Please read the Instructions Guidelines and FAQ's (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754) for this challenge first.

Here we go with a new monthly challenge which is designed to be fun, creative and not too intensive whilst giving best entrants prizes and great exposure in 3DCreative Magazine (http://3dcreativemag.com).

This month is a really fantasic looking beast which goes under the name of 'Highland Cow'

http://www.3dtotal.com/images/toonanimal/highlandcow.jpg

This one is the very rare 'no legged' variety but we want yours to have legs too! So here's some more links to lots of reference images to get you started.

http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&q=highland+cow
http://www.istockphoto.com/file_search.php?action=file&text=%22highland+cow%22&filetypeID=
http://www.sxc.hu/browse.phtml?f=search&txt=highland+cow&w=1

Dont start new threads, lets try this with 1 main thread only, so all design sketches, WIP's, feedback, final renders to go in this thread only, but! questions to go in this one (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754)

Have fun!

ClassicGamer - Well if it's a big sucess and people dont mind giving us the 'making of' articles if they win, then we should be able to boost the prizes even further.
Captain_PoPo - great start

Hehe..I'm not exactly new it's just unfortunatly I dont get much time to participate in the forums anymore. Still it's good to be back and running a competition again like I used too a few years ago.

Hope it turns out to be a good 'un :)

I think I'm gonna throw my hat in the ring on this one! Gotta love a cow that looks like it should be in the Ramones!

Anyhow here is my preliminary sketch for mine...Simply titled "The Highlander".

For some reason it's not letting me post my sketch so I will have to link to it.

Very amusing Steve, just what we are looking for, sorry about the image problem we are trying to fix that now.

Just to make sure everyone knows, these first two sketches are great but entries dont have to be 'humanified' its fine if it is just a stylized version of a highland cow too, as I said though we are off to a great start!

@Khalid: thats Warrior of the year, very nicely made
@Palantir: you made that so easy yet so charming design

I was inspired by a concept, dropped it, then came a competition xam, while giving the xam another concept striked, 'n here I'm with a childish MSPaint work on it, I think I'll go with this concept

Funny entryes there :) I like all humanoid cow made by you. Are very funny.
Fore the rules: How many entry is possible to post in? Sorry but i can't open the page with rules i don't know why.

Thanks :)

Tom-3DT
06-12-2006, 05:13 PM
The humaniod biped entries are cool and this is an open brief, but remember you have gotta make these in 3d and also keep in mind the guidelines say the following :

What is this challenge all about?
All you have to do is create a 3d render of this creature in a stylized/abstact/cartoon style whilst keeping your creature instantly recongnizable. We wanted to publish some content in 3DCreative Magazine on how to create stylized animals such as you see in the many feature films and cartoon galleries.

What are we looking for?
Funny and humourous entries which break the animal down to its most recognizable components, enphasize these in whichever ways you think best and render your stylized/abstact/cartoon masterpiece.

A lot of people seem to be adding extra components and making themed bipeds, but as I said anything goes but it is always better to submit a very polished simpler model than struggle to get something very complex completed.

Here's a great example, if the subject was 'rooser' this would make a great entry
http://www.3dtotal.com/home2/gallery/getgalleryitem.asp?id=2505

Hope this helps

Tom

Tom-3DT
06-12-2006, 05:24 PM
Hi Palantir, really great first entry! ...feel free to make as many designs, models and renders as you like but it's best if you just submit your favourite/best one only at the end to go into the voting.

This is fantastic, I´ve been having this strange idea of miniature highland cows as pets (you know, like mini pigs) stuck in my head for weeks. And suddenly, there´s a actual competition about stylized highland cows.
And the prizes are also really nice this time!

I got to try this.

Hello. Been lurking for a while...came across this, and ever since I've had little cows clomping through my brain. Try as I might to ignore the stampede and get other things done that I'm actually supposed to be doing (like unpacking the house).

Thankfully the scanner isn't hooked back up yet, so I only get to embarass myself with my rough headless body.

http://www.realmofsavage.com/projects/TDcon/tooncow_1.jpg

Am looking forward to this, as it gives me a very good excuse for my first attempt at something other than a quick preview render in Max.

As long as I don't have to rig it...one thing at a time. Or my head might explode.

hammering 3d : nice work with style.
Here are some updates. Different versions. Completely haired. And if not, with just a texture or some fur. Maybe 2 submissions...

