View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge 130 & 131 - Free Form the Year
Marty_McFly-3DT
28-12-2006, 01:37 AM
The rules are simple
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified.
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.
7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.
8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions
Time limit - 60 or 120 minutes, depending on the week of choice
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 10th of January 2007
Subject - Any subject from the challanges of 2006
You are allowed to go back to any of the competitions of this week and model an entry according to it's subject!
But be aware that the rules of that week shall ALSO apply to your entry. So read the concept of the weeks of your choice very thoroughly.
The competition is going to last two weeks. But your modeling time shall depend on what you decide to submit. If you go for a two hour concept... use the two hours fully.. the same goes with a one hour concept.
We are very aware that there have been many complicated weeks along with simpler ones and that these simpler ones may be more tempting for you.
But do note that the contestants that take on more challanging subjects shall be taken notice of.
One IMPORTANT rule for this week is that you are obligated to post the concept as well as your software and time used in modeling. Entries that disobey this may be removed prior to the deadline.
Please go back to this thread (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=37971) and check out the winners post to see how it was last conducted.
Have Fun and Good Luck!

OOOO I might take a stab at the bathroom scene one...I have a 3-day weekend from work - I really wanted to join that week but was too busy, good luck all.
p.s. I really have to say you guys have gotten fabulous over the years! Unfortunately I do less and less 3d - My career as a graphic designer doesn't give me much opportunity to do what my greatest passion is...

This topic is awesome, because I haven't practised 3d seriously for too long and I haven't been around here too long either. Now I have possibility to make some of the models from challenges I've missed :)

Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 29th of March 2006
Subject - Windmill
Windmill
There are different types of windmills that are made with different types of uses in mind, so we are definately expecting to see some great entries this week from everyone. Last week was a good one... let's keep it going!
modelling: 3dsmax, 60 min
textures and scene: 3dsmax, 40 min (+20 min for setting up hair & fur to make grass  )

Excellent stuff, I'm a graphic designer too, but my business lists me as a 3D Graphical artist, where I live even the most basic 3D impresses so i'm getting a fair amount of work lately, I've been creating book cover illustrations, 3D artworks and the like, but I have to agree I've been away from some serious heavy 3d modelling for some time, I'm keen to get into some modelling today and tommorow, and as I hate new years eve, it's a prefect chance to sit back, get comfy and model!!!
P.s. - I hate new years because I hate to think it's another year of things i've not done, but i'll certainly sip a pint or two tommorow night.

Happy New Year!
I didn't had the time to compete in the latest challanges :(
For different reasons(meanning job) i decided to cross over from Blender to Max and now here i am with my first post this year.
I choosed a competition i wasn't able to participate in although i wanted very much :Speed Modelling Challenge 92 - Evil Robot
Time limit - 90 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 5th of April 2006
Subject - Evil Robot (Part 1)
Evil Robot
Ok guys and gals, the goal here is to create an Evil Robot. The main thing to realize here is that we want "Original" ideas, and not copies of robots that already exist. This means that although you may draw inspiration from any source you wish, in the end the creation must be your own. (In other words, no exact clones or copies of C3PO, Bender, Johny #5, Sonny (NS-5), etc... etc...)
It's name is : SER(Shiny Evil Robot)
Modelling time : 90 min (mostly because modelled it without any idea on how it will look :o )
Software : 3d max 9.0

Yeah, happy new year to everybody!
Mesciurius - That's a cool looking robot! I like especially the legs!
And here is already my third entry from challenge #104 (Outdoor grill) :
Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 28th of June 2006
Subject - Outdoor Grill
Outdoor Grill: Well it's summer time now... (at least where I live anyway) So it's time for some more outdoor fun. An outdoor grill can have many different shapes and sizes and use many different types of fuel. Coal, gas, propane, wood, electricity... all of these can be used to cook our favorite BBQ foods from hot dogs and hamburgers, to pork ribs, chicken, and even shrimp. (Ewww.... shrimp. ) So let's get to cooking... I... I mean... let's get to modelling!
modeling - 3dsmax, 45 minutes
materials & scene setup - 25 minutes
rendering - vray, about 15 minutes
Entry here! (http://img236.imageshack.us/img236/4808/grillfinaluk0.jpg)

Just a heads up to a couple folks, read the rules carefully. It says you must include the brief from whatever week you are returning to...
EXAMPLE::
If you redo the bathroom week, this would need to be included in your entry:
Time limit - 120 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 13th of December 2006
Subject - Bathroom Scene
Bathroom Scene: The idea here is to use your time very wisely to create a complete bathroom scene. Try to include the types of things that you would normally see in an everyday household bathroom.

