View Full Version : Speed Modelling Challenge 146 & 147 - Role Playing Game Scene

Marty_McFly-3DT

1, Each week we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.

How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief will be removed and the poster disqualified.

2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.

3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.

4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information will be removed and the poster disqualified.

5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 800x600 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 100k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified. Until the image uploading issue is solved, you may use a file hosting service to compete in the challenge... but the image and file size requirements remain intact.

6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.

7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.

8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.

These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions

Time limit - 120 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 2nd of May 2007
Subject - Role Playing Game Scene

Role Playing Game Scene: The goal here, is to create a 3d representation of a scene from any game classified as a role-playing game. For example, Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Fable, The Elder Scrolls, Dragon Warrior, Suikoden, and games that run in that genre are what we are going for. First Person Shooters, Sports Games, Racing Games and the like are not included and the poster of them shall be disqualified. This is for scenes only, however, if you want to throw in props, such as characters, weapons, etc... they will be judged as part of the scene.

I hope you like the entry I made for you. I hope its not too dark.

Wow, well Marty you said you'd make it up to me in the new challenge and you have!

And it's a double whammy too, not only do we get to model a role playing game scene, but we get 120 mins too!!! :)

Rashika-3DT, welcome back, i've not seen anything from you for a while, and a brilliant starter too, very nice archicetural scene.

I hope we'll see a starter from you Marty too?

Definately in on this one. Great SMC idea :)

Kind Regards

Classic Gamer

P.S - Off to research now.........

EDIT: Somethings just occurred to me, 120 mins is a really large amount of time for a modeller like me now, I'm so used to modelling something in 60 mins, that i'm gonn be able to model such a lot more! I'm really excited about the pictures i've seen of Suikoden 3, i'm going to try on of those scene for my first entry without a doubt :)

From Wikipedia : Warcraft III is primarily a real-time strategy game, but it strongly blends CRPG elements into its gameplay.

World of Warcraft fits the bill.

As does:

Ultima Online
Dark Age of Camelot
Everquest
Shadowbane ( my personal favorite )
Vanguard
Lineage
Star Wars
Eve Online

to name but a few of the online variants.

For a more exhaustive list go here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MMORPGs

Then, of course, you have the traditional ones. In the spirit of Dungeons and Dragons, Rifts, Robotech and the like.

A comprehensive list of these are found here:

btw, i never liked RPG games, i just dont like talking to everyone in the village...i like more action, i played once Oblivion, I deleted 10 minutes after, hehe...i like better FPS, i love that...

thats all, hope to see some entries from all of you!

h2k1 - yea oblivion wasnt the most exciting thing. some people like it for its open endedness but i like a game to be quick and to the point. the games like SMRPG and Chrono trigger / cross though have awesome storylines and great characters without the whole wtf am i supposed to go deal.

Cool, I remember The Secret Of Mana on the snes too, that was ok.

Command & Conquer was really really cool though.

I'm researching Suikoden 3 heavily now, definately going to model that one. :)

Well now, it seems that i'm the first entry for this week's SMC then :)

I've gone for Suikoden 3, and i'd found a few nice reference images while searching. This one is from the beauty shots from the game and is usually seen from above as with all RPG's.

The modelling is fairly straight-forward, I didn't rush this either with the 120 mins limit, and i've included a closeup of the little ornate design above the entrance door.

And before you all cry there's texture tiling problems, the texturing repeats several times on the building and the rear wall aswell. I know, I know, but I struggled with the texturing this time round. I'll try better with the texturing next time around. And the plants are added in Photoshop CS2.

So here goes modelled as always in Cinema 4D.

Hope you like it.

Here's the reference picture I've used, it's slightly the same lol :) I didn't think i'd have time to model the dome on the top or the surrounding buildings or the fountain.

KVachon, thanks alot for your comments on my first entry my friend, I liked it, i'm just finishing up the texturing side of a 2nd entry using another scene from Suikoden 3.

I'm thinking about Command & Conquer & Red Alert & Age Of Empires, they are all ok arent they? If not i'll find others.

Might even go for a Final Fantasy castle.

KVachon, love your first entry, great landscape creation and the render looks sweet.

