Hi guys,
Please take a look at my WIP. Sorry for this rough sketch I just really have no time to make something more accurate.

I can work only on weekends so I have to do everything very fast ;P
Here is what I’ve done during last two days:

A lot of late starters, it seems! Welcome to the machine army
I like the design asthetic, and i understand the thin legs as part of that, but they don't look like they can support him, plus he needs some feet. As for colors, i like the third one best (the grey/red lights one).
Good luck! :)

Some quick ideas about possible colors.
This is really cool!!! I think I'd go with the middle colour scheme (but I kinda like the left one too for claasic 80's anime style)......

Call me corny but I like the last one, black and red darkstar XD

the first thing that popped into my mind when seeing your white-purple dude was: FREIZA!! :D:D
hehe, sorry bout that. i also really like the dark one. black and red just go good together.
tho the freiza-scheme looks really nice, the dark ones are cool aswell, tough call as to which one is better ...

In terms of the design, I like it allot. Although I personally would like to see more funtional than cool crazy designs. I feel that if this character would to step onto soft soil, he's sink right in. support for his weight iwll be an issue.
Other than that, I'd say it looking very nice and you're on the right track.
I also like the third color choice. Just becareful that you don't loose details if the values are too similar.
Keep up the good work.
I like second and third versions, really nice design!

The design looks great man, I like the chest area more, keep it up:)

the only thing I would revisit would be the shoulder pads, they look like simple spheres with subtle detail, you have tons of polys to use to break away from that simple primitive form. Also the feet, they look very unnatural, try them with no bow, you might like it better.
The rest is great, love the face mask and the chest detail

This looks very nice i like it, it reminds a little bit of the Predator :)

Yeah, it looks really cool, and very Predator-ish (which imo is a good thing)!
this thing is looking hot!! not sure the rust is working for me...i think the detail would look better with out it. The detail is very busy(in a good way) and the rust may make it a bit too busy. Mostly the upper body. Well its looking good man well done!

I really do like the overall design element of your character.
I do like to hear your thoughts behind the choice make it in current proportion that is very close to human figure.
Especially the pointy bipedal legs.
Torokun
10-03-2007, 12:18 PM
I think the reason the rust looks a bit out of place is because the rest of the paint on the body looks too new to have partial rust happening. If you want to keep the rust, the rest of the paint on the body of the character shold look way more aged.
Other solution is to have the peeled paints instead of the rust.
regardless, I still like the design a lot.

Hi guys,
Thanks a lot for your feedback and suggestions.
goat-3DT – probably you are right about this rust. That’s just a first iteration of texture and I am going to polish it later. I just want to concentrate on weapon now because it’s still almost untouched
Torokun – I think these proportions are result of my intention to keep some links with human being. In terms of feelings I want to make a combination of usual and weird things that’s why I decided to make these thin and unnatural legs. The other reason I made legs so thin is that I expected that a lot of guys will make their characters with balky legs and arms so I decided to make something different

Looking great. Strong resemblence to the predator around the head region which is very cool. Looking forward to seeing it's weaponry. I hope you can get it done on time.

Great stuff Artling! I prefer the darker version, i think it suits the composition better. Although some of the darker details get a hard to see or a bit lost, overall the character pops out more, while in the lighter version you can see his silhouette better, but the bright sky distracts a lot from the bot.

only thing I dont like is the fact he has no feet, so soft soil or a sewer drain and his foot gets stuck and down he goes, I think that part needs work, other then that, amazing!

what texture size did you go with? Looks a bit off at the moment.
redonix76
16-03-2007, 11:17 PM
looks like two 1024's for the character and four 512's for the gun. Plenty of room for extras.
I think for the rust, there should be a but more damaged marks and such to accompany the rust stains so that it doesn't look like it was just smeared on. Also color verriations on the rusts and the edges of the rust will help sell it better.
Looks good man.

to me, it looks like (1) 256 by 512 for the gun, and I have no idea what the character map is. I say that because it looks way too long. if the character map was squared, it would be a square map. But it looks a bit stretched.
I understand there is two seperate textures, I'm just talking about the charaters texture map. Not the gun.
redonix76

I think it does look off, but I was curious so I copy and pasted it into photoshop...the character texture is 360x360 from the post, so it's actauly a perfect square, so I'm guessing it's probably 1024.

The colors remind me combine soldiers from HalfLife 2. Nice work.
may be choose something average between light and dark, for more detach character from background?..

Miezis, EvilKnight – Hmm… thanks for comment but I should say that when people are saying that this character reminds them Predator or Gundum or Combine soldiers it’s much more motivating and helpful :)
About texture resolution. I have 3 textures (Diffuse, Normal and Specular) 2048x2048 for character and 3 textures (the same channels) 1024x512 for weapon. I just quickly scale them down to put them here because I can’t post big images.
BiG ToE-3DT
19-03-2007, 06:57 AM
good, good, good. I just wanted to make sure you used the 2048, instead of something else. Althought you wasted space with the 1024/512 on the weapon, but thats just me.

Ur... I thought we can't put any images (or effects) as a background on the final pose shot?
Isn't that allowed only on the beauty shot?
BiG ToE-3DT

effects and whatnot are only allowed for the winning pose/final pose.
The beauty shot is the one with no effects, just the model.

emmm... no, its the other way round... copied from submisions page:
Winning Pose Shot
- Dimensions: 800w x 900h pixels - 200k file size
- This image can only have "One" pose of your character. No multiple shots or different angles. Just one! Additionally, you must include a stand but you can not include a large background scene. Example, your character can rest on a pedestal, but he can "not" have a war scene with explosions and background characters behind him.
Beauty shot of your character
- Dimensions: 800w x 900h pixels - 200k file size
- Feel free to put multiple angles of your character or just one big version or your character on this page. You can include background characters, environments, effects.. basically, anything goes here.

I'm checking on the background image thing now. I'll post a sticky thread with the answer so everyone will know. Keep your eyes open for it.

This image is allowed. The background is just a wall with a little gradient and graininess applied to it. It's actually fairly simple. For the stand, this is ok too. People are allowed complex stands.
However, Artling, please consider loosing the wall behind your character. It's making him look small and it looks wrong to boot. The wall looks like it is right up against his back and there is no space between him and the wall. Furthermore, if you look at the pedestal, the details are small, suggesting the guy is big, but the wall's details are big making your guy look small:p If I were you, I would loose the wall entirely. Simple blackness or mist would open up your space more and let the viewers focus on your great character and pedestal without feeling clusterphobic. Otherwise, great work man! He came out great!