Modeling: Until the buzzer rang, I was laying wires in the back: 90 mins
Texturing: 35 mins
Lighting: 20 mins
Render: 7:24 mins x2
Software: 3dsm 9
I think it came out rather good, would have been nice if I moved the missile pods up and I added some lights in the cockpit so you could see the the wires. Yet oh well, this one I actually had a plan as to what I was going to do, so there were no moments where I would sit there thinking.
It will not let me upload an avatar.

Ok, this is the 4th model I've made since the "Devil Bobblehead" but the other 3 were either too simple for my liking, or I went over time like the 3rd one, mind you the 3rd one (A Bobblehead) was an organic model of Yoshi (Super Mario Bros), it actually come out very good...... But anyway back to this model.
I had to plan this out to be able to finish the majority in time. Didn't get the 2 clear blue tubes modelled i wanted:grr: but never mind. I've modelled the large threads but not the screw threads, they're too smaller detail to bother with in my opinion.
As you can see half of it was made with extruded splines, so I thought I'd show them instead of the resulting meshes.
Oh, and for anyone who's wondering; it's part of a water cooling system that sits on the CPU  :)
(Not sure if this is allowed or if it is classed as double entry/post, (Let me know if it's not allowed, Moderator) but here's Larger Renders (http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/2259/largeviewqq2.jpg))

You'll need to make sure that you have anti-aliasing checked, that's what gives your models a jagged edge, once this is enabled you're models will be smoothed around the edges and add to realism, you're entry is very nice, good clean modelling and nice texturing too, your lighting could be a little bit brighter, maybe look into using a GI solution with HDRI, and your bath mat appears to have a reflection too. But other than that, I really like your entry.
I've done a very very small and mini tutorial to show what I mean't, there's some other settings with Anti-Aliasing aswell such as min resolutions etc, but this should in most cases smooth your models out as default settings.

-R3D- & GfxNoob - Yep the attatchment AT THE MOMENT! are working exceptionally well, i've just spent the last hour re-uploading all of my old entries & previous weeks back into the attatchments system. They are all uploaded now. I suggest if the attatchments works for you, to sort all of you're entries out, sooner rather than later.
I hope to be back with some new entries soon.

So this fortnightly smc is to model any entry for 2006 using the limits of that particular challenge?
Hold up... Is the attachment system back up and running?? or was it just luck that yan's attachment worked? Moderator?
Yea this caught my eye too. I was perusing the Stylized Animal forum and noted some of their images were posted directly instead of a link, had to check in here to make sure.

The rules are simple
Time limit - 60 minutes (single model), or 120 minutes (whole scene)
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 1st of March 2006
Subject - Area-51 - Suggested by Nehumanuscrede
Area-51
Somewhat of an open-ended theme here since it doesn't officially exist according to the US Govt. Aliens, space craft, weather balloons or experimental really fast aircraft.
The time limit is split into two sections. 1 hour if you are going to build a single model. 2 hours if you are going to build a scene. This means that if you are just building a single model, you are to only use 60 minutes and make sure that your render only showcases that model. No other elements should be present in your submission. (This means no compositing "extra" scene elements for your finished work.) If you want to build a whole scene, then use the 2 hour time limit and use that time to make ALL of the elements in your submission. The prizes will be awarded for best 1 hour model and best 2 hour scene.
Have Fun and Good Luck!
Marty, Fastrak, and Andy
Well I decided to finally get round to modelling another entry, this time being from the Area 51 SMC, I never actually got to have a go at this one the first time round, so here I finally get a chance to give it a shot. It only took me 56 mins, but I did take my time, because as the SMC thread states 120 mins is allowed for a scene, but I didn't rush and partly textured as I modelled this scene. The spaceship in the background
took only about 20 mins to create, i'm afriad that I made the mesh editable at one point while in the hypernurbs, and as such the mesh looks subdivided, i'm sorry for that, hopefully it's not too bad! It is of course Thunderbird 3 in the background, but it's not the full model, it's only what you see lol :) the bottom jets on the sides are lofted splines also, so apologies if they look smoothed.
Spent a good 2 hours of texturing, i've also had a pretty good play with hdri and GI, i've only got one light and that's for the ship bay containing Thunderbird 3, the rest of the lights and shadows was calculated with GI and a little Ambient Occlucsion.
Anyway, if anything's wrong I'll gladly try to attempt to edit and re-submit, let me know mod's if it doesn't meet the requirements, i've still got the time left to edit :)
Enjoy

