Please read the Instructions Guidelines and FAQ's (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754) for this challenge first.

Here we go with this months challenge which is designed to be fun, creative and not too intensive whilst giving best entrants prizes and great exposure in 3DCreative Magazine.

This month we go scrambling the undergrowth for some tasty treats! The Anteater...

Hi, this is my first post on this forum. I'll try to model some kind of anteater knight and try to use this challenge as an excuse to familiarise myself with Max's hair and fur plugin. The modelling will be done in anim8or simply because this is the only modelling tool I'm comfortable with right now.

Here's what I got so far...still roughing out the basic shape as I go along as you can see

mim Thanks for the comment, I've finished rigging my entry now gonna work on a final set-up and look for him.

On a side question does anyone know if I apply a hair modifier in max on top of a skin modifier and then pose the character will the hair move along with the mesh or will the guides for the hair mess up if I re-pose the character?

tanks Shahin_fj,
Hi everyone, this is my first post here.
I´ll be working on "The Pied Piper" ("Hamelin flute player") concept, based of course, on the anteater´s snout shape wich I imagined as a flute.
I hope you like it, this is the Chara Design, there will be ants following him.
Critics wellcomed.

Hello everyone,
I have visited this forums for a long time so I decided it's time to register myself over here. I don't really have any modelling experience so I probably won't be able to complete my model before the deadline. Anyway, here is what I made so far:

Now I still need to figure out how to texture this guy, how to properly use meshsmooth and what I'm going to do with him, but I've seen some great tutorials at this site so I hope I'll be able to figure it out soon enough. I must say there are some great entries so far. Good luck to everyone, completing your ideas ^-^.

Siege: I really like your work so far, its very amusing.
vincentzaraek: I really like your concept, and your work is very solid so far!

On a side note I have a small snag i was hoping someone here could help me with. I'm using 3ds max hair and fur modifier for the first time and Ive gone through a few tutorials on how to style it and shape it so now I have the hair how i want it however I cant seem to figure out how to intermix colors within the hair to say add stripes or bands of different colored hairs. Do I need to do these sections with separate hair modifiers or is there a way to control the colors of the hairs in certain sections while just using one modifier?

Shahin_fj
13-04-2007, 11:50 AM
Hi evolution, you can use map instead of hair color. It's so simple & UV Coordinates are the same as the object you grew the hair on it...& remember to render the hair as geometry instead of buffer, it takes more time but the result is so different.
Good luck.

@Ben-3DT: I've always wanted to have one of those training CD's because they look like a really good resource to become a better 3D artist, but I can't afford it and I'm also not allowed to buy things over the internet (yet).

Today I worked on the overall scene and I worked out an idea about what the "joke/funny thing" should be. First of all I wanted to use some of the famous characteristics of anteaters being: the special shape of the head, the extremelly long tongue and the fluffy tail. As for the style of the scene, I was aiming for an unrealistic, and comedy like style, bright colours and smooth shapes. I chose this because it would suit the joke-like scene better. Now about the scene itself. I made the ant-eater himself look quite slow and unhandy so that it would look like he could never chase an ant in order to catch it. That's why he is using his long tongue to chase the ant, who is running away with a scared look on his face. Anyway, here is a quick render:
http://www.jt-productions.be/jelleye_temp/portfolio/afbeeldingen/StyledAnimalCompetition_Anteater_Scene.gif
The final render will be more high-quality, but this one is just for showing the development, so I saved it in GIF compression to reduce loading times on this forum ^-^". I'm still having quite some problems though. You might notice some errors in the mesh, that's because I'm not really sure how to use the rigging system and the skin modifier xP. I also can't get the texure on the ant-eater to look right. As you can see the texture looks stretched on the legs and normal on the back/tail. I also wanted to give him some nice eyes but that doesn't seem to be easy either xP. I'll just continue experimenting with all buttons and sliders until it looks right. As for the mountains in the background and the sun/cloud I'm quite happy. They look exactly as they were meant to be. That's it for now. Once more, good luck to all of you ^-^.

Thanks ^-^. Lol, I didn't know that, but it sure sounds cool. I've heard of the magazine before though. It'll probably help me a lot. Thanks once more :).

EDIT: I think I'm done with my render. I still made some final changes to the scene, adding some more scenery, I rendered everything and I made a slight bit of post-productional changes.

I don't know what to say, ... it's just amazing, koek! I suggest to put your concept sketch in conceptart forums for 2D challenge too!

