I think these game soundtracks are gorgeous:
Warcraft 3 ( the cinematic suite is mind blowing ) and WoW
Halo 1 and Halo 2
Haegemonia, Homeworld 2
Half Life 2
Morrowind and Oblivion ( the atmospheric tracks )
Some awesome movie soundtracks:
Lord of the Rings Trilogy ( simply best )
King Arthur ( Hans Zimmer knows his instruments )
Animatrix ( for that cyberpunk techno feel of most tracks in it )
Aerosmith - I don't want to miss a thing ( from Armageddon )
Matrix ( the first one, there are some brilliant tracks, like Monster Magnet )
Add to the list, with reasons. :D

All I have to say is GTA 3, Grand Theft Auto 3 was the game that changed it all, and the best part was not the fact that you could run around doing whatever you wanted with whatever you wanted to whoever you wanted, but the fact that after you jack somebody for their ride, you could sit back relax and listen to your choice of music. Game sdon't do that, you listen to what they want you to listen to. GTA 3, you run over a few people, to the beat of The Game Radio. That's what I'm talking about.
Infact, now I got an hunger for some 5 star police chases right, now...

I really liked the soundtracks to the TombRaider series.
It`s really distinctive, you know it`s Tombraider when you hear it:)
Yeah, Tombraider 2's sound track had to be the best.
Half life 2's music...well...I don't remember much. One stands out. That techno type piece that happened about 4 times throughout the game, for instance after the train bit at the start where you had to jump over some at the station, and those burning barrels came down stairs.
Sonic the Hedgehog had a great sound track in my eyes on the Megadrive, and all the sonics did really. I have those in MOD files backed up, and playable by Winamp in their original form.
I also really liked the sound track to Day After Tommorow.

Serenity and Firefly both have excellent soundtracks.
Also the soundtrack for the new Battlestar Galactica is great.

I like the soundtrasks in most Super Mario Games and The Sims 2 Games, they are just so nice :)
All of you should visit this site (http://www.vgmusic.com), midi recreations of almost every Games Soundtrack ever made :D
Yeah arneoog, thats a great site. Been on their tonnes of times, though if you want the original sounding ones (sounds exactly the same), theres nothing better than getting hold of MODS.
Gym for Megadrive, and SPC for Snes for example, and you can get plugins freely for Winamp to play them.

Movies:
The classic John Williams 5 (Jaws, Star Wars, E.T, Superman, Indiana Jones). Those 5 pieces of film score are arguably the most well known scores ever written, and they were all done by 1 guy over a span over about 7 years.
Other classics include: Apocalypse Now, Gladiator, The Godfather, Jurassic Park and Blade Runner. Recently, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Kingdom of Heaven and Metropolis (2000 anime version) have really impressed as well.
As far as games go, there are really only 2 possible choices, and that's anything by Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy) and Koji Kondo (Mario/Zelda). These 2 have done more memorable game scores than any composer in history. Other notable game scores include: Mega Man 2/3, Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, Star Fox (SNES) and recently Beyond Good and Evil.

@Puckducker Right on! (allthough I've never played chrono trigger so I cant judge that)
Starfox had okay music. For instance the Corneia stage, but it can't beat the Sonic soundtrack's... :p

Ah, yes, how could I forget about Sonic!? Actually, sonic 2 was really the musical showcase for that series. Can't get the Metropolis Theme out of my head.
Honestly there are really too many classic game's with amazing scores to mention.
But the thing I liked most about Star Fox was, for a SNES game, it actually almost sounded like a huge orchestral score. Epic in every way shape and form, and I still think it's leaps and bounds over most game scores today. My favorite track was from the Armada level. It's like the music was plucked right from a John Williams score.

Really love the Call of Duty soundtracks, very very cool music.
Also like the Tony Hawk music, some great artists featured in these games.

Not sure if anyone here already knows about it, but if you like game music check out Overclocked Remix (http://www.ocremix.org/). The sites all about remixing videogame music, and they've really got some amazing stuff. They just reached over 1500 remixes, and I've got all of them on the iPod. Great stuff if you're into game music!

I agree with you 110%, you really know your music. Especially about John Williams (just bought his gretest hits) and Koji Kondo. I'm a big fan of both of their work.
Puckducker, I love that place. I've been more selective, but must have around 400 from there.