Here is my second entry
Time limit - 90 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 12th of April 2006
Subject - Hero Robot (Part 2)
Hero Robot
Ok guys and gals, the goal here is to create the Hero Robot. (Think of some like the enemy of an evil robot. :)) Just like last week, we want "Original" ideas and not copies of robots that already exist. This means that although you may draw inspiration from any source you wish, in the end the creation must be your own.
This guy here was modelled in Max 9.0 .
Although is mostly made from primitives (sphere ,torus, oil tank, hoose )
and a few edit poly modifiers(head, foot, hand) it still managed to take me the entire 90 min :dunno: (and still i didn't get the hands right :wall: :wall: ).
The muscles are made from a hose with a bend modifier on it and cloned several times.
model time: 90 min
Software : 3d MAx studio 9.0
Materials and rendering: 45 min

And now some comments :
-cotolay-post #4 -simple and nice
--R3D- - post #7 - clean modelling and funny character .very nice the composition
-Eetwartti - post #11- the model seems good but looses alot from the materials (look who is talking :dunno: ) ,maybe would have been better to use something more colorfull
- Classic Gamer - post #14 - an exceptional entry
-Eetwartti - post #20 and #23 - nice clean models . but the light settings are too dark (or maybe is because the materials reflect the black enviroment)
-Scrtcwlvl -post #26 -cool
-artecnl -post #32 - AWESOME :drool::drool::drool:(i whish i could texture like that :wall: :wall: )
--R3D- - post #33 -simple + clean + nice =
-Shw - post # 38 - i like the idea :)
-cotolay-post #40 - nice
- Scrtcwlvl -post #44 - i like the evil one better
- GfxNoob - post # 46 - good modelling . you have a lot of unused space in your picture
- yan -post # 52 - i like it
- Classic Gamer - post #58 - simple and clean , but very very nice

Mesciurius - Post #22 - Really really cool model, loved it, it reminds me of the film alien with the head, but also a touch of ED 209 from the film Robocop, excellent detailing and lovely simplistic modelling, I would have preferred to have seen a bit more texturing with this little guy but it's still excellent.
Post #59 - Wow, now that's a cool bot! beautifully simple really with the primitives being used, and yet your imaginitive use of the deformers particularly with the muscles set it apart from the average type of model, with this model you've really gone to town with the texturing and it shows, it looks alot better than entry #01 especially texturing wise! :) I totally understand your concerns about the hands too, although you've not actually got anything wrong with the hands them selves, I think it's because they are a little on the small side, other than that it's an excellent entry, and great to see the attatchments back too.
I promise to have a go at some more entries very soon, i've already modelled about another 3 entries but i've not had the time to render them out yet, I will asap. I will also try to comment properly on all participants aswell.
Until then

Subject - Legos Revisited
Ok everyone, it's time to go back to the basics. Most of us have "modeled" with Legos at some point in our life... and here's your chance to "model" with them again. Yes, we have had a Lego challenge once before back in week 27... and it served to be a very popular challenge. Although this may not be what people were expecting for the 100th challenge here at Threedy... I hope you guys and gals have tons of fun with it.
This challenge is split into 2 parts, in the first section you need to model yourself a "lego set", once it's complete post it on the forum with a wireframe render as well as a solid, for this you are allowed 60 minutes modelling time.
The second section is where you get to build a lego model using ONLY the parts you created in the first hour. You may not model any additional parts or modify any already built components. When you post your final model, you do not have to post a wireframe.
I couldn't resist doing another Lego model. Here are the parts:

Subject - Telephone Booth
Telephone Booth: Well this can be taken a few different ways. Basically what's being looked for is a public telephone that you would find out in the street. Although the word booth suggests a closed environment, other non-closed phones will also be allowed. Yes, I'm also aware that a phone booth does not have to be outdoors, so indoor phone booths like those found in a theater or else where will also be allowed. Oh... and yes you must model out the phone as well. :D Although I shouldn't have to say this, I'll say it anyway... just in case. No cellphones... or mobile phones of any kind.
Oh... and an extra 10 points to the person who models the "S" man getting changed in a booth for his new movie! ;) (Just kidding... it should really be worth an extra 50 points, but like Who's Line is it Anyway... the points don't matter. :shy: )
Have Fun and Good Luck!
Marty
OK so i've had a go at the Telephone SMC, i've really enjoyed this one, I couldn't make the phone itself so I just concentrated on booth itself. I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out aswell, a personal triumph was getting the top curvature correct because it's a spherical and square aswell.
Hope it's ok.
More to come from me

DarthSjaak - Please observe the following rules as you have broken them:
The rules are simple
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
and:
One IMPORTANT rule for this week is that you are obligated to post the concept as well as your software and time used in modeling. Entries that disobey this may be removed prior to the deadline.
If you look above this post, below yours, you will see Classicgamer posted following the second rule I quoted correctly.

