Please read the Instructions Guidelines and FAQ's (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754) for this challenge first.
Here we go with this months challenge which is designed to be fun, creative and not too intensive whilst giving best entrants prizes and great exposure in 3DCreative Magazine. The Schedules have slightly change but all of that is covered in the Guidelines and FAQ's (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754).
This month we have gone underwater (we have been watching a lot of Blue Planet recently...) 'Octopus' of the Cephalopod Family.... Octopus's only though please ;-)
http://www.3dcreativemag.com/challenge_resources/02_jan07_octopus/main_small.jpg
Here are a selection of Images from eyes to tentacles to give you some good references. The octopus is quite a commonly stylised creature so there will be a lot of thought needed for this one. Keep up the good work!
Octopus 1 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/2062426_octopus.php?id=2062426) Octopus 2 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/210840_caribbean_octopus.php?id=210840) Octopus 3 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/2585237_eight_armed_friend.php?id=2585237) Octopus 04 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/where/scenics/underwater_scenics/403566_day_octopus.php?id=403566) Octopus 5 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/2585237_eight_armed_friend.php?id=2585237) Octopus 6 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/life/nature/animals/418807_jetting_octopus.php?id=418807) Octopus 7 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/what/life/nature/384457_octopus.php?id=384457) Octopus 8 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/ethnic_foods/asian_food/japanese_food/1370684_octopus.php?id=1370684) Octopus 9 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/food_and_beverages/food/cooking/1978945_octopus.php?id=1978945) Octopus 10 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/where/scenics/underwater_scenics/1078998_octopus_eye.php?id=1078998) Octopus 11 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/1292904_octopus_tentacle.php?id=1292904)
Dont start new threads, lets try this with 1 main thread only, so all design sketches, WIP's, feedback to go in this thread only, but! questions to go in this one Guidelines and FAQ's (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754)
Final Renders go in the Final renders thread which will be created later in the month ready for Voting.
Have fun!

Haha, copyright on that idea till this is over ;P hehe

texture would be gr8 thought for this model coz they are of lot kind of different textures
oh man, i love underwater creatures. i really think that somewhere in ocean there must be a HUGE octopus in the bermuda triangle that really sucks those ships under.
since i recently got mudbox, ill most likely be giving this one a go!

I've worked on my squid model all day (till now, 7 hours) :)
It's the last day of my holyday...
But, here is a little taste of my octopus image ;)
I got all that glow beacause it's under water :p

nice start arneogg! a suggestion maybe: have some squids squeezing out the ink kind of like theyre running a backside business with their enemies!

I personally like the idea. Stylised does really men 'cartoony' as cartoon characters are generally 'larger than life' charicatures.

Hope to have a concept going here soon, just have to mull over what's floating around the little grey cells. :D

Hey! Realmling! She is an octopus in night dress! lol :D Really awesome idea! But I don’t want to see him even in a nightmarish! :D although really want to see him captured 3D on this thread! ;) Good luck btw :D
capitan_popo - I like your bold ideas man, nice touch to use tow of hands as mustache really! lol n that tow horns! Really awesome! I know it will be one of best this month :D
arneoog - Hey man! nice concept! n really good render :D you are so fast man! you finish it before start?! :D although it will be a nice illustration work if you work on env as well as octopus, good ;) good luck btw dude :D
hammering - thanks to sending your work to me ;) it’s really good as a sketch cause it is just you that need it, to model your character; so there is no need to make it realistic or sth aesthetic else if you’re satisfied by it :D so when sketching for a 3d model or a concept for your use just think to its function that you want to :) Good luck btw buddy ;) I like your funny idea so :D

Um, well I lied. But now I have a problem and I don't know how to fix it...
http://www.realmofsavage.com/projects/TDcon/krake/argh.jpg
When I spliced the legs on, I missed deleting an errant poly...and I didn't notice it till mapping the tentacle in question...and now I have no idea how to get rid of it and not screw up all the work I've done already. Attempting to remove it destroyed the mapping, so that's out. And I've tried saving and loading the uv's and I must be doing something wrong because they never load again for me. (and yes, not knowing enough makes me chicken...spent all day on this to lose everything to some damn errant poly)
Figure I can export her and bring her back in...but is there any other way to fix this in Max?
Conkrys
14-01-2007, 10:52 AM
Realmling: Maybe you should carry on mapping and when you've finished it, throw an edit poly over the stack and delete the rogue poly then. The rest of the model will already have the uv coordinates so it won't effect it...however you may need to get into that small region and mess around with the vertices in the Unwrap to fix any minor distortions.... try it out
Realmling
14-01-2007, 11:05 AM
Thank Conkrys. :) Will have to remember that for next time (there will be one, I always mess something up). Just went ahead and did a quick export/import, removed it and finished mapping. Now for textures and finishing the rest of the scene.

Looking good Gideon. Like the peg leg.
Anrkee - seems a little off to me that his body has a bit of sheen to it, but his eyes don't. Might help breath a little more life into the octopus. If they're near the surface, perhaps some faint rays of light filtering down here and there might add to the underwater feel.

Early texture run. Color scheme is based off an octopus photo I found online...but not sure if I like the 3 color or 4 color better (other than the grey...it stays relatively as is). Need some more splochies I think...

