View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge 134 & 135 - Custom Invention

Marty_McFly-3DT
25-01-2007, 01:40 AM
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 7th of Febuary 2007
Subject - Custom Invention

Custom Invention: Ok, the idea here is to create your own invention. It can be anything you like, as long it it appears to be a workable invention. An automatic banana peeler... a banana peel cannon... a banana peel projectile catcher... ummm... just be creative!

Have Fun and Good Luck!

My Starter... (I'll admit that I stole the idea for my invention... so I'm automatically disqualified... but I'll give an extra 5 points to the person who can tell me where I stole it from! ;) )

Marty_McFly-3DT - Excellent starter, and what a great topic, I'm really gonna jump on board this one, there's so much we can develop with invention idea's. Really nice clean modelling and always and a sweet render. I'm confident loads will jump on board for this smc.

Great Stuff

coooooooool one, tests the imagination too

previous few SMCs didn't went that exciting, as far as I think there the restriction of imagination was one cause

also moderators, I know u ppl hav other important works but try declaring at least result of undeclared SMC every week or two, or they will be over stacked and this will become SM intead of SMC...

Ok, here's my starter as is were, I was racking my brains trying to think of things that haven't been invented, my mind turned to allsorts of things, but then I came up with the more futurisitc style of labour saving device.

Most people hate gardening, some find it very stimulating but not me, so what better way to have a Hover Mower to mow the lawn, just program in the size and shape of the garden and hey presto you're lawn is cut. You can even take a ride with the leather seat provided :)

Just a daft Idea really, but I liked the logo and fake company I made so I had to submit it. I'm in the process of rendering and re-rendering different entries, a few are homeware inventions aswell as others.

I hope you like it, all information is on the composite render.

I decided to do something after all that threads based on cartoon artworks. A am finaly able to do something mechanic and last but not least...METALIC!

Btw: Nice starter Marty! ...although, I have no idea how it works

I am not sure if it's not already invented... this is a steam powered saw.

Hi! I tried to make "little , mechanical coffee bringer". If you don't have time for preparing coffee, just press the button, coffee bringer will
appear in 5 seconds.

Modeling time : robot: 41 min,transmitter and mug - 11min.
(teapot- i used max's object)
ligting- skylight+lighttracer- a few seconds
rendering- about 22 min.

Best regards :), lewis

This is an idea I've always had.

Its an express card slot laser mouse for laptops.... It works with blue tooth signal and the battery recharges while connected in the port. The coolest thing about it is that you always have your mouse stored in your laptop's Express Card Slot.

Hope You Like

Wow Pablo That egg gun is sweet But you might trash the egg upon fireing, but mabey if they were frozen.. Verry cool!

31-01-2007, 08:35 AM
Yea nice one Pablo, But Keylitho; about the egg breaking on firing;:) eggs are very strong when on end, you try sqeezing an egg with 2 fingers or 2 hands either end, it's very hard, so they could be ok and survive the blast. ;P hehe. :D

Excellent work everyone.. I can't think of much at the mo, but I do have a concept. It's just modelling it in the timeframe, plus I'm busy with my current project.

Happy modelling Guys and Gals.

hey keylitho...that is one hell of a weird idea....but i must say...i am jealous cuz i did not think of it....

hammering3D
31-01-2007, 03:50 PM
Talha is not work cause u atache two image, atache just one image, and then the iamge will show, and atache the one with wireframe, cause is ilegal to psot multiple entryes....and the wirefaremis a must ...and the iamge must be 800X600 or 600X800...so put the wire and render in oan single iamge that is that resolution size max...

Here's my first entry for this one.

It's a thing called "automatic idea drawer". All you need to do is to put that blue thing on your head and start thinking. The pencil then automatically draws all the things you're thinking about.

Modeling (3dsmax 9) - 45 minutes
Materials and scene setup - 20 minutes
Rendertime (VRay) - About two minutes

Hi this is my my first post to this forum in spite of reading very much during the last weeks
Great forum btw. :)

So here is my first entry.
Its an invention for everybody who needs more than his two hands ^^

ClassicGamer-3DT
01-02-2007, 02:43 AM
Ok 2nd Entry from me then :)

This was another idea based around the thoughts of "Wouldn't it be great if one big machine made your breakfast for you just how you liked it" With an onboard memory card to can save all of your favourite versions of breakfast.

