View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge 128 & 129 - The Grinch That Stole Christmas
Marty_McFly-3DT
14-12-2006, 01:39 AM
The rules are simple
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified.
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.
7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.
8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions
Time limit - 60 minutes (single model) 120 minutes (whole scene)
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 27th of December 2006
Subject - The Grinch That Stole Christmas
The Grinch That Stole Christmas: The idea here is to use your time very wisely to create either a complete scene or an individual model based on the book, cartoon, or live action movie The Grinch That Stole Christmas. Keep in mind that you may either model out a single model in 60 minutes, or a whole scene in 120 minutes. There will be two prizes one for best model, and one for best scene. A big Thanks goes out to SithLord_Steve for suggesting this challenge!
Have Fun and Good Luck!

Now this is a fantastic idea for the SMC!!! a delightful twist on the smc too, not only have we got a nice 2 weekly challenge again, but we have a choice or things.
I'm really really looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with for this fortnights SMC! :)
You can get a huge amount done with 120 mins for a scene, I think i'll try a scene first.
Oh well, off to research this then :)
Rashika - Very nice starter, that colour is wild!!! lol :) beautiful clean modelling as always and a great render.

can we make a character as an entry, and than spend another 60 minutes making the scene(with that same character) as another entry?
Rashika-3DT
14-12-2006, 02:34 AM
yeah, i did the model, although i think he pimped my rims :) he did the colors and the render. i was a lazy guy this time around. :) but thanks for the compliment!

Hmm i cant find any reference pictures on google... just Jim Carry's face...

14-12-2006, 03:16 AM
be careful with that google nonsense. marty is a yahoo man through and through. if you want to heckle him, just send him a few PM's with GOOGLE! in it. although i think if that were to happen, he might look a little harder at your entries :P

Indeed verry feew referances about this chalenge...and I did't read the book and did't see the cartoon I see the movie long time ago and can't remeber much details from object there ... but i find this nice site ... not so big size referance but is verry nice done :D
http://www.grinched.com/ ... go here and push ENTER SITE and then move that magnified glasss around city ... the magnified glass is in front of U :D is write on it CLICK&DRAG ...
ohh more than that :D ... if U move that magnified glas over one building it apear in the left of magnified glas the name of the building and U cood go inside it...and see some referance there ... for example in Cindy hose etc ... and if U enter in a hose then push in the left part on the link teater ... U cood see 3 trailers form Grinch movie so maybe more referances ...

nice competition suiting the celebration in air
thanks for the site hammering
'n ya yuriyxxx's question is still not answered, even I'd like to know that if we can use the Character modeled for CHARACTER section to another 60 min drawing the scene for SCENE section
Marty_McFly-3DT
14-12-2006, 09:13 AM
I'm not really sure what the question is.
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
And there is no "character" section of the challenge. It is either to model out an individual model, or a whole scene. As you saw in the starter, the individual model was a car... not a character. But you may not model out an individual model as an entry and then later use it in a scene.

thx Marty, your last line
But you may not model out an individual model as an entry and then later use it in a scene.

Well, to be honest, I don't like it as much. I saw Grinch a year ago, and I turned it off, because it's (in my opinion) louzy movie, which can't save even Jim Carrie. And two weeks? Oh, never mind.
I see, that I can't hide before X-mas anywhere:D Meeery Christmas guys and gals!
ClassicGamer-3DT
14-12-2006, 11:36 PM
I have to admit that The Grinch with Jim Carrey was pretty awful, but in contrast The Cat In The Hat with Mike Myers was excellent and very very funny, I think i'm going to try to research Dr Seuss themed things, if you've seen either film they contain the same kind of look, especially in archictural production sets and colourings.
I hope people will try and join in.

I'm sorry but I must agree with Phantom. As first i thing that this movie is not such great (in csfd (offshoot of IMDb) it has only 55% that means it is not good movie at all). Shortly, i don't like this movie, so this topic too... there could be so many better topics. Why don't you repeat free from the year (?)... imho it seem to be temporary topic (for me...)... i hope that fallowing topic will be better...

I agree with Popo...(not just because I suggested the topic either)...I think alot of people are just looking at the Jim Carrey version of the Grinch...I agree that movie version stinks. But there is a world of other stuff from the animated version and even the Dr. Suess storybook as well....Go to the library and take a peek...Otherwise if you don't like the topic, join in on a different week and quit being a Grinch on this one! haha. By the way...if you look on Rotten Tomatoes the original animated version is getting 100% rating...Not bad for a 40 year old show don't ya think?
Hey Madhouse and Classic Gamer , thanks for the comment.

I also agree... people should not just focus on the live action movie. There's the cartoon which has been around forever... and the book as well.

Thanks Steve, unfortunately the site will be down for an hour it seems because too many people are trying to access it, and you've exceeded your data transfer limit, give it an hour and i'm sure it'll be fine again :)
I have a first entry done by the way!!! :)
I've gone for a "Grinch themed" scene, hopefully it will tie into the scheme of things this fortnight :)
Currently compositing at the moment and then i'll post it up.

OK, well here is my 1st entry for this two week challenge, i'm dissapointed that i've not seen more entries by now, but I've found it incredibly difficult to find reference pictures, especially high resolution ones, but anyway, this was modelled from the grinch website, I took a look at it when the SMC was announced and i've tried to base this scene on something that resembles the world of Dr Seuss, or at least in the same style anyway. Everything that's in the wireframe was modelled within the timeframe mentioned in the composite, except the small 3 wheeler car, i modelled that separatly in a spare 1/2 and hour and added it for fun to add to the overal scene. That's why the car is not in the wireframe screencapture. Modelled entirely within Cinema 4D, i've even tried my hand at the Hair Module for this one, and I wanted to cpature that "just snowed" look, I hope it's ok. I'm pretty happy with it. The grinch text is actually the proper Grinch font from 1001 fonts, just type "Grinched" and you'll see the zip file.
Enjoy

ClassicGamer : ur fine work inspires to make a entry to SMC as always
Praveen3D : thats a fine entry where even the base mat complements the theme and season, & even the scene in another is very nicely assembled

yuriyxxx wicked entry! Very well crafted!
GJWEGNER! That is a cool model as well! It's really neat to see the cartoon versions of things come to life (or virtual life anyhow).
Hey R3D...well done...There aren't many models being posted, but at least the ones that are here are of really good quality! Like the fur effect too! Trying to figure out how to use the hair and fur plugin for Max at the moment so I can appreciate when something looks really good and a fur modifier is involved!
Anyhow, not sure if I'm going to pop back on here over the holidays, but to those who celebrate it....Merry Christmas!

hello pleasant,
I think the ring is calles christmas turd, or something like this. right guys???
donīt know it excactly. well i made it with a simple displacement map. no fur or such thing. but i used vray as renderer, which has a pretty powerful displacement map feature, as i figured out lately.
have a very merry christmas everybody.

The ring is called a Wreath. a christmas turd would be a much more colorful name, however. i think i might use it now :)

hmm.. 2 weeks and so little entryes.. the last time i entered was at about challenge 25 :) Has this thing really died?
