3/25 Looks like I'll make it. Tomorrow is face/hair/pose/base day. I'm on Icelandic time so I can stay up late to turn it in, but it will be tight, hehe.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/net/pcount/agust/texture_02.jpg
03/24 This is gonna be close, but here's my progress.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/net/pcount/agust/lolpoly_01.jpg
03/16 Riflol! Nearing the end of the high poly and getting in gear to finish this guy up, glad for the week long extension! The red part of the rifle is going to be done using particles and glow effects to make it look like it's an energy field and not a solid object.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/net/pcount/agust/rifle_hi_01.jpg
03/04 Progress! I need to concept out the hands, as they're just blobs in the sketches, then do his gun high poly and the mudboxy bits for him. His torso is gonna be mudboxed, as is the bandana on his arm.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/net/pcount/agust/hi_poly_04.jpg
03/01 Dang this is taking me too long, HURRY HURRY.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/net/pcount/agust/hi_poly_02.gif
02/28 Getting the high poly done. the chest and torso are going to be the hardest parts coming up.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/net/pcount/agust/hi_poly_01.gif
02/26 Last week was a LAN party (yes a week long), but I'm starting the model. Kind of wondering if it's strong enough to keep going, so I'm doing alternate sketches in my sketchbook to see if I can come up with something better. I did another detail pass to add a little interesting bits, not sure what will stay, and I think I'll add even more later.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/net/pcount/agust/concept_03.jpg
and started blocking in the model really roughly to check basic silhouette.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/net/pcount/agust/blockin_01.jpg
02/19 progress I am working on the rifle design. I'm pretty close to where I want it with the top left design, but I'm still not 100%. The idea is that the barrel itself is an energy field, so the body of the gun is the only solid part.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/net/pcount/agust/rifle_concept_01.jpg
02/11 progress I want to do a back study and concept on his gun before starting the modeling phase.
http://www.poopinmymouth.com/net/pcount/agust/concept_02.jpg
Guess I better finally make a thread. I was thumbnailing for the past two days trying to come up with something to get behind, and finally found something I liked. This is super rough, and I'm getting too far into the rendering without ironing out other details, so it's gonna have some changes for sure, but it at least shows the initial direction. I'm gonna sleep on this one and then do some more stuff tomorrow. I'm here on 3dtotal's side to support Arshlevon in protest against the ridiculous drama over the cat thread. Down with the easily pissed off n00bs of polycount.

Respects! Your concept drawing looks as realistic as a 3D rendering. I realize you don't have the details worked out yet but I like the basic shape. Very original limbs. The legs remind me of those carbon fiber running feet for amputees.
By the way, welcome to 3DT. Good group of folks here. I hope you'll stick around after the Dominance War is over.

This is an a great day for all of Threedy. Ben, you took a break from your travels to hang with Team Threedy.
On a side note, I hope you don't mind but whenever someone has a low poly question, I send them to your site. You got all that and a bag of chips. An update on your last War General would be nice but you being here is good enough for me.

Welcome to Threedy, nice concept, dunno why but it brings Asimov to mind.
I was wondering when and where you would join. :)
You are kind of my "3d mentor" since i have learned basicly everything with the aid of your tutorials.
Now let get some critisism up :)
For one I do not like the "twig" like arms, they look way to fragile right now.
The kickboxing headguard like helmet does not look too "cool" in my opinion. It looks like something from an ancient scifi model to me.
And the lower legs, I can't really figure out how to walk with those. Since the lower leg and the feet look connected and looks like a solid object right now, thus how would one walk on those legs.
Apart from the overall design looks good to me, but it would be helpfull if we had some more background information about this guy. Like what kind of robot he is and what kind of fighting style it has (like close ranged hand to hand combat or combat with firing weapons.)
Anyways keep it up, I really look forward to the final piece. :)

Damn! Heya Ben. I was totally looking forward to crossing swords with you!. Guess we're allies now. :( :grr:
Still, I can't think of many better allies to have. Looking forward to see how this progesses.
I like the design approach so far, kinda reminds me of those new-school false limbs that they give runners: durable, springy and they work. I think you need to make this design a bit more ominous though. Remember part of the judging criteria is down to whether your character can kick some a$$. :D Time to inject some fear-factor.
Welcome aboard!

