View Full Version : 2-sided materials

I purchased part one of the Eva Wild Series a few weeks ago.
It's already been a fantastic investment, I already feel comfortable modelling in three dimensions.

I'm up to the part of the tutorial that covers modelling the back of Eva's ear.
During this section the instructor hides the rest of the face and flips the view around behind the ear.
He then selects the material applied to the polygons and selects "2-sided" which gives the back of the ear a visible material too.

When I tried this however, nothing happened and the back of the ear is still completely invisible.

Here's a screenshot of it. (http://www.nikells.com/3d/ear.jpg)

I'm using 3dsmax 8.0, I'm not sure if this is a change in the program for this version or if I'm just missing something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I haven't been lucky enough to see the dvd but I can say that 2 sided materails don't show up in viewports. But if you really need to see the back side of the ear you can apply a normal modifier to the mesh. It's located in the drop down list while the mesh is selected. Use the little light bulb next to the option to turn it on and of as you move around mesh.

Hi, it's the instructor here. Apologies for the delay. :o I'm glad you are getting along well. The usual reason for this problem is how your personal viewport configuration exists.

1. What you need to do is go into menu: Customize/Preferences

2. Click on the viewports tab.

3. In the Display Drivers section click on Configure Driver

4. Now, assuming that you are using the DirectX driver, you will see an option that says "Use Cached D3DXMeshes". I'm guessing you have this checked at the moment. Uncheck it.

Hopefully this will solve your problem.

Hope that helps! :D

Cheers,
Monte.
