Great Start, Suirebit! I really like what you did for the head (and the glowy part on the chest :)). I might add a bit of detail to separate the cloak from the body but very cool anyway.

First for some comments:
Suirebit: very cool design, but a bit dark which makes it hard to see.
Rahakasvi: if it wasn't for the horns, your alien would look almost cute with it heart shaped head :) wonderful concept.
Hexonal: wow really like what you did with the mouth and general design for this alien. Very nice execution. The markings around it's eye adds a good finishing touch to it.
And now for my own entry:
i think I'll have to do a little explanation about it. I was doodling around looking for a good concept for an alien, but I liked none of the things i came up with. I remembered while watching tv the other day, the speaker using the words "illegal aliens" about mexicans crossing the US border without permit. So here is my Illegal Alien :haha:

Your idea is excellent. Never though of that. You have an amazing skill of using colors. (Not this one alone)

Hi people!
1. Suirebit - great cocept.Add a bit more highlights to the robe and maybye make the red eyes(correct me if I'm wrong) more visible(but it's a not important detail) .Realy great job!:)
2. Rahakasvi - nice idea. One thing,if I may suggest,is that you could play more with highlights and shadows to give your painting more depth.Anyway nice idea. Keep on trucking !
3. Hexonal - excellent one! It reminds me the "Predator". You could add some reflections and dampness to the eyes,to give it a more believable look.Anyway it,s a really, really, rrreeaaally great concept!
4. Alletun - man, I've expected everything...almost everything :D :D :D. Btw excellent painting (as allways). :D :D :D
Ok. My turn (took about 3h + PS + tablet). "Enjoy"... :

