View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge 142 & 143 - Jack in the box

Marty_McFly-3DT
22-03-2007, 02:30 AM
1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 4th of April 2007
Subject - Jack in the box

Jack in the box: A jack-in-the-box is a children's toy that consists of a box with a crank. When the crank is turned, it plays out a melody, often Pop Goes the Weasel. At the end of the tune, the lid pops open and a figure of some sort, usually a clown, pops out of the box. Of course, I was a little literal in my translation of the term... but... that's just me. :smug:

Have Fun and Good Luck!

Hmmm interesting idea Marty, very nice starter, great render too.

I see you opted for a basic item to pop out, i'm wondering if anyone will be able to model a decent head in time, and maybe not spend too much time on the box or vise versa.

This'll need careful researching, trying to find a mix of what looks good and what can actually be modelled in the 60 mins.

I like the idea though, I hope that we'll get just as many participating as the recent challenges have been.

Good luck to all who enter.

Now i'm off to google :)

Kind Regards

I dunno if we are gonna have so much participants as in the last one, because for doing something decent its needed a good concentration on what ur doing... though i hope im wrong, or else i wont be able to post an entry...

He he I must my having a "Thicky" day because I didn't even notice until you said lol, Doh! it's so obvious too lol :)

I've got a brilliant idea, i'm drawing up the proportions and how i'm going to model it right now, and I reckon i'll be able to pull it off if I keep it fairly low res, i'm gonna do a Spongebob Squarepants Jack In The Box, looks like a cool character to try and model, and i'll probably put some sea shells on the box, I must try to figure out how to model sea sheels before I start though, otherwise my 60 mins will be gone before I start :)

Agree with Diabolos! When I saw the title, first thought was that this ones gonna be a 90 min challange. :<
But of course this has a right side too. I`ll have to find less free time to take part in this challange :)

Not An Entry

This is how far I got in an hour, but in my defense I wasted a lot of time trying to make Box Joints, as you can see in the picture, only to find out that you can't even tell in a plain render :wall:, the hinges also took some time, but next time I'm gonna do a little research and I hope to be able to get at least on entry submitted.

Yeah, I knew that some people would not care for the time limit. But that is why it is a Speed Modeling Challenge. ;) Just plan things out ahead of time, and you'll see that the time isn't really all that bad.

Luckily that's exactly what I've done here :)!

This was over 2 hours planning, sketching, measuring up things, and thinking about how I could make this in the time, however once i'd finished Spongebob, there was only about 18 mins left for anything else, so apologies for the box and the handle itself, it's a little crude, but even with all of my planning, I spent far too much time on Spongebob. Luckily though he was modelled with a symmetry object right up until the last moment, then I had some problems and I had to make the null editable at the geometry all became one. I'm fairly happy with the model, i'd like to have posed the legs and the arms a little better, and added much more detailing to the box, but I always count this as my starter, like Marty this is almost like a trial run before I go for proper entries lol, although I still want this entry to be eligable :) Oh yeah the seashells are my feeble attempt at making the box resemble the sea that Spongbob lives in..........ah well I tried.

I hope you like

2nd entry from me then. I'd thought about making an animal head and this bunny (that's what it's meant to look like lol :)) came to me, and I thought i'd give it a go, i'm not very happy with the box again or the ears of the bunny, mainly because I didn't have enough time left to sort them out. I took my time with this one aswell, I think it's because I'm tired so it's not come out as well as I'd hoped. On the wireframe screengrab you'll see a slight purple curve that's a ben deformer for the spring thingy. And I'd opted out of modelling the handle this time too, I thought it'd be the type of box that has a lid with a safety catch and then you open the lid and the bunny jumps out. Oh well, it's rubbish I know, but I thought i'd submit it anyway :blah:

Anyway, there's some great entries coming in, especially eewartti, your's looks like Wallace from Aardman Animation's Nick Park's creation Wallace & Gromit :)

Here the composite anyway, so it looks a bit poor.

Hello Every1,

for the ppl who don't know me, I'm 'Inspired', a wonderful ( ) Guy from the Netherlands. I used to visit Threedy every day, a couple of months ago, but i left for quite a long time! I'm still VERY busy (the main reason why i didn't visited threedy anymore). This was the first time in weeeeeeeks that i took a shot at doing 3d... and I have to say, i liked it very much! I hope i don't get addicted (AGAIN) because busy times are coming to town ;)

well, for the people who DO know, or knew me... I'm kinda back this time! I hope to join in once in a while, and surprise the ppl around here  Well, at least I just try to join in once in a while...

