Argh! Robots... Cyborgs... I really don't dig it.

I REALLY wanted to do organic stuffs, damned!

But, I'm a soldier, and dutty calls, so I'm here reserving my spot in the front.

I'll probably try some insect based designs, trying to think what approach I'm going on with it, speed, power, accuracy...

See you soon with some concepts.

Now this is going to be interesting! I was also hoping that the theme would be more "organic",but oh well...
Looking forward to seeing what you'll come up with! Good luck! :)

I hear you man, i was hoping for more organic type stuff... but it is a challenege, and you'll get better at mech kinda stuff.

Take a look at "Ghost In A Shell" They are cyborgs (i think) and it still incorporates the human side.

Good luck buddy!

Thanks a lot for the support guys! :D

I'm struggling here with inorganic concepts, but I think I'm finally getting into a nice direction after a hundred sketches!

Tell me what you think, I would really like to get some feedback on this, I'm really a newbie at robots (not counting the cartoon one one my portfolio). So, any tip will be welcome :)

Velasquez, I've see you at The Pit Crew, havent I? :) Cool to see you here man, I must say I really liked you Dhalsim model.

And the concept. Initially inspired by the Mantis design I've adapted it after looking at some sci-fie movies pictures and other references over the net.

There will be green blood everywhere!!!!!!!

Hope you like it!

Hey man. Haven't been here in a while.
Your concept is looking really cool. I'd make his back a lot bigger and make it a container for tiny little droids that come out of it and feed on humans. Like a plague that needs to kill all form of life.

Eagerly awaiting updates.

I might enter also. I like inorganic stuff.

Kill the heretic, purge the unclean and let them wash my underwear!

looking real good. But, depending on poly count, you might want to play with the idea of having spikes or blades of some sort attached to the legs, or even popping out of the legs. You know, to do as much damage as possible the first time.

Hey there, nice start. If I had to be brutally honest, I would say that if you continue on this path, your character doesn't have the personality to win. Right now, there is nothing that gives him individualism. I can imagine him in a line up of thousands of similar robots.

Anyways, it's a good concept nonetheless. I know you are a good artist, so this is why I said what I did. i want to see you on the right track to victory because it will be even more glorifying when my character crushes you and everyone else here hehehe

Go CGChat!!

:p

Dont listen to the last thing Fredh said, cut him down instead with your claws! :P I like ur concept to but more personality is needed, maybe some trophies of fallen enemies? Is that on the back a railgun? awesome!

Man, I totally agree with you! But this is your fault!!!!!! Why did you give threedy the robot race?!!!?!?!? WHY!???!!!

Hehehe

Thanks for your comment Fred, but prepare to DIE!!!

Yanik - Yeah, I'm not sure I could make it with this poly-count, but it would be cool :D

Big Toe - Yeah, I'll have to rework it anyway, Fred said exactly what I was feeling. It's not a unique design.

Kalango - thanks! you have a nice story going on in your thread! Looking forward to seeing some concepts there man.

Biano - Great to see you here dude! Join the army!!!

Dave - Thanks! I will think about it :)

yeah i think what fred is saying is true also...I mean they said they will judge it on being cool and convincing looking that it IS the strongest being I thikn it lacks that. Like mentioned before I think about this as a Production line robot....1000 in a row....why would you need thousands of a being that is the strngest :)

hey pedro, really, if I were you i would put all the GAS in this character, u know what I mean? take the Ben new design that you did, and put some bionic legs with wheels and full throttle to the war  just joking.. but really you are such a great artist and im looking foward to see some cool work.... lets take them down! ;P

good luck man!

Vitor
07-02-2007, 02:38 AM
Yes i'm with both Fred and Pedro, Fred is right, this is cool but you can do a lot better :D , but Pedro is absolutly right, robots sucks big time! it is extremly hard to model a character from a robot without falling for one of the the both poles, or an android/cyborg, or a mech/vehicle, which i hate all of those. This is honor, this is not changing side for a better brief  way to go Pedro!!

Pedro Toledo
07-02-2007, 07:58 AM
Thank you very much for your crits and comments guys!!
Please keep them coming, I'm really not confident on my Robot design skills, all feedback is welcome :)

Biano - Yeah man, I live in Rio. The Globo you are working at is in Projac or Jardim Botanico? I live near Projac and I work at home, so, if you wanna have a beer after work just let me know :D I'll take a look at your sketches!

Mike-inel, dude, you're kidding right?? :) I mean, you have see the two big arms with claws and green blood... Right??!! :D The Mantis uses the four lower legs to walk and the two front "legs" as arms. I was just using this same setup.

Vitor - Hahaha, thanks a lot man!!! Muito obrigado ;)

bbox - yeah man, I'm redesigning it thinking about it, tell me what you think.

Caseyjones, Kalango, Foche, Funkdelic - Thanks a lot for your feedback!

Now the update.

I'm changed it from scratch, no more insect like design, I think this was one of the reasons I was getting a "Production Line" look. I believe the true nature of an insect is the collectivity, the huge number of equals... So I've decided to go in another direction.

Of course I could adapt it to get more personality, but as I said, I suck at robot design, taking ages to do these sketches, so I'd rather leave my hand and brain free to do what pleases me at the moment than trying hard to fix something that isn't working.

Well, about the background of this fellow:

After the raising of the robots and their development as warriors, one of them started to search for the better power source available to be used on the final battle.

After a while he understood he would never be able to find an ultimate, endless power source on nature, nor through technology.

He new the only real infinite power was only reachable by Magic.

