View Full Version : Max Slow undo Problem

Ok, this seems to be document related rather than an overall programme problem. My max takes forever to undo on some documents. I even deleted complex geometry and resetxforms on everything, and any undo operation takes more than one second. That's fine if your're on hi poly operations, but moving a vertex in a lowpoly character?

I've tried compressing on save. But nothing. Any ideas what could be causing this?

Interestingly, this seems to be caused by Nromal mapping. Even without having the normal map applied to the model, and even without the map editor open, max slows down. So dumb.

Does anyone have anysuggestions as to what could prevent this problem, other than flushing all the maps away and dropping down to standard mats while I work?

i'm having the same problem, and yes it does seem to be related to normal mapping. i'm getting constant crashes and "out of memory" errors while using nvidia's normal mapping plugin. unfortunately i've not discovered a solution, but would love to get any advice from anyone who has a little more experience working with normal maps!

are you guys using the view normal map in the view port option, that could really slow you down.

Other than that, all I can think of is, apply the normal when your done. Or, have two files, one for testing your normals, one for everything else. When you model is where you want it, and the normals turn out the way you like, then open the finished model file where everything runs smoothly, pose your character, and then apply the normal. Make sure your lights and everything are setup before the normals are applied. They can cause some slowing down too.

no, i'm not displaying normals in the viewport, but yes that does seem to cause an additional slowdown. everything is working at regular speed until i hit 'undo' and then it freezes for several seconds, and then often generates the 'out of memory' error.
i think applying normals last seems like a good workaround, but unfortunately i'm a little too inexperienced with normal mapping to have an intuitive feel for what will and wont work. right now i need to be able to preview results.

is there another max normal mapping plugin besides nvidia's?

thanks for your' help

Well, I guess my next question for you is, what is your nomal mapping process. Walk me threw, how you do it.

Quick Reply
Slow undos have occured for me either because I used a lot of modifiers in a stack or because I had been using 3dsMax for 48-hours without a reboot and things had gone stale. i.e. it was garbage collection time.

Does it happen after a fresh reboot?
