View Full Version : Threedy Speedy Animation Challenge, Comp #18 ---***(Spider Man)***---
09-12-2006, 08:04 PM
Alrighty then, this is a 3 weeker, I think. I want all of you to think of a motion that Spider Man would make. Ok, now animate it. This can be as simple as a flinging his web, crawling around on a wall, or hanging upside down. Use props if you need/want to. If you want, add music. Have fun with it. If you donít have a Spider Man character to animate, you might be able to find one on the net(let us know you didnít model it).
- The due date is December 31st, (three weeks from now) a Sunday 12 midnight (GMT). Voting will be on that following week. Post your final entries in the Final Entry Thread.
- Minimum animation: your animation needs to have one (1) motion, two, if your bored.
- Recommended screen resolution in 320x240 (you can do 640x480 if you want, but why would you).
- You can post W.I.P.s but you are only allowed one complete entry. That link is also final. You can and should post your wipís to get help.
- Websites where you post your finals is up to you.
- Remember, it's about animation, use your time for animation, not to get the best render possible, unless you can afford it.
- Use of plug-ins not allowed. Must be key framed (hand animated)
- Try to use QuickTime. It will allow everyone to view your hard work, plus it gives everyone the chance to go through your animation frame by frame to see how you did what you did
- You must post a render of some sort with your final entry post; also include a screen grab with key frames.
- Voting will be as follows -
- Vote on what best displays the motion -
First place (3) points
Second place (2) points
Third place (1) points

10-12-2006, 07:51 PM
ah man I wish this was posted after the low poly modeling contest.. don't think I'll be able to participate :P
11-12-2006, 07:31 PM
Alittle update :)
15-12-2006, 01:17 AM
Five days, three replies... :dunno:
But it's still over two weeks left, so I hope some other people will participate too ;)
This is my second animation challenge,
hopefully I'll have more time from now on :D
*update will come soon*
15-12-2006, 01:30 AM
yeah, the challenge's don't get much attention, which is why the guys on top don't bother with front page plugs.
If we are lucky, 5 or 6 will enter/finish.
Me on the other hand, I'm not too sure. With the low poly contest and then family comming in town for a week. That leaves me with the rest of this week and then the last week of December to get both done.
15-12-2006, 01:41 AM
Don't worry, I'm in for sure.
19-12-2006, 01:05 PM
Does it have to be an actual spiderman figure or just a guy in tights?
19-12-2006, 07:39 PM
it doesn't have to be a guy at all. It could be a naked lady. I just want to see a "spider man" movement.
20-12-2006, 06:44 PM
BiG ToE you're a genius (more so)!
You've finally discovered how we can draw more people to the animation challenges and get on the front page as well!
New rule: all characters you animate must be naked ladies!
21-12-2006, 06:26 AM
So many keyframes, so little time... :p
Iīd like to take part in this but Iīm already overloaded with work and other stuff.
21-12-2006, 07:50 AM
Lmao! That would be awesome.
On a different note, I think I'm going to have to sit this one out. A lot of my 3D/Maya time is currently devoted to a project I'm doing for school...I've got a good amount of prop modeling to do! I wanted to work on this one though, so maybe we'll do a similar style anim. comp in the future?
21-12-2006, 04:35 PM
NOOOOOOO!!! it's all my fault... just today I found this challenge. It's spectacular!!! (spiderman jeje!). But I don 't have time... really, the post it's excellent. Excuse me for no see it before :ugh:
But I will we waiting the animations ;P
23-12-2006, 12:09 AM
Can we use lowman or do we have to model a character?
23-12-2006, 12:13 AM
Can we use lowman or do we have to model a character?
yes, no.
23-12-2006, 12:17 AM
So i'll use lowaman for this competition and don't model a spiderman :haha:
23-12-2006, 03:32 AM
is there a lowagirl, she doesn't need cloths, she just needs to show up for the final entry.
23-12-2006, 08:56 PM
Done some small fixes :D
I am almost finish, does anyone have any suggestions for improvments?
24-12-2006, 02:21 AM
the second step of the run looks really stretched out, also, he has no hip movement. His hips should move up and down with the run and rotate from side to side as he steps. Last thing, his kness seem to pop abit as he climbs up the side of the wall, but,I like the way he bounces on the flip and after he lands on top of the building. Good job.
30-12-2006, 10:26 AM
Just got back from vacation (went snowboarding for the first time!). Not sure if I can whip out an animation in 2 days or not, but I guess we'll see.
