OK, here's what happened. I'm using max 5, and doing incrememntal saves of my scene as I animate the different sections. Now I have spent all day animating this one section, I got it just perfect, so I set the timeline to the whole animation (not just the section I'm working on).

Somehow, maybe I've turned the animate button off by accident, I don't really know. But now everyhting BEFORE the section I've been working on is totally screwed up and unuseabe. Thankfully I still have the stuff from before the current section in a previous file.

I am hoping there is some way to just merge the animation from the first range into the second file, but keep the animation from the second range.

I tried "merge animation", but this seems not to have any effect at all for some wierd reason. I looked up the help, but that wasn't any use either.

Please help me, there has to be some way... :(

hmmm

merge animation should work ok for it. however if you're seeing keys just pop up for no reason that's a known bug for max 5 called mystery keys, i don't wanna get into it, long discussion, but if you go to discreet forums they have explored it pretty in depth.

as for merging the animations. i'd think the merge animation solution should work but if it doesn't you might try copying and pasting the keys after you merge it back into the scene. i think this might work though i have not tested it thoroughly, also it can be a pain if there's a ton of keys on a ton of objects.

good luck

well, for some reason using the animation megre feature didnt work pasting the second scene after the first, but I tried it the other way round (pasting the first before the second) and it worked - for the most part.

For some reason I ended up with the bones working, plus a duplicate skeleton with only half the animation. Also the skin and eyes were flipping out everywhere, so I deleted them, merged them from an older (non-animated) version and reattatched them to the bones, and now finally everything is working great :D

I just gotta say that max is the most temperamental program I ever had the headache of being on its bad side :(
