Character Background:

Kevin Fruglestein was a military judge on his planet before the explosion. That however was another life, another time, and another name. To say he was an honorable judge would mean that your corruption ran as deep as his or that you feared him, and rightly so. Innocence and guilt did not mean much to him and a "fair trial" were simply two words on paper in his court. He had done terrible things, and would no doubt have executed more terrible plans, and people, if the flames of his planet didn't become his very own executioner. As his terrible spirit rushed around angry at everything in the world he felt drawn to something. Something he did not feel irradiating from the other pathetic and angry spirits that surrounded him...

Klaus Sheapard lived on his planet oblivious of the wars that his previous race caused and fought. He was a young boy and knew or cared nothing for such things. He was as innocent as a boy his age could be. Sure he fought with his brothers and sisters but he listened to his parents (scientists in the military) and would have been brilliant if things continued on as everyone thought they would. He was also quite the developing strategist (it helped that he was slightly psychic) and military leaders were secretly keeping their eyes on him. This was all before the huge explosion ripped him of his flesh and everything he thought he knew. As the flames ate away at his body and his psychic abilities strengthened being so close to death he could see and feel the same thing happening to people all around him. He could feel their thoughts as their bodies became one with the fire and ash of the world. It was at that moment the horrible truth was exposed to him. The corruption, the evil, and the wars his race had inflicted. Clearly the propaganda machine of the government had not taken control of his mind. In that instant he would have wept if he still had eyes, or a body for that matter. All of a sudden he felt drawn to something, or someone...

Kevin Fruglestein and Klaus Sheapard....two names from two lives from so long ago. One still tries to remember, although he is the dormant of the two spirits that make up the corrupted, and vile executioner that is known as Praetor. His evil knows no bounds and has done deeds that would make the man from his previous life look like a saint. Only two people know where Praetor gets his immense strength and power from, and as said, one of them is the dormant of the two. His new race has spoken. He and his kind are the future. It was meant to be that this new great technology be part of him. All three races have been found guilty of their crimes and the sentence is death. It is a penalty Praetor knows all to well and is happy to carry out the executions....although....sometimes in the deep darkness of his mind, when he is alone to think about his thoughts, there is a whisper.

Alright, finally have some free time to post my final entry pictures I sent in. Wish I had another week to work on him but oh well, I am happy that I finished.

Still needs some general polishing everywhere but it is getting there. Need to adjust some weighting issues behind the head. Tonight is the night I finish when I get home from work. I have not really worked on th emuscles that much yet and the glow is kind of bad at the moment ut it will be fixed.

Thanks for the responses! Yea, my main intention for his pose is to give the impression that he just saw something and is just starting to move forward to investigate. I really wasn't going for a threatening pose (which you mentioned). It is rigged though so I am more then willing to try out some different ideas! :) He does look a little weird in that pose with his arm raised ready to fire but I did bring it up a little just to try different ideas. I also lowered his head slightly for a more menacing look. I still like the original pose a little more but I might have a change of heart. His far away arm will have his hand in a fist in the end as well. Anyway, here is a basic idea of the colors I'm playing around with. Trying to keep them simple at the moment for obvious reasons. The light blue parts will be glowing and his mechanical muscle will show an electrical current running through it. Will need to render the amb occ and normals map again but no big deal. I picture him being mainly composite where he has some metal for his inner frame and some out parts and a highly durable/dense plastic type material on the outside. I want him to appear fast, deadly, but also to have a fragile nature to him which gives him his speed (hence the plastics, etc) I also figure they are easier to replace after combat. I wil lstop typing and just paste my screenshot. Thanks again for the comments and I do enjoy the feedback. Also, these screenshots are just the diffuse! I know it might be obvious because it si so flat but I just want to come out and say it. Continuing the grind on my end...

Here is the pose I decided on. Also included are a series of poses and views I was considering but decided not to go with them. Have a general idea of what I'm going to do for the texture so it shouldn't take too long to get the general ideas down. Ignore some of the rendering issues in the ambient occlusion map. They are going to be fixed right now.

Have been sick, tired and busy this last week but I have a screenshot. Low poly is almost finished. Pretty much all of the uvs for the geometry in the screenshot are complete. I just need to plug up some of the holes and optimize it a little. Plan on starting to texture on Thursday. Also included is a pretty old normals map/amb occ test to see if everything was going in the right direction. Ignore the colors, I was just messing around. I hate it when things are close...

Long time no post! Have been working still but things have been going a tad bit slow over the past week however I stil lhave time to finish. Here is a screenshot of the high poly model that is pretty much finished now. I still need to make some slight tweaks and finish up his feet but it won't take long. I might go through and spend an hour adding more detail or just add more detail in the texturing stages which was my original plan. Will post a screenshot of the finished low poly tonight as I already started on it and created some nm tests. Time to finish this war!

