Subject – Gate Keeper
ALL WIPS AND CONCEPTS ARE TO BE KEPT IN THIS THREAD.

Guide Lines:

What does Gate Keeper mean to you? Your job, if you choose to accept it, is to create (2) models; one is to represent a gate. This gate can be anything you can think of, from a bathroom door, to a hole in the ground. The second model you must create needs to represent the keeper of the gate. This “keeper” like the gate can be anything you can think up. Go crazy with your ideas. If you think a tall dark a pretty young thing that likes wearing spandex and a mask should stand out in front of her sister’s bedroom door, then do so. Take the tri limit and cut it up any way you want, but do not go over the limit.

The specs for this competition will be abit more than ones of the past (10,000 total tris), it may sound like a lot, but you are creating 2 separate models. The Gate, and the Gate Keeper. You get 6 weeks, so do not try and over do it. I want people to finish. So start now.

Judging: 3 categories of judging will apply. 10 points possible for each:

Concept - How well your idea fits the topic
Model – How well the geometry is structured, how well it looks like the subject.
Texture – How well the texture space has been used, and how well the texture is painted/applied.

DUE DATE: December 31st: a Sunday, 6 weeks and a few days from today! 12 (midnight) GMT - SUNDAY

Idea:
Time to be creative. You need to create a gate, and the keeper of that gate. This Is Your Version, there is no right or wrong, because it’s your version.

Poly limit:
10,000 Tris Total. You can do whatever you want with these, just don’t get carried away and don’t exceed the 10,000 Tri Limit.

Textures:
(4) 1024 x 1024 textures. This means (4) 1024 for color, (4) 1024 for bump, (4) 1024 for normals, (4) 1024 opacity, so on and so forth. You can chop these up into whatever you want, but you still need to go all out in your texture.

Textures can be hand-painted or you can use photographic sources. Do what you do.



Final Pictures:

Required In The Final Post (1 post per entry):

- 1 x Winning pose shot. This image can only have "One" pose of your character. No multiple shots or different angles. Just one!

- 1 x Beauty shot of your scene. Feel free to put multiple angles of your character or just one big version or your character on this page. Even better, try to composite a nice art piece similar to the ones in the Winners' Gallery. Be careful how you do this though, simple is often better. It’s up to you.

- 1 x wireframe shot of your scene. Feel free to put multiple wireframe shots or just one big wire frame shot on this page. It is up to you. Must have polycount included.

- 1 x texture sheet that includes all your used sheets squeezed into "one" sheet.

- Concept Sheet (Only if you have a concept)

You must provide a screen grab of your wire frame with your poly count, with the actual model and all its parts selected. Please don’t Photoshop your Poly counter with a bogus count. Make sure you post all work in progress, including final poly counts and wire frames in the work in progress thread.


A Final Entry Thread will be up and waiting around the end of the 4th week/beginning of 5th week. Don’t forget to submit your work by posting it in the final thread.

Hirokugawa - The original I drew on paper, then scanned it, then fixed some major problems the design had, then re-drew it with a tablet..."Intuos 3" baby!

Fwonline - The concept seems just a little to simple....remember we have 10,000 tris to work with so I'd say ad some detail!

i still have a lot to work on, so this isn't my final concept (i've changed the entire thing 3 times already). anyway, he's both the lock and key for the gate. i still have to make him look more flashy...

* I would fix some texturing issues. Looks like you have some stretching in areas.

* The camera angle makes the image look small and not very 'larger than life'. If you know what I mean. If you are standing in a large city with tall buildings, and you look up ... it is kinda scary. Your image doesnt have the same feel. Lower the camera and look up at your image.

* The opening to the mouth looks like a ball ... and not an opening. IMO.

Nice start tho. I want to see updates! :dance:

Thank you for the advice, I've noticed the stretching as well, and just haven't really gotten around to fixing it yet

I'm still going to mess with the camera view as well a bit

As for the mouth, I don't see the ball thing :???:
Looks like a wide open mouth with glow coming out of it

In any case, I'll check it out a bit more :D

i'll try to remember to use all the sheets this time.

my idea is along the lines of fairies and elves the keepr is to the gate of their world deep in the forest type setting it won't be happy and sparkerly though :evil:

Ah, it was the camera angle, and I think I've got a much better one now
And I made the stairs much smaller and with much more, so it's like an enourmous amount of steps

I'll be adding like a silhouette of a guy going up the stairs too

Dammit Robbie! That's something you already had! God - start from scratch for once!

