i know, it has "cliche" writen all over him, but this is just a starting point for the modeling, i don't want to spend more time on conceptualizing "the coolest cyborg ever, with giant claws and really cool stuff on him...". his further evolution will be in 3d, where i'll be changing the concept a lot an giving him personality.

Looking good :)

May i ask what program your using to model with? Reminds me of Milkshape for some reason!

miezis
06-02-2007, 02:30 PM
no, its 3ds max :)

Opul

Ace, sorry the color scheme just reminded me of it for some reason.

Keep adapting to your robot tho! Can see it being modified rather heavily ;)

milkshape 3d had that god awful ugly baby blue for default background [face_puke]

miezis
06-02-2007, 02:53 PM
hehe, i use the blue-ish background because i model in grey matherial, nice way to see what i am doing.

miezis
08-02-2007, 10:36 AM
i had a fealing that i was working in thin air, and the ideas didn't come to me on the fly, so i decided to draw a little more solid concept. here it is. experimented with color scheme aswell... but i'm not shure about that. but atleast now i have a much clearer picture what to do.

crap! :( i see what you mean! i guess both of us were looking in the direction of ancient greece for inspiration... but still i think that my entry will differ from that you've given, for my char will be more of a "[mecha]hoplite from hell", than a mere banner carrier :P.
cool work from Fantom though!

started to model. i'm going to create a hi-poly model first for normal maps and when it's ready i'll do the low poly one. this is a torso, next i'll do the arms and the head.

Torokun
11-02-2007, 05:20 AM
Coming along very nicely!

Are you sure you can do that level of detailed work for 6,000 polys with all the separate parts like that?

miezis
11-02-2007, 10:47 AM
well yeah, it won't be shining through that much as it is now. and normals map will help a lot. by the way i won't be wasting poligons on face, for i'll have a helmet for it.

11-02-2007, 10:51 AM
This whole idea is quite cool, and its lookin nice.

sweet modelling btw.

11-02-2007, 04:46 PM
Modeling is looking pretty nice man. All of those details should look pretty damn cool when the high poly model is finished. I'll have to keep my eyes on this thread, keep us posted!

thanks guys, the poligon count doesn't mater for now Ghosty, as this is a hi detail model for the normal maps.
started to do arms yesterday

Can I just have a question? How are you going to make it lowpoly?

I mean, how do you know which edges to collaps and which vertices to weld to keep the same result with normal map?

Btw. the model looks really cool....

ok, i'm back on the track. stupid flu kept me away from the pc for a week!!! started to make the head and continued to model hand.
Gost-D low poly version has to follow as close as possible to the hi poly one. can't put it any better.

07-03-2007, 10:04 PM
You can do iiiiittt! I too have been battling with said Lazy. It's a tough enemy to beat ;p Gotta turn it up a notch on my side now. Awesome legs so far. Can't wait to see it all assembled. Started on lowpolying yet?

ryvick
11-03-2007, 03:01 AM
i loved the previous torso, maybe just cause it was so nicely defined. but great progress on the legs still.

felt tempted to render it with GI, you can also see some progress on the hand and on the new remodeled torso. i'll bake in the gi pas in the diffuse texture later on.

miezis
11-03-2007, 08:43 PM
ok, modeling is almos done. needs some touchups here and there and i'll be ready to go low poly and normal map it.

Really nice work, i had not noticed you before, well done! I am not so keen on the colour scheme as i think the metalic red reminds me of a toy tin robot. Try some other colours i think to make it look more intimidating and less like a tin robot. Keep it up and get it done on time. Looking forward to seeing some weaponry.

Kalango
12-03-2007, 08:50 PM
wow man looking cool and shiny :) way cool :)

miezis
13-03-2007, 10:53 AM
here's the low poly one i made yesterday. guys i don't know how you manage to pull of your extra complicated models in those 6k polys. it took me quite a while to reduce it to that amount.
he isn't rigged and doesn't have uv for now - but soooooon his time will come. :)

0202742: i took a look at another monitor and now i know what you meen - colors look waaay to toyish, i'll definately change that.
Kalango: thanks :) i too like shiny stuff!

so, the modeling and normaling this model is finaly done, and i'm quite happy with normal map work. up next rigging and texturing. does anyone know any good and quick rigging tutorial - that's the part i dont know well about this whole 3d stuff. :)

BiG ToE-3DT
16-03-2007, 05:27 PM
not sure of any quick rigging tuts, but when it comes to your see threw wire frame, it's too busy. Do you have a none-see threw option?