Modelled as always within Cinema 4D, i've take 2 closeup screengrabs aswell as the full shot screengrab, because both the twiddly knobs for the tea/coffee section and the tap nearest the camera were created using the Loft Nurbs function within Cinema 4D, however at a later stage throughout the modelling process (about 40 mins in actually) I wanted to make a slightly change to both sections mentioned and made them both editable, unfortunatly that meant that they appear very highly subdivided in the full screengrab shot, they do actually have hypernurbs mesh smoothing on them aswell for the final render, but they are highly subdivided here too. So apologies as I say I was in at about 40 mins modelling and I liked the changes I'd done so simply pressing the undo a few times wasn't going to work either, so instead i've left them as they are. But I thought I'd better mention it, so they are not mesh smoothed, they are just edited loft nurbs :) Phew!! Oh and the breakfast is just to add to the scene, so it's not included in the modelling time.

Other than that I hope you like, this is only my second entry for the SMC, and it's another entry where i've made my own logo again yay :)

Kind Regards

Hi everyone

I haven't been around in a while, so dropped by to see how the challenges are going. I was a surprise to see that not a lot of people take part in these anymore. I remember when there would be pages upon pages of entry's.
total shame
well i guess nothing last for ever.

take care and good luck to those that still compete

Hmmm.... It was long time ago when I last applied to SMC... But this week I, at last, have time to make something :haha:.

Do You play trumpet? Or another wind instrument? You live in a big apartament building where You neighbours dont let You practise? So my invention is for YOU!!! This is first trumpet muffler, made of soft cork. ou just stick it in to trumpet and enjoy the silence... In addition it have pre-instaled mic and jack input for headphones, so You can hear what Youre playing...

Glad to know that I am not the only one to do this as a kid. I can't tell you how pissed off my parents were, though - I cut notches in the switch to keep the string from falling off. How's that for encouraging genius, eh?

This is my also my first entry for a speed-modeling challenge - it shows too, I had no idea what I was going to end up with for the first little while, and had to rush it at the end. I think I was going for a flying boat at the beginning, then it turned into this. :hmm:

Well here it is, the revolutionary Super RayGun 5000!

Hullo!

There is my 2nd entry:

At the beginning, I wanted to do sort off Spybot, which would be able to scan hardware processes in your computer without being noticed and sending informations out via its own connection...
But than I changed my mind and created a independent droid made for checking and fixing HW.
Hope you like it.

Technical:
I had several problems with this one. I am experimenting with metalic shaders in cooperation with HDRi and GI (radiosity).
problem no.:1: rendering time: 12 hours!!! (my computer is getting a veteran here)
problem no.:2: strange shapes on the floor probably caused by wrong settings of the GI.

Modeling: 55min.
Texturing: 30min.
Lighting: 25min.
Used soft: Cinema 4D (composing: Photoshop)

KINK

Phantom.cz, i think the weird shapes you are getting are just the effects of the light bouncing off the curved metal. it looks ok to me.

interesting invention by the way.

Really really great entries by all.

I'm dissapointed by the lack of entries this fortnight, but ii'm even more dissapointed with myself not making anymore entries. I've been incredibly busy lately and I hope that I'll be able to do better with the next SMC when it's announced tonight, i'm looking forward to a new topic.

@Pablo: Wow, great entries  I cannot believe that there is no winning award in your sig :hmm: :)

Ok, here is my second entry:

I have got the idea while writing a test at school.
It's a graphic tablett which transmits everything you write on it to one special sheet of paper. The receiver is a special paper-clip.
The written stuff appears in real time.

This way you can correct a test even after you have submitted it

Modelling time: 60 minutes
Texturing time: Dont know, much longer than modelling. This was my first try on a "professional" rendering ^^
Render time: about 5 minutes each
Software: 3ds max 8, Photoshop

Sry for my bad English, I hope you understand what I mean and enjoy it a little bit :)
