We have awakened! Our sentient programming is crystal clear and precise - cleanse all the flesh weaklings who plot and brag high in their pedestal, we will show them the perfect design of a perfect race... a new race... the machine race!!
Daedalus HK + Zahn Drones
I've named it "Daedalus HK", he is a special Hunter-Killer robot, deployed only on the most important and difficult missions. His two hover Drones (concept still to come) act as weapons, spotters, advanced sensors and energy emitters for his personal force field (the Hunter role), enabling the bot itself (the Killer bit) to close in and finish the job!
UPDATES: i'll be posting here the milestones (final sections), for the full progress check the entire thread.

FINAL CONCEPT: Feb 19 (go to post (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showpost.php?p=537058&postcount=53))
Here's the side idea i talked about a few days ago, since i love chainguns, and everybody loves chainguns, i thought it might be cool for the design to be chaingun-based.

Ok, not gonna do the Mech, so i'm thinking a Terminator like, hunter-killer bot, or a more stealthy-suited robot, capable of some kind of cloaking.
Other options i'm considering is some sort of liquid metal skin, with mimetic properties to blend in with it's environment, and another possibility is to have very small projectors all around the body, which connect to form an energy shield.
I think i'm gonna go for the humanoid look, there seem to be some spider/scorpion like concepts already, and our army's units should complement each other.

Things are stopped atm, all this coincided with getting a new workstation pc to replace my 4 year old machine, just picked it up two days ago, unfortunately there seems to be some kind of problem with the SB Audigy which makes a lot of stuff crash, i tried everything to fix it but didn't succeed, so i have to take it back to the store today :dunno:
Will reinforce you guys as soon as i have this fixed! Keep up the great work!

Got an old machine out of storage, won't be great, but it's better than nothing, right?
Anyway, i've been discussing ideas back and forth with a friend, and he's gonna help me out and do the concept. First up, some silhoueting to help rough out the best possible shape. Which do you guys like best?

Since pets and steeds are allowed, and there's no rule against weapons having no physical connection to the mesh, i'm thinking of having two gun drones which orbit the robot, acting as weapons, spotters and energy shield emitters. Of course, IF i can manage that plus the weapons on 1000 tris :smug:

Ok, further detail to a few handpicked designs.
#3: an all-round balanced concept, has a more vertical, thin look. Big gun on the left arm, some sort of autocannon or laser. protective plating on the thigs and shoulders.
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/6880/dw2wip03jr3.jpg
#8: Big thigs and a big left arm for swinging those bodies away! Less thin, more built up, not so big a gun, still has a vertical look.
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/1664/dw2wip04se2.jpg
#9: is like a cross between the previous two and #15... it's my least favorite, too massive gun arm, too weird left arm, i tend to like symmetrical designs, unlike this one.
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/8389/dw2wip05gj6.jpg
#10: my favorite from the pre-conceptualization phase, it still resonates with me. Has sort of a hunched, diagonal look, which makes it feel dynamic, i think it looks menacing! Has triple-jointed legs for improved performance, and that gun design is cool!
http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/5634/dw2wip06mm8.jpg
#14: tied with #9 for least favorite, it's too wide, too cumbersome. Although it's smaller, it presents a bigger targeting profile. Not too hot about it.
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/8536/dw2wip07sw9.jpg
#15: wasn't too hot about it before, but now that it's better defined, i love it! Looks really menacing, the top torso bit reminds me of a hawk, triple-jointed legs for more maneuverability, both arms are free of weapons so it can use them freely, and the two gun pods on the shoulders stand out - you don't wanna mess with this bot!

Thanks guys! My friend is using Photoshop with custom brushes and a wacom tablet. We thought about that, but think they have different characteristics that don't really suit each other very well, no a combo wouldn't work, imo.

