02-01-2007, 08:20 PM
Please read the Instructions Guidelines and FAQ's (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754) for this challenge first.
Here we go with this months challenge which is designed to be fun, creative and not too intensive whilst giving best entrants prizes and great exposure in 3DCreative Magazine. The Schedules have slightly change but all of that is covered in the Guidelines and FAQ's (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754).
This month we have gone underwater (we have been watching a lot of Blue Planet recently...) 'Octopus' of the Cephalopod Family.... Octopus's only though please ;-)
Here are a selection of Images from eyes to tentacles to give you some good references. The octopus is quite a commonly stylised creature so there will be a lot of thought needed for this one. Keep up the good work!
Octopus 1 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/2062426_octopus.php?id=2062426) Octopus 2 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/210840_caribbean_octopus.php?id=210840) Octopus 3 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/2585237_eight_armed_friend.php?id=2585237) Octopus 04 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/where/scenics/underwater_scenics/403566_day_octopus.php?id=403566) Octopus 5 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/2585237_eight_armed_friend.php?id=2585237) Octopus 6 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/life/nature/animals/418807_jetting_octopus.php?id=418807) Octopus 7 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/what/life/nature/384457_octopus.php?id=384457) Octopus 8 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/ethnic_foods/asian_food/japanese_food/1370684_octopus.php?id=1370684) Octopus 9 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/food_and_beverages/food/cooking/1978945_octopus.php?id=1978945) Octopus 10 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/where/scenics/underwater_scenics/1078998_octopus_eye.php?id=1078998) Octopus 11 (http://www.istockphoto.com/file_closeup/animals/marine_life/octopus/1292904_octopus_tentacle.php?id=1292904)
Dont start new threads, lets try this with 1 main thread only, so all design sketches, WIP's, feedback to go in this thread only, but! questions to go in this one Guidelines and FAQ's (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754)
Final Renders go in the Final renders thread which will be created later in the month ready for Voting.

cool this one should be very interesting and fun! I'm really liking these challenges!
02-01-2007, 08:47 PM
awesome animal for this month, can b done in a ton of different forms
02-01-2007, 10:43 PM
Ohh...this one should be fun. :)
02-01-2007, 10:48 PM
really nice ::D lets work :)
03-01-2007, 12:43 AM
This sounds cool :p
I might actually make an entry :haha:
I did some sketching and I'm quite happy with the result.
Sorry for the horrible quality, but the scanner is dead..
Anyway, I'm going with this Ink selling octopus on a coralreef idea :)
Haha, copyright on that idea till this is over ;P hehe
I'll keep making my final concept sketch now....
EDIT: conceptDrawing (photoshop)
03-01-2007, 08:49 AM
sounds like a good one.. hopefully i'll have some time for this. good luck to everybody!
03-01-2007, 09:19 AM
texture would be gr8 thought for this model coz they are of lot kind of different textures
oh man, i love underwater creatures. i really think that somewhere in ocean there must be a HUGE octopus in the bermuda triangle that really sucks those ships under.
since i recently got mudbox, ill most likely be giving this one a go!
03-01-2007, 01:15 PM
Great subject. I'm in.
03-01-2007, 01:23 PM
Wow! good response so far and even half an entry! that was quick. If these keep getting more popular we migt have to up the prizes ;-)
Looking forward to these!
03-01-2007, 07:41 PM
I've worked on my squid model all day (till now, 7 hours) :)
It's the last day of my holyday...
But, here is a little taste of my octopus image ;)
I got all that glow beacause it's under water :p
I hope all of you other guys will start "wip-ing" soon, I want to see more octopuses :D
*going back to my squid work*
03-01-2007, 07:48 PM
The bottle of ink is a cute touch..
03-01-2007, 08:38 PM
I say it fits
nice start arneogg! a suggestion maybe: have some squids squeezing out the ink kind of like theyre running a backside business with their enemies!
03-01-2007, 09:13 PM
I personally like the idea. Stylised does really men 'cartoony' as cartoon characters are generally 'larger than life' charicatures.
03-01-2007, 09:17 PM
Hehe, thanks sarN! :p
Look at my concept sketch (here (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showpost.php?p=524471&postcount=6)), I'm going to make that :haha:
...oh, yan, that's an awsome concept! (and sketch) :D
03-01-2007, 09:20 PM
here is my concept sketch for this months contest, will see what scene I put him in later.
03-01-2007, 09:37 PM
Great concept guys,
arneogg- really nice, like ben says, i really like the ink detail :D keep the good work
Yan- really fun image, i can imagine it now 100 times better on 3d, nice work
Capitan popo- Really nice concept, gran trabajo :)
here is my first concept, its an old paint i did for the painting challenge, time ago.
04-01-2007, 12:53 AM
My concept
Yeap I can't draw :o ...usualy just open max and model there ... but just to show my ideea :o ...