This is super rough, and I'm getting too far into the rendering without ironing out other details, so it's gonna have some changes for sure, but it at least shows the initial direction. I'm gonna sleep on this one and then do some more stuff tomorrow.
Please, let's all practice reading comprehension. If you followed my thread last year, this is way stronger than the initial sketches I posted for General Delilah, and both the final concept and final model came out fine.
As GraphicDragon and MonteCristo have mentioned, the lower legs are indeed from the prosthetics for sprinters, designed for fast locomotion with zero muscle use needed (for the ankle movement).
Bbox, the upper arms will stay thin, but that's one area I still feel is very weak and I'm going to address in my future sketches. I want to keep the thin profile so that the visual weight stays on the lower arms, but I plan to come up with something that lends more believability and resolves the plain-ness of that area.
To the people thanking me for the tutorials, I appreciate it, but please let's keep this thread about killing polycounters/cgtalk/cgchatters!!

11-02-2007, 04:44 AM
Poop, I have to disagree with you, regardless of how early the concept is it still lacks the bad ass factor and that is going to be a big part of the judging. This thread isn't dedicated for people to show thanks and respect for your tutorials but to crit and help you with your entry.
poopinmymouth
11-02-2007, 05:52 AM
You're certainly free to disagree. I wasn't implying that I'm only welcoming praise from past accomplishments. I was replying to the two posts that essentially said "I don't like it" (which your post echoed). If you have something specific, feel free to address, but at this point I've made it clear this is an initial direction and as such will change as I refine the forms, so "I don't like it as is" are not really valid crits, and I felt it necessary to reiterate that it is a wip.
As far as not having "bad-ass factor" I disagree. I am not going to go down the traditional route, as I've shown with my past entry. If you'd like to make mention of a specific aspect that you dislike, I'll certainly reevaluate that aspect, but I'm not really going to change my direction because some people dislike it. There are plenty of standard fair designs already and I'm doing something different.
I guess I should go on the record to say I'm posting progress because the contest requires it, but I'm not really looking for input on the design or style choices, as I feel confident in being able to pull off a good entry. Input on execution however, is welcome.

I don't think Ben is here to just get thank you notes about his tutorials and stuff you guys and gals have learned from him. As far as people saying they don't like designs well it's art work and not everyone likes the same things in designs. I remember the early Dalilah Sketches and they weren't the best and I actually like this design. When I saw his legs I could tell what they were and it's an early sketch. I can easily see this guy running at speeds of 90-100 mph. Ok maybe not quite that fast but it's his design.
I am not a fan of the arms but you said you are working on those and I know from past stuff you have always finished with good work.
So let's not get gay on our posts and try to offer some crits that are worth a damn rather than. I just don't like it. That doesn't help too much guys. Say why you don't like it and what could help make it better.
Sorry to go on about it too long Ben. Look forward to updates

I think the body is really interesting, it has a very unusual shape and really fits the more subtle shadow side of the brief. But I'd kill the ginger kid! Replace him with hideousness, something freakish like kroenen from hellboy, you're got carte blanche to be as evil and dramatic as you like after all. I'd consider giving him a swiss army knife of interrogation gear as his arm weaponry - electrodes, wires, drills and a rectal whisk.

Definitely diggin' the new feet. That's a nice design. Out of interest, what discipline are you thinking of assigning this guy?
poopinmymouth
12-02-2007, 01:07 PM
Sniper/stealth. I want him to be able to sprint in undetected to a good position, snipe his target, then sprint back out. He's not really one for hand to hand combat, though being a machine, it's a fair bit stronger than an average man.
I'm working on a sniper rifle design that will collapse down and fit in his back. The barrel itself will be made of an energy field, that only appears when the rifle is powered on. I was looking at Biathlon athletes (those are the guys who ski, then shoot), but I didn't like the silhouette break of having the barrel show from the front poking up over the head, hence having to come up with a less conventional weapon.

yo man i am really digging the resolve on the feet. i think i am going to have to echo mr kite ..from a design standpoint i am not feeling the orange hair.. i think making it red like the feet would work and not impose very much on original design, black would also work, me personally i would experiment with white or sliver looking hair, i think it would really make this dude pop casue he is fairly dark overall..also a stripe of white with another color hair like rouge or something could also be neat, but i feel like his hair is clashing with the design of the character currently.
i really love this little dude.