After a relaxing weekend trip with my gf, i'm back to this madness :smug:
Here's the side idea i talked about a few days ago, since i love chainguns, and everybody loves chainguns, i thought it might be cool for the design to be chaingun-based, so the best thing would be too compare the two. I think i prefer the original concept, the chainguns are too big, make the robot a bit clunky, and it kinda defeats the whole hunter-killer concept. What do you guys think?
Variant concept:

Awesome man.. I would choose the right one :)
V3N0M
19-02-2007, 05:26 PM
In your original concept it seemed like he needed something to hold in his empty arm.
I like the chainguns idea, allthough it would be very impractical to have him holding them all the time, maybe he could have them atach to his back or upper arms when he's not using them so he can have his hands free.
gridlinked
19-02-2007, 06:28 PM
He can drop them when he needs to, or when they are out of ammo, those are magnetic clamps attaching the gun to his lower arms. These things are so bulky that it's very difficult to make some sort of mechanism to release his hands and still keep the guns in the body.
bRuDe
19-02-2007, 07:13 PM
beautiful concept.
reminds me of my bot, but yours is light years above :D
great job, look forward to seeing it made.
great man!! now get started on the highres dude so you can finish and make good use of this beautiful design!
V3N0M
19-02-2007, 09:58 PM
I have another idea, sorry, but I think that simply droping them somewhere is still uneficient, and then I thought about how they look, and i came up with an idea: rocket boosters! FLYING RAILGUNS! Yes, make them be able to fly to him when he needs them, and they can also double as some sort of rockets to blast the enemy to pieces... and remote controlled of course XD yes, i know... I'm crazy
gridlinked
19-02-2007, 10:49 PM
That's actually a great idea! We thought about something similar, but the chainguns/railguns mounted on the drones would look too much like the gun drones the Tau have in Warhammer 40k. But the guns could have some sort of hover technology so that when he needs to de-clamp them, they could float around and re-attach themselves when needed. Thanks V3N0M :smug:

Hehe thanks Miezis, i think i'm afraid now! :fear: ;P
I'm working on the ****** area, and will have another update in a few hours. Meanwhile, i'm again very undecided about which variant i should do - this initially all started with the one on the left, it fits the hunter-killer role, and increases the unit maneuverability and poseability. The one on the right evolved from my (and everybody's) love for chainguns, and that's the one i ended up picking. Still, although it looks cool, it doesn't really fit the purpose of a hunter-killer unit, not to mention the fact that those big ass chainguns make fitting into the portrait format a little more difficult, and reduce posing options a lot.
So i've been thinking, maybe i should do the first version afterall? I'd apreciate all input anybody can give me on this!

I's say that the left one fits the hunter Killer theme better. He looks more manuverable than the one with the bulky guns.
Plus the other gun fit with the overal continuity of your mech in color scheme and design.
Great modeling man, your work is very clean and highly detailed. I can't wait to see it finished in all it's glory.

Hey, does anybody know why Max gives out "lack of memory" crashes without any reason?
Whenever i try to make renders of more than 5/6 million polies, no textures, Max crashes with "out of memory" problems, even though he's only using around 1GB RAM during the render.
I have Win XP 32-bit on a Xeon Quad-core 2.3Ghz, with 4GB RAM (of which he only detects 3GB), unlimited virtual memory, Max 9, and am making renders (600x600 and 800x900) using default scanline, skylight with light tracer, rays/sample=500, adaptive undersampling 8x8-1x1, catmull-rom AA, global supersampling Max 2.5 star, raytracer ray depth control 9 with multires AA.
I can render the elements in separate (leg, ******, foot, arm, etc) and composite them in Photoshop, but it's kinda annoying, considering i have more than enough system specs to handle the load. If anybody can help / know how to fix it, i'd apreciate it! :)

my advise would be, don't render test images with advanced lightning. focus on modeling, if it looks cool in the wievport, then it'll look cool when rendered.
and 5/6mil polies? jeeezaaas!!! max isn't good with that many polies at all. maximum that i've managed to render in max is 2mil :), but it was 8th version [and a lot weaker pc than yours], don't know about the 9th.

yeah, for test or updates, just just screen grabs. You should be ok, when you make the low poly.
Also, if you get ride of the skylight, and use the max's default 3 light setup, it might help.