0202742
16-03-2007, 08:22 PM
If you are using max make a clone of your model and add a lattice modifier to it, make the texture for the cloned model self illuminating, render and you have a good wireframe image. Either that or use a multi layer shader and have the top layer display wireframe. Normal mapped model looks great by the way, look forward to seeing the texturing, if you do not have a good understanding of rigging i would spare plenty of time for this stage as it takes quite a while to learn and get used to, not to mention the evil skinning stage. Best place to learn it is your programs tutorials or user reference methinks.

BiG ToE-3DT
16-03-2007, 10:29 PM
no need to render out wireframes when showing your wips, screengrabs do the job. Plus they take less time to make.

miezis
17-03-2007, 01:26 PM
thanks guys for the tips, i'll definately try out things that 0202742 advised about wireframe. regarding rigging - i think i'll make a simple sceleton with some IKs and screw around with that a bit longer than go and learn rigging ir 3 days :)

by the way, any rules about using pre-made rigs? lilke free rigs around the web? couldn't find any rule regarding rigs.

and here's yet another coloring experiment in ps. i'll texture my model during this weekend.

thanks for support guys!
and here it is fuly textured model, plus some simple pose with which i think i'll stay. spent all saturday workin on it and i'm happy with the result. now all i have to do is make a weapon and a stand and i'll be ready for WAR! :)
tell me what you think.

rendered with scanline with no advanced lightning, with two lights in the scene [one warm light yellow keylight and one blueish backlight]

19-03-2007, 02:09 AM
Very clean and nice. :) Great work. :)
I like this silver, gold and dark color combination.

miezis
19-03-2007, 10:22 AM
ahh, yes, the weapon...
here it is :) made it yesterday, textures are only half way done [almost no specular and absolutely no glow map yet], but i think i'll finish them today.

it's meant to be part shield generator, part dagger, part pulse cannon, part blunt force jaw crusher :). the weaponyness will be more obvious when i add glow maps. the main reason i made it that way, is because it complements his form and adds to the character. i didn't want to make another unimaginative cannon that looks like beefed up ak-47. so i came up with this shape.

http://img408.imageshack.us/img408/8183/poseweaponms8.jpg

and the weapon by itself

i think i'm gona call it done, any crits? i don't want to go and overdo it as i usually do. finished texturing the weapon and created a glossy map to both character and weapon that now give them that sweet metalic look.

0202742: thanks - that's actually pretty good idea about the aboriginal machine! but i don't think i have the time to go and accent that anymore
DrunkenPuppy, shadowbreeze, Klash120, Kalango, shinja, Agent-X, gridlinked:THAAAANK YOU! :)
taehoon: no, it's 3dsmax all the way. default scanline renderer with two omni lights, that act as a keylight [light yellowish + shadowmap] and backlight [blueish - no shadows]. they act as a classical three point lightning [except that there are only 2 in my case :)]. if you don't know what a 3 point lightning is go here and don't come back untill you read it all: http://www.internetcampus.com/tvp031.htm

Hey man congrats on finishing. You seem to be the first to finish, with a good touch.
Its some very nice work. Well done and good luck man. :)

Out of curiousity. When you submit your entry. Do you just post the required images on your thread ? Or you submit it and sent it to someone else ?

I know its a dumb question but i dont know how it works, cause it does not say on the submission page.

0202742: thanks yet again.
shinja: well, yeah i timed it so i could make it in the 19th march, but since the compeetition was extended for another week i took my time to polish it a bit.
you submit your work by going to your entry page - the one you visited when created your thumbnail. then click on "join now" or "edit entry" [depends weather you've logged in on the game artisans page (it'll guide you there if you haven't)] and the just upload your images one by one and click submit at the bottom.