-------------------------------------------------------------
Suirebit: I like your concept. there's a kind of cool simplicity about it and the character appears to have no emotion or sympathy. a lot of this feeling comes, I think, from the interesting blue lighting coming from the back. as such, I think the picture could do with some more contrast, especially making the shadows in the cloth, etc. really dark and making those highlights in the helmet and armor really pop with bright colors. don't be afraid to use contrast, man! the character itself though, like I was saying, is also cool. I especially liked the lighting and the way you made the three red lights at the top look like they are coming from behind the dark "glass" on his helmet. maybe you could have put a few more details into the clothing/armor, for example, the shoulder thing doesn't seem properly connected to his body, and the lighting on it is kind of inconsistent. but overall, a creative concept and it has a nice mood. good work!
Rahakasvi: haha, that's a funny little guy you got there. my first impression was something like, "well, nothing could ever have a head shaped like that," but then I though, well, it's an *alien* so I really can't judge what an alien can or can't look like without having seen one myself. maybe to make a bit more "believable," though, that center horn and the top of the head could probably be raised a bit. but that's not really much of a problem. the main thing I think that could improve the picture would be changing the angle, making the composition more dynamic. right now you're looking the alien straight in the face at a dead angle and his horns extend to the edge of the picture. as a viewer of the painting, this makes me more aware of the edge and the angles of the composition don't lead me to a focal point. my eyes just kind of go from the middle somewhere and then just trail off the page. maybe if you pulled out a little bit and made the alien at a slight quarter turn or something like that, the painting would be more visually interesting. I will say, though, you're doing some interesting things with brushstrokes and you seem to be playing around a bit with lighting. keep practicing and nice work.
Hexonal: Interesting one here. sort of a Predator-esque cyborg-ish thing in design. I really like the shadowy vibe you have going on in this piece. you really used the lighting effectively. the character itself is interesting. he has this sort of defeated look on his face. it's sort of an eerie emotional tone. the tubes are pretty cool. and the way you rendered the shape of the head very well done. oh, heh, I don't want to say too much, but I kind of snickered a little at the shape of his mouth , but no offense intended. I think one thing that will help send this picture towards improvement would be to sharpen things up a bit. right now everything seems kind of blurry, which is actually sort of interesting in a way, but I think it could be better if at least some of it was sharper, like maybe the parts closer to the foreground, which would create some depth of field. it just seems to me like that left side of his face should have a harder edge and his eyes should have brighter highlights to make them look shinier. but these are all just opinions. overall, this is some great work. keep it up!
Alletun: haha, I was wondering if someone would use one of the "other" meanings for the word alien. the portrait itself is great. the proportions are good and you can really see how worn out he has become over the years. you have also managed to make one of those portraits in which the character is looking at you no matter what angle you are looking at him from. in fact, it's almost like an optical illusion or something (maybe it's just me), but when I moved my head from one side to the other, not just his eyes, but his whole face seemed to move slightly to follow me. crazy stuff. initially I had some problems with the grey background, but now I don't think it's really the issue. I know I've said this to everyone else, too, but seriously, maybe some more contrast in here would make this piece really stand out. some highlights in his hair and on his nose and some deeper shadows on his neck and clothes might help create more dimension in the piece. but, yeah, great use of brushstrokes and great portrait.
Lukanus: hey, I really like the style of this one. it's sort of a pseudo-2d/3d approach. also, nice use of textured brushes here. he kind of reminds me of an alien Juggernaut (like in the X-Men), but maybe that's just me. very good work with the colors and highlights, in this piece. his eyes look really reflective. maybe more work could have been done on the teeth--they don't look as detailed or well rendered as the rest of the painting, almost like they were an afterthought. when you look at the painting part by part, everything in the painting seems to be alright, but then when you step back and look at it as a whole, there's something strange with the dimensionality of it. for some reason, the top of the helmet and forehead seems sort of flat, but then the reast of it (maybe the bottom 60% of the painting) has a great sense 3-dimensionality about it. the overall effect is that the top of his head seems to be caving in or something. I'm not sure how to sort this out because when I cover up the bottom half and just look at the top, it looks fine. hmm, maybe it's something to to with the shading. but anyway, good job, man, this is some nice work.
Jim #1000: well, you're rather prolific in your alien portraits, eh? I'm not saying it's a bad thing, by the way, hehe. let's go one at a time, shall we?
-#1: haha, yeah, that's your typical cartoon alien guy. nice work here. he's a funny looking guy and I like the the sort of kid's story book pastel painting style. a few things I think you could do better are 1) do something with the background. that rainbow-ish color isn't doing much for me, and in my opinion kind of clashes with the color of the alien. and 2) change the angle, if only slightly. this is the angle you always see these cartoon aliens from. now imagine maybe pushing the viewpoint up slightly , and looking downwards on his big fishbowl helmet. if you're imagining it the way I am (and hopefully you are, heh) it would make the picture slightly more dynamic and interesting. but of course, these are opinons only, and I'd say the pic looks pretty good overall.
-#2: ok, I did a bit of a double-take here. I couldn't even believe the same person did this painting and that last one. it's a completely different style! I really really like the brushstrokes in this one--very dynamic and layered. also very good use of contrast and lighting. the design of the alien itself is also great! his expression and exaggerated features are just perfect--cartoony goodness, indeed. the golden "frame" is a little cheesy-looking in my opinion, but it doesn't detract much from the picture. I'd say just put a background on it (at least a few brush strokes or something) and this would be one great portrait.
-#3: ack! crab guy with light-bulb eyes! aaaahhh! that is one mean looking dude you got there. that's cool how you rendered those bumpy, shiny textures on him. very convincing, indeed. it sort of seems like you just kind of "stopped" at his body, though. but, yeah, I know the focus of this challenge is supposed to be the head. overall, this one is very cool, and has some interesting details. nice example of character design.
