How do you actually see the rays of a light your created, like for a spotlight, how do i acutally see the light itself and not just the result of ti hiting an object.(Maya 7)

In maya this effect is called light fog, and can be applied to point, spot and volume lights.
Create a spotlight then in the attribute editor find light effects >
light fog --> click the checker box, a lightfog node is created.
in the lightfog node you can adjust the color and density attributes of the light fog.

for Max

Create a light source (I can't remember if it works with all kind of lights)
I'm sure it works with spotlight, so create one then go:
Rendering > environment > atmosphere, click the add button, select volume light, in volume light parameters click the button Pick Light ( turns yellow) >
select the light in the viewport. that's it, render.

in volume light parameters you can adjust many values.

Thanks old nick, but now I have another question. I have a room with many windows, how do I get my spot light to shine through all of these windows creating light beams that hit the floor?

Yeah learning 3D is fun though. I also use Max, but at my school we use Maya. But for the image file....Hmm, I think you just go to "manage attachments" below the box you type in when making replies.

U learn maya at skool, must be real fun. Heck I'm still in high skool (final year) :(

Havin trouble on managing attachments, from threedy itself by the looks of it. I just wanted to show the pic from max 7 light fog user reference. That pic's a really good example.