04-01-2007, 01:44 AM
arneoog - verry nice skech, I wish to draw like that, and nice modeling and like the glow ;P
yan - this I call funny :D :D :D OMG what nice expresions ... man i have 1000 scenarios in the head with that litle fish and that angry octopus :))
capitan_popo - going again to humanoid ? ... i bet it will be verry verry nice same like in the cow comp ...
artecnl - huge octopus :D...I liek it...can't wait to see the 3d version
04-01-2007, 01:46 AM
man I hope I get some time to do this challenge. Just started school again... But I really liked how the last challenge played out. looks like fun. nice concepts guys!
04-01-2007, 04:07 AM
Thankfully I have my chosen octopus.....too bad the other cool cephalopod I found (Vampyroteuthis infernalis) isn't one..not a squid either (and I need to stop being so technical minded now that I'm not at work).
Hope to have a concept going here soon, just have to mull over what's floating around the little grey cells. :D
04-01-2007, 07:03 AM
Hey Guys :)
Awesome concepts really loving the idea's so far.
I been reading these forums for a while and have decided to stop being lazy and actually do some 3d so hopefully get motivated and make an entry :)
Count me in ... should be fun. Should also have my new machine up and running in a day or two which will help.
04-01-2007, 12:58 PM
I'm liking the enthusiasm! WyRd_ralphie : Glad to see that we might have some motivational skills too ;-)
Cant wait to see them all in 3D!!
04-01-2007, 02:47 PM
04-01-2007, 05:55 PM
Awesome concept yan! I hope it gives out all the character and emotion in 3d... it will be great!
05-01-2007, 04:40 AM
looks like a good start yan, :)
is it me or can 3ds max 6 not export .obj files? i need something to open in mudbox!
edit: found a freeware plugin to import / export .obj files with max 6. woo!
05-01-2007, 06:33 PM
here is my idea for this challenge..
05-01-2007, 09:28 PM
a sketch from me too...done in few minutes so not a fancy things but...BTW yan your sketch is awesome...hope to see it in 3d soon..
05-01-2007, 09:54 PM
Liking everyone's ideas so far. :)
I'm torn between two right now...and am stuck at the comp with no scanner so will be a bit before everyone gets back so I can post mine.
05-01-2007, 11:55 PM
Hey, ive done my concept, its not that good, as it will be the first project that i use my new drawing tablet that i got for christmas this year.
The idea is that octopus are very good drinks due to the amount of alcohol the can "hold" :lame: :smug:
06-01-2007, 03:48 AM
Im going to be participating in this one ^_^. havent posted for a while.
anyways im doing a musician octopus, Keyboard player to be exact. Based of Rick wakeman from YES since hes known for playing on two different keyboards at once i reckoned an octopus would fit in well :)
i have a concept done, but cant put it up due too lack of scanner. ill take a photo tommorow though
06-01-2007, 05:40 AM
I think I'm gonna join this one. I'm thinking making him look like an old wise man with the tentacles mimicing his beard, holding a pipe or something.
06-01-2007, 07:22 AM
Here she is.
Hey! Realmling! She is an octopus in night dress! lol :D Really awesome idea! But I don’t want to see him even in a nightmarish! :D although really want to see him captured 3D on this thread! ;) Good luck btw :D
capitan_popo - I like your bold ideas man, nice touch to use tow of hands as mustache really! lol n that tow horns! Really awesome! I know it will be one of best this month :D
arneoog - Hey man! nice concept! n really good render :D you are so fast man! you finish it before start?! :D although it will be a nice illustration work if you work on env as well as octopus, good ;) good luck btw dude :D
hammering - thanks to sending your work to me ;) it’s really good as a sketch cause it is just you that need it, to model your character; so there is no need to make it realistic or sth aesthetic else if you’re satisfied by it :D so when sketching for a 3d model or a concept for your use just think to its function that you want to :) Good luck btw buddy ;) I like your funny idea so :D
06-01-2007, 11:22 AM
Hehe...idea #2 involved Davey Jones' Toy Locker....but I kept going back to my naughty lady :D
Just hoping I have better luck getting her UVs done than I did with my cow. The texture for her is already in my head and I've only just started on the backdrop..
see this one (http://critics.sundayherald.com/downloads/harryhorse/Fifteen-large.jpg) judt I found! :D
06-01-2007, 02:24 PM
Funny concepts, I'll hope to post mine soon.
You're really fast yan.
06-01-2007, 07:12 PM
my first sketch concept. but I may change during 3d work for best result.
07-01-2007, 06:54 AM
I started modelling immediately as this January thread opened.
My whole concept is that this octopus want to be like the rest with big heads, but since he doesn't have one he make one, he makes one.
I hope it counts since it only has four tentacles. :o
Now I need to rig and set-up abit.