Although I am a very huge fan of the Legend of Zelda series... it does not fall into the category of an RPG style game. Although, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link did have RPG style elements in it's game play... so I may let an entry from that game slide in on that basis. World of Warcraft does count as an RPG... but not the main Warcraft games as those are RTS games.

Please note that I'm not going to be able to go behind everyone to answer whether or not their suggested games fit the brief. Just use your best judgments... as there are plenty of games to choose from. ;)

KVachon : very nice entry, i love how the sand looks!

CG : thats a really nice building, love the details on the top!!!

Now im done with my exams until next week, ill be able to post something...i just came back from playing Resistance online, with Marty :D i just killed him like 6 times, 3 headshots :D hehe thats was pretty funny, i was like looking just for him over on the stage, hehe

im thinking about making something from habbo hotel, i found that pretty funny

Marty_McFly-3DT
20-04-2007, 03:42 AM
Oh sure... just tell everyone about killing me in Resistance... but don't forget to mention that we were playing a one-shot-kill game... and that we were on the same team until you decided it would be more fun to seek me out and kill me. I fair better in a real match anyway... :p That one-shot-kill business was crazy. There will be a next time....

ok guys, that's my first post (hope that more will come),info on the pics,as you can see i've used basic modeling and the texture has been post-applied with photoshop, grass and trees are just maya fur with some modification, the only time that they take is when you have to model the shape that emit grass and to adjust values to fit the scene.
Let me know wht you think

thanks for the kinda words guys,'bout mental ray,i think it's capable of wonderful thing with ease, for that render i havn't used global illumination but just final gater, some coloured spotlight and the sky envroinment. To say all i've also added an occlusion map over the render and also some ink lines and few texture. So photoshop helps but mental ray remain a great built-in choice to obtain alone outstanding images.

The 2nd entry from me then. Based on Suikoden 3 again as mentioned in earlier posts. This is taken from a couple of reference images, mainly this one though, that depicts some of the little shacks that people lived in.

Reference Picture Here: http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/1867/suikoden3referencepictuoh3.png

And then I proceeded to model another nice little scene from this RPG game. Modelled in Cinema 4D as always, again with this one, I took my time modelling, I was still at this point in 60 mins modelling mode, I enjoyed making this one though, i've placed my little building shacks next to the sea on the beach, i've never made a beach shot scene before, so i'm really really pleased with it. Even though i've used Cinema hair module for the grass cliff, the cliff is a landscape object that comes as part of the primitive selection of goemetry, so it's automatically subdivided and I had to make it editable to transform it for my scene, so that's why there's loads of sub divisons for the ground, I did initially have a proper thatched roof for the shacks, but not only did it slow down my render time to about another hour, it also didn't look right for me. In my 3rd entry i've really gone to town with the modelling, but more on that one with the next post.

I've never actually played it, but from what i've seen it looks pretty nice.

So here's the composite, all other information needed is on the composite. a 3rd entry is coming right up after this one aswell. Yes that's right you're getting a double whammy, 'cos it's friday yay! :)

I hope you like.

Modelled from a pretty nice looking game called Baldur's Gate II, I think it's an RPG, I really really hope it is, because i've spent a long time texturing and lighting this one, and i'm really proud of it, so I hope it's ok.

All relavant information on the composite.

I hope it's right, and it's ok.

I assume your talking about the pre-computer generation of RPG's. Ergo, the
original pen and paper types :)

Absolutely they would count. I don't see anything in the rules stating it needs
to be a computer based RPG system.

Long time since I have posted here, but this weeks Challenge looked pretty cool, so here is mine, a fallout 2 scene.
Time used: 120 min on the modeling and about the same amount of time for texturing and lighting.

About Liamo0o's entry, I think you should've worked a bit more on the bridge and the rocks where the castle sits... But a great sword model, looking very nice =)
I wonder why you MultiRes-ed (Or whatever it's called in Maya...) your mesh... Could you post your original model w/o Poly Reduction?

First of all 3dfernando and KVachon thanks for Your kind words :)
Second of all my second entry.
I'm planning to make one scene from each Final Fantasy which will be hard (14 parts...) :D
So this time Lineage :) I've never played this game but I like the screenshot (http://img149.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=52436_lineage_8_6_122_536lo.jpg).

Lightwave in about 100min.
Render 1.5h.

