a render of some sort with your final entry post; also include a screen grab with key frames. No CHEATING.
- Voting will be as follows -
First place (3) points
Second place (2) points
Third place (1) points
Good luck!

Hey BiGToE - can you please explain the new voting points - I don't get it :wall:
Also, any idea how we could shanghai more animators (I could pass out those leather sack things filled with sand [what are they called again]), and we could smack some of the members on the back of the head and make them animate. This is a good topic and should generate more interest - lets hit the frontpage guy to get a plug for this little challenge - I know they don't want to, but maybe a light, but pursuasive smack on the back of the head.......
Oh and what is our rating G,PG, PG-13, R (I am thinking back in the day when SubZero was in the news)
D,
BiG ToE-3DT
11-09-2006, 06:49 PM
The voting is this : you pick first place, give them a number, 0-10, lets say you give me first place with a score of 9. Ok, second place, whoever that is must have a score less than 9, and so on for third place.
Front page, I'll send that dude a link with a heads up.
For everyone else, lets hit the forum hard with links. But you need to do it with style. Go into the animation threads and say wow nice, come here and do that. Something like that.

2nd = 2pts
3rd = 1pt

Oh heckyeah! I'm totally down for this one!
Hmm...*plans out various moves*
Can the "finishing move" as a whole consist of a few shorter/combo moves? i.e. does it have to be a single punch, or could it be like a kick/knee to the groin, punch to the face, and then kiss on the forehead to make the guy fall over from defeat?

Hi there, i would like to ask if i need to create a character with the quality like above so that i can enter the challenge? or can i join with a simple rigged character with it's animation only?
BiG ToE-3DT
12-09-2006, 06:35 PM
you only need one character to do a fight move
and that character can be whatever you want it to be.
BiG ToE-3DT
12-09-2006, 06:36 PM
simple rigged character with it's animation only?
what do you mean by animation only.
martimus
12-09-2006, 06:52 PM
i think he means do you have to have a finished model, textured etc.
if that is the question then the answer is no you dont, its not about the modelling or texturing skills, its about the animation,
A character made out of just boxes would do for this challenge
bryanttan85

speaking of rigs ready for animation - does anyone know where i can get a good rig that i can animate in maya
(i have a good one already generi rig 1.5 but different ones would be good)
DerekSc
13-09-2006, 08:11 AM
If you just want a character to animate, try the link below. Package Man and IK Joe v.3 are good (you can switch him from FK to IK if that suits you better). If you want a generic rig to assign to a character, can't help you there, but the tutorials will help if you want to create one yourself (which, if you want to be an animator, you should get in the practice of doing).

Souns fun. Would be a good start to animating. Iv done a 1 second animation of a scribble person doing a high kick (literally flat, scribled as if hes made of paper and just drawn on :) ). If I can make it last over 3 seconds, would it be suitable for this comp or is this supposed to be more serious?

SeamZ2B: the end move of the clip, is he doing the "cut your neck" meaning your a dead man move. If so, you might want to bring the hand down, to his neck. Right now his hand is in his face and it looks like he is biting his thumb then dragging his blood across his face.

So if I have time, and my back let me alone ... I'll make an 2D and an 3D anim, and U guys chose wich will be the final entry...(ohh so much to do, I have the angel in low poly to :shy: , )
So here is my concept WIP: 2min one mouse and the photosop ... :shy:

D - I think I remember having the same problem when I first downloaded it. I think there's a spare keyframe somewhere on this wrist/hand and/or waist around frame 20 or so...it's odd, but once you find where it is it's not too difficult to clean up. I think I have a perfectly clean version of the file if you'd like it, though :)

Arg, missing a good one this time! Life always ends up stealing all of my time to work on 3D stuff when all the good stuff comes along. Nonetheless, maybe I will work on brewing something up even if I won't be able to get it all done by deadline.
Tell me, the challenge is more about the motion than the models, right? So would I be allowed to render just a bone system performing a fight move rather than a rigged character? (Because I've been working on a character to rig, but the process is going just about as well as a viral infection at the moment). However, the rig may be usable.
DerekSc
20-09-2006, 06:17 PM
Yep, stick figures and generic rigs are fine. It's all about the animation and not about the models. If you want to do a nice render with nice models and all that, it's always appreciated and can make something people will keep on their desktops and watch over and over again (I'm looking at you Freespace). In the last competition my model and render were complete garbage, but people voted for it anyways (2nd place - thanks again everyone!).
If you're short on time, take a look at some of the links people have posted for free rigs and take one of those instead of struggling to build a rig in time.

SeamZ2B: overall motions look good. But when the grenade goes off, the power behind it should toss the little guy farther way. If the blast kills him, then there should be as much movement in his "lifeless" body when he is stabbed.

SeamZ2B, the only real comment I have so far is it seems a bit slow paced. Of course, you want to allow us enough time to view each individual animation, but perhaps try speeding things up just a little so that it's one move after another, and will look more like an action-fight scene. Nothing major though, so no big deal if you don't feel like messing with the timing :haha:

Jimbo: The animation looks good, the only problem I have is the weight in the kick itself, he seems to be just touching him with it. It would have more weight if you showed it hit, slow (as it pushes against the other guy), and follow through (full extension) before starting to pull back. Even without the follow through, it should stop on impact for a few frames before starting to come back.
Nice use of the hips to put power into it, well done, now we just need to see that power on impact.
If you've got a few minutes, think about looking at that. IMHO, that would make it look fantastic. Good work overall!
DerekSc
27-09-2006, 07:57 AM
rvg: Looks nice, but with the camera movement, it's hard to see what he's doing. Perhaps think about putting him in a simple environment (so we have some sort of visual reference), or not moving the camera around so we know all the movement is coming from the character itself. I like the attacks, nice entry for your first time here.

thanks for the advice DerekSc... yeah you are completely right, there should be at least 2 or 3 frames with impact.. im too busy to make the changes before tomorrow, but i'll prolly fix it later...
your progress is going really well, the only thing i saw was at the end when he kicks.. his head jerks to the left side very fast. when you kick, the head rotates on the y, like the chin comes to the chest and then back up... doesn't seem like it should move that fast and abrupt to any side..
but lookin good, it is very smooth, can't wait to see what you and the others come up with tomorrow..

ok, so here is my problem, I went for the nice render, instead of the nice animation. About 240 frames, but the longest render time for one of those frames is 44 minutes, I may be pushing the deadline.
Think I might even add some FX to draw your eye away from the motion.

Are you officially asking for an extension? Cause if you are, I'm officially saying I'm fine with that if everyone else is. I mean, it's for my benefit anyways since I'm going to be watching your movie (and I'd rather see a nicely rendered one than a Playblast... or whatever you Max people call it).
Speaking of Max people... where are you guys? The final entries are mostly (all?) Maya!

no, I don't need any more time. I'll just sit here and render all night long if I have to. I got to represent the Max users.
But let this be a lesson to everyone, just because you have 3 weeks, doesn't mean wait till Wednesday to start, when it takes 3 days to render.