07-01-2007, 10:19 AM
how do you use insert picture?
how do you use insert picture?
if you want show your picture here you can use free hosting image servers n then get a direct link to it n put link of image between these tags you see bellow:
link to jpg
also you can use a better way that seems worked by now again ( ) that is attaching images directly on threedy server, by clicking "Manage Attachments" button on aditional options of advanced reply options :smug: with tnx to threedy to resolve databse probblems
07-01-2007, 10:52 PM
awsom, i love that Yan!
08-01-2007, 01:27 AM
Here's mine , mr octopus 's late for work.
08-01-2007, 03:52 AM
yan - your octopus has real character, i love the expression with the eyes warning the fishy to stay back or else, works really with the scene too
authentic - making a promosing start on your model too, moustache is funny :)
i hope to be able to finish an entry this time round, gotta come up with a concept firstly though.
08-01-2007, 06:42 AM
some really nice concepts so far and some nice 3d starts :)
I going to be doing a pirate octopus standing on a crows nest with a sword an eyepatch and a pirate bandana :P
Have concept half done will post it up in the next few days if i can find a scanner
08-01-2007, 05:25 PM
Adroit, I know I haven't posted anything on this yet, but I'm doing a chef octopus, too! I've already started so I hope this isn't a problem, I think we can just do the same thing, but let me know if you have a problem with it. I can change it because I'm not that far into the modelling (just working on the tentacles right now) and in all fairness, you did post first. Hope this will work out...
09-01-2007, 12:09 PM
I'm a bit busy this month onward, so just made a quick image of my Concept, i think I'll be following this concept, a bit change in posture or so may be seen,
soon I'll start it in 3D  :dunno:
09-01-2007, 03:53 PM
was sitting and having dinner and i sketched this up then psed it quickly and thought it could work, is it along the right lines? i would like to know if its ok for this challenge
Meet Octopuss ... PPUURRRRRR
09-01-2007, 07:13 PM
this is the concept of my cartoon octopus. It´s just an idea once that drawing is not my main skill as all of you can see..hehehe... so that is just a start point The 3d model will have much more detail in both model and texture...I don´t know yet if I gonna do a 3d background...lets see how it goes...
I hope to get started on 3d as soon as possible...
ps.:yeah, yeah, yeah...my english sucks...
nice concepts so fur from all!
yan- keep it up man, you can be first one that finish her work this mounth! ;)
authentic- hey I like your idea, is so funny! he remind me mr.mario! lol maybe better if you put a hat instead of haires! :dunno: goodluck btw ;)
*** *** ***
I come up with my killer idea asap also! kill! :wall: kill :wall: bill :dunno:!
CHEERS! , mim :haha:
09-01-2007, 08:07 PM
Hey Mim. Just to say that was a hat I drew (ok very fastly) in photoshop. thanks for your comment
10-01-2007, 04:52 AM
i hope someone does squidward. :D
10-01-2007, 05:21 AM
As cool as that would be...there would really be no point to someone doing a Squidward...The idea would definitly not be original and he is a squid...not an octopus. haha
authentic lol I gues it first but Dubiety, nice idea btw ;)
first time I was wanted to model one actopus on sphongi bob toons, but next I changed my mind! :dunno: cause of originality! :smug:
so in these posts you can see some of several ideas; I have some others also but I miss-left them on office! so I go here with just these :smug: :D
I send them in three posts to viewed without efforts  , I like myself first one to model! that military one! but glad to hear your opinion aswell :smug:
atlast note that I draw some of them in taxi! :dunno: n some really speedy so please excuse me for crapy sketches ;P
cheeeeers, mim
11-01-2007, 02:18 PM
I prefer the one looking at the hook.
11-01-2007, 05:47 PM
MIM great sketches! if I weere u, would also go witht eh military one
11-01-2007, 06:39 PM
Hard to choose mim. Like the soldier one, but I really like the face on the one with the umbrella too.
11-01-2007, 07:54 PM
I agree with Yan...Military on has so much potential....Only thing I would change on it would be the mustache....looks a bit Hitleresque....
11-01-2007, 07:55 PM
mim - I say to model them all, then chose one :D
11-01-2007, 08:14 PM
hi MIm, :D the militar one is greatˇ
11-01-2007, 08:15 PM
Replace the soldier's mustache with the grumpy face....I think that's the winning pose. ;)
12-01-2007, 12:19 AM
Haven't started on the octopus yet...wanting to do better on my lighting this time so playing with that this afternoon. Not quite there yet on the red light in the cave bit, but getting closer I think.
Then to figure out how to get a neon sign above the door.... :hmm:
12-01-2007, 02:48 AM
Will have to give this one a miss unfortunately... :( *sniff*
Currently concentrating on the animating one.
Alot of great concepts & entries so far. Yan, Authentic, love your models. Reamling, hope to see the octopus modelled soon ;)
Hope to see more 3d models coming out! :D
12-01-2007, 04:38 AM
Here's the head so far.