I hope to see some ppl from the 'Old Times' compete aswell ;)

Thad - Nice entries! Like ur first one the best! You have a nice happy style of using colors! keep it up!

DT_art - Nice one, keep it up!

iro-bot3 - Whehe, cool entry! Love the wood. The glove looks kinda low-poly to me, considering u had 20 mins of modeling left! I'm absolutely NOT saying it isn't good, but maybe u could've pushed it up a little ;) Oh, and welcome to the boards ;)

Eetwartti - Nice one!

VersionThirst - Thats pretty cool! Really love the lighting!

ursiNMC - Cute! Nice modeling!

ClassicGamer - Hey man! Love your entries! You model pretty good! Looking forward to see more of you the this (and the following) week(s)!

Diabolos - Hey! Thanx man! Nice to see you are still around! But where is your entry man ;) Oh, and i don't pick at Marty anymore

RefeeZ - Hey man, thnx for the welcome ;) and about the getting familiar with eachother thing. Its just how it growed and was in the first weeks, to keep the atmosphere kinda open and nice. IMO the chatting, and fooling around was one of the nicest things of this competitions! Hey guys, i dont know if any of you know me, i've been around for quite some time, i just dont participate enough. I've decided to get back into 3d and hopefully you'll be seeing entries from me for many weeks to come. i though i'd start off with my comments.

okay, here we go...

Marty - Nice starter, very simple and clean render. clever too :p

Thad - #1 - I love it :) I'm a pretty big video game fan, and that goomba model looks great!
#2 - Again, i'm a pretty big Simpsons fan, and i have seen that episode a few times. The box is very simple, but the material looks great on it. good job with homer as well :)

CG - #1 - it looks awesome. which is pretty much standard with you each week :p. i love the crank. although i'm having a hard time deciding whether or not it fits in the box :hmm:
#2 - cute bunny :) the only thing i can say is that the ears appear to be detatched from the head, which in my opinion makes it look like they are just sitting there about to fall off.

DT_art - very simple, i like it. but again, i don't think the head will fit through that little hole.

iro-bot3 - very nice modeling on the glove. i love the textures on the box. but again, theres no way that glove will fit into that little space you have left it.

RefeeZ - interesting little character :) textures are simple, and the render looks very nice. but why is there a difference between the render and the model? also, unless the rules have changed, i'm pretty sure your not allowed to post a rendered wire. you have to take a screenshot from the viewport. you might want to fix that before you get disqualified :p

Beef33 - While i was doing research on google, i found that guy. hes the mascot for the Jack in the box fast food restaurants no? clever as well :)

last - i like this one alot. i was thinking of something scary to pop out out. your model looks great! and the materials are very nice as well.

Havok2925 - i must first say, I too am a fellow FIRSTer, of team 1503. im glad there are other FIRSTers on this forum :) i think your model is very simple. and kind of plain. it looks like you've put more work into the box, which is very dark and i can hardly even make out those details. next time try to focus your time more on things that are a little more visible. and again, i'm having a hard time deciding whether or not it would fit.

Eetwartti - this looks very nice. clean modeling and a very nice looking render. i agree with CG it does look like Wallace from Wallace and gromit.

cubanboy - I like that model. but again i don't think it would fit in the box properly.

VersionThirst - Thats a beautiful jack-o-lantern model. great work :)

UrsiNMC - i think that is awesome! nice modeling :) the render looks great.

Inspired - i remember you from a ways back. great model and awesome idea.

H2O - you know i had that exact same idea. i made one attempt at it. but i couldn't get his face as i'm no good with organics. i think you nailed it. awesome model, i'd say this one is my favourite so far.

okay. and with that said, its off to work on my first entry for this week.

Thanks alot, about my first entry I'd agree I think it might not fit into the box, but he is a sponge so my excuse would be that he's spongy and could be squashed into the box lol that's my excuse and i'm sticking to it lol :)

Entry 2, you're exaclty right about the ears, i'd tried making the ears part of the base mesh, but then decided to model the ears separatly, and admitadly they looks like they might fall off, i'm not too happy with the entry actually but the face looked good and so I thought i'd submit it anyway :)

Thanks for your kind words anyways and I hope to see loads from yourself too.