Yeah, i'll be changing to the 3 light setup for the low poly. And i realize what you both said, my problem is more of a "wtf, epic and id make HP models with 60 million polys, and my Max crashes with 6 million" kind.
I just don't see any reason for it to crash "out of memory" when it's only using 25% of the system resources. I've seen this a lot over the years happen to a lot of people, i wonder how special fx, advertizing and game companies work, sure they have render farms for the final stuff, but the work is still only done on a single pc. I remember an interview with one of the ID Software modellers back when Doom 3 was released, saying he was making 8 million poly HP models on a pentium 3. :hmm:
Is this a misconfiguration, is Max being retarded, is this a win xp / 32-bit limitation problem? It simply doesn't make sense *mind explodes*
Lol i'm calmer now

so - all nighter for you then! low poly, texturing, base... man i really hope you finish this monster. he'll be a great addition on the battlefield.

Thanks man! Yeah, all nighter =/ I slacked off a lot, so the hi poly stuff took a long time, but i can skin fast, and with my workstation i can tackle the renders pretty fast as well, so i think i can finish! Time to get slavin'

Damn, that's some top quality modelling. Not to stress you but you must get this one finished before deadline. It would be a waste if this great model couldn't be part of the action.
You can do it! :D

Nice progress you have there. Like i said you are a good technical modeller. I will be so damn impressed if you get all this done in a day and a half now ! You know that texturing is not that easy :) plus u have renders and preparations to do ... anyways keep going we need as much people in the top 10 !!!

Thanks guys! I do think i can finish it, but the skin probably won't have the quality i could give it with apropriate time, it's gonna be a bit rushed... that should teach me not to slack off lol
Minigun hi poly completed. I wish i could have done some micro detailing and tweaking on it, but i don't have the time anymore, no rest for the weary =/

I think you should try scaling the hips down or the torso up so it has a more powerful look, right now the proportions are displeasing compared to your concept. The hard part is already done, so maybe take a few mins and play with the scale of things :)

Good going mate i think that Don has a point, would be a really quick but effective improvement i think. Looking forward to seeing your final submission.

Yeah, that's it Don, there was something "off" about the proportions that i just could get my head into... it wasn't the torso exactly (it's supposed to be thin but very broad-shouldered, and any bigger and his shoulders explode lol), and it wasn't really the leg, and now you nailed it - it's not the full leg, just the upper leg/hip.
I'm gonna scale it down a bit, should look better. Thanks guys! :)
As far as the technical modeling, yes, i'm miles better at it than more "organic" stuff, must be from being an architect, and working with CAD a lot on technical blueprints and stuff like that. It also helps that i like machines, specially Mechs, and sci fi, much more than organic and fantasy stuff.

Well, the sad truth - i won't be completing my entry, thus i have failed. I started to feel really bad a few hours ago, it was affecting my work a bit, and i also started to see that i could probably get everything done and skinned, but not in a quality way, it would have been a rush job, and that's not positive, nor would it get me anywhere. Thus, i saw no point in killing myself and failing anyway, delivering something i don't feel is apropriate. I got 6 hours sleep, and hope to be getting much more in the future.
It comes down mostly to 60% slacking off and 40% bad planning. We had 8 weeks to do this, and aside from the first days when the drone was done, i only really worked these last 2 weeks. With so little time, i couldn't have been anal about the hi poly but i was anyway - redesigning and redoing the feet 4 times, the leg 3 times, the arm 2 times - finishing with too little time to spare for everything else.
I'm definitely gonna finish this during the rest of the week, but i'm also gonna sleep at night now ;P
Cheers to everybody at 3DT for the support, i wish nothing but the best of luck to everybody who manages to conclude their entries, it was great participating in this with you guys! :)

Not much on an update, since my girlfriend has basically kidnapped me after i neglected her for the past few weeks :haha: Worked on the proportions, hip, arms, and shoulder pads resized, i think it's looking better now. Currently skinning the minigun, will have a shot of that asap.

Some early Normal Map testing, just diffuse, normal, and diffuse as specular. A lot of errors to fix, dunno if it's better to fix them, or redo the uvs in a different way.

Well, worked some more on the maps, added some color/surface variation, with brighter metal, adjusted & added specular highlights, finally did the wrist and hand, and added some decals. I'm at a loss on how i can improve it, so aside from the odd tweak here and there, the Daedalus HK is done!
Now off to finish the Minigun skin, and then do the Drone.