Hi all ;)
thnx for all of your comments :) so I'll choose first one to make, :smug:
by now I'm searching for bluprint of weapons :dunno:
it is hard to find a good blueprint btw for any of them :( if anyone know where I can find some, please put it here :) that is a great help ;)
tnx in advance, mim
13-01-2007, 11:12 AM
hi guys, here is my second concept, a 3d worker octopus, he can do a lot of things at the sam etime, view references, draw sketches, create textures, and modelling, all at same time, :D i hope you like it :)
I like her workplace man! :smug: are he a modeller too?! :D I havn't any chances if he wonna participate also! :haha:
goodluck btw, mim
13-01-2007, 11:39 AM
hehe, LOL yess, he he try to do everything, :D , good luck to you too mim :)
13-01-2007, 06:02 PM
this is my first entry... my underwater skills aren't what they used to be so be gentle
13-01-2007, 06:03 PM
great concept artencl
heres a little progress on mine :
13-01-2007, 08:39 PM
Update on my naughty girl:
13-01-2007, 10:12 PM
Took a break from tentacles to finish the eyes.
14-01-2007, 12:34 AM
realming and authentic, both ur models are looking pretty cool
14-01-2007, 12:39 AM
authentic, i really imagine that model texturized, great one,
capitan_popo- i hope to see your concept in 3d soon, :D i really enjoy the last one
realming, nice model, nice eyelashes :) keep the good work
arnkee- nice, but maybe you need to work in the post production :D
see ya guys. enjoy the dayˇ
14-01-2007, 01:31 AM
artecnlgracias vos igual estan bien los tuyos, cual vas a hacer al fin?, the modeling of mine is done, but need to texture everything first
14-01-2007, 02:54 AM
Thanks for the comments guys :) So far I like her lashes the best. (but that might be because I really won't have to map them...)
Will help keep my spirits up as I get her unwrapped....might take me the rest of the month just to get it done.
Think it's time for a break, can't feel my hand anymore. But now that I have the hang of things, I'm actually liking the unwrap mod now. :D
14-01-2007, 04:22 AM
Really honestly the last from me today....now I'm dragging myself away kicking & screaming. (whoever thought adjusting UVs could end up being fun... :P )
14-01-2007, 07:24 AM
Um, well I lied. But now I have a problem and I don't know how to fix it...
When I spliced the legs on, I missed deleting an errant poly...and I didn't notice it till mapping the tentacle in question...and now I have no idea how to get rid of it and not screw up all the work I've done already. Attempting to remove it destroyed the mapping, so that's out. And I've tried saving and loading the uv's and I must be doing something wrong because they never load again for me. (and yes, not knowing enough makes me chicken...spent all day on this to lose everything to some damn errant poly)
Figure I can export her and bring her back in...but is there any other way to fix this in Max?
14-01-2007, 10:52 AM
Realmling: Maybe you should carry on mapping and when you've finished it, throw an edit poly over the stack and delete the rogue poly then. The rest of the model will already have the uv coordinates so it won't effect it...however you may need to get into that small region and mess around with the vertices in the Unwrap to fix any minor distortions.... try it out
14-01-2007, 11:05 AM
Thank Conkrys. :) Will have to remember that for next time (there will be one, I always mess something up). Just went ahead and did a quick export/import, removed it and finished mapping. Now for textures and finishing the rest of the scene.
anrkee- nice idea! ;), artecnl is right may you work on post for underwater fx :dunno:
authentic- good step, I like this octopus! ;)
Realmling- good progress, I agree with conkrys :)
I have a truble with time n also with blueprints for weapons :(, hope post a wip soon :dunno:
14-01-2007, 11:57 AM
thanks for the tips guys... lets just call that first one a WIP then... i can do better than that... i'll post a new one soon. for some reason i forgot that this wasn't the speed modelling section (n00b)
14-01-2007, 03:30 PM
this one's a little better.. more detail and a little bit of PS... i still can't get the whole underwater thing down though... any suggestions?
use some blob n light fx for start! ;)
14-01-2007, 06:52 PM
my octopus:) i was a little busy :) some final exams at school:)
14-01-2007, 07:26 PM
Looking good Gideon. Like the peg leg.
Anrkee - seems a little off to me that his body has a bit of sheen to it, but his eyes don't. Might help breath a little more life into the octopus. If they're near the surface, perhaps some faint rays of light filtering down here and there might add to the underwater feel.