02.23.07

Got a lot of little things finished up. Started on the inside of his knees. Things were moving along nicely today. I plan on finishing the high poly by the end of this month so this weekend will make or break that plan. I enlarged his legs as they did look a little on the short end. I also enlarged his chest to make him look more heroic and less generic. Thanks for the comments DDS and ThatDon. Another update will be posted today when I get home from work...

02.22.07

Some more progress. Could only work on it a couple hours today after work as it was a late night. :P Going to change the cod piece as it is a little too boxy. Still working on the pectoral/wire muscles. Will have another update later on today after a good night of sleep.

02.19.07

Long time no update! :P I try to post progress everyday so two days without posting anything is awhile for me. Alright, I have been really struggling with how to handle his feet and lower legs so most of my time the last couple of days was spent thinking about possible solutions. He has some artificial muscles and wires in places over his body as it provides more freedom as far as movement goes. The downside to using this method is that I don't want him to look to "low tech". Also it makes him appear weaker with his muscles/wires hanging all over the place. I am going to give him an artifical transparent type skin over his wires that helps hold them in place over certain parts of his body (like joints and other places where there is tension) to help with this. This way I can add in the extra detail without having him look too low tech, and I can add more detail to the model. I might even add more detail "inside" his body then as the skin will be pretty strong and resistant to most weaponry. So, lots of planning this weekend. I have a pretty good idea of how I am going to handle this guy right now. Usually when I model it is kind of like a painting. I don't add too much detail in one area at once but kind of jump around. I plan on having the high res model finished by the end of the month so I can add an insane amount of detail. I will then spend 1-2 days on the low res model and then texturing. Here is a screenshot of the feet I started on.

Waylon

02.17.07

Alright, I took another pass at the head as the design needed more detail I feel. If you look you can still see the same basic design is in there but just more mechnical looking. Also refined his upper legs some but most of the work is on his head. I still wanted him to have a mean look so I gave him some brow like ridges over his eyes. It will be interesting to see if I keep them but I feel it flows with the design nicely. Still needs some work but it is getting there! I'm going to clean this thread up a bit when I wake up so that past pictures will be a link you click on. Will be annoying to load so many pictures as this war continues...

Have more of the gun modeled. Needs some more detail and there are some smoothing errors at the moment but most of it is there. Have some cool ideas on texturing this guy. Should look pretty damn cool in the end if I pull off what I want to do. I plan on getting a crap load of modeling finished this weekend. I plan on modifying his waste slightly as right now it looks like he is wearing a bikini! This is jsut the basic shape and will look better as time goes on obviously. :P Time to take off the gloves!

02.14.07

Alright, I have been pretty tired the last couple of days so not much has happened. Plan on making up for it this weekend. Anyway, here is anther screenshot of the blockout but a little more refined. Normally I would start some of the high poly modeling by now but I wanted to pay special attention to his shoulder back area and how it will bend/deform. His shoulder pads had a slight redesign in some areas (mainly the back) because I felt the original idea was a little too simple. I tried to stay with the central theme though so I think it will work like this. Obviously some areas will be designed more as I model. I am going to start the high poly modeling after work tonight most likely. I think I will start with his gun since I have most of the cage blockout for the high poly model. Let me know what you think, and thanks for the replies! :)

Added a quick screenshot of a very basic model that I started showing basic proportions for the high poly model. I have basic primitives blocking out parts of the body, especially the lower legs. I will do a quick sketch of what I am planning to do for his back later on today. Will be a mix of a few different concepts. I will keep you all posted. I also am posting the background story for the character...

Here is a pretty rough abstract sketch of what I am thinking so far. I will try and get some more refined sketches up soon. Trying not to worry about too many details right now as I want the overall shapes to be nice. I know I want parts of it's body to have energy (maybe souls?) coming off and maybe some circuitry spread out. Will also post some of the background story I'm thinking about and weapon ideas, etc. I know I want it to have some very sharp/strong lines and parts of it's body will be broken away to have some exposed energy. I will think of how to do that later on! :) I have seen some cool sounding ideas on this forum so far!

Hey All! :)

Alright, have been busy today so I have not been able to spend as much time on sketching as I wanted to. Still nailing down the backstory but will have it soon. Here is another very rough sketch of the general idea I'm thinking of at the moment. I like the huge guns attached to his arms that hang behind him and the idea of a long helmet. His body will be more robotic in the end as it is a little too human at the moment. Will work on his design some and then produce some more detailed sketches.

Hello everyone!