Anyway, he looks very generic; classic D&D-style fantasy character, save for maybe the amount of bulk he has. I've never seen a knight..ugh *gatekeeper...that looked like he could seriously give Arnold (from Commando) a slight scare. Yours is almost that knight...I mean, *Gatekeeper :lame:

Also, BigToe3D - thanks for the 6 week limit - that give me two weeks away from school and work to actually FINISH this one!!! December 27th...got it!!

I'm taking almost a matrix style
The "character" is the building itself
Although I'm going to have a second low poly character going up the stairs and being attacked

Don't worry, the final idea will be clear as to what the gatekeeper is

For my gate keeper guy I wanted him to bust out of the ground, I thought it would be cool or he could just stay in front of the gate with a whole bunch of roots and vines holding him in the ground or something. Not sure yet.

i skipped the concept part and went strait to the modelling. ive used a little over 1000 tris so far and havent made the head or the hands yet. i plan on using around 2000 tris for each gargoyle, 500 for each pillar that they stand on, and 5000 for the gothic gate and scenery. if i could figure out how to upload an image, you could see what i got so far.

i think you should do the gate is keeper thingy... but you should lower the specs also....

Mine are not big... the two guys are quite puny, and the first one is a kid.

Hey V3nom,

Love the long coat with the wild stitching. If it's made of old/worn leather or some type of animal skin, would yield some very nice textures. Like the big sword as well. I know the gigantic sword fad is a little played, but I like the look of yours.

Should have my concept up in a day or two. Still buzzed over the 10K tris. :crazy:

Hello everybody :wave: . This is my first challenge to join in and I hope not my last. ^^
I've done this in like 10 minutes then my hand got tired :) .
This is the idea only, I will draw another 1 or 2 pictures for the gate and the hero.
The idea is, a dead dragon (the previous keeper of this kind of crystal mine), a crystal mine and its present keeper. The scene happens in the desert.
I have a lot of work on the image because it was just a fast one and i still haven't learned some things in drawing (like anatomy- bones, proportions and so on)

first idea was, an old man with a shotgun, like some redneck guy, sitting into a tnt box, taking a nap and a little gate near him to nowhere.... but it´s sounds more cartoonish.......who knows someday maybe..

im wondering about modelling a lowpoly chain
im thinking the best way would be to use two perpendicular intersecting polys, (cross section would look like a "+" sign) with an opacity map.
im not sure if theres a better way though.
also to rigg it for animation, what should i do?

depends on where this chain is located. But to answer your first question, yes that way of making it would work fine.

Now, if the chain is hanging on the chest, then you would have to rigg it seperately, just attach it to the rest of the model. If the chian is hanging from lets say a tree or something of that manner, then use at least 6 ik bones to allow it full motion.

ok, i changed a few things and started my gate concept. this guy is chained up there to the tree for all eternity to guard the gate that leads to the land of immortals. and the gate won't open either unless the key is removed from his head and put into the lock on his chest.

Ive been studying several ideas for this, and ive got one pretty much blocked out as a concept. It will be a couple of kids protected by a huge strong wolf (or 2 i haven't decided it yet, poly count will have effect on this desition) keeping the entrance to their underground hometown which has its entrance through a large ancient tree. Pretty much thought within a polar-like environment. I will post some sketches when i get home tonight, and perhaps study a second option.

LOL this is just a fooling round concept :P mybe if I have time left after doing my original one I'll do this one just 4 fun.
Inpw@ I like the first one too, allthough it would have to be a beautyfull priestess or bald monk guarding the temple using they'r chi LOL If you want to do a samuray it would make more sense that he was guarding a castle gate.

Hey Big-Toe, have a somewhat dumb question:

The specs listed we can have (4) 1024x1024 textures (ya'know "This means (4) 1024 for color, (4) 1024 for bump, (4) 1024 for normals...")