@Koek: It would be great indeed, if you could transfer that expression to your 3D model.

@mr_lemmon: Thanks for the tip, I'll try adjusting the contrast a bit in order to make it clearer.

EDIT: I started working at a new model because I'm not really that happy with the one I have made right now and because the actual anteater himself doesn't seem to be the "central" theme of the scene. My new model will still be in an unrealistic style but I'll try focussing more on that model instead of on the scenary ^-^".

I'm late at concept this turn 'coz I was too confused with such a multi-featured character as too where in fit it. I tried several cocepts but they seemed to be either already used in previous Challenges or too much time taking
So I decided to keep it for what it is named as it can be lot funny at basics too
I'm trying it to keep it simple and funny hope u ppl like it

jelleye : I can't figure out any eyes or ears on Anteater in your final render
I hope u modeled them
A piece of advice from me if u wish to take it, this Render looks more highlighting ANT than the ANTEater, it seems like the Challenge is for Ant instead of Anteaters (nice idea for following challenges try Ant at one :))
So it would be more justified if you Highlight Anteater much more even if you don't wanna change view angle of image

koek : very nice concept, in rendering phase try to keep light system such as the shadow of Ant is mostly visible as you are not showing the most of ANT (its also fine otherwise)

Jelleye
14-04-2007, 12:32 PM
@Koek: Yeah, I've noticed that too. I'm already working on another model, since rendering from another camera angle would work. I've playezd around with the perspective in that scene a bit. This is the only where you can't see the tongue of the anteater is deformed and about 10 times the size of the animal himself xP. Also the planes are positioned in a special way, so I'm affraid it won't work, but thanks for your comment though. I'm working on a newwer, and totally diffirent version at the moment.

As I already told you, I was working on a second model. This time I'm going to concentrate more on the anteater instead of the ant xP. I've also tried to make it a more friendly, baby anteater instead of the big ant-eating one. That's why I used those big and simple eyes. His skin looks a bit to pink, but that's because of the bad lighting setup. I'm still unsure what to do with him, but I'll wait until something pops into my head xP. Here is the first render:

If anyone has ideas on how to make him look better, feel free to share them xD.

exem, your model is really good, and I like it very much as it is.
I don't want to be annoying, but just one thing.....I think that long tube on his head should be the place for his mouth (in fact in a real anteater the mouth is there).
But as I said before, I like the current impression very much.

Hey,

heres a quick render in shaded view, i think im done with the modeling now (unless u think i should change something). The anteaters surrounded by anthills and hes nervous, thats all i could think of lol, the anteaters loosely based on the first pic in this thread, for some reason the eyes stood out to me more than the long snout:).

weitastudio: I like the big head and eyes, do u have a concept or r u winging it, i hope to see your progress.
Shahin_fj: I really like that pose, the ant looks like hes bout to b taken lol.
Sacek: The concept looks great, hope u finish it in time.
Rooky: Great scene mate, cant wait to see it in colour.
Warin: Thank you for the welcome, im happy to b here, i hope to enter the low-poly comp after this 1, i really need help with that, i just found out what "boolean" does :), and no worries bout the uploading mate, imageshack works fine, ta.

hi!
great work! i absolutely love it. there is only one small thing i´d change and thats the clouds. i would make them more cartoonish (just a bunch of circles/spheres intersecting). if you change it or not, you will get my "12 points".

Ties thanks m8! You`re right about that, and I`ll try to make the powerlineposts a bit bigger and the plants smaller ;P
.KaisoR hehe :D I was sure that there will be at least one saying that the anteaters color s*cks ;) Actually at first he was with a blue skin, but it felt like there are too many colors in the scene, so I changed it to brown :) Will see what I can do with this problem. :]
justus_jonas Thanks! I got the point what are you aiming me to do. Of course I`ll give it a try but I`m doubting if I can do that as good as most of you would like it. The present clouds are made using the fire effect in max, so maybe I can still use it, just redone some settings.

great work guys

weitastudio : really funny character. keep it simple.