Great entries so far.

Inspired: I love your idea of a jack in the box in a box in a box in a box.

nph_assassin: I thought your stab in a box was funny, nice clean modeling too; render was kinda dark on my monitor though.

I don't know how much it qualifies as a jack in the box, but my second entry sure gives you a surprise after a few cranks of the handle. Enjoy.

hello ppl of the boards, hows it going ;)?

ClassicGamer - 'your the king when it comes to machinery modelling' Aahw man, you're making me blush  ! And the windmill-challenge was a very short, one-timer comeback for me! I'm gonna stay a little while longer now!

H2O - Ah, you're still around aswell huh ;)! Nice to see you're still here man! Oh, and that entry is VERY cool! Love the dark feeling it has to it!

frost000 - thnx dude!

Rookie - Yeah! Ur still around huh ;) Thnx man!

Honki - Thnx.. its still addicting huh ;) Cool to see u're still around!

the_bully - Another one from the (very) old days... How are you doing man? Cool to see you here!

nph_assasin - Thats pretty cool, was working on a idea like that myself actually :p Love the textures you have there!

VersionThirst - Thanx man! Really love your entry, its done pretty good!

Boomstik - First of all, welcome to the boards! I hope (and know) that you are going to have a great time here! I like your entry, I've never succeeded in making hair-like things... But you actually did! Like the idea, and the entry itself! Be sure to stick around!

Marty - Do you know what a Jack in the box is? Whehe, still the old Marty that i know huh ;) whahahahahaha!

migelowsky - Thats pretty good! Love the fur!

Well ppl, im first off to finish my Portfolio (not 3D, graphic design...) I'm going to Arnhem friday to try to get on an artschool, to study Graphical Design! but when i'm finished with my portfolio, i'm gonna model my latest idea! Wish me luck, I'll need it...!

Here's my secod entry, but I've got a question about it: does modifying fur and hair count as modelling or texturing? My modelling time was 55 minutes, but messing with the fur took about 15 minutes... So if it counts as modelling, I've exceeded the time limit.. Well, here it is anyway:

modelling (3dsmax 9) - 55 minutes
materials & scene setup - 30 minutes + 15 minutes for the fur...
render (VRay) - 10 minutes

You're right, there is nothing in the rules that specifically bans "off color" posts. The only thing we ask is that people use their best judgment when making entries. I haven't gone through all the entries yet, but if I find something inappropriate... it will be removed. We just try to keep things family friendly, so as long as it's not offensive for all ages... I have no problems with it. :)

Ya, great little freakshow - I managed to dig up some information on it - pay special attention to the date (wow!)

"ORLANDO, FLA (July 21, 1998) -- A clown so realistic you can smell the face paint, a coy little girl that morphs into a hideous creature, and a bizarre, little man with seventeen arms made of money, are a few of the characters encountered in Bingo. Created and developed by Chris Landreth, Bingo has been selected as the grand finale of the Electronic Theater at SIGGRAPH '98. Developed concurrently with MayaTM, Alias|Wavefront's ground-breaking 3D animation and special effects software, one of the goals of this in-house production was to rigorously test the software to ensure that it could satisfy the most demanding and innovative of creative endeavors.

"Bingo is like no other production both in terms of the artistic content and the process for creating it," explains Landreth. "Bingo and Maya were basically developed in tandem which was challenging and exciting. The fact that Alias|Wavefront would support a project of this scope is a testament to its commitment to creating the best tools for artists."

Bingo is a five-minute computer animated adaptation of a live theater performance called Disregard This Play which was first produced in Chicago in 1993 by Greg Kotis of the Neo-Futurists theater company. The recorded audio performance of this play is used in Bingo, which incorporates exciting and bizarre visual imagery to support the telling of the story. Landreth is a senior animator at Alias|Wavefront who in 1995 was nominated for an Academy Award for his animation, the end. With Bingo, Landreth introduces a cast of animated characters who are alternately, shockingly human-like and disturbingly freakish."

since Maya was officially released in 1998, Bingo is probably the first large project to be created with the software - wow - that's some history :)