So does that mean we can split up the Keeper and Gate over (4) color maps, and (4) normal maps, and etc...?

yes, you can cut up the 4 1024 maps into anything you want, multiples of 2, those are game specs and this is a game model.

That means (1) 1024 map can be made into (4) 512, (8) 256, (16) 128. And you have 4, so that's alot of texture space.

ok so i have most of the gate keeper done i kind of went a little crazy he's going to be around 6ks to 6.5ks and the rest will be for the gate.

i question though with the limit is that just the gate and keeper or is the props for the scene to be included in the total, i read the front page again, and it seemed not to mention including props, but i just want to make sure.

My concept:

I think the gate is enough or probably adding some more detail. What more can you get in the desert? I'm putting my budget to my character. :haha:

He has long limb for fast crawling movement. He has enchanted carapace on its forearms and chest, not totally invincible but nothing can penetrate this enchanted carapace. He has the similar ability to jump like a grasshopper, so a normal being would instantly be killed by a single kick. This guardian, being the only of its race left, swore to protect the eggs inside the hole that will hatch only after 2 millenium. But rumour says that the eggs can be the ultimate cure for any diseases.

Anyway, this probably going to be my first serious modeling. I hope you guys can lend me a hand in the process. I'm using 3Ds Max now and I'm going to major in digital animation course in the next two years.

hmm... in my concept you can see those lines coming from his back, well they're chains, i just haven't drawn them in yet. here's the quote:
this guy is chained up there to the tree for all eternity to guard the gate that leads to the land of immortals.
it's not a problem if you do the same thing as me, this is just friendly competition after all. just know that i had that idea first. anyway, good luck to you, and everyone else for that matter.

There's plenty of time, just keep focusing on your concept until you're happy with it. This time around I vowed to fight the urge to start modeling until I had the look I wanted.

I actually like your concept. You just need to hash out the details, .... (How he's chained up?, Positioning in relation to the gate?, Look of the gate?, What type of environment surrounds the gate? etc.)

Just my 2 cents. Hope I didn't offend.

I know what you mean, and I am thinking outside the box, and simply discovered I like the idea of a tormented human trying to escape his eternal prison and duty of guarding a gate, more than (I just looked at the emoticons) something like a banana dancing in front of a back entrance to a grocery store or something :smug:

thinking outside the box, is thinking like me. haha, i only joke. but yeah, the chained wrists thing has been done many times before, but the involuntary servant is still hip and fresh. add some meat hooks, like you said, maybe a few stitches, a dash of self mutilation (surgically removed eyelids, etc), and some indication that he's not happy to be there, and we have a winner. oh, and don't do something cliche' like just put bones on the floor or anything, pick a specific body part and make it the theme (eyes everywhere, hands coming out of the walls, faces, contorted bodies carved into the gate, ect).

me, well i'm a bit upset. my tablet started crapping out on me and i'm thinking about revising my concept again. also, i started to model and failed, bad. it's like i totally forgot how to model. in anycase, it's been an off week for me... i think i need a break.

Plus I've never modeled anything correctly on the 1st or 2nd try. Usually happens the 3rd or 4th attempt.

Nope, no particles, but you can use oppacity maps, take a few planes, toss an oppacity on there to try and fake what the particles will do, you can even take a render of the particles and apply that render as a texture to the plane.

As for photoshoping the final renders, thats fine. Just make sure people know the final image isn't all 3d, but they should know that when they see your wires and polycount.

BigH@ I apreciate u giving advice on my concept, your guardian is blind right? Is he protecting some temple taht emits a blinding light or something?

I have my concept roughly made out, only 2 things left to decide:
1. As u can see the ice guy's coat is held together by rings, but then it looks too much like a shower curtain and would be really hard on the polycount, so i decided to replace the ring with strips of leather. What ya think?
2. Should I put that headband on him? It might seem as a minor thing, but doing it or not has to be settled before modeling.

the oppacity map should be treated like all the other maps. To make it more clearer, you get 4 diffuse maps, and then anything that corresponse with that map. Like, if you need a spec map or bump map, the oppacity map it treated like those.

