i think if you look under someone's profile button after their post you'll see if they use any chat programs and the necessary info to contact them.

But I guess Artist wants to find friends who'd agree to chat.
I don't know about you, but I don't like when some (which I don't know, nor have heard of) messages me with jokes... By providing my aim at a thread like this one I'd atleast know that I might be messaged by the person (and know where he got my aim...).