21-01-2007, 01:34 PM
al3x the ideea is great, with the concert and stuff, but i think it should be a combination between the last 2,a mean it should be a little more dark.About the model itself,i think it doesn't have any expression on his face,he's too dull, and there should be more squids in the audiece.
10x guis
virus
when the firework go off it is more light in the scene ..and the concert is kinda at the end if the fireworks gone off so the squid "dog" shout up and that's why the mouth shout ,and the crouwd ..i said it has no point in making one ,,if u look at the first pic theres some guards and in the sec pic theres a close up of the squid
Here's another render but I forgot to make it at frame 30 so the fireworks didng gone off
so im making another one
kinda final ..comments anyone ? what to change or what to add ? i'M all ears

al3x - He's looking really cool, but I'd say maybe tweek at least one side of the mouth into a slight smile/smirk/grin...just to show a bit more expression on the great face you've done. If it's the end and the crowd is going crazy, (unless it's an angry mob) he should look a little pleased with himself for putting on a great show. :)

Gideon - Maybe just a little bit of bump to the shiny guy in the second image up there and I think you have a winner.
Anrkee - maybe have a scattering batch of fish trying to get out of the way...just little guys with big scared eyes popping out of their heads before they get run over?

Hi everybody. I'm totally new to the Threedy forums. And quite happy to start here with this challenge: very nice and inspiring work everywhere :)
Here's my little samurai octopus:
http://mimura.free.fr/cg/poulpe_test02.jpg
I'm still in the middle of modeling it (yes, I'm pretty late): some tweaking left, the kimono is 0% done, and there should be a rock of some sort under the octopus. Hopefully, everything will be ready for some texturing and lighting tomorrow. Any comment is welcome. Thank you :)

Excellent O malley. I specially like the inside of the mouth and the tapering of the "cylinder" making the tentacles.
Gideon : looks like your picture will be with many details. I prefer the octopus outside the boat, more symbolic.
http://www.slibe.com/fullimage/cb83be41-.jpg (http://www.slibe.com)
I like this one better and tri to put it in a charge or salute stand ..like its sinking with the boats
-those are delphins ?
-and put some barrels and woods in he water floating ..
-and make the poll of the "birds nest" of the ship coes its obvious now that the nest is not tied to anithing ...

omalley - u'r image is so funny and have so much character in it so i must say something
What I not like:
-the gums color is to violet I not liek it, and the gums modeling i not like, are so many waves ther is liek he keep in mouth some violet juice ...
-the material on the body is looking more like plastic, I think it need some bumps or don't know, because the character is so nice modeling like organic, that is so bad to make it plastic.
What I like:
-I like alot the gradient colors, specialy on the bottom part of tentacles
-I lliek the modeling is so nice and clean
-I love the tentacles, are grate modeled
-I love the inside of the mouth
-I like alot the expresion and the pose is so funyyyyyyyyyy :D and how he keep the sword :D
And now a stupid ideea like I allways have, I think if U put on him the glases that U have on the Avatar Guy the forum will die laughing :D, and keep them biig like in avatar :D...just an ideea ;P

Hammering > Hi! I think you're totally right about the gums color and modeling. Thank you for pointing that out. @ omalley : your texturing is going gr8, 'n yup I also agree to hammering3d's comment

omaley > Cool design man!!. It's great the "octopus samurai". I like the hair (great detail).
I think Hammering it's right... maybe the body is too much plastic. I'm not great in materials, so I can not help you, but maybe if you try to down the reflection light of the caracther... but I repeat: I am not very good in materials :ugh:
GiDeOn > the pirats it's going very good. Every time you post and image, you make it better and better.
The image's color it's good. Have you try putting something in the horizont... like a ship, or land, or an island... but really really far, and just very hard to define what it is. I think that will give to the image, more deep... and mistery ;P but just an idea.

omalley Great character, think to lower the "plastic look" can give it some translucency, or fake sss, or real sss depending on waht render engine u are using, a bump map might help a little but not much if u want to keep it really cartoonish,
hammering3D
25-01-2007, 06:30 PM
omalley yes yes, capitan_popo is right, the shyne of the material is ok, but to make it look like octopus skin u shood make it translucent, I think bumb will not help...

Some comments on the other works :
o malley : like your colors. Don't think it's too plastic but I'm waiting for the environment
TheCheshireCat (even it's not for the challenge) : cool work and specially the pose of the tentacles. In term of texture I find it a little too shiny / gold.
Gideon : your image progress. I think the color of the octopus is too near from those of the wood.
Artecnl : great work. Many details. Just to crit a little I think the lips are a litlle to big but it's a question of taste ;)
praveen3d : I hope you'll finish your concept anyway. Even out of the challenge. I was very curious of what it could looks like textured and lit.

Still have to finish the cape & crab...but decided to get the scene elements ready to go today. Probably have to bring up the lighting just a tad, but will see when I get the girl in the shot.

Hai Everyone,
Really Nice Entries Everyone:)
Here's my final Entry, looks a bit harsh though:)
I likes to model everything detailed, being the deadline today, I was struggling with my Max scene :xyz: for the last 7 continuous hours, the materials, lights, particles, texturing, env. fx, modeling-the pearl diver, harpoon, torch etc (except the octopus) all was done yesterday. :hurt:
Comments & Crits. r welcome

/tears her hair out
I thought my render was nice and done...I didn't have a chance to look at it last night before crashing....and I have no idea what I went and did. The only difference between this render and the one I posted of the whole thing earlier was I brought up the light level just a tad....and now I have these funky things going on.
I didn't change my render settings or anything...just brought the lights up...and aside from these wierd spots...I like how everything turned out...(and I hate having to fix things like this in post work...just cause I really don't like post work in the first place)