14-01-2007, 07:41 PM
arknee- much better, :D maybe some gradient for the sea, from lighter to dark, and caustics sounds good too , keeo the good work :)
Guideon, thats some nice mdelling, a lot of detail, :) nice work.
for MIM :D here i found some link for weapons blueprints, i hope it helps you
14-01-2007, 08:25 PM
thx but i think that i will remove that bump is to ugly I will try to make it funny:) must smile:)
14-01-2007, 09:22 PM
Early texture run. Color scheme is based off an octopus photo I found online...but not sure if I like the 3 color or 4 color better (other than the grey...it stays relatively as is). Need some more splochies I think...
artecnl, tnx buddy ;) I can't find any 3 sided blueprints sofar also :dunno: tnx for your help man :) I have just to imagine other sides! :smug:, tnx again ;)
GiDeOn<3d>, good start, I agree, make it smile :) or lought even! :D ;)
Realmling, I like 4 color one, more ;) n a suggestion: why you don't roundup the edge of symmetry on your model? I think it seems better that way :dunno:, just thought! ;), I mean this part:
14-01-2007, 10:54 PM
Part of it was my "wonderful" light set up, but she's fixed now. :D
Started on the cape.
15-01-2007, 07:52 AM
nice dress Realming :D
here is some advances from today in the scene
15-01-2007, 08:40 AM
this one looks much better... worked on my caustics... added some volume to the main light and took out the ugly ugly grass on the ocean floor... thinking about some bubbles somewhere and maybe a fish with a "holy crap" look on its face... we'll see
Heeeey! artecnl, I can imagin ur final image from now, it's awsome man! :D nice dude ;)
15-01-2007, 07:00 PM
:D thanks a lot my friend :), in first place i was thinking in cartoon style objets, but i decide to do more life like, :D i hope i have spare time to complete my image,
see yaˇ :D
anrkee- thats better :) nice one, one last comment, try to do darker the inside of the eater :) , keep the good work :)
15-01-2007, 08:22 PM
Anrkee - just thought of something else. If the attacker is a shark, maybe another couple rows of teeth showing on the inside of the mouth?
And thanks for the other info. Will hopefully be able to put it to good use. :)
15-01-2007, 11:04 PM
I will make some details to that coat:) I have a lot of work but many exams:( i will try to finish:) I want to put the octopus in an rescue boat, leaving the island where it find the treasure
15-01-2007, 11:30 PM
excellent progress gideon
16-01-2007, 12:01 AM
thx :) I will make some chages to his face:)
WOW i must say im very impressed with all of these! seems that people are most creative when they have a simple idea and for some reason it seems the modeling is much better than i remember on these forums too! maybe its just cus ive been very lazy..
but great work everyone, anrkee i love your guys facial expression, RIGHT out of a cartoon!
16-01-2007, 01:30 AM
Made some accessories, reduce the eyes and many tweaks. The tentacles are not merge with the mesh for the moment. Now it's time for textures I think.
16-01-2007, 02:26 PM
would any body tell how much time left for this . so that i can also start for it .
16-01-2007, 02:33 PM
The challenge finishes on the last day of the month. New challenge starts the day after.
16-01-2007, 02:40 PM
17-01-2007, 07:53 PM
:D thaths much better authentic : really nice
here is my final character sketch :D i´ll try to do a nice textures in zbrush for him
i hope you like him
18-01-2007, 02:16 AM
 my wip ... after this concept
I post it some days back ... I change the tricyclet a bit :D ...
Hey! really nice progress hammering ;) it looks so funny so far :D
artecnl! I like ur active octopus character for sure ;) I like the lighting n color harmony on you way; btw is he a 3D guy?!!! :D
18-01-2007, 07:14 PM
hehe, thanks mim, :) i hope its nice when i model him, :D and he is a 3d guy :D
i only will change the t-shirtt color, or maybe i dont put a t shirt on him.
hammering. nice tricycle :Dˇ
18-01-2007, 08:15 PM
mim - tnx, i'll try to make him even more funny :D
artecnl - :D tnx, now is finish so I cood go and deeal with the octopus :lame: , afterall he is the main character :)
18-01-2007, 09:07 PM
it will be nice to si him finished :D , im gonna start moelling mine too :D
18-01-2007, 10:08 PM
long time no here on forum:)
Here's mine :) a rapper squid ..allso called squid dog or squid double o g :D
19-01-2007, 02:22 PM
so i started working on a new idea for this... it's basically an octopus "cowboy" riding a "bull shark".... here's the shark and the start of the octopus
19-01-2007, 06:29 PM
Nice models anrkee :D i like a lot the shark
19-01-2007, 10:22 PM
anrkee those models look great, the cowboy guy seems to have alot of expression
the squid o double G is taking shape :) need some bling bling on those tentacles included a gold channel cap
20-01-2007, 04:43 PM
here's where i'm at so far... i enjoy this one a lot more. i'm gonna add some details now.. bubbles... maybe a gun or two for the octopus... other stuff. so far everything is 3dsmax
here's my underwater scene ..I have fishes and bubles to add and some lighting correction offcourse
I think this version its much better
21-01-2007, 11:15 AM
alx3 very nice composition. well done
21-01-2007, 11:39 AM
realy nice al3x :D
21-01-2007, 01:34 PM
al3x the ideea is great, with the concert and stuff, but i think it should be a combination between the last 2,a mean it should be a little more dark.About the model itself,i think it doesn't have any expression on his face,he's too dull, and there should be more squids in the audiece.
