This is supposed to be a quick strike sneak attack assassin unit that can also double as a reconnaissance. It can leap great distances do to powerful hind legs and wings that help it glide. It’s main attack is a lighting fast impaling strike. It’s lower fuselage is interchangeable to suit what ever type of mission it is going on. For instance if it was equipped with a reconnaissance attachment it would have larger wings and extra fuel cells and a stronger hydraulics chip for the back legs so that it could travel further distances. The assassin attachment version has a built in self destruct nuclear bomb for suicide runs. The weakness of this unit is it’s a terrible melee unit do to light armor. To make up for this it is equipped with a cloaking antenna that makes them virtually invisible when not moving. Besides reconnaissance missions they usually travel in packs of ten and are known for being masters of ambushing.

Here is the low res version of the main torso ( 1000 tris ). I am shooting for 5k total and then I will go back with the final 1K to add additional detailed final touches. I will make the high res version of each piece once all the low res versions are complete.

From the concepts i do not believe this has any ranged weapons, which lets it down i think, i suggest using the extra 1k we have for weapons to change this so it has more than two forms of attack. Think how dangerous it would be in an ambush situation with guns, people would not see it and would walk straight into it's line of view. Looks great so far keep it up.
Maybe a gun at the end to the blade, so when the arms are back it can shoot with them. . . or make the blade swords and add hands so a gun could be used. . . Either way, I still really like where you are going with this one George, even without a ranged attack.

I can't really say I'm much of a fan of the whole big bug thing...especially since it so closely resembles a real bug. I think you should change the head to dull-down the close resemlence... plus the mantis head looks a little silly to me (I find mantises in general to be rather silly-looking creatures)
But, I do really dig where you're going with the model so far. Its shaping up rather nicely

Thanks for the encouragement. As for the gun thing I wanted to steer away from anything BFG style as I have plans for a possible rocket launcher on its back for long range. I am also figuring on adding some sort of spore on the redesign of the head that sprays acid and for short range attack to compound the scythes. For medium range I will probably do laser eyes or a laser shoulder mount. If you look at the knees you will see an opening that I shaded in yellow. This is another mid range attack dual flame throwers! Hehe… :D

Yeah, now that head is much better. You could still tweak it some and push the proportions more. Maybe get the "hair" part bigger....think Vegeta from Dragon Ball. Vertical mouths are generally not recommended.... they usually end up strongly resembling a certain female body part.
This character is shaping up very nicely. Now lets see some textures.

Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I really need to make a model sheet there is so much about my character that needs explanation. The hair is actually not hair most of the head is metal and that rear part is more of an antenna which helps it go camouflage. There is also a glass part of an opening that will show either a brain or matrix style script still debating on that.
LOL, the minute you said what you said about vertical mouths now all I can do is think that’s what it looks like… haha… It’s actually not a vertical mouth though it’s really two tubes that get larger as then move down. Think Star Wars Tie Fighter Pilotish. I can see how you would think that though my drawing is pretty rough. I still got two more parts to model before I UV map and then I have to make the highres version before I start texturing but I might texture as I complete each normal map. Still trying to figure out my color palette, this is where I think I want to go with it.

I love the way this is going, being perfectly honest the details look like they have no use to the machine but look good anyway. Low poly looks nicely optimized and the whole model looks great, especially when looking at it in whole. Looks like a mean polycount eating mofo.

Thanks I appreciate the feedback. I agree with you 100% details really do look rather purposeless right now. There is actually some function to them all but I don’t think they will be apparent till I actually color this and then still some of the things might not really be understandable. However I was trying to go for a more unorthodox look for this because we tend to fear things we know less about and I wanted that kind of mood for this. If I can get this done with one day to spare I will do a full blown out character sheet explaining everything for anyone who is interested. Hopefully I can finish up the normal mapping soon and start coloring. Cheers!

I totally agree with you the unorthadox look will instill more fear into the enemy, i would love to see this character sheet if you get it done on time, add it to this thread after the comp if you can't get it done on time as i for one would be most interested to see it. Good luck with the colouring, any idea what colour scheme you are going to go for yet?

Normal map looks great well done. I would like to see some yellow in the colour map if that is possible.
I think this is looking good. Why not making an extensive use of all the colors of the palette though? :)

Not my best texture work cause I am kind of rushing it but ehh it’s not terrible. I am going with a camouflage look which is harder to pull off than I thought but I love the challenge. I am sure when once I make my other maps things will blend much better. Spirit energy is looking pretty sweet though and I have not added an incandescence map to it yet so that’s one positive thing, hehe…

There is some hints of yellow in the camouflage but not much.

The past images I posted were without any color maps just colored shaders for me to get an idea of where I wanted to go with it. I’ll be making much more extensive use now as I am sure you will see. ;)

Thanks, I tired my best to give it my all. Had to balance allot of other things that were going on but overall my results were acceptable. It definitely was a time management challenge. There were a lot of great entries on here that were positive motivators for me, including Team Bigun. ;)