Alletun: the first thing that struck me here was the colors you used! very interesting colors, that don't get used often enough, in my opinion. the way you used the colors is actually quite well done--the whole painting has a flow and consistency to it. also, nice use of contrast and shadow. you have a very recognizable style, and I can almost always pick out your paintings after seeing your stuff in the last few challenges. I don't really know how to describe your style. it's sort of post-modern, art deco or something (please forgive me if I sound like a jackass). you got relatively simple, well-defined shapes and usually pretty bright colors with deep contrast. I like it, it's very painterly and unique. with this painting in particular, there are a few things maybe you could do to improve. for one, I'm kind of on the fence about the way the character is portrayed as a "floating" bust. on the one hand, the contrast at the bottom kind of helps to direct your eye toward the focal point of the eyes. on the other hand, having him sitting in the middle like that kind of makes it as if there is nothing pulling the painting together composition-wise. I think you get away with this a little because of the way you used your colors so well, but still, I think somehow the composition could be tightened up a bit. also, compared to the brushstrokes in the character, the brushstrokes in the background seem kind of half-hearted. but yeah, I know it's a speed paint and you gotta do what you gotta do. but overall, yeah, a great piece with your signature style.
rodriguez: interesting alien there. I guess he's sort of more of a modified human, or android? anyway, you have some good things going on here. your lighting is pretty consistent and your character design is actually pretty believeable the way you rendered him. but there's just something...missing. just that special x-factor that separates the technically well-done paintings from the truly great paintings, you know? but I think there are definite paths towards improving it, since you already have created a solid base. I think for one, this painting would benefit immensely from contrast. the colors right now seem sort of muddy except for the clothes and the hair (which are done quite well, by the way). really, you have to put some deeper shadows and sharper highlights in there. also, maybe for details like in the hair, switch to a smaller brush for a while to really get in there and make the hair look like its namesake. I'd say just the opposite for the face--maybe go with a bigger brush at lower opacity for a while just blocking in colors so you have a little less inconsistency in the gradation of tones. but then of course, maybe afterward go in and put in some details. overall, you got an interesting character here, and it's clear you got some skills. keep practicing, and you will certainly improve. keep it up!
stephendm: oy! you changed your name! hehe, whatever. anyway, whoa, that is one crazy looking I don't know what you got there. very cool the way you painted this on black - really makes the highlights pop and the shadows work very well. I don't know what kind of alien this is (some kind of combination ash tray, skull, insect, android, demon creature?) or what crazy planet it would come from, but I like it. it's an interesting design, almost like it's cobbled together from the spare parts of other creatures and machines. the way you placed it in the frame, I'd say it works pretty well compositionally. I'm not really sure what else to say, except it kind of seems strange to me that the eyes are not shiny, but I guess that's more a personal preference thing. other than that, I guess maybe just make the brushstrokes a little more consistent to help bring the painting together, because right now the way put down the paint and textures in different parts of the alien are in very different styles. but in a way it kind of works in that it emphasizes the "cobbled-together" style of the character. anyway, some really nice work on this one.
cartoonera:
#1: ah, here's a creepy cartoon alien guy. there's something oddly unsettling about this character you've made, here. something about his expression just makes it seem like maybe he knows something I don't know, and he wants you to know it. anyway, I like the overall style of it. sort of that pastel, painterly cartoon look. and the character is just kind of funny to look at. his tentacle moustache, his half-closed eyes, crooked smile--it all works together pretty well. I think you could have worked a bit more on his body, especially with all the detail you put in the head. also, the body seems a bit too low, and since there's no neck, it's like the head isn't really attached to it. and also, that background just seems out of place, you know? here you got a very painterly-looking alien, and then you have a blatantly computer-generated, light generated, gradient-filled background. maybe if you could make a background that matched the style of the alien, it would help a lot. but yeah, I do like the style of the alien, though. the look and colors come together well and the alien guy is like something I could almost see in a Tim Burton movie or something. a few things to improve, but great work overall!
#2: oh, whoops, I just noticed your second one. hmm, I do like your first one better, but this guy is cool, too! especially his eyes! I see that, though, you didn't spend as much time on him as the first one, and it certainly shows. maybe a little more detail could have been used in drawing the lines and making the highlights. also, the body on this guy isn't very convincing, like it sort of blends into the background and it's hard to tell if there's a shadow on it from the head. I see you used some kind of filter to make it look more painterly, but that's cheating! you gotta get in there and paint that thing yourself! haha, but really though, you made your first one look like it was painted without using filters (at least I think). the effect of using filters on this one just kind of makes the painting have a confusing, inconsistent style. I think the main things you should focus on to improve are consistency and details. also of course, things like composition and lighting, but you're actually doing relatively well with that for your style. keep practicing, and keep it up!
drained spirit: you know, I have no idea why, but this reminds me of one of some character from a video game from some time back in the early 90's. oh, and I don't mean that as an insult or anything. he just has this sort of over-the-top alien renegade vibe to him. you know, with that title there "The Last Alien," it even sort of looks like video game case art. just slap a rated "M" for mature thing in the corner and some video game company logo, and there you go. you have some interesting things going on with the character design here. of course, as you probably know, there's some room for improvement. I'd recommend maybe paying more attention to the composition and the way highlights and shadows can create contrast. I don't know the way you paint, but I find something that helps a lot is blocking out the basic shapes in a sort of mid-range to dark color just to get the composition down and then adding in highlights and slowly building details on it. I'm no expert or anything, but almost all the tutorials I've read do it that way, and it really does help you to create a more interesting looking final product. but I'm not trying to discourage you! you got some excellent creativity here. just practice practice with the skills until they catch up with you! keep up the good work.