when the firework go off it is more light in the scene ..and the concert is kinda at the end if the fireworks gone off so the squid "dog" shout up and that's why the mouth shout ,and the crouwd ..i said it has no point in making one ,,if u look at the first pic theres some guards and in the sec pic theres a close up of the squid
Here's another render but I forgot to make it at frame 30 so the fireworks didng gone off
so im making another one
kinda final ..comments anyone ? what to change or what to add ? i'M all ears
21-01-2007, 05:45 PM
21-01-2007, 05:48 PM
here is the scetch i am modelling from. (made it myself; i'm a noob :P)
and definetly some more bubles ^_^
21-01-2007, 08:33 PM
al3x - He's looking really cool, but I'd say maybe tweek at least one side of the mouth into a slight smile/smirk/grin...just to show a bit more expression on the great face you've done. If it's the end and the crowd is going crazy, (unless it's an angry mob) he should look a little pleased with himself for putting on a great show. :)
Gideon - I'm loving the pirate more and more. Can't wait to see him all done. :D
21-01-2007, 10:08 PM
Nice progress everyone. very different and original way to see the challenge.
Here's something to show like the final modeling. I start color but nothing yet to show.
21-01-2007, 11:18 PM
Cape is finished....now to just figure out a texture and get the crab uv done. Then finalize the rest of the scene and I should be good to go. (I hope)
22-01-2007, 12:01 AM
Gideon - I'm loving the pirate more and more.>> thx Realmling:)
but i have a little problem with octopus's texture:) is not so nice i must make another...now i try to lelrn organic modellig ,texturing...
22-01-2007, 05:37 AM
al3x- you should change the tv screen in the background to be a different angle than the one you rendered. it'll give you another chance to show off your model. good modelling by the way
gideon- i love the model, but the only thing is that i don't know what he's standing on... it looks like most of his tenacles are holding something, but nothing is holing him up. but other than that its a great scene i like the lighting
22-01-2007, 05:48 AM
added some guns and bubbles. not sure what else to put in it. any ideas?
22-01-2007, 11:27 AM
here is my scene pretty much done. Now for adding details
al3x- you should change the tv screen in the background to be a different angle than the one you rendered. it'll give you another chance to show off your model. good modelling by the way
yep ill do that to .
And for ur scene some ideeas:
-u can make like a australian ranch with fences
-or a rodeo show
-or a cow boy chasing ..u know put a star on its chest and make it the sherif
-or like a bank ,,,a robery ,,old west and the squid is running and shooting in the air
-or a pach of shark cows :)) driven by the cowboy
hope u find someting usefull here
and a diferent vew camera
22-01-2007, 07:01 PM
really nice caustics arnkee :) really great works guys,
al3x. nice concept :)
Gideon, nice sea, :D i hope to se e it finished
i´ll post my final entry soon... :D
22-01-2007, 07:08 PM
new texture to octopus:)
23-01-2007, 03:37 AM
So far this is what I got, its pretty EH! :hmm: compare to the other entries. I was pretty busy with school and plus the virus I got in my computer didn't help either.
Any comments and critiques are welcome to make it better.
23-01-2007, 03:46 AM
Al3x - much more life to his face now. Love it. :)
Gideon - Maybe just a little bit of bump to the shiny guy in the second image up there and I think you have a winner.
Anrkee - maybe have a scattering batch of fish trying to get out of the way...just little guys with big scared eyes popping out of their heads before they get run over?
23-01-2007, 08:04 AM
nice progress every1
I'm not sure if I'd finish my model this turn, pretty busy ...eh., till now only worked once on it.
Think I'll have to give it a SPEED Stylized Challenge this month for me.
23-01-2007, 12:31 PM
Nice concepts & great works everyone:),
I'm only started & only a few days left :), here's my WIP. The Octopus is almost done, but I'm not very sure abt the final composition & the elements. Still h've to plan the scene
23-01-2007, 01:18 PM
Have to say, the standard for this comp is rising nicely. Some real nice concepts this time round.
23-01-2007, 08:23 PM

24-01-2007, 02:05 AM
Hi everybody. I'm totally new to the Threedy forums. And quite happy to start here with this challenge: very nice and inspiring work everywhere :)
Here's my little samurai octopus:
I'm still in the middle of modeling it (yes, I'm pretty late): some tweaking left, the kimono is 0% done, and there should be a rock of some sort under the octopus. Hopefully, everything will be ready for some texturing and lighting tomorrow. Any comment is welcome. Thank you :)
24-01-2007, 02:12 AM
Excellent O malley. I specially like the inside of the mouth and the tapering of the "cylinder" making the tentacles.