30-12-2006, 06:39 PM
I hope someone can do something. Having one person hand something in, is no fun. No fun at all.
31-12-2006, 12:06 AM
Maybe you should put on two more weeks on this challenge.. :)
Mine is pretty much done, just need to playblast it into avi... or something..
I don't want to be the only one to participate
31-12-2006, 12:21 AM
that's a good idea, that way, I would be able to get something done for this too.
31-12-2006, 12:22 AM
Due January 8th, 12 midnight GMT
31-12-2006, 01:29 AM
Oh sweet. Thanks guys :D
31-12-2006, 08:31 AM
Cool, thanks. I've got something, but I can make it better in a week for sure.
04-01-2007, 12:05 PM
just noticed this. I will give this a try. Abit late but what the heck! lets see what can be done in 4 nights ;)
04-01-2007, 05:03 PM
you can do it, I know you can.
As for everyone else, I wont be making a final entry thread, because it looks like only a few people will be done in time. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to finish.
05-01-2007, 12:24 AM
thanks i'll finish in the time
05-01-2007, 12:29 AM
guess I should get started, but before I do, anyone remember what tied for first with the spiderman movement. If not, I can just go back, find the idea/poll thread and find out.
05-01-2007, 03:51 AM
Thanks Big-toe for the encouragement! (and why are you called big toe? um is it because you have big toes? hehe )
Yep I'll be able to finish the animation in time.
05-01-2007, 04:44 AM
I do things with my feet. Example, play playstation. I'm real pissed that all the new gaming machines have those motion sensors and stuff. Do you have any idea how hard it will be for me to play the wii bowling, with my feet. The xbox isn't helping either, with the big butt cointrollers. The toes cramp up in less than 5 minutes. Takes me forever to beat a game.
05-01-2007, 04:59 AM
haha good one!! you sure you're not a monkey? hmm ;)
aw i love those games with motion sensors! .. um yeah cos i don't really know how to use the control pads *sigh* i'm too much of a pc person myself.
well typing on the keyboard with your toes must be hard work, take it easy! :P
05-01-2007, 05:08 AM
Hey BT, I have an old DDR pad you can borrow for the XBox. I'm in an appartment again, so I can't use it. Just don't try any dragon punches with it.
Speaking of which... tied for first was: dance move.
Should give Martimus a nudge to get involved in this one.
The Spider-Man one is a good idea, but I think a lot of people are really busy this time of year. Maybe revisit it again some other time (or do "Super Hero movement" or something like that).
05-01-2007, 08:19 AM
Yes, I'm still using IK_Joe for this. :)
(Just wait until you see who the villain is!)
05-01-2007, 04:17 PM
Just some quick Test animation renders of what I whipped up last nite. I'm just using CS from Max:
Full Animation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14oXoI0pENk)
Front view of 'Landing' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPZBJXovBho)
Hmm i might scrap the first part and make him run out and leap instead of just stepping off the ledge.. well we'll see how much time there is.
Hey DerekSc, was just wondering, did you make that rig IK_joe?
05-01-2007, 06:27 PM
Nope, got him from rigging101.com. I believe full credits for IK Joe are as follows:
IK Joe v.3 by
Lluis Llobera, Javier Solsona, and Daniel Lara
Credit where credit is due. I just love using that rig, so I keep using it.
For the record, he can be put in IK or FK mode (I did a swing test using him in IK mode, and that didn't work so well, so the climbing will be IK, the swinging will be FK).
05-01-2007, 07:16 PM
hey.. I have a question
Can we work on a Flash Animation.. or it has to be 3D animation??
05-01-2007, 07:20 PM
2d animation, is more than welcome here.
06-01-2007, 03:00 AM
okay thanks, i might check out that rigging site later.
I will try to work more on my animation tonight and change a few things as well as add his spiderweb. Any suggestions or improvements on my animation??
06-01-2007, 03:34 AM
kuriouz: you animation is good from what I can see. It's the camera angles I would work on. You got all that nice animation but the camera is soooo far away you can't get a good look at it. I know the buildings are what he is swinging from, but like in the movies, you should zoom in and let the viewers imagination take care of the rest.
06-01-2007, 03:41 AM
Are we going to just post our final entries in here then?
Mine is done :)
06-01-2007, 03:53 AM
yeah, go ahead and post away.
06-01-2007, 03:55 AM
Here is my final animation, (from two different cameras..)