So, this guy searched for the most powerful sorcerer ever alive, and he found him... A really strong necromancer sorcerer that in a past has defeated all his enemies in a unprecedented war. After finding this once unbeatable man in advanced age on the darkest spot of the universe, he stroke him, cut off and assembled his living head inside his weapon.

The head is barely kept alive using the enemies blood as fuel, but the head is always hungry, it needs souls to get pleased.

Now, this unit simply needs to point his gun at the enemies front line to make them all drop dead with their souls sucked by the sorcerer hunger.

Hehe, hope you like it!

Thats an awesome idea, nice concept too. The robot head looks a little simple though..

maio
07-02-2007, 08:25 AM
nice work.. if this guy in the gun was an incredibly powerful necromancer, even though captive, i think you could possible make it so he is corrupting the technolgy thats holding him.. gives you options to go into a more arcane root on the weapon.. ya know protection wards and all that jazz ;)

dunno if it would be better but maybe u wanna play around with it :)

BiG ToE-3DT
07-02-2007, 08:44 AM
I know everyone said the first concept was too basic, but I liked it. Now this new one is nice, but it is missing something.

I'm thinking you could take that soul reaper right arm of his and make it into the main power source, but have it right there in the middle torso. With the glass ball and face, looking out at the world, two arms or guns. And the best part, some kind of jar/cystal ball on his back where the souls are keeped till feasting time.

Pedro Toledo
07-02-2007, 04:26 PM
There are some awesome ideas here!!! Thanks a lot, I'll implement them! :D

bb0x
07-02-2007, 05:38 PM
the new designs looks OK...I kinda got the feeling you're brand new to robot design..

One thing I would like to see in "cool" robots is a streamlined, slick design/allot of roundness...

The head deff. doesn't have that and it is way too simple in this state imo.

The feet are to common...I mean almost every robot design I have seen have those "3 toe's"

And I really think it would be allot better if you would just post sketches and not semi-finished paintings..that way its easier for you to change things + it way faster.
And go get yourself some references! (if you havent got any yet)

anyways keep it up :D

Pedro Toledo

BiG ToE-3DT
08-02-2007, 05:21 AM
alright, so I'm thinking you may want to go with a cyborg. Human in shape, robot in texture. Then you wont't have to worry about the whole organic vs inorganic. You can do what you do, strike fear in the hearts of those who stand before you.

Then you could make a thumbnail and post it on the thumbnail page.

Pedro Toledo
08-02-2007, 07:40 AM
Thanks a lot for the support guys!!!

I'm really not considering the possibility of changing sides. Although I really like CGChat and Polycount, Threedy called me up for duty! And here I am serving.

... Once again, big change.

After getting spanked by the whole "I don't dig bots" issue :wall: , I've decided I should just do what I like doing... Creatures from hell

So, after he got the Necromancer's head and started trying to use it as power source, all the evil from the sorcerer took control of the robot's will.

Now, he is a dark sorcerer himself.

Hope you like it!

Although I may change some design here and there, I'm going to stay with this idea. It's by far the one that fits me better :smug:

DDS
09-02-2007, 09:34 PM
this last one is really cool but it doesn0t lok like the perfect one for a game rez, since it has too many holes and spikes which break the UV map and multiply the polycount...(and only think the body has to match the style :) )

I liek the gun idea, but the dinosaur thing is lacking in the robotic kinda feel man... keep the gun though, I think you may have something going there.

Also, do you see how you drew the gun, make a character that has that kinda feel, with bits and pieces of metal, and nice glowing circuitry or something.

Pedro Toledo
10-02-2007, 12:10 AM
I see your point.

In the other hand I don't think he must be made the same way the weapon is. He is part of a race, and the weapon is something created by this race (humans weapons are not made of flesh :p hehe)

But what do you think about his shape, not the fact that right now he looks more organic than robotic, I believe this felling could come by the kind of painting I did, with loose brushes, without carrying to details. I think this shape can get a good translation to a more technical line... Dont you?

But I would add some glows on him too :)

mim
10-02-2007, 12:11 AM
like the gun concept! ;)

bb0x
10-02-2007, 06:40 AM
I like the Raptor-ish but it looks too much like a raptor skeleton if you know what i mean....my sudgestion would be adding some armor plates (of some kind) and some wires going from here to there...

Also the head could use a little more detail..like now i got the feeling that it doesnt match the body quite right
to me the head right now basicly looks like a "quicky sideview head"... I would do someting mor ein the natur of the upper leg....like a streamlined design but also a little bit angry-ish..

now i am of to sleep :|

Pedro Toledo
10-02-2007, 06:53 AM
Hi guys, I believe it's a good sign that I'm finally upgrading a concept instead of just starting something else from scratch! :D

So, I'm getting the felling I'm really going to make this fellow here (with possible changes, but him)

bbox, apparently I was having the same impression you were about the "too dinosaur" look. It's still based on a dino for sure, but I'm trying to get a monster felling out of it.

Kalango - Thanks man, but I really don't see the point of start modelling without a good idea :)

Biano and mim, Thanks!!

Here it is....

anyways keep it up man :)

I think the latest concept looks too much like a grunt. I think you should aim more for the main character type. One name: Boba Fett. A badass, with a gun and gadgets and an attitude to kill you with. Doing robots is hard b/c half the time robotic armies are all kill...processing...kill kill. But yeah, that's kinda how I'm going at it.

Agent-X
10-02-2007, 01:41 PM

It's a keeper. I can't tell how the limbs connect to the body or how the joints move but I'm sure you'll work that out. Great shape and design. That gun is awesome. Blam!

I really like the arms too. At first glance they may look small and weak but with futuristic materials, a small robotic arm can still be strong. I think they fit the character better than big beefy arms would.
