I wanted to know what you guys prefer... Softimage or 3ds max...
Most of you here use 3ds max so you guys would probably pick that but I also wanted to know which one gives better results, and if softimage gives good results.
Thanks all

Downup, if you read his post he says "softimage" - surely you've heard of that?
Anyway, I have no experience with SI, only max so I can't really comment, & I doubt many people on these boards will have had enough experience with both to be able to compare, but I'm willing to be proved wrong.

The results?.. I'd say the same results can be achieved with both apps. It just depends on your liking and to what level you're fammiliar with the app. :)
Speaking of power, I have an opinion that Most apps are equal (yes, some free self-made apps can't compete with the giants too much). It's just that one app is a bit better at rigging, the other - at rendering, the third - modelling... And so on.
Please correct me where I'm wrong.

It all basically depends on which software u r comfortable with. Softimage has got other stuff like fur, etc which max does not. And also a project is more organised in Softimage, like when a project is created, u have seperate folders for textures, models, etc. So everything related to that project is stored there!

And don't forget softimage comes with mental Ray!
Never used it though :) XSI that is.
Didn't they recently put a fully functional free version online?

I have that free XSI version SI was releasing..only you have to use it at 1600X something..so I always have to change my screen resolution.
In my opinion both will model :) and both will acheive equally great results. You need to just work with them and see which one you prefer. I like MAX and I am sticking with MAX. acutally...I use MAYA for heads, and Max for everything else :) Maya, makes head modeling sooo much easier :) the power of a box is unleashed in MAYA! for heads that is...and the power of the box is unleashed in max for bodies etc...and the power of the box is unleashed in XSI...for..uh..something cause I dont use it much :)

Yes but I don't see why it's a bad thing. All lower versions of Windows seriously suck !

seriously, we went from 95 to 2000 prof, and then only 2 months ago went to XP prof, and 2000/xp rock any other windows world...so i think what they did was good. have the most stable OS to run a good program.

Yeah, 1600 or up, I think it was. That was REALLY bugging me. I have a 17 inch monitor. My resolution is 1152x864 and that is fine for me, but 1600x1200 is too high. It hurts my eyes. I have a really good NEC XP17 and it can handle it just fine, but I do not like it. I do not understand why XSI has to run at such exact resolutions.

seriously, I dont even notice much difference, in as you say "exactness" anyways, maybe it is hurting your eyes because your forgot to up your refresh rate again, when you up res, or lower it, it put the RF back to it minimum, I usually have mine running at it highest. or is it hurting your eyes cause its too small...you can also, have windows display LARGE ICONS when you have it that small..
yeah XSI is dumb that way, maybe they were thinkign only movie companies, would download a free version??? and run it on like 21 inch monitors...i am pretty sure movie companies BUY software and dont deal with free ones..
anyways, is the non-free SI run at 1600? or is that just the free one.?

I think it's on both versions.

Yeah XSI 3.0 needs high res, I'm sure it's what was mentioned before of studios and giant monitors.
XSI is very cool but I just couldn't justify to myself relearning the basics, it would have taken me months just get back to my rudimentary skills I've got in max so I'll stick it out for now, but if your just starting I'd suggest getting into XSI. From what I used of XSI it seemed alot more like Maya, so maybe a Maya>XSI switch would be easier than from Max.
It also hurt my eyes to use the higher res but even Max is easier to use in high res, the larger viewport work area is worth the pain sometimes.

like I said above, are you sure your re-setting your Refresh rate back up? or is it just the smalleness of the font etc? you can have windows display LARGE IMAGES which makes everything bigger, and it wont "hurt" as much.