>>First Camera View<< (Click here) (http://www.elqx.com/sm/SAC/spider01.avi)
>>Second Camera View<< (Click here) (http://www.elqx.com/sm/SAC/spider02.avi)
06-01-2007, 09:00 AM
Thanks bigtoe, Yeah you're right i should work on my camera angles.. I've been told that apparently there's not enough 'bounce' in my landing .hmm..
so will fix that too..
:D anyway its all good. love animaton.
06-01-2007, 09:30 AM
kuriouz: when you finish and are ready to post, make sure you post screengrab with keyframes and some kind of render showing what is in the animation.
06-01-2007, 03:01 PM
sure, no worries
07-01-2007, 05:42 PM
Unfortunately I didn't get much time on the weekend to fix anything else.
Therefore this will have to do:
-> Final Animation Entry (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ZjxmdGFYkA)
-> screenshot of the workbench/graph editor in 3d max
There are a few things to fix, but that can be for another time :)
08-01-2007, 04:29 AM
Big toe, for the next comp, can we do something that deals with emotions and expressions?
08-01-2007, 04:36 AM
well, yes, and no. We kinda had a poll a few weeks ago to see what we would do next. Spiderman movement tied with dance move. So it's only fair that we do it next.
So, if you can animate a emotional dance move, you will do just fine.
08-01-2007, 04:53 AM
okay that sounds fun too. An emotional dance hm.. okay i might do - fat woman and a skinny man dancing.. or michael jackson (ha!)
08-01-2007, 05:30 PM
i like ur animation kuriouz
and i am not an animator myself
but when spiderman lands on the building top
it look weird than ur first trial
so hope all the best luck for animators
09-01-2007, 03:07 AM
Thanks gfxnoob for your comments. I'll have to agree with you there.
I believe i spent the 2nd night fixing camera angles than the animation itself!
I only had 2.5 nights to work on it :( *sniff*
Will do better in the next one :)
this sounds intresting....i had an idea..but busy with the low poly comp right now...count me in next time...(at least ill try to)....since i just learned how to bone/rig a character...pretty sucky when it comes to animating..tried it once and it sucked big time anywaaayyys.....next comp ill try :)
just realised....wasnt the due date 31 of december? :s
so that would be the comp after this next one. ill enter (A)
09-01-2007, 09:11 AM
Didn't get as much done as I'd like, but hey, that's Warcraft for you. Oops! I mean, er... busy at work! :)
Here is the movie:
And the keys:
Nice entries guys, looking forward to the next one!
I have a feeling that something like a dance move, which is open to a lot of artistic interpretation, will get some fun and maybe strange results...
09-01-2007, 09:19 AM
great job everyone, as for me, I blew it. No real reason, just layed around till I got sick.
Anyways, who is ready to dance.
09-01-2007, 09:48 AM
Yeah, I blew it too. I just laid around and let the homework/other Maya project I'm working on accumulate until I'm rushing at the semi-last-minute to get it done. :lame:
09-01-2007, 04:16 PM
good work everyone
and nice animation DerekSc
10-01-2007, 04:24 AM
10-01-2007, 05:28 AM
ok, ok, you dont have to be so mean. I'll get the next one up soon.
10-01-2007, 09:33 AM
A few comments:
Great job to both of my fellow animators in this one!
Arneoog: Nice hand spring, very Spidey-like. Good timing in general. Only part that needs a little tweaking is where he hits the wall after the hand spring. I think he needs to bend his knees more when he hits, maybe the body a bit more too, just seems a little wooden. Otherwise, loved it, great job.
Kurioz: Great little touch of bending the web as he's swinging, also very easy to tell by the movement that this is Spider-Man (great pose in the end), good landing and nice camera work, some nice little secondary animation in there as well.
For both you guys, it would be nice to have Quicktime versions of your animations. It makes it easier to step through and see the little things that I'm sure you worked on but go by too fast to see well.
GfxNoob, thanks for the compliment, hope to see you here soon!
Now someone go kick Martimus (not too hard, he kicks back) and tell him what the next competition is about (and watch his dancing robot animation if you haven't seen it yet, it's really great!).
10-01-2007, 08:21 PM
Cool, thanks, DerekSc!
I suck at commenting stuff, so I'll just say that both your entries were great! :haha:
And I mean it, they're awsome! ;)
Hope Martimus can come back soon too...
I want to beat him down with my super skills in dancing animation, Haha :p