Here are closeups of the wireframes (I had to compress the final image like hell so they're blurry...)
Building (http://img178.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=52420_budowla_122_565lo.jpg), flag (http://img143.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=52421_flaga_122_661lo.jpg) , cross (http://img104.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=52425_krzyz_122_774lo.jpg) , ornaments (http://img45.imagevenue.com/img.php?image=52426_ozdoby_122_1063lo.jpg).

Enjoy and good luck to all.

P.S.
What's going on with the past challenges? I wasn't here for a while and I can see that the past 4 or 5 challenges are without results...

Hey all KVachon here, Back with my 3rd Entry. AS you can see, this subject has really inspired me. For this entry I went with a Town Center from Age of Empires II. Its a Town Center from the Imperial Age.

hemmm...KVachon...i think that age of empires II isn't an RPG game...so your entry could be not valid...

hmmm RTS doesnt coun't as an RPG? You play the role of a king of the civ. I mean technically it might not be. but its a isometric scroller, like countless RPG. so I hope it counts..

either way, i think its a sweet model

hey all. once again, fantastic entries everyone!

misiopuchatek: superb! i agree with 3dfernando your render certainly looks and feels like a shot from a game.

here's my first entry for this challenge, the watchtower from Black Isle's Icewind Dale. Done with 3DS max and Mental Ray in 120 minutes. Was hoping to work more on the area around the tower and add some foliage, yet 2 hours goes fast! hope you like...

well here is my first entry (http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/728/zeldaentry1uu9.jpg). This scene is caught from zelda II: Adventures of Link (http://img381.imageshack.us/img381/6637/zelda2mu4.jpg)
I tried to texture the scene but didnt like the output of it so i left it untextured (does this word exists ;P )

I only saw great entries so far, thumbs up you guys
I dont see how you find time to model such great scene, unfortunately i have only seen architectual designs (not that its a bad thing) ;P.

Note: I just can't open the moderators enrty (Rashika i think it is).

Hello everybody!!

Wonderful entries so far. Unfortunately I didn't have the time yet to look at all the posts, but hopefully I'll find some time this week. :)

Sooo... now that I've learned to use the keyboard shortcuts, I'm working much faster. :o It really is unbelievable. So... if there happens to be someone else who does not use them, I do really recomend taking a time and learning them.

Ok, now about my entry.

I chose a game scenario from Gothic II. I actually don't know the game, as I do not really like RPG games. But I searched for some RPG screenshots and decided for Gothic. ;P

As I started, I realized that I wouldn't be able to make the modelling in 120minutes, without planning. So I first draw everything on a piece of paper.

I stopped modelling when I reached 120min, and I had to make the mountains and the tree leaves on photoshop.

The whole texturing took me more than 2 hours, including photoshop.
I used V-Ray for rendering and a V-ray light.
And an occlusion render.
Done in 3dsMax9
modelling - 120min
render - 14'25"

This is the reference image I found:

No, an Real Time Strategy game does not count as a Role Playing Game. Technically, every game is an "RPG" since in every game you play, you take on the role of the main character or characters within the game word. That is why we made mention in the brief of the type of games we are looking for.

I have a question please!

As Marty says the goal of this challenge is to create a 3d representation of a scene from any game classified as a RPG!
So I just like to know can I make one of the scenes from
Yu Suzuki's Shenmue I or II?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenmue

I asked this because die-hard Shenmue fans (like me) believe that it's not just a RPG!

Also SEGA's legendary developer "Yu Suzuki" calls it a "F.R.E.E" game
which is his own concept and means "Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment"

but most of the major gaming sitesare calling it a RPG game!
so what should I do about this challenge!can I make a scene from Shenmue!

BTW it's good to know that the upcoming Shenmue Online is a MMORPG!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shenmue_Online

...so if we are free to make scenes from MMORPGs too!
then I will be able to make my entry based Shenmue Online!!!
(Although there are many scenes in Shenmue Online that are available in Shenmue II too!)

Thanks.

No. You are automatically disqualified for mentioning anything that has to do with Sega. I mean seriously... a blue hedgehog? A blue hedgehog?!? Not only that... but a blue hedgehog that's so obsessed with rings, even Golem would tell him to relax and take a pill!

