Well, i have been using max now for about a month and a half.
Since i started karabo's tut. on how to polymodel a car, i found i got alot better. Now i am making everything with planes :D.
But i was wondering how long it really takes to master on how to model a car, a person, animal etc. And i was also wondering how long it would take to model a hamster, a car, a person.
What I think:
Hamster: about 45 minutes
Car: about 2 weeks
Person: 1 week
Lol, i know this thread kinda sounds pointless, but i just want to see how close i am.....
this is a wierd post :)
why would you say a hamster take 45 minutes?
i would imagine if you model a photo-realstic hamster it might just take you as long as to model a full person.. just because its small doesnt mean it doesnt take long ,or has less features and details..
it all really depends on whos modeling ,the genre and the amount of detail ,id say in 2 weeks a exprience modeler can create an awesome full person..
last time i modeled a full model ,which was some kind of creature ,took about 20 hours ,and was far from perfect or photoreal..
so its really depends..

With some reading and hard work any one could be good at using Max in a matter of weeks. Being a proficient user of the program isn't worth much by itself. The thing to remember is that any 3D program is just a tool. Most importantly you need to develop as an artist and that can take a lifetime.

erm, im not good at 3dmodelling either i mean im a beginner, but i think there is no rank as master or pro, there is thing you do, you just have to prctice more, make anything you want :)

that's a tough one. i'd say, for me, the answer is never. i never really feel like i'm good enough. always feel like i'm catching up to how good i should be.
but i guess the journey not the destination is the important part.

You know, I guess your definition of good really depends on what you're trying to accomplish. It think it also depends on your problem solving and artistic skills, as well as your skills of obesrvation and you ability to see things in your head. If you want to increase your skill i reccoment practise practise practise, not just with modeling either, but also with drawing. I also think the other aspects of 3D shouldn't be overlooked like rigging, and so forth.
As for how long things take, I tent to plan on taking 3 to 200 times as long as I exppect a project to take. Despite how fast you are, or how good you are quality work takes a long time and patience is essential. If you're just modeling to have fun, do whatever you want, but if you're doing stuff you plan n showing a prospective employer take your rime and make it tight.
Oh and be sure to "study" lots of "sourcematerial". Depending on what you're intending on creating, "sourcematerial" might include comics, video games, and movies.

I will say that does who stop trying to be better, stop being good.
So aslong as you keep trying and keep working ..you stay
being good :)
We all are potential good..

A low polygon Human like Posers 1 hour
A detailed Human like Posers about 8 hours
Rigging 2 hours
Mapping I ant not good at and depending what ya mapping with 4 hours
So a low polygon Human 7 hours a Detailed Human 13 hours.
After you Model for Years you end up with parts of everything so ya go grab body parts and have a detailed human faster.
car shell 2 hours.
wheels 1 hour
inside 4 hours
motor and stuff 4 hours
11 hours to model.
then ya need to paint texture map.
ya collect car parts also so over time ya just modify or retexture stuff.
If ya work hard at it 3 to 6 months ya will be able to make anything you want.

ok, heres my take on it.
No one is great..everyone is good. You just have to push yourself, that why I hate it when people on this forums, as soon as they get a negative comment they give up, my god, if you look up my name, go to my like second thread (joan of arc) karabo was beating the hell out of me, and you know what, I STILL HAVENT FINISHED!!!!!!!!!! I started like a week ago again on Joan or arc!
As for you questions
Hamster: I would say for photoness 1 week
Car: 1 week (if your friggin talented, karabo, etc etc, you know who you car maniacs are :) )
Person: OMG...I hate people :) for me this takes like months :) but I am sure someone working for blizzard or something can put it all together in like 2 weeks. or less...*shivers at thought of creating it that fast or faster*...
well yeah, it just takes time, I got max 4.5 like 1 yr ago,and I still think I suck..My brother friends, collegues tell me I am good, and that I am getting better, but when I visit these forums, I just say. "WOW" and I hope one day to get that good. Time my friend all it takes is time.

I dunno its wierd, theres 2 different views of a 3d scene/model/whatever:
1. The 3d experienced person (wow, i wonder what techniques he used for that, it has good lighting and shadows, i like the texture.....etc....
2. The average person (wow, that looks perdy)
I dunno, i just remember when i made the transition, dont we all.

The answer is.
If you have luck then maybe 1 day on a person ..
Sometimes..

I think the texturing part takes 1 week =D

i totally hear what you're saying
sometimes i wonder if i've become jaded to 3d graphics, its like when i go to blockbuster or read video game magazines i'm constanly analyzing the art in screen shots or covers or what not, sometimes i wish i could just stop being really analytical and just say wow that's "perdy"
:)

who totally agrees with Kuman and Torlock..ME! well..i dont analyze everything, but when I see movies i do the most, I just say "thats not real" "see how there is a slight glitch in the shirt" and my brother (who also is a comp buff) just tells me "how do you know...shutup.." :) :) :) yeah, movies....hehe
I hear ya guys, If i see a movie most of the time I will see it 2 timesone the second time is for the pleasure of it, first time all I can do is try and figure out how or what they did as well as rip into shots. I start explaining what software they used and what not, in the movie to my girl. which is followed by eyes rolling.
