_Jump The Gap_

http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g129/DJBiGToE/40492-rock-jumping-0.jpg

The idea,
Lets take a step back for this challenge. A great idea was posted and after much thought, it has been decided. This challenge will be like no other challenge before it. Why, because this time, your character has to jump over something. So this is what I want to see, your character in a place, he needs to go somewhere, but something is in his/her way. This obstacle can be a hole in the ground, or a dead tree that has fallen over in his path. Keep in mind you don’t need to follow the example; it’s just to get you started. If you want, add music. Don’t make this harder than it sounds. If you have a question about anything, ask it. I don’t want people animating for a week and a half to find out what they are doing is wrong.

_Rules_

- The due date is October 22nd, (3 weeks from now) a Sunday, 12 midnight(GMT). Voting will be that following week. Post your final entry’s in the Final Entry Thread.

- Minimum animation: your animation needs to be at least 3 seconds.

- Recommended screen resolution in 320x240 (you can do 640x480 if you want, but why would you).

- You can post W.I.P.s but you are only allowed one complete entry. That link is also final. You can and should post your wip’s to get help.

- Websites where you post your finals is up to you.

- Remember, it's about animation, use your time for animation, not to get the best render possible, unless you can afford it.

- Use of plug-ins not allowed. Must be key framed (hand animated)

- Try to use Quicktime or Divx if possible.

- You must post a render of some sort with your final entry post; also include a screen grab with key frames. No CHEATING.

- Voting will be as follows -

First place (3) points
Second place (2) points
Third place (1) points

Good luck!

Nice, and again in may head I have a funny one, in my hart I'll join this, in my action maybe an other failure :( ... time will tell ...

Ooh...looking forward to this one. I think I'll try using a different character other than the ninja, so I can get used to different characters/rigs. I wish I had über-fast modeling skills, so I could practice my modeling, as well as rigging...alas, I'm kinda lacking in the character modeling department :haha: Regardless, this comp looks like it'll be fun :D

References are the key, so check this one out. It's fun to watch even if you're not animating anything, just some really good athleticism.

Thanks for the reference, DerekSc! :haha: I've seen that clip before...it's crazy...

It did give me a few ideas about what I want to animate though! ;P

I'll add to the list:

The Parkour team is insane @w@;; Anyway, hope that helps.

ItsaMystery, nice clips, wish I could do that. Thanks!
BiG ToE: leg muscles beyond repute.

(actually, I think Martimus can probably do some of that stuff too, seriously!)

Love the topic :D
I'll try to come with an entry!
Depends on the amount of home work I get this week :p

Good Luck everyone!

inform your school, that this is your homework. And then let everyone in the class know.

Haha! :haha: I can try... :)
But we never get much homework anyway
I will start later today or tomorrow, hoping I can get it done

ItsaMystery
10-10-2006, 03:22 AM
Good job so far D!

If you have time, I think it would make the jump more realistic if you had his right leg shoot up just before his left foot kicks off the ground. Just a thought ;P

Mikademius
10-10-2006, 12:11 PM
So... Diablos. Going for the gold ey?

So far so good, but as you say you have some tweeking to do. I feel that the thing that really makes this character feel weightless is that his legs don't stretch out at take-off. He actually flies a little. When he goes down to get power for the jump keep his legs at the ground for 3-4 frames more (from his most down position) Also, why on earth would you use IK for his arms here? Ditch it.

M :halo:

I use ik for everything, yeah, thats right everything. 100% IK, except for the fingers.

But I have know ideas on what I want to do this time around.

I'm covering for someone this week, so I'm missing one of my days off... but I'll be getting it back on Sunday. Can I humbly ask for a one day extension, please? If I just have what I can do today, it'll be ok, but I have something in mind that will take a little more time. By Sunday night I should have something with a bit of a "plot".
Y/N?

BiG ToE-3DT
12-10-2006, 01:56 AM
I don't mind, but it's not up to me, you need to ask everyone else.

I could ues the extra time too, I need to start a new low poly comp and my family needs me to illustrate some stuff for them to use in court.

DerekSc
12-10-2006, 02:53 AM
Cool, thanks.
Does anyone else mind extending the dealine by a day?

hammering3D
12-10-2006, 03:11 AM
well, in past weeks, 3 weeks chalenge where not look so long, actualy in the end I really not realize it where past 3 weeks , and probably I'll hide beiond trees anyway :( ...so by me one day extension is ok, and one week extension is fine by be ...

ItsaMystery
12-10-2006, 07:00 AM
I've been so busy with school and college stuff recently that I haven't had the chance to even start yet! .____.'

I wouldn't mind a day/week extention as well.

DerekSc
12-10-2006, 07:17 AM
Wow, yeah, an extra week would be cool. Hahaha! "Cool". Oops, sorry, inside joke, you'll get it soon enough.

Btw, I can't get over how clever your avatar is, Itsa. It really rocks, good job.

ItsaMystery
12-10-2006, 08:02 AM
Thanks man :haha: I actually didn't make it; my friend did.

I have an infatuation with penguins (namely, rockhopper penguins...<3...*cough*), and my friend just made this logo for me one day. Actually, she created the logo and put it onto a black t-shirt for me as part of a secret-santa type gift. I then asked for the logo file itself because I absolutely loved it. I agree that it is extremely creative x3

I'll be sure to pass along the kudos and compliments :haha:

BiG ToE-3DT
12-10-2006, 08:53 AM
so then you guys want an extra week then, instead of the day?

