hello there everyone.... hope everybody is good.
Speed painting challenge no. 59 is here. starts today and ends on the 29th of January, 2007.
:*poly: Topic: Portrait.
female or male, its upto u. u can paint your self-portrait or anybody else...:).
whats important is to have all the proportions and anatomy correct. and it would be great if u manage to put some personality/character in there too. again, it has to be in a speedpainting manner, but with realistic/correct anatomy and proportions.
not a fantasy, exaggerated one. and no figure. just a Face/Head...from front.
it would be a great learning experience, that would be very helpful for everyone.
u can even go ahead and add some sort of drama as well, with lighting and all. thats upto u...:).
start painting and posting. voting starts after the 29th of jan.
Imp: only those who take part by submitting their entry/work are allowed to vote, other votes wont be counted. this is a permanent rule, that stays, even if not mentioned in the start of the challenge.
each person can submit upto 3 artworks and please do remember to mention your final, votable entry.
Rules: http://forums.3dtotal.com/s...ead.php?t=24525
all the best....
so nice waheed, although it's hard for me start a realistic portrait cause I don't did that before other than in my own style that isn't realistic infact! but I'll participate for sure ;)
Goodluck to all, mim :D

hello GDA, nice one. a slight perspective issue with the eyes/her right eye. and her right eyeball would appear a bit smaller than her left one (which is closer to us).
have fun and stay around...:).

Aunt Georgina made the best hash brownies ever. I wonder where she went off to...
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o256/jim_grib/portrate-1a.jpg
uh, lots of hours (not sure how many as I was doing other stuff and would stop at the tablet and scribble in additions as I passed.) tablet + photoshop
btw. she is fictional, no aunt of mine ever made me hash brownies. :lame:

Nice entries guy n gals so far ;)
Bu I think we have to post a real photograph also! So everyone can see n judge on vote time ;) also everyone can paint a portrait of others as well! :D
, mim
waheed nasir
18-01-2007, 04:42 PM
there is no need to post real/actual photographs, we are not looking for resemblance, your work must be correct in regard to proportions and anatomy (in gerenal) and rules like perspective and othe eliments of art.
so just an artwork would be enough, but if someone wants to post the photograph as well...go ahead. your choice...not a necessity...:).
all the best.

However very nice paintings around here. And I loved the topic. Maybe tomorrow I'll be posting my painting.
Jim#1000: your first is too dark but its a nice one. Your 2nd pting is much better and is realistic ;)
kuriouz: you need more colors and shadows but the anatomy and facial expression are very good
artecnl: one more nice painting of yours ;). It is really very good.
HA-Jassar: the anatomy is good(I just see some problems at eye/brows positions) and a bit more light-shadow work could make it better
vinslikewhoa: your first one has very realistic anatomy and the second has an interesting painting style. nice ones
J0hn: your painting is very nice but the eyes are too big O.O :)

Nice entries so far!!! :)
Well... This is (kind of) me 5/6 yrs old, sketched on paper (half an hour).
I'm sketching on paper 'cause my tablet (Graphire 2) is pretty small and I can't be accurate.
It's pretty big 'cause I scanned it on 300dpi.
Have fun, I'll paint it tomorrow. Bye. :)

