I just recently started an internship that requires the 3d that we create to be interactive. for example if i build an engine you have to 1) removes screws 2) removes valves. its for traing new hires out in the field. so my question is how can you set up procedures in 3ds max to make your 3d object interactive. i not sure if its possible in max so thats why im asking or is there another program i can use.

I'd look into hierarchies and dynamics. I won't lie, it's very tricky, there's a lot to learn!
An engine would be really difficult, why not try something simple like a differential (bolts out, half shafts out, diff cover off, diff out, etc)

You could do it in flash or java.

Both would require learning copious amounts of scripting though.

well they are trying to introduce this new software called ngrain, and the whole purpose is it to be like a videogame, but educational is that possible to do with hierarchies, and what type of dynamics would i use

A screw's thread holds two things together?
Or if screw not moved, engine cover movement void or something.

Look into quicktime VR- easy to set up, I think there are some cheapish softwares to help you. Might give you the interactivity you'd need.