Another way of looking at it would be to say, you have 4 materials, in each material are slots to help enhance the diffuse map, you can use all those slots, or just one. It's up to you.

Back to the keeper:

I don't know if my gatekeeper is blind or not. I just know no one can see his face. He doesn't like for people to look at. It really pisses him off. The gate is just a portal, and he sits and stands in front guarding it.

I was thinking about adding a key element to the gate, but I'm not sure at this point. Any thoughts?

Just go with your gut. This is the perfect time to hash out all those details. I say go for the "cool factor".

As far as rings vs. leather stitching: With all the texture space we have, you can simulate a large amount of detail without the cost of all that geometry. I would go for the stitching. But again, go with your gut. Please correct me if I'm wrong anyone.

I am thinking of making an area for the mouth to show, this way I can show some type of facial expression with the mouth area, and lose the back faces and connect the head to the helmet, to get rid of some faces so I can get rid of alot of geometry and I can add more details to other areas. I hope ya guys like. I am still playing around with weapon design and stuff.

I decided to enter this contest. Since there is such a huge time limit I'll actually be able to finish it. Woot! So I came up with a little girl has my concept. I was thinking something like a villian guarding a gate to her master the final boss. I took this idea from ppl talking about the boss man and thought it be a nice spin for gate keeper. I wanted to do a small girl something from kingdom hearts. Also I got inspired defaultalias concept with the key as part of the character. However, I wanted to go witha weapon which I think he mention later. I was going to do a sword but that idea is so over played I went with a Scythe. Here 2 concept pieces I'm working on. Since we have such a large time scale I'm going to work out all the concept in huge detail before I model. SInce modeling will take me no time and I want every piece of detail for my textures already laid out. =)

On my next post I will show wireframes. I am going to get rid of the back faces on the head after I do my normal maps on the highres and merge the head in with the helmet, and that will bring me well below 10k. I am going to add some other things on to the model still more accesories and armor stuff. and a mouth.

Im a big fan of horror movies, so I wanted to incorperate some of that into my concept. I'll have a Leather-Face type character as the gate keeper. His chainsaw is the key. Im not really sure what I will do for a gate, but I want to play up the rural/country house aspect. These are just a few sketches I done, i'll do final orthos when I have everything worked out.

Active X- haha, i spelled it wrong on purpose. :D your images are a bit large. look at everyone else's images, most are under 800 pixels wide, yours is as big as my desktop. size em down a bit so we can correctly see them. and for WIP, it's faster to just post screen grabs. as for your model, even without a wire, i can see you have four 8+ sided cylinders, with two subdivisions in them at the top of those two 8+ sided cylinders that make up the gate. and those are further subdivided at the top. those will have a big impact on the count of the model.

ShadowBreeze your character is looking good, so far, I would like to get some more looks at your character. I was curious whats up up with the bell and your posts you got going there? Here is some of my advice that I think that will help you out. Get rid of the bell and your posts and put alot more detail on that Trim surrounding the portal. Use your texure to put in more detail on that gate. personally I think the bell and the posts you got are just eating up texture space and really arent adding that much to the gate. So yeah, more texture detail on the gate. You are my friend and I want to see you do well.

I'm trying to design how exactly I want him attached to the gates.
I was thinking either..

A) Have spears/spikes stabbed into his hands and feet and chest to have him literally impaled to the door
B) Have his hands/feet literally molded into the door and have the gate itself a weird hybrid of flesh, wood and steel
C) Have claws or hooks holding him in place

Ahhhh interesting ShadowBreeze, I was going to ask ya do you plan on putting any writing on the gate? Like signs or symbols of some sort? I think that would help alot.

Agent X- yeah there will be symbols around the gate and on the rocks celtic ones as its fey inspired, oh andi know i could get rid of some pillars but i'm making a scene i have in my head and it's a good challenge to see if i can do it all within the limit, not just the gate and keeper, lol it will be interesting.

http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/2534/stitchxh3.jpg well at first I thought of a stitch like in the first one, then I thought of it being held together by rings (or rope) like in the second but it looked like a shower drape, lastly I thought of a more modern look with just straps, no stitching. In any case there is a distance between the two pieces of leather.
I am now leaning towards the latter, help me make up my mind so I can start modeling pls :D

BigToe - for the final are we allowed to paint like the sky in? Or you want me to dome / plane with a texture on it? Cause I'm building a ground,gate and a character. I was hoping I could just 2d the sky in =D


You can paint for the final render, but the idea for this comp is to make a scene, so if you paint anything in, it will take away from your points when voting starts.