hi there. I'm a noob at digital painting and this is the result I got, Photoshop CS2, mouse( XD), 5 hours(I dont like it :D, I think it needs more contrast and much more):
http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y121/xissburg/speedpaint59.jpg
I want constructive comments that can help me improve the quality of my painting :) but, any comment is appreciated. thanks
Jim#1000
25-01-2007, 01:06 PM
xissburg, I really dig your eyebrows and stubble. Im not sure what to say to help you, its a good start (better than my first post =P ). I tend to do something over and over till I get a grasp of what I am doing. I hope that makes sense or helps in some way.
Xissburg, I think probably your main trouble is you are too neat! I suffer from this same affliction. The best thing I can recommend is that you set yourself a time limit, say, 10 minutes, and then just whack a whole load of colour a rough shading down quickly, thinking about where the light is coming from. I've heard a good tip is to make yourself a plasticine head and light it with candles next to your monitor and draw from that. Once you've got the rough lighting done you can refine away to your heart's content!
But saying all this, your painting aint at all bad, just heavy on the ambient light! Hope all this helps... I'm not a great critique-ist at the best of times.
waheed nasir
25-01-2007, 11:29 PM
nice job everyone...i really enjoy varied styles and approaches here...:).
xissburg, for comments that help..sure. in my opinion, u really have to introduce more colors to achieve volume and richness and to get rid of a that inorganic look. only having light and dark tones of one color doesnt do a powerful job. shading is another area where u have to work on, according to the light source. but do think about more colors, like orange, even blues. u can really have a nice realistic result if u use them smartly.
i hope u get my point...:).
all the very best to everyone.
chainface
26-01-2007, 12:29 AM
Id agree with what J0hn and nasir are saying here....but same as everything you do, its all about practice!....especially with reference infront of you.
If thats your first digital painting, you dont have much to worry about.
As this is a speed painting challenge, work as fast as you can...dont worry too much about photorealism...if you capture just the essentials, the human brian 'thinks' its seein the rest...Its just personal preference here but im a fan of an loose 'unfinished' and more organic lookin style.
check out a guy called craig mullins..(the true master of digital painting)
www.goodbrush.com
i think seein his work will explain what im saying better!
keep it up, great job.

26-01-2007, 09:04 AM
hey! thanks for the tips and comments ;) . I see I need more colors and a better lighting at there(but I still dont know much about colors). Another problem of this painting is that I didnot use any reference :D(only a sketch I drew and scanned) . . . it makes things harder.
And, I really dont know how to proceed in digital paint exactly! First I do a color palette, fill an entire layer with the midtone of the skin, then with the darker tones I draw the shadows(first with the less dark and then with the more dark tones), and then I do the same for the highlights (with 100% pressure, round hard brush(I dont have a tablet!)). now I go over the picture with 10% to 20% pressure and start dragging the brush and picking more colors after the drags...i do it to smooth the painting. I'm a bit inspired by Linda Bergkvist and her works are very smooth :P, and her tutorials also teach how to make smooth paintings. Do anyone here knows a step-by-step tutorial on digital painting?! If you know please tell me.
Thanks for everyone! cya

Cheers Artecnl!!i just find it a more enjoyable way to paint digitally if i try not to think and dwell to long on details....or maybe its just my lack of patience!!:D
xxisburg..here's a wee technique, and philosiphy that takes practice, but its worth explorin' if you want to get into digital painting.
A lot of people, myself included, seem 'guided' or feel its the done thing to use the dodge and burn tools to shade and highlight their work when starting to use photoshop. It is the quickest method really, but it tends to be unrelyable i think.
After studying Craig Mullins work i began to explore using brush opacity....use a paint brush and paint a base colour, then set the brush opacity to roughly 30% and build the next relevant shades and tones up bit by bit...if you dont like the effect of seeing all the brush mark you can always smudge and blur things together...i just find this way allows for more subtle changes and control...just a though and my way of working at times!il shut up now!:D

kindly take it as an idea on how to carry on (esp. for those who are beginners).
below is the text that im copy pasting, that ive made for this walkthrough
hello there everyone..., sharing my digital painting (a speedy) of Mike Wazowski, a funny character in Monsters, Inc. (2001). with Steps.
painted in photoshop, using tablet, done from life, from a small toy model at work.
my primary concern to paint this, was to share my steps, esp. with beginners, who find it very hard, on how and from where to start and carry on and see the blank white surface/canvas as a very scary thing.
there are 12 steps, from the very start to finish. developing form, dimension, solidity, depth etc. as i go on.
i follow this same procedure for all of my work, its just that some are more finished. u can even take this further ahead till u get your desired result. see it as my personal approach and this is not the only manner of doing it. ive kept some areas very loose, cause my main conern was to show the procedure which is very simple and direct...:).
below are the steps and the final painting.