Pedro Toledo
12-02-2007, 10:37 PM
I say he also have something done with his eyes, since he IS a sniper, how about one of the eyes somehow termminator style poping out
Well, actually he could have only one eye... and maybe his right arm could be really short, just enough to reach the trigger... And also he could have a third leg to be more steady, like a tripod!!
Hehe, kidding, keep up the good work :)
Likeing the design more and more :)
I deff. like how you have done the new legs...Are those cushion under his "feet"? :P
The arms looks a little bit stronger as they are right now so thats all good I guess.
About the hair color, deff. not white. Because it is a stealthy char. and white pops out too much imo...No blacks either since the whole char is black and whill make it unintresting imo.
So a little darker of what you have got now would be better.
Some more colors would make it a little more intrestig since it looks like it is still lacking something for me.
Btw, does this guy have any fingers?...I mean this screen shows everything extra dark so I can't see much. If he doesnt have any fingers, how will he operate his rifle? If he does have fingers I guess itt'l be kind of hard using the rifle with his arms right now. I mean the tips of his arm are kind of big to hold a gun with comfort. Unless it is some kind of custom rifle and it looks lke that is going to be the case :)
Thats about all I have to say right now, keep it up :)

Hi ben n well come :)
your concepts is awsome sofar for me cause thought I know how you work, I like all of that laser weapons n more one on the upper right,
mim, :haha:
PS: Edited! sorry about compliments, just I can't kept patient myself, when I see you her buddy! :o
I like the top right one also. Because it fits the overall design better imo, like the dude got allot of rounded parts.
Tho' I would decrease the size of the the barrel...I did a quick search on google and found that they arent as big as yours... And maybe increase the size of the scope so it could kill from a further away distance than it could with a normal sniper or something...
Does the top left one have a laser?... Why would he need a laser?...
Oh! One more thing.. Will this guy have a handgun or anything in that direction? Just in case if the enemy is close?
MonteCristo

Top Right feels the most in line with his overall design. The design of the barrel feels as if it could pack a heavier punch than the others.

That of course is the problem with competitions. But then take heart from the panel of judges as displayed on the main DW site. If they think the concept is strong, subtle or not, I'm sure they'll give it credit. :) Your call though of course. I'm still really digging the feet by the way. they feel "designed", which is a good thing.

Coming along nicely, you traitorous cur, you.
His feet look a little on the weak side though. Perhaps adding a shock absorber running from shin or ankle to where the toe bends up would make them feel a bit less like they're going to break off if he gets above a gentle stroll.

This is looking pretty awesome. I can't say I'm particularly fond of the legs...the design looks kind of 'lazy'....as though you could have fleshed them out more and put a bit more thought into them. But don't get me wrong, its still tight. It oughta be great when its finished

Great model the only thing that really concerns me about it is that although i am sure that most people like myself will love it, i think that people might think it looks friendly which i don't think is particularly suitable for the genre. Hope you get it done on time as i would love to see it complete. Good going.

Hey Ben,
Good job finishing up your entry!
I think your work translates the best from high-poly to low-poly model. I can see you planned your low plygon model very carefully to maximize the normal map usage. Something 3D artists in the gaming industry should all learn.
Congrats for finishing this race Ben! ;) You’re a winner man all the ways! :)

When I first saw the concept art I almost died laughing and thought you had lost your mind! Though throughout the comp I’ve been watching the progress and I have to say it turned out pretty cool all things considered. He looks like he needs a bit more polish in certain areas but all in all cool work; he definitely earns points for originality!
