After a couple of very trying and tiring weeks (involving the loss of a weeks work on this guy and a load of other personal work when my home PC blue-screened and died, cause still unknown) I have clawed my way back to the where I was a week ago, i.e. the high res mesh almost being complete. I'm fairly sure I won't be able to complete this guy for the dealine now (I haven't even done a concept for his weapon yet) but I will continue on until I can continue no more....
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the high mesh and once I have added a few more details (including all his major pipes, his hands and face around his eyes) I'll quickly knock up a low model and try and at least get the boy normal mapped....
Here's a couple of screen grabs from Silo to show his current state.....

Extremely nice. Love the gears and bolt's feel and those enormous exhaust pipes, you really feel that there is a lot of power in that robot. Head also looks sweet.

Last image for now, a pic of the torso on it's own (you can see where the limbs slot into a self contained ball n' socket type joint)....

I wish.....
Thanks for all the helpful comments and kind words so far....
The next stage for my concept will be a clean up , both of the design itself (gonna simplify some of the details, cos it's just too damn busy for my taste) and the artwork (gotta clean up the messy construction lines and get some colour ideas on there) ....

Lord Rancid
07-02-2007, 05:12 PM
Added some armour pieces (that fit onto attachment points on the arms and legs) and a first pass design of his sword (the idea here is that he can grip the handle set in the blade for thrusting or parrying moves. The blade-handle can even rotate!!!).....

Great style and detail. I'm thinking your biggest struggle is going to be fitting all that detail in with the poly limit. No doubt lots of normal/bump/transparency mapping will be required.

I'll definitely be watching your progress.

Loving this concept, especially the details which all work for me, too many people are adding illogical details to there models without thought. Hope the model is equally impressive. I would like to see some ballistic weaponry also as i worry that it would be likely and easy for the enemy to hide from your tank sized character......can't see anyone taking it out of action.

nice work man. really cool, big clunky...

his head reminds a bit of Al from the manga/anime full metal alchemist.

all the pipes and holes give him a nice machined look. really good stuff this.

Cheers dude.... I've a bit of experience in designing mecha for games and you really need to work out the joints and stuff properly for animation purposes, gott a think those things through....As to the lack of ballistics, I'm working on an idea for a Gun-Sword thing (I know it sounds a bit "Final Fantasy, but I'm confident that it'll suit this bad boy). However I really want this guy to feel more like a heavily armoured knight that just wades into the enemy where they are thickest and unleashes Mecha-Hell on their asses......

Having noticed that there is a similar weapon design on another contestants entry, and even though I posted my idea first, I'm gonna stop with the gun-sword idea..... Instead I'm gonna push forward with a more beserker approach....this guy is an unstoppable machine moving from one war zone to another and wading into the thickest fighting with whatever piece of weaponry he fashions out of scrap metal....concept ideas to follow........

Cheers dude, you've made me smile (with modesty). To be honest though, while I've worked in the games industry for the past 7 years and have created hundreds of textures for various characters, mechs, vehicles etc. this is the first time I've had a go at just "painting" something from scratch (i.e. no original photo source) with just Photoshop and a wacom....It took a while but it's really all just shades of black and white in the end (plus a little red, green, brown, blue etc. etc.).........

ThatDon
19-02-2007, 02:55 AM
hehe, I understand the concept of painting/rendering realistically and the whole point of a underpainting, trust me that comment was nothing more than a pat on the back for a job VERY well done.

BTW you're many years of experience shows in your professionalism, can't say that for some of these other so called "Professionals" that lurk these boards.

Anyways it looks like you're now ready for the fun part...modeling!!!

Very nice, now post some modeling!!!

Gotta get the concepts right first, makes for a much stronger design (I'm sure you'll all agree). To be honest the modeling bit is the bit I'm not looking forward to really...At the moment I'm not doing much drawing or texturing at work so I've been really enjoying those aspects of this competition. I'm not sure how much energy I have for modeling all day at work and then modeling all night at home (and this boy needs a lot of modeling)......

Feeling really burned out right now...Been doing nothing but PSP conversions for the last year and a half, I really miss being able to be creative (the only creative thing left to me now is "creatively" stripping 1000's of polys out of a character and somehow ending up with something that is in someway similar to the original)... This last few weeks I've really been feeling like an artist again (though kinda finding it hard to concentrate on poly stripping during work hours, my head is just full of this competition)....

haha! I'm lucky in that I have managed to convince*(read: trick) my teachers into letting me work on my entry for class work!

PSP Specs sound fun but not poly reduction for it, I'm surprised you don't just create the models from ground up. I would be interested in hearing more about your work stories, if you got time you can contact me with the im info next to my avatar!

Trust me, the PSP is the worst console you'll ever have to work on...Even the old PS1 was nicer in a way (mainly coz you weren't trying to sqeeze stuff from a more powerful machine into it's over-hyped capabilities)... plus PSP projects usually have very short development times becasue they are viewed as conversions (I've worked on 3 in the last 18 months, two of which we completed and one which we're about half way through now) so you really don't have much time or scope for creating new assets and you just gotta get on with what you're given...

Wow. I love your concept.

I can see the War Hammer influence. But in truth, I think you blew away almost anything I have seen from them in a while.
If you can get your final model to look half a good as your concept the competition won’t even know what hit them!

I have to say, I do not envy you working with the PSP. That is one platform I hope to never have to work with.

Keep up the great work, cannot wait to see the 3D.

I just gotta say I love the concept. It's heavy it's cool, it got everything and a bit more you could even say. Also since you've drawn all those units to themselves you ca see how it's constructed and gives others great inspiration.

Best of luck with the modelling and I'll see you on the battlefield! :D

Very nice clean modeling and some great detail. I know that it is influenced by the warhammer model but i find it a bit hard to imagine how it would move well with all that heavy armour, as it looks quite restrictive. I bet you pull off the normal mapping really well. I love the model, and i can't wait to see it complete. Good going.

It's a bit weird, all these Warhammer references I'm getting. Not that I don't agree now that you've all mentionedit, it's just that the original inspiration for this piece came from a suit of armour I designed recently (for a personal project, blending medieval European armour and Japanese samurai armour) and a bad guy from a Power Rangers show...nowhere in my mind was there any thought of Warhammer stuff (or so I thought). I guess a childhood spent immersed in Warhammer 40K games and White Dwarf magazines has indelibly rubbed off on me....Weird, but kinda cool......

Solid work man, very nice modeling. My only concern is the use of the same exhausts in multiple places. TO me it stands out too much because you can tell it's the same ones.

If you have the time, I'd recommend giving them a bit of variations according to each body part.

Good point. I had intended to make the ones on the legs different from the one on the arms (in the concept they are shorter and stubbier) but I used the arm ones as placeholder and then kinda forgot about them as I focused on other parts. But now you've reminded me (and I'm inthe process of doing the pipes for the exhausts) I'll get right on the case. Many thanks....
