I agree, it is a nice and creepy concept! I like the size of it's weapon and it seems like it has some weight to it. I also like the head and how it connects to the body. Can't wait to see what the high poly model looks like! One thing I just noticed is that the legs seems kind of plain compared to the arms and torso. Might be cool to make them a little more interesting. Looking forward to seeing more!

Looking good, my cybernetic pal. ;) I agree with FoG on the legs. Whereas the upper torso looks like it has some real meaningful form and weight, the components on the legs seem to be lacking definition. It's almost like they are just stenciled on. Also the weapon is huge, and looks to be a big part of the presentation of your model. It would be cool to see some more solid ideas on that as well. Great job so far, DDS!

This is a blockout, just for proportions, I will build my model on top of this and I'll never have to worry about going out of my volume and I'll always be able to make an idea of the final thing.
As a side note, have in mind that even this being blockout, I'll build the highres first before the lowrez :) since I want the game resolution model based on the version which perfectly shows what I want, not viceversa. That's what I do at my job, and It works better for me.

13-02-2007, 10:09 PM
So... you've blocked 'er out first in lowpoly, then go back & model the uber hi-res goodies. Then make sure the Low matches the High geometry? ???? o .O
What program u using to model? & Using that program's normal map funtion or what??
Indulge me in details for I have not normal mapped before...
-Klash
starting binary translation......100%
choosing human expression....100%
compiling data....100%
printing....
- I choose to blockout first...so I can make an idea of proportions and volumes. That thing is not a high poly or a low poly. It's just something quick to get me started on the high so I don't make ANY major mistakes such as parts that don't make sense, or proportions that are really wrong and would take me days to fix. After the high, will come the low, which is not a blockout, is actually a insanely accurate mesh that needs to be 100% perfectly optimized, UVed and ready to animate to work well :)
I choose to make the high first because if I have to choose...what has more quality? what's more accurate to what I really would like to be? the high resolution, of course. Then building the low on top, is easy. Now you have to be very careful in placing the details and not making crazy silhouettes with the highpoly because the lowpoly is very limited (i.e. spikes). You have to make as much of use of the normal map as possible, modeling for games is not modeling for vfx...so yeah, if you choose to do the highpoly first you will get better results but you must think some steps forward...

One of the most detailed W.I.P's i have ever seen, hope to see it completed maybe after the deadline, lol. Having tried hard to think how i could possibly give it some critique (models can allways be improved) the best i could come up with is that i do not understand how the individual pieces and the model would move exactly in some places, i.e. the shoulders and neck, so as a result of this i am slightly concerned about how it might deform when rigged. This is an amazing piece, i tip you to have a very high chance of winning this comp. I think the other forums will be very suprised about how well 3dtotal perform in this war providing we all manage by the deadlines. Keep it up top marks.

I would suggest trying to use parts of the model that you have allready finished to detail areas that are incomplete, as i think if you left areas that lacked the same detail on your model it would not do your time and artistic skills justice. Good luck mate i hope you get through the sleepless nights with a smile on your face.

Wow there was no need for me to worry! You are a really fast modeler. It's looking fantastic. My favourite model in this comp methinks. Excuse my ignorance but where are the weapons? Will you model them seperately using the extra 1k poly's? I can't think of any critique i can give you that would help at this point in the process as you allready have most of the model finished, so all i can offer is encouragement. Keep it up, at this rate it will be a huge misjustice if you do not finish in one of the winning positions.

Dear God, jaw dropping work. There are a lot of models in this comp that ooze hours upon hours of work, but IMO yours has reached a new completely insane level.
I had my doubts with the normal map too, but it looks like you've also made a believer out of me. Speaking of which what is the normal map's dimensions?

I have not posted here since 2003 but I just wanted to say that I too am impressed in how you were able to pull off the normal map. Just goes to show what you can do as far as creating the high poly mesh. Sorry if you already have not mentioned it but what software did you use to project the high poly model onto the low? Goodluck with teh texture and hope you get done in time. :lurve:

From what BiG ToE told me the weapon cannot be attached to the body in any way (even visually) otherwise it has to be included in the 6k count. Which sucks immensly. You had better ask him if your weapon using the 1k count is kosher as if it is i for one being perfectly honest would be hugely pissed if this rule only applied to me.

Hum... depends, i don't think it's just a visual cue matter, but also one of logic and interpretation.
If you check my character concept, you'll notice that he's holding the miniguns, but at the same time the guns have a magnetic clamp on the wrist area, to improve stability during fire. But it's perfectly clear that the guns aren't part of his body. And according to what i've been told, they count as the extra 1k polys.
While on the other hand, DDS's character's arm actually turns into a massive gun, looking like it's cybernetically attached to the body. Taking the rules into account, that the weapon should be something that (in a game) you can press the number keys and switch it, that's not what happens in your case.
Mind you, i can perfectly visualize the character's lower arm & hand sliding into some kind of socket there, and that big gun actually detach. I hope neither you nor DDS take what i said the wrong way, i'm just saying how that gun could easily be considered part of the body.

I think you should not texture it using the same colours as it would make it to similar to his work, which although it undaubtedly looks great (to a certain audience) it would be nice to see you do something more unique with the colouring. I liked how it was going before with the moss algae look, it would look interesting maybe if you could texture it so that it looked like it had plants growing from between the parts. Which would meen lots of greens and browns. Anyway whichever way you go with this i am sure it will look great, nice work.

Very impressive work... as usual.... I think if you turn the brightness of background down will be work better. it has really goor normal map details a lot.. but the noise or dent stuffs kill the details. IMO.. I guess Recuding dirt or noise stuff and make high- small specular on it.. it will look cool.... but It's my suggestion....you have better eyes than me.. Great man.~

Although it is true that the color will end up looking a bit similar to ours, DDS' design rings more true to the Giger look. and if it's not broken, why fix it?
Giger, Nirasawa, Nihei, borg look is nothing new. In fact, in this contest, there are numerous design themes that are direct biproduct of these references.
the question is now how well is design such as this one going ot maximize the design theme that is almost becoming a genre of its own.
So, I'm all for it.
Now, are judges sick and tired of this look and want something completely new? If that's the case, both DDS and Taehoon's entries are doomed :hurt:
BTW... zombified boobs... Scary...
can we call it "Zomboobs"?

I think myself and Torokun are both presenting good arguments, so don't think about it too much and just do what you feel comfortable with and get it done for the deadline. I am sure both options would look good.

this entry rocks, if you haven't heard that for the last million times! :)
but it needs some more accented specular map, it'll give that needed life and slimyness [if you're going after that look of slime and decay] to the model.