Gideon : looks like your picture will be with many details. I prefer the octopus outside the boat, more symbolic.
I like this one better and tri to put it in a charge or salute stand ..like its sinking with the boats
-those are delphins ?
-and put some barrels and woods in he water floating ..
-and make the poll of the "birds nest" of the ship coes its obvious now that the nest is not tied to anithing ...
24-01-2007, 03:11 AM
gideon some tentancles are very fat dude you must work on that and it will be nice, sorry i didnt saw the page 11 it looks nice
24-01-2007, 03:26 PM
Hello everyone... here is some of my draws. I hope you like it.
Later i will upload the finally models, I will use. It's my first time in a concurse. And I 'm running out of time for the 3d Model... but I hope I can do it.
In the meantime... you can enjoy with this jeje!! :o
24-01-2007, 10:33 PM
25-01-2007, 02:43 AM
Hi everybody. Still have to model the rock on which the octopus stands, but started texturing anyway:
Not sure the colors are that great. Any comment is welcome :)
25-01-2007, 02:52 AM
Gideon > your image is a bit dark on my screen, but maybe that's just my settings. Anyway, I think your octopus deserve to pop a little more. Other than that, funny image, like it :)
kal-el > cool designs. I really like the little tentacles. Good luck :)
Authentic > thanks. When will you show us your textured octopus? :D
25-01-2007, 03:09 AM
omalley - u'r image is so funny and have so much character in it so i must say something
What I not like:
-the gums color is to violet I not liek it, and the gums modeling i not like, are so many waves ther is liek he keep in mouth some violet juice ...
-the material on the body is looking more like plastic, I think it need some bumps or don't know, because the character is so nice modeling like organic, that is so bad to make it plastic.
What I like:
-I like alot the gradient colors, specialy on the bottom part of tentacles
-I lliek the modeling is so nice and clean
-I love the tentacles, are grate modeled
-I love the inside of the mouth
-I like alot the expresion and the pose is so funyyyyyyyyyy :D and how he keep the sword :D
And now a stupid ideea like I allways have, I think if U put on him the glases that U have on the Avatar Guy the forum will die laughing :D, and keep them biig like in avatar :D...just an ideea ;P
25-01-2007, 03:10 AM
omalley - I think the skin coloration you've got going on is great.
25-01-2007, 03:22 AM
Hammering > Hi! I think you're totally right about the gums color and modeling. Thank you for pointing that out. About the material being too plastic... well, I'll try to add some bump but I'd like to keep the octopus as cartoony as possible. But I'll try. As for the glasses, we'll see. If I have some time, why not... Anyway, thanks a lot for the comments and the nice words; very appreciated :)
Realmling > Hi! Thanks a lot. Glad you like it :)
25-01-2007, 05:18 AM
@ omalley : your texturing is going gr8, 'n yup I also agree to hammering3d's comment
@ gideon : I too think ur image is dark BUT that well suits the ambience required for that time, "a stormy dark evening when Pirate is fighting"
25-01-2007, 09:11 AM
25-01-2007, 03:16 PM
omaley > Cool design man!!. It's great the "octopus samurai". I like the hair (great detail).
I think Hammering it's right... maybe the body is too much plastic. I'm not great in materials, so I can not help you, but maybe if you try to down the reflection light of the caracther... but I repeat: I am not very good in materials :ugh:
GiDeOn > the pirats it's going very good. Every time you post and image, you make it better and better.
The image's color it's good. Have you try putting something in the horizont... like a ship, or land, or an island... but really really far, and just very hard to define what it is. I think that will give to the image, more deep... and mistery ;P but just an idea.
25-01-2007, 04:06 PM
thx all:) donno why all said that my picture is a bit dark for that scene is good that ilumination but i will make another and try to increase the light:) I have a problem with my settings and I some have problems with light :)
25-01-2007, 06:04 PM
Some Cool werks so far
Omalley > Your skin shader looks great :)
Gideon3d > Great concept, I'think u should add a bit more light :)
25-01-2007, 06:06 PM
omalley Great character, think to lower the "plastic look" can give it some translucency, or fake sss, or real sss depending on waht render engine u are using, a bump map might help a little but not much if u want to keep it really cartoonish,
25-01-2007, 06:30 PM
omalley yes yes, capitan_popo is right, the shyne of the material is ok, but to make it look like octopus skin u shood make it translucent, I think bumb will not help...
and what abut the glasses ? U will put on ? maybe just a test render ? :D ...
25-01-2007, 07:55 PM
There are some great works posted here, these challenges are great.
Heres something I modeled several months ago, related to the challenge's subject if not to the challenge itself.
25-01-2007, 11:54 PM
26-01-2007, 12:25 AM
Hey all, I just knocked this concept up. It's a racing unicyclist.
I'll keep it in my book of things to do (right after I've bought said book ;)) as I don't personally have the time to make it for this challenge, but I'd love to see someone else make it! If you feel like making my concept, go ahead! :>
Good luck to all who have wips here so far. They're looking great!