Right, I've spent the past 3 hours working on rigging! 2 angles of a pose. It's a bit extreme. Currently it's making his body hair piece stretch to the point where it looks like a poncho! I'll get on with texturing and sorting out materials properly tomorrow hopefully.

I uh...well...I modeled myself into a virtual corner (literally). Serves me right for hiding the reference shots and forgetting to bring them back, but I like the way the body is. I'm just wondering if the head will still work on this slightly more upright cow? (I think I've been looking at this too long and I'm out of ideas)

Hi Realmling,
Your model is looking great so far. just have to be careful that it doesn't end up looking like horse ;)

Realmling
14-12-2006, 08:22 AM
I did get things adjusted and it now looks more cowish (not like you'll see it under all the hair, but yeah)...but saved out an extra copy of the above body, so someday I'll have to make my little cow a little horse friend.

Realmling cows are much more boxy and low to the ground. Their skins tends to sag a lot around joints. Take a look at these cow body’s and notice the hind end areas and how the hips and ischium protrude which give the body a boxy shape. Im not sure if ur were going for a semi realistic feel to the body.

Thanks Cartoonera =)

Trying for just the other side of realistic proportions/overall shape....I just went about 20 steps to far of that other side. It's a failing of mine. Sometimes I just end up going crazy and end up modeling something different from what it originally started out to be.

Think I'll smush and stretch the body a bit more and that should get me back on track (or at least closer to it). Just at a block on the head, which is good as I'm supposed to be studying for Chem final tomorrow.

Well I must agree with conkrys. That seems really really near from his sketch.

maya3d_vex
18-12-2006, 02:50 PM
ya i did take some of the same proportions from his sketch posted, then took it to a more stylized form. I had said in my posting of this that "then saw some of the stuff posted here". im not trying to take your idea or anything and if you like i can pull what i have done. just let me know. i didn't see anything developing beyond the sketch that you posted. again if you want me to take it down i will. i wasnt trying to submit this for the compitition aspect just for C&C.

ajcgi
18-12-2006, 02:59 PM
more stylized? You've removed the hair really :p If you're not submitting it for the competition, a better route would be ask for permission to use conkrys' sketch, then put it in another forum? It's fantastic work! It really is, just possibly gone about it the wrong way.

Conkrys
18-12-2006, 03:02 PM
maya3d_vex: It's different to see and get inspired by something and different to "get the same proportions". If you used the sketch as a backplate to build your character then that wouldn't be right. You see this is a competition not a workshop, but even in a workshop you would have at least asked for permission. I don't mind people using my work I mind when they don't ask. As far as the developing is concerned you do not know If I have been working on it in my private time or not. Because I am not posting it doesn't mean I am not working on it. The competition ends on the 31st and I still have time. My schedule has been packed and I haven't had enough progress to post. But since you are not participating in the competition I guess it's ok. But there is a WIP thread where you can post your work for C&C. Respectfully Constantine

Hello everyone... this it's gonna be my first time in participate in a challenger. So I promise that tonight I will load the images of the cow I been creating ( with pencil and paper... later it's gonna come the 3D ;P ).
Ok... now I begin... I though that the body looks pretty good. But the most important thing we don't see it... the head. So right now you are doing very good.

Just one thing more.... remember, the cow it's gonna look like a cartoon. Think in a easy animation. "How I gonna move this cow? (in 2D)". "It's gonna be easy to draw?". Then pass the desing in 3d.

ajcgi
21-12-2006, 05:18 PM
I totally agree with that. The best designs come from paper first, which Conkrys has drawn out pages ago in case you missed it :p
It's looking good so far and strangely familiar lol! Good luck with the head

Conkrys
21-12-2006, 05:42 PM
kal-el: thanks for the comments. I'm not sure it needs to be completely animatable. I definitely would have made it less detailed if that were the case. But you can take a look at my concept sketch in post #42.

ajcgi
22-12-2006, 02:59 PM
yeah a lot of the scenery was coming through green thanks to bouncing too much light around, but I sorted that out so now there's a bit more depth rather than just a green wash.

AbhishekKr: your idea is an excellent interpretation of the challenge.

Hi SithLord_Steve, If you have more than one entry then you have to choose wich one goes to judjment (voting) as your final entry, btw it is not recuired to repost it, just link to that or saying post number is enough, I think!
although it is unclear yet if we have to choose one entry or we can submite several entries, to voting?! see here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754&page=2) (Post #20)