DerekSc
12-10-2006, 09:19 AM
Yeah, that would be cool. I can guarantee you'll see something extra from me.

Diabolos
12-10-2006, 10:29 AM
Don't look at me, I can't say anything - I asked for the last extension, and I have no problem with updated deadlines....... :haha:

D,

BiG ToE-3DT

it has been written.

Freespace-3DT
12-10-2006, 08:47 PM
From now on, just make the challenges 3 weeks long :)
Would save people the effort of asking for extensions :)

hammering3D
13-10-2006, 12:57 AM
hmm ... no ... I think every user shood have 1 extension card ;P to use it when he want, and the winer of chalenge shood win an extra extension card :D ... lol I think staying to much on Pc cause brain damage :D

Freespace-3DT
13-10-2006, 02:00 AM
So let's compete for these Extension Cards, which, when we win, we get more of, in order to extend competition time so that we can improve our animations in order to win further extentions. Boy, what a rat trap. ;P

BiG ToE-3DT
13-10-2006, 07:32 AM
see, now that sounds like a competition. No more of this fighting for first to get nothing. Now, we fight for time.

ItsaMystery
13-10-2006, 08:55 AM
Dang, that's pretty intense right there. :P

DerekSc
13-10-2006, 08:56 AM
Sounds like a movie poster:

In a world where animation is a challenge,
they will fight for nothing no longer!

THE THREEDY
CHALLENGES

Now, we fight for time.

:haha:

Freespace-3DT
13-10-2006, 12:52 PM
Heck! This gave me an ideea for a future challenge! A movie trailer! We just invent something and make a trailer for what would be a feature-length cinematic movie. Can range from a 10 second teaser to a fullblown minute if you want to. How does that sound??

BiG ToE-3DT
13-10-2006, 05:55 PM
sounds like it belongs in the idea thread, haha. But yeah does sound good, like if we took snips of all the animations we have done so far and try to put them together to make a story of some sort.

only problem is that a few of you haven't jumped in on as many as the rest.

Well not snips of challenges, but new content! This could be a mega challenge, separate from the bi/tri weekly challenges. This could have a deadline untill 1st December, and get a showing at the Frontpage, then anyone can come and vote, for a period of 10 days, and on 11 December you give out some prizes, like a Texture Cd or a tutorial. I'm just thinking... this could diversify the Speed Challenges, add some exciting stuff for us to do, and overall increase the magnitude of what we do around here.

XYZ
13-10-2006, 11:40 PM
LOL .. that sounds like funn, , and when is the deadline? I think I'm in.

Now, I am probablly just about the definition of a noob, so take what I say with a grain of salt.

What I see that could be changed to make it more realistic is the feet seem to stay flat relative to both platforms the entire time, when he jumps he should rotate up to the ball of his feet just before he leaves the ground. Then, when he lands his left knee seems to give a little, then "snap" back to being straight, I would say try to leave it bent. Both of his elbows do the snap to being bent at the end, these you should probablly just smooth out the motion. Also, it does look a little like its in slow motion, I think you
should speed the whole thing up.

Otherwise, it looks great! Good to see another Blender user here on the forums, it makes me feel not quite so poor.

:-)

I'm glade to see we got more challengers. I'll start working on mine soon, I will give the low poly comp a few days rest.

Mikademius
18-10-2006, 12:45 AM
Mesciurius: You need to work more on the timing itself here. Ditch the animated camera so one can see the animation of the character. That's what's important here. I'd start off by setting the main poses. (start, anticipation, jump, upper pos, landing/contact, down) I would set all these frames on ones. Right next to eachoter. Then I'd drag the frames out in the timeline till it fits perfectly. Ignore the inbetweening for now. If you can manke it feel rigth in the blockingphase here you should have no problems smoothing it out with breakdowns and some manually tweaked inbetweening. As it is now, it's too floating :)

good to see you XYZ, two things.

1. you will need to post it in the the final entry thread.
2. you need a screen grab to show your keyframes.

DerekSc

I keep on getting the message, "The playlist format is not recognized." and then I can't watch the video.

Any way you guys could either host to a different site or instead upload a .mov file by chance? If not, I can wait until Sunday.

well on my defense, I used the render preview in max, it only does wma's. So for all you Mac users, time to step up to a real computer. hehehehehehe.

I'll see what I can do for the final render.

You know BiG...rather than me stepping up to a "real compy", you could step up to a real 3D program ;)

BiG ToE-3DT

hehe. that's good, do you mind if I use it in the low poly thread. On second thought, they will have no clue if I'm joking or not.

You know BiG...rather than me stepping up to a "real compy", you could step up to a real 3D program ;)

Booyeah! :)

Ok, here's my pathetic story. I was heading home from work with visions of putting the final touches on my animation and doing my renders, when I turned the corner on my street... and it was dark. The whole street, every building, and fire trucks were driving all over the place. Now, I haven't used every 3d program out there, but I'm fairly certain that most render engines require electricity (don't quote me on that, though).
It's midnight and we just got power back. So it'll get done, but it may be a late night (and all my other nights are filled, so this is it).

BiG ToE-3DT