26-01-2007, 10:36 AM
Hi guys, great entries so far :D, i just finish my image today, i post here some of the steps. is done in about 10 days, like 40 hours or more i think :dunno: i hope you like it :D
26-01-2007, 10:39 AM

done in lightwave 3d and photoshop about 40-50 hours the final render was 2600 x 1300 px, about 8 hours both passes, ( environment and character)
i hope all like it

:D really thanks dude, :) i hope to see your entry soon too, i saw the previews and looks great
26-01-2007, 11:13 AM
I wanted to post my final image but I need your advice between 2 versions. One has got more volume light on right and the octopusmove slowly. The 2nd has less light but I hade a blur on the particle to give a movment.
Which one do you prefer.
Sorry for maybe big image but it was need to show these details.
26-01-2007, 11:22 AM
:D i really like the B the sense of movement, because its the conceot of the image, i think , the hurry :D really great textures Authentic :D
26-01-2007, 11:37 AM
:D really thanks dude, :) i hope to see your entry soon too, i saw the previews and looks great
Hi, I think I'm not gonna finish this time, bcoz I'm busy on "The Lost World Challenge" at 3dm3.com, also I hve to prepare the highlandcow tutorial, all before Jan 30.
Thanx & GudLuck to all:)
26-01-2007, 12:25 PM
Some comments on the other works :
o malley : like your colors. Don't think it's too plastic but I'm waiting for the environment
TheCheshireCat (even it's not for the challenge) : cool work and specially the pose of the tentacles. In term of texture I find it a little too shiny / gold.
Gideon : your image progress. I think the color of the octopus is too near from those of the wood.
Artecnl : great work. Many details. Just to crit a little I think the lips are a litlle to big but it's a question of taste ;)
praveen3d : I hope you'll finish your concept anyway. Even out of the challenge. I was very curious of what it could looks like textured and lit.
26-01-2007, 02:35 PM
Hey thanks for your compliment :)
Its an old work though, not expecting it to be on par with the rest of the works here.
26-01-2007, 02:55 PM
Here is one of my octopus. He don't have the materials... and the light it's made very quickly just to see the model right.
The critics are welcome. ;P
26-01-2007, 03:17 PM
@ artecnl : by now I feel your work is going the top way, too good assembled
@ authentic : wat a depiction of concept, ur work is inspiring too
I hope try again to finish my concept in time, didn't worked on it after I started it.
26-01-2007, 03:55 PM
artecnl, that's one sweet scene. I shall set that to my desktop if you don't mind? ;) Just so many neat observations!
authentic: a mix of A&B would be good, with sharper particles imo
26-01-2007, 09:50 PM
Almost done modeling the main character and accesories ;P, now I see if I'll make an enviroment or not ... then colors
26-01-2007, 10:48 PM

Really Nice Entries Everyone:)
Here's my final Entry, looks a bit harsh though:)
I likes to model everything detailed, being the deadline today, I was struggling with my Max scene :xyz: for the last 7 continuous hours, the materials, lights, particles, texturing, env. fx, modeling-the pearl diver, harpoon, torch etc (except the octopus) all was done yesterday. :hurt:
Comments & Crits. r welcome

anreoog - Perhaps go with what you have right now? Think the image looks great as it is...we'll never know what all is missing unless you tell us. ;)
31-01-2007, 09:11 PM
Okay, I'll do a 800x600 render now :)
The things I wanted to do was to create lots of colorfull creatures in there..
Oh well... :lame:
31-01-2007, 10:21 PM
arneoog - sweet, is good to have something than nothing, may the energy power be with U, the windows stability :D, and 3d software error free

arneoog - You can always add to the scene after the comp is over to fill out the vision you had. He looks great either way. ;)
hammering - love his tounge sticking out. :)
01-02-2007, 03:55 AM
Tnx Realmling he concentrate to do his wheelie :D
01-02-2007, 04:01 AM
/tears her hair out
I thought my render was nice and done...I didn't have a chance to look at it last night before crashing....and I have no idea what I went and did. The only difference between this render and the one I posted of the whole thing earlier was I brought up the light level just a tad....and now I have these funky things going on.
I didn't change my render settings or anything...just brought the lights up...and aside from these wierd spots...I like how everything turned out...(and I hate having to fix things like this in post work...just cause I really don't like post work in the first place)
01-02-2007, 06:09 AM
plz. I asked a Question, if any1 knowing answer has li'il time
[do we need 800x600 for entry or 1024x768 is OK]
'coz instead I entered last time, but I'm still not sured
01-02-2007, 12:10 PM
intereessant entries everyone.
HAmmering 3d : that's pretty much better without environnement. it was a little messy
AbhishekKr : great idea
arneoog : glad you post your picture finally.