Grand Theft Auto - Vice City! Now this was a game and a half! this was so amazing it managed to capture everything for the 80's, the decade that gave us bad fashions, big hair and fantastic music, ranging from pop, synth, new wave, new romantics, rock and even punk, this game was amazingly accurate, you were able to drive any car you wished, and the added bonus of motorbikes and speedboats and helicopters too! i had many a happy night cruising the beaches of vice city with a faster car and flash fm or emotion playing out, while i was gunning down passer by's and going for an insane jump trick!
a really really cool game with a brilliant soundtrack. and what's even better is Vice City Stories are coming to the PSP! i hope it gets released for thhe PS2 aswell! i'll be in 80's heaven once again :)
Kind Regards

P.S - i Also loved Killer Instinct of the Snes, all the guitar music was performed By Big Hair Enthusiast & Guitar Legend Brian May of Queen! and the game cartridge was black and came with a CD of the music! :)

My top 3 game soundtracks:
1. American Mcgee's Alice. Music was made by Chris Vrenna, and is suprememly atmospheric.
2. The Curse of Monkey Island. The whole game sounds as ace as it looks.
3. Silent Hill (2,3,4 -- I'd pass on 1 though) Akira Yamaoka is a soundscape genius.

For movies id say:
John Williams
Hans Zimmer (all of their stuff, just like Puckducker said)
Most of the classic Tarantino movies, like Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers and such, and even Kill Bill has some awesome tracks...
As for games, agree to whats already said, but not to forget the legendary Giana Sisters tune...lol

One of the best movie Soundtracks belongs to "conan the barbarian".
Many old western movies had great themes (many done by enrico morricone)
As for games I recommend Final Fantasy too(especially part VI+VII, VIII is average)
The Soundtrack of FFXI sucks though. Talking of FF, "Advent children" is also magnificent.

Poets of the Fall from Max Payne 2, the music is at the final credits.
From films, there are just too many, all the John Williams soundtracks , Tarantino's also has good music, a lot of action movies are terrible but the music is good, Rammstein was in triple X and The Matrix, Metallica in Mission Impossibe. Oh I love the "In the name of the father" sondtrack, with U2.
TV's the Sopranos theme song (wope up this morning, with R.L. Burnside )

I'm now playing this jewel of a game: Fahrenheit Indigo Prophecy, and it has some of the most brilliant musical score I have heard in a damn long while.
The atmosphere is very similar to Max Payne, but even better. And the storyline is out of this world, too bad for some few and very rare action sequences that drive me nuts.

Well 7 GB is the new 700 MB. Get used to it, games aren't getting smaller.
A very relaxing soundtrack was Hegemonia's. It's a large scale space opera and while the game is not superb ( it has its flaws, though it was a good experience ), the music is absolutely a must have.

Love the music from Jim Jarmusch's "Dead man". Composed by Neil Young. Very moody and unique. Just as the movie itself.
"Corpse Bride" has very clever musical pieces. Actualy I preffer them to "Nightmare before christmas".
And you can't really forget Vangelis... "Bladerunner", "Alexander", "chariots of fire". That piece form "1492: Conquest of paradise" sends chills down my back whenever I hear it.
Can't say I give that much importance to music in games, but music from "beyond good & evil" is pure genious, "X3" had some cool athmospheric pieces, and don't forget the "command & conquer" games, especially "red alert" - enjoyable stuff.

No one's mentioned Amelie? Well I'd like to be the first to! If you haven't seen the film, go see it now, it's really a great film!
And what about The Lion King? I mean, who doesn't like the combination of Elton John and Tim Rice, come on? Ok maybe a few of you don't. Or a lot of you don't. But it's a good combination mark my words!
And I love the soundtrack to Kung-Fu Hustle, especially that they went with a traditional chinese orchestra.
And I concur with all John Williams votes :D

I'm playing Neverwinter Nights 2, and I must say the soundtrack is phenomenal. Really gives you that epic fantasy feeling. Anyone know if I can get this soundtrack from somewhere, or who composes it? ( free, perhaps? though I doubt it )

I love the HL2 soundtrack. It fits perfectly with the environment and mood of each level. Some of them are really good to hear outside of the game. The Halo soundtrack is also really nice. Oh and also Guildwars has some really atmospheric music.

On the old Commodore 64, there are many many music scores that are awesome. Three of those: Flimbo´s Quest theme song, Last Ninja 2 Central park loading screen song, and the Movie Monsters theme song stands out (hopefully some of ya´ll will know what i´m talking about).
But the best music score ever in a game is in Warhammer 40.000: Rites of war (even though the game itself was.... yeah..)

Film music is basically ruled by 4-5 composers: Hans Zimmer, John Williams, Howard Shore, James Horner and Ennio Morricone. Some others are good as well but these are the best and most known.
I don't know much about game music, but I heard this song in the Final Fantasy XIII teaser trailer and it was very nice, and there was a motor sound at the end of it that I liked very much, all though it was kind of out of concept.
Ghosty!

I have to agree with Hans Zimmer... The rock theme song is the bomb! actually I'm listening to it right now on my ipod. :)

Oh and FF: Advent Children's soundtrack is top notch too.

I love techno so I'd have to say the Metroid Prime series has the best music for my taste. Zelda has some nice tunes but they get old after a wile. Nintendo has some awesome soundtracks. OH YA! Age of empires 3 has an amazing soundtrack. Other than that you guys have pretty much covered everything.