suirebit: #4, definitely looks commanding and you have rightly given it a priests role. I like the eye pattern u got there; eerie stuff.
Rahakasvi: #7, cute but dangerous as well!!! great concept. Wish you had given prominence to the nose and mouth too. good depth.
Hexonal: #8, amazing work!!! Your color pallette really gives an eerie feel and i think this is very close to an extra-terrestrial. It would definitely fetch high points with concept and the anatomy looks accurate too. Have you actually seen this creature?!!! :)
Alletun: #9, Illegal aliens, Very nicely thought up. Your painting is superb. Very real. The lines on his face, i love it.
Lukanus: #11, mean, mean, alien :), I like your creature a lot, the bicolors you have used reflects the venomous nature of this monster. I expecially like nthe reflection you have given to the eyes. Makes it look more real.
Jim#1000: #14, great strokes and a great idea. He looks like a sentinal. I like the way you have worked on the highlights and shadows.
#21, This is Awesome stuff, very detailed, amazing visulization. The horns have a nice glass effect.
#26, great colors you have used, This is a very beautiful work and i like it a lot. Very humarous.
Kreean: #15, WOW, this one looks fantastic. Very different and your finish is impeccable. great concept. Love your treatment of the creature. You have really brought out a plastic kinda texture to his cloth. great job.
rodriguez: #16, i like the specular you have given the image. Although he has got an unusually thick neck. I bet it would suffice when we see it with the whole body. great job on the hair and face, especially that prominant cheek bone.
stephendm(Crackerlips): #17, WOW, what a texture!!! i love it. very original concept and the way you have worked on the shadows is terrific. I should complement u on the texture again. Great render.
Cartoonera: #18, great work, it looks funny and mysterious
#20, nice concept there,
#27, great finishing. the specular is really definitive and brings out the effect of the sagging skin. All the best.
HA-Jassar: #28, It sure looks bizarre like an alien, awesome smoke effect dude. keep it up.
Nucron: #30, yeah, it sure looks wierd. Nice interpretation and treatment. I must thank you for your comments that you gave and the valuable tips. Thanks again :)
Eetwartti: #33, the texturing looks great. The creature looks very cute.
Kikko: #34, wow, very crisp it looks, great concept.
artecnl: #34, your work has always been the best, and this is the best entry till now as far as i have seen :). your treatment has always been awesome, as it is this time too. The hair is great, the eyes look very real. perfect shading. All the best for the voting.

