hello there.... here comes the 53rd speed painting challenge. starts today and ends on Saturday, the 7th of October, 2006.
:*poly: Topic: Snowy Landscape/Snowy Mountain Range.
painting snow is always a challenge for most people. its color, form, with a strong sense of cold, etc, is quite tricky to portray well. im sure we are going to have some good artwork this time as well...:).
its upto u to include whatever u like, trees, hut, fields, etc. u can add whatever comes to your mind when u think of a land/mountains covered in snow. just be smart with your ideas...:). take good care of perspective, colors, focus and depth, after all its all about learning stuff and having fun at the same time.
every person is allowed to submit 3 entries, kindly mention the votable one.
voting starts on the 7th of October.
all the best to everyone....

Hi everyone!
Another "great" topic, where 70-90 % of the canvas is occupated by water...:D
Now I know that I hate too paint sea and snow. :)
Alright, enough complaints. I'm starting with this concept. It took me about 2 -2,5 h in PS + Wacom tablet. "Enjoy" and criticize :) .
Cheers!

Lukanus: Its an ok painting but the angle seems a bit generic.
artecnl: Excellent piece. Terrific composition, and colourscheme. Great effect with the shininess of the snow, how did you do that?
Surebit : Awesome; rich clours, composition and lighting. Great set for the start of the competition.

For my work i usually start from visualize an idea in mind (i think for all is the same :P) and then.. i start to do the main shape. starting from a background color i add the main shape first and then i put details with color, shadows and light. Sometimes the shape change because i find something more intresting and i follow the.... heart :P (in this case the iced wind :))
warrior11 very well done :) i like the point of view of your concept. go on with that feeling of panoramic area and if the main subject close to the camera is on focus and the environment far and blurred can be very nice. i imagine it. Go on with wind dear :P this boy must undestead what mean go against the power of the mountain
Great work posted here like usual.

hi there gordon13...i agree with Palantir. i would suggest, that u go for general shapes of the mountains first (sketchy way), then add snow, again with less details and after u get satisfied with the outcome and composition and the look, u can go for putting details for mountains and snow and for whatever u have there. going step by step, starting with rough/general shapes, anaylising all the way for better composition and for putting enough detail afterwards is always better. atleast thats how i go on...:). an important suggestion would be to think about a good composition first. cause no matter how good u are with colors and treatment, if the initial drawing/painting is not well composed, it wont ever work. remember we handle things according to the requirement, in a speed painting thingi, u dont have to worry about putting realistic details. thats not required.
i think u just give it a go, suit yoursef and just carry on, ull soon make your own workflow and style, if u keep at it, in less time ull get the hang of things...all the best...be bold.
happy painting and all the best gordon13....:).
good to see these wonderful entries...good work friends...:).
Suirebit...looks nice, i like the composition.
efish...thats a good one, how about putting some colors in there?
Palantir...well done, with a nice feel to it. good job.
warrior11...thats nice...it would be great to see some more texture for the snow though.

Okay...time 4 comments...
#9 - Lukanus - A nice one...first time i looked upon i thought something like "whoooo...wish i could take a breath of that icy, crystal-clear air up there..."
#30 - i like the 1st one better...but that sky looks familiar :)
#11 - artecnl - This one blew me. Impressive use of colours (...havin´ an eye on that...watch out :). i´ll take u 4 reference issues ;) ), yet simple. Great one.
#12 - suirebit - left aside the mountains, i like this one, expecially the trees / misty forest...is this a kind of "tree brush" u´ve been using there ? how long did it take u ?
#17 - efish - :D. Keep on playing around :). I first gave uo, too...but accidently -while fooling around with brushes- there was a snow-covered mountain :D.
#19 - palantir - this one is cool :). but taking cover from the wind in there
wouldnt be the best idea, hm ? reminds me of hoth (?).
#27 - arneoog - i don´t know why...the water is cool. it´s the colouring...
#35 - *lol* :). yah...i know...it´s hard to resist :o).sometimes impossible...
#28 - drained spirit - man :). you´re so busy ^^. a little bit "washy"...problem i´m trying 2 get rid of by not using the blur tool. at least at earlier stages of the image... .
#36 - warrior11 - my first try was quite the same :)...but i blew it...you didn´t.
*edit*
jeez...i´m using 2 much smilies, i think...

Hi everyone :)
This is the first time I've participated in one of these challenges. The topic caught my attention and I really wanted to give it a go. Painting time was somewhere near 5 hrs. I could probably have made it a bit faster, but hey.. once you get started :)
No photo reference - painted from memory. I spent some time developing the right technique for the cliffs and the mountains so they were finished quite fast. What really took a lot of time was painting those darned trees and the snow covering them!.... grr!
I hope you like it!

Wow, this an incredible forum. So much feedback :) Thank you everyone.
This is going to be a tough challenge.
Palantir - I think your deer looks quite like the ones I remember :)
Surebit - Awesome mood!
Lostartist - Perhaps you should try adding a few more colours/highlights and work on getting a foreground and a background to really sell the painting?
Artecnl - Fantastic mood. The colours are very well chosen.
Daniel - Beautiful...
Wargrafix - Very well done. Nice colours.

Hi Milan,
in my opinion there is not a way to goon with some work. You need just find your way. I see your speed paint above and i feel your strokes, your brushes and is nice if you focus on that way.
Every person have his personal way and style to go on with an illustration.
Now, you have start that with fast and clear strokes for get your main shape..so... it's ok. :) Just go on a little with your style. Dance your brush on that image and follow your feelings. I'm sure you will get it :)
I like your starting. Go on.