Here is a more refined concept. I figure his arms are actually really big guns and his hand/claw can fold up inside. They can also be used as tripods for the massive guns. Will start to finalize this more today and post it's name and backstory when I submit the thumbnail. His guns are a little too generic at the moment so I will really be working on those in the next version. Want to have this all finished sometime on Friday!

Hey man, great start! Since it's a game character pay close attention to how he is going to animate and how you are going to rig him for posing. I like his face but it seems like he has no way to turn his head. However, this could be intentional. What's the back look like?

Reminds me of a cross between the Imperial guards in Star Wars and the metal Cylons in the new BSG.

BTW, don't I know you from somewhere Capt.. er... Fist of God?

ma3stro

FistOfGod
09-02-2007, 02:11 PM
Yes, his long head is intentional. I'm still deciding on how I should have him move his head. I may shorten it a little tonight when I get home from work and refine the concept some more. I will add some more detail as well. I want this guy to be a nice challenge to model!

Thanks for the comments!

i really like the armweapon design, very cool. the feet also look cool ,as does the head.

it looks like he has one arm.. you gonna put in a blade or something or is he going to be battle worn with damage or something?

FistOfGod
11-02-2007, 01:38 AM
Alright guys, here is my concept. Still has some rough areas but I will refine it as I am modeling. He will have parts of his armor that will have circuitry running through it. Overall I am pleased with the design. I will most likely add a ton more detail during the modeling phase. His name is Praetor. I will post his story later on todayas I am still tossing around some ideas...

Tank[NL]: Oh no, he has two arms. My sketch was just very rough and since his arms are basically the same I didn't want to draw the other one so I just shaded it. The newer concept should be a little more clear I hope. As I start modeling I might make his other arm different as I don't want him to be 100% symmetrical.

Thanks for the replies guys! Yea, I have a feeling I will have to adjust his head some more while modeling. I relaly liked the long head before but it just wouldn't work I think. I mgiht tweak a few things while modeling actually. Anything that looks too thin/fragile like you said frostsnake might be beefed up a little since it isn't the type of character to be feeble. hehehe Going to start modeling tonight. Will post the story for the character then.

DDS: Yea, it is a flexible material that also has some wires/artificial muscle fibers running through it kind of like his torso. It was a tough decision to add it though because I feel it kind of goes against the "main" design but I did need something there. The design will go through different stages obviously so I'm not too worried. Will post another progress screenshot before I go to bed!

Crispy4004: Yea, I guess the general proportions do look like him now that I look at it. Awesome game....think I might have to play it again soon!

Kalango: Yea, he will be way more detailed when the high poly model is finished. I have not even really started on his leg muscles other then a blockout. More screenshots coming soon!

Star Wars Ep3 was on tv so small update today. His thighs are thicker then the screenshot suggests and his feet are a tad bit large. Bigger update tomorrow...

Some more progress. Could only work on it a couple hours today after work as it was a late night. :P Going to change the cod piece as it is a little too boxy. Still working on the pectoral/wire muscles. Will have another update later on today after a good night of sleep.

Very nice so far :) Hope you sleep well!

If I were to change anything it would be in the chest/breast area, it looks like it could go slightly bigger.

Yea, I agree about his legs DDS and just fixed that problem. I originally had his chest a little bigger ThatDon but decided to scale it back slightly. I think I will make his chest larger though so it is more exagerated. Update coming soon...

Looking great i am sure the normal mapping will work well for you. Can't stand the colour you have rendered with above however i am sure it has no relevance to the colours you will eventually use.

FistOfGod
22-03-2007, 10:40 AM
Yea, you are correct. The screenshots above have nothing to do with the final colors. I just gave it a weird color in xsi to help me see the low poly model when building over the high poly.

The movement is really conveyed well in your final pose, however i would really like to see at least one hand raised so that he looks like he is shooting, and maybe a twist in the neck.

FistOfGod
25-03-2007, 12:32 AM
Yea, I'm going to be playing with the pose right up until the deadline. I will probably lower his head slightly so he has a more urgent look that fits with the rest of his pose. I will probably raise one of his arms slightly too. We will see though. The final pose I choose can be something completely different. I'm going to post some screenshots in a couple of hours of the texture I'm playing around with at the moment.

Wow first time i noticed this one, really cool stylized design, very distinct, good work fistofgod!

The pose looks dynamic and you can get a sense of movement. It's not very threatning / imposing, however (which really isn't saying anything, since that doesn't have to be a purpose).

FistOfGod
25-03-2007, 03:50 AM

Still needs some general polishing everywhere but it is getting there. Need to adjust some weighting issues behind the head. Tonight is the night I finish when I get home from work. I have not really worked on th emuscles that much yet and the glow is kind of bad at the moment ut it will be fixed.