Nope, no particles, but you can use oppacity maps, take a few planes, toss an oppacity on there to try and fake what the particles will do, you can even take a render of the particles and apply that render as a texture to the plane.

As for photoshoping the final renders, thats fine. Just make sure people know the final image isn't all 3d, but they should know that when they see your wires and polycount.

It's fun that the allowed stuff is basically what most in-game particle systems do anyway! I guess some apps don't include particles in the poly count though, so you would have to fake/mimic it with real polys to get a true scene count... :evil:

I'm still bouncing around concepts at the moment, but don't have my scanner set up. Will hopefully post some interim ideas soon

Just preview textures at the moment, havent started mapping yet and about halfway through my total polycount. Question though, just recently upgraded to max 9 and it doesnt have the same poly counter, which counter should i include with the final image? the viewport counter when you hit 7? Or is there another tucked away that i should use?

I would do either style as an opacity/texture map. That way it's easy to change if you decide to go with the other design.

Hirokugawa, I like the sound of A or C. Either one would be lovely.

polysmooth Very nice concept. I'm like details on his armor and gloves. I have small suggestion about this concept. It use a quantity of circle forms (gate/portal, sign on keeper neck, his earrings, etc.). May be desigin this circles like clock-faces? So, it becomes timekeeper - interesting concept for my view.

I'm thinkin about going with A, since that was my initial idea, and it also has a stronger feeling of the character being forced onto the wall to guard it, perhaps as a sacrifice or something.

I don't have a proper concept posted (and I'm not even sure I'll have time to finish it) but here's what I've got so far. It's going to be an homage to game characters that appeared in games like the old school Silent Hill or most recently Fear. The concept of a creepy child is kinda overdone in movies, but what the hey.....kids have always scared me. : )

Quick question: I keep getting errors when I attempt to up a jpeg straight away to the forums (or any other format for that matter). Is there perhaps a bandwidth restriction on the number of images a member may post?

I've been following the tread for sometime now.
Havn't really decided on entering or not. (currently found a job + in Cgtalk's colossus contest thingy). Been doing a lot of research for real time stuffs.
Like normal/parallax mapping. Anyone know's of maya's "CGfx plugin" from what i've read on it, it can use/display .fx & HLSL shaders (realtime stuffs).

Think Max can do that too. If so, might have to get into max more >, <

ANYWAYS, i got til Jan 14th for that other contest, so, in the meantime, I'll join this one, and hone my l33t 5k1llz :D

Well my curious friend. . . . . this expression you speak of was born many moons ago. By the way, nice texture shadowbreeze. I'm totally noob at texturing, never tried it before, but I am planning to learn it during this process.

hey ppl! Finally got to do some 3d and what do i find...A great challenge! Must participate for lowpoly practice, just hope i can stick with it to the end and in time.

Great work and ideas, some quite outside the box. robbiek1000, defaultalias, polysmooth, BigH...really nice concepts. And great work from everyone else too, Agent-X, shadowbreeze etc etc

Here's my first quicky sketch, thing... :) Should have cleaned and fixed them abit in photoshop, but i'm lazy :o and they are enough for reference. Something to get me started. I'll post my gate and pose sketches later...

Still not sure about the tail, i don't want him to look too evil, with the horns and all, more of a neutral gatekeeper. Also don't know if i should strech the axe for two hands. When i have finished the gate and this guy and if i still have polys left, i'll ad some more to him, small armour stuff mayby etc.

We'll see, yeah I've got 6 weeks, but I also have a TON of other things to do.
Anatomy and drawing are my main focusses right now, so maybe if I get a good grasp on both within the nest 2 or 3 weeks I'll rejoin.

Considering I can easily FINISH the project in a week or so, it's just a matter of priorities is all. =)