Yeah, I have put the image onto photobucket.....but then all I can post is a link to the image. It's much better to put it into the post, cos then more people will see it...... Is the only way to put the image into the post to upload it as an attachment?

Here's a 'different' interpretation of an alien :D An alien, misterious elf. Starting from a sketch, then art took control and it evolved into a full scene, croped here for portrait. This part of the image took about 2-3h to complete.
If any is interested to see the full scene, let me know :)

hi,
I thought i would go underwater for this creation. I have here a creature called 'Breeder'. It lives underwater in an alien planet and has it's name because it breeds its young ones in the holes on it's face and it is the most venerable predator. In this scene i show it face to face with a small predatory fish but the latter unfortunately has just lived it's last day
software: Alias Sketchbook and Adobe Photoshop CS2
Time: 5 hrs

Thatīs a hell of a painting! Itīs simply awesome.
I like the way you use the brushes... it shows me that you are a Pro.
Iīm just curious about it what kind of brush and what setting you use? I know that it sounds like a noob question, and I know that this information will not teach me how to use them properly, but for me this is the right step in the right direction.
Away from manga and comic to a more realistic and artistic style.
Thanks in advance!

Only those who take part by submitting their entries for the challenge would be allowed to submit their votes. votes from all those who wont be taking part in the challenge, wont be considered.
to avoid confusions, only vote if u post an artwork.

There will be always people with better skills, just try to recognize what didnīt work and get better...

Hello everybody
I need to clarify certain things about some of the votes I received for my image, the following members:
CrowZ
beshoo
oj212
Are simply a group of my friends who I told about forums.3dtotal.com and the speed painting challenges that am participating in and asked them to check it out sometime.
Therefore they thought it would be a supportive thing to do voting for me, although I think its not a fair vote
. Because its a vote to a friend.
So I apologize for their actions, and totally ready to accept the moderator decision according to this matter.

Those referred posts seemed to be spam, the reason for artist voting is because the suspected cheating that happened some time ago, with people spamming for votes.
You are definately right about it a challenge of skill. Winning for me would be nice, but it doesn't mean that my art is less quality if i don't.

MoKhatib, that was very honourable of you to mentioned this. Coming to think of it, your piece was not too bad. Not bad at all. :-)

@ MoKhatib - I understand that bro. Your friends put you in a quite unpleasent situation. Wargrafx mentioned it already your last post is a sign of honour and dignity.
@ wargrafx - Sorry I didnīt mean to troll around. :hurt: I hope i didīt sound like: the winners are the best and the rest of the paintings are crap. What I tried to say is, that the winners are better in certain things (Colour Theory, Perspective, Shading, Lighting, Anatomy etc.)Actually thatīs the reason why they are the winning... :haha:
My personal opinion is that painting is 80% technique and 20% talent,
and weīve got to have enough self-criticism, and realize where weīre not good at, to evolve.

If as Artecnl quoted...
"Only those who take part by submitting their entries for the challenge would be allowed to submit their votes."
Then there is no problem.
Let MoKhatib's friends, indeed anyones friends vote for who ever they want. It will not change the outcome.
Indeed it can be seen solely as praise and encouragment for a friend, and as such, a good thing. Tis not the end of the world.
But this only works if.....
"Only those who take part by submitting their ..............................."
@MoKhatib
No worries mate. Class post #94.

MoKhatib donīt know if your friends all live in the same appartment or if they were in the same room together when they posted but if you look at the time of posting itīs like 3-4 minutes apart and for that to be just chance is just bull.
I think cheating is just as low as you can get, this is not just about winning this is about geting better at what you love to do and to hopfully get some great crits doing it.
donīt know if iīm making any sens but donīt cheat.
Annatar
04-12-2006, 03:58 PM
Pehrson, that pre-supposes that his friends were all in their individual homes giving him encouragment all at the same time which IS a little bit ermmm.... bull.
However, they could all have been in one of their homes, at one PC etc etc - MoKhatib not being present etc.
There is no way we really can go so far as to call cheat. Unless there is definative proof....
Anywho, as Artecnl pointed out, the rules cancel these entries out so all they are, are encouragment.
Here's the rub:
Now if people start posting sh*t work that takes 2 minutes and starts voting (new users with 1 post etc) what then?!?!?!?!?
MoKhatib

Listen Pherson I have nothing to prove to you or any one else on the forum, I am participating in these challenges for the same reasons as everybody else here, I gave my apologies once for the mess some of my friends have made here and I wont give it again strictly to you.
If you were suggesting that I posted these votes, youre totally mistaking and if this suggestion proves anything it only prove a very limited and primitive way of thinking you have.
Think before you type.