SMC 100 & 101 was a two part modeling contest. First part was modeling Lego Parts (including a wire frame), second part was assembling the set (no wire frame needed). So I think in this case I'm allowed to post two images.
You were right about posting the concept, thank you for the heads up. I've updated the posts.

Been finalising my other entries, i've actually tried some character modelling, I totally suck at character modelling, but i've been going for a more Cartoon character shall we say, with 3 fingers rather than 4 type of modelling, i'm currently going through the texturing setups i've got 4 entries that need UV mapping, but i'm no good at UV mapping, i've modelled a bobble head of Marvel's Spider-man ultimate alter ego & nemesis Venom, but texturing is a little hard, I hope to have all my entries finished sometime today before this SMC runs out.
Keep the entries coming guys!

OK as mentioned earlier today I have got 2 more entries before the SMC finishes today, it's unlikely i'll enter again before the next SMC, but I won't rule it out lol.
This is Venom from the Marvel Universe, i'm reasonably happy with this one, apart from the building of the body, this turned out to be the 7th try at a character body, the head was simple and took about 5 mins then I added the teeth with primitive cones and the toungue with a spline sweep then made it editable and played with the shape etc. The problem I have personally is that I tried to make the body muscular, and over do the musclur form that exists in the real world, hence the comic book style, now as you can see the mesh unsmoothed looks pretty bad, it intersects quite a few times particulalry on the arms and the legs, but as I say once it's under a hypernurbs object and the mesh is smoothed i'm fairly happy with it.

Again the same topic for my last entry, with what i've learn't with the previous Venom modelling, I started from scratch and came up with the "Just Go For It" solution, and modelled what I thought a cartoon character should have looked like in the venom entry, the venom modelled started off well but i'd really made it rubbish try to add huge muscles like that, luckily I suppose mesh smoothing helped out there, but with this one I tried to make it as close to how i'd like to see it before adding the mesh smooth, and so this is the result! This is a fantastic character too, He's called Bananaman created by DC Thomson & Co in Dundee in 1984, he appeared in the UK comic The Dandy and was also seen in and out of another called Weezer & Beezer, ocaasionally making an appearance in The Beano aswell, all of above were created by the same publishing house. In 1985 Bananaman got his own cartoon series, it ran for 3 seasons until 1987 and had the excellent voice talents of Graeme Garden, Bill Oddie & Tim-Brooke-Taylor all of which are famous in the UK for a comedy series called The Goodies back in the 70's, it was due to their zany antics on there own show, that the were first to be considered for the voices, and they gladly accepted, and so the rest is as they say history.
So this is my bobble head homage to the small boy Eric who leads an exciting double life, for when Eric eats and banana, an amazing transformation occurs! Eric is Bananaman, ever alert for the call to action! :)
I'm proud of this one too, not only because i've finally managed to make a descent character, but i've managed to make the costume aswell. Apologies about the drawn mouth, it was last minute and I wanted to get it submitted.
It did occur to me only this afternoon though, how much i'm in debt to this website and it's community, when I first came on to here and participated in these challenges, I could barely model a lantern within an hour, i'd have never ever attempted a character model! But i've learn't so so much since then and continue to learn everyday. the beauty of this entry and the last is labour saving tools such as the symmetry object and spline deformations etc. without them i'm not sure I could have finished to a quality I'd like to post.
Righto i'll shut up now lol
Kind Regards

ClassicGamer - I'm loving your entries! The telephone booth is perfect. The setting in which you put it works out great as well. I like the Venom bobblehead as well. The way you've made it a little cartoony really makes it convincing as a bobblehead. The only part of it that's a little strange is the jaw. Venom has a big jaw, but it looks like he was a horrible underbite here :D Other than that, I love it. Nice work!
DarthSjaak - The lego model looks flawless, I can't think of anything that you can really improve. The only thing is that the images on the three squares surrounding the droid look a little blurry. Sweet stuff though :)