AbhishekKr : cool one too. MAybe some clean up on textures and mesjh to do anyway.

rooky: you know I like your entry but got some crits on last update. First the green grass and blue sky are maybe alittle to saturated and does not merge well. Moreover your horizon is just at the middle of the picture. At the 1/3 that would be a better composition. So maybe add a fog to fade the colors in depth and maybe work more your sky (more gradient, better clouds...)
One thing a friend of mine tell me is that your rocks on the left break the distance impression you wanted to gave with your electrik post. Maybe reduce the rocks.
I crit because I like :haha:

Hey Kravo, the image upload to the forum isn't currently working there is a database problem that I know forums.3dtotal.com is aware of and working hard on fixing. For the time being you will have to upload your images to a site like imageshack or putfile... not too familiar with most of these so other members might have a suggestion on which is best! Hope that helps and looking forward to seeing your work!

Thanks guys..
@Luume: I create the fur using 3ds max fur modifiers. Yes, I agree that the feet and the hand doesnt match. I will try too choose which style i should prefer.
@AbhishekKr: I rather confuse about the fur...I like the fur one, but it makes him less anteater style...hmmmm....let me think.
Thanks for your adviced guys.

justus_jonas - I'm not sure but there should be some problems with the imagebee.org which I used to upload my image. I haven't taken them out myself.
Anyway I will update the image as soon as possible (haven't done anything with this for a while - so much to do at school lately) and post here the result. :)
And you all are doing really great these days! Gonna be tough when the voting starts! :)

Here's the mesh of my anteater..it's very simple and basic since the fur will cover most of his body (and he is sitting behind a tree trunk):

Hey guys! As I can see, everybody is doing a nice job.
Now I going to improve the scene (put more ants, clouds, maybe a sun) and try to decide wich style of render and shaders I will use. Maybe I will make the anteater UV... Lets see if I will get time to do that.

Sacek Really nice!! The grass looks awesome. And his eyes... :D
Siege - That pose is great! really nice idea indeed.
HA-Jassar - I think it's gonna look really great when rendered! So don't make us wait too long to see this finished! :)

Here`s my final. Did follow the directions you gave me while commenting the previous update, but I guess I won't have that much time anymore to change something again.
So hope you`ll like it! :)

Hi guys!
Rooky- your modeling rocks man! I think the clouds need to be blurred a little more.. just my 2 cents

exem- heheh, cool render!
secek- very very nice ^_^ , perhaps adding somthing in the background would be cool if u have time.. nothing serious though.

siege - great pose indeed...

And here's my 99% finished image, I might work just a little bit on the ants (they are 3d, not 2d )...
tell me if u have any ideas for me to add

Thank u for helping to choose.

Sacek: good scene man, good character design, can wait to see your final image.
Siege: Your scene looks so graphic design, keep it on your style, and maybe more colorful on the aneater.
Rooky:Good job, its so colorful.
eXeM: Your character pose is great, but maybe you have to add more color to the anteater.
HA-Jassar: good color design. And the hair is really cute.

Good job guys.

weitastudio- well i tried a lot of other colors, but unfortunately(or not :) ) this is the best that i could make for this scene, a non-agressive color :D
when i tried other colors i just got some colors with feeling in witch i could not feel the ant eater or others wich were poppin out too much and with using them i'd to change colors of other stuff etc etc, i think i'll leave it as it is.
btw, those furs of ur eater kinda reminds me of a bigFooot aka. Yeti(does it writes something like this?) :D

HA-Jassar

exem: You are right, another name for bigfoot is yeti, the name is came from people who lives near himalaya mountain. :) BTW, maybe you are right too about the fur, its looks a little like a bigfoot. :D

Well the weekend is here and Family comes first...so I think I am gonna call this finished.

Had a lot of fun doing this. And I will probably come back to it and finish it up all the way,
as in no cutting corners here and there.

Probably start it over from the base mesh.

Also learned alot. Touched on a few things I have never done before.

So family and the outdoors calls. Thanks for the comments. Enjoyed watching all the
wips. All quite good.

Hey Guys, after hard work, here I am.
Thanks a lot for your comments. It is the first time that I got in this kind of contest, and it was very nice because I learned a lot with a dead line. Thanks.

Siege: Very nice concept, I liked the way that you solved the scene.
Rooky: Your scene is very funny, it is a kind of situation that you want to see what is going next... very nice!
eXeM: You changed the position of the mouth of a normal anteater, and I think that you did it very well. With this solution you give more felling for your caracter. Well done.
HA-Jassar: The hair is very funny. I nice catoon style.
weita: I loved the fur, I must learn this some day, very nice.
Koek: Congratulation, You got the same feeling that was in your concept. Well done.

Here is my final image.