:smug: Muahahahaha.... yeah sure... from what I've seen, Shenmue seems to qualify . Go ahead and have fun.

You're telling me it takes ages, wow i've been trying to texture one of my entries which is vanguard - saga of heroes. For the last 20 mins i've been making my own textures for a change too, got some pretty good bricks for colour, and i'm experimenting with normal maps, bump maps, specular maps and diffusion maps, aswell as using fusion layers too! :)

I just hope it doesn't look awful when i've finished texturing though.

CG : thats nice about making ur own textures! that should take a lot more time to finish ur entries! im going to try to make another one, its just that this week i got 2 final exams and one homework, it was pretty nice, i made a 3ds file importer in C++, so i can see it with OpenGL, with all textures and everthing, no shadows btw, but hey, its a 3ds exporter, i was really happy!!! and all the textures i put there came from the dvd i won with the Shopping Cart challenge i won  hehe

hi guys here is another one. It's from final fantasy VII.
I created some textures in photoshop, but really, the renders always
look ugly with them. So i textured this one, again, with some standard colors, and procedual maps (dont know if I used the correct term).

adamos - Beautiful work, really really cool entry! you see guys, if you get to win one of these challenges you too can have textures like that for your scenes, you can see how incredible they are :)

I might have to use the Total Texture CD's that i've won, as my entries texturing efforts are failing drastically, plus i've very little time to spend on them at the moment.

I hope to have some SOME of my entries uploaded over this weekend, fingers crossed.

Guys it's not me to judge but I think 'God of war' and 'Day of tentacle' won't count... :(
Acc to Wiki:

God of War is a video game for the Sony PlayStation 2 console released on March 22, 2005. An action-adventure game loosely based on Greek mythology, God of War was developed by Sony Computer Entertainment's Santa Monica division.

Maniac Mansion: Day of the Tentacle (DoTT) is a graphical adventure game, originally released in 1993, and published by LucasArts. It is the eighth game to use the SCUMM engine.

Adamos - speechless :) You were using VRay displacement?
Coś wspaniałego :) Gratulacje :D

adamos: Beautiful texturing, very clean model and a beautiful post !

ClassicGamer: Shady isnt it ?? hahah.. Thanks so much for your kind comments !!! Looking forward to texturing it when I come around to it. Cheers !!

mr_lemon: B.E.A.U.T.I.F.U.L entry on Page 3 ! Surely adds to the competition .So glad you liked the G.O.W scene i tried ! thought it would count with half the websites claiming 'God of War' to be an 'RPG' and half stating otherwise..i really did like the scene i ended up with, no harm done... Perhaps, i need to be more careful . Thanks again !!

misiopuchatek: Really loved your last entry, neatly textured and a better scene than the original. I really had a ****** good time modelling
Kretos's battle field ( every inch he treads actually ). Well..seems that doesnt count as an entry for this challenge and I really wont find time for another, but i do intend to finish up the texturing and light em up, shame to waste the time put in on it.

ebubba: Very clean and if the floor is done intentionaly ( which i think is ), Nice touch !

Manni: Untextured but Undoubtedly a fab choice and being this the first work ive seen of you, Wonderful indeed !

Diabolos: Hope you send in an entry or two on this one !!! Loads of Blooooody games out there man !!

In my defence :smug: .. here's what prompted me to model my scene out...

Role-playing Game (RPG): A type of conflict simulation in which the player does not command two or more "units." Instead the player controls only one "unit" or "character" which has more detailed characteristics than units in multi-unit games. The players often play their character against an assortment of enemies and obstacles controlled by a nonplaying "gamesmaster." The most popular role-playing games are based on fantasy backgrounds, although since RPGs were developed in the mid-1970s, there have been several published that deal with strictly military subjects.

As Marty_McFly-3dt stated earlier that he could let Zelda 2 to slide in since it posesses RPG style elements... I truly hope this would suffice to convince him into letting this slide in also.

mr_lemon - Thanks for you comments, lol :) but i've not done nearly as many entries as I'd like to have done, mainly because of the other entries i've created they haven't really turned out quite as well as I wanted them to, and at the moment don't want to upload them as entries, I may change my mind but at the moment I hate the look of them. the modelling and the texturing.

You entry though is absolutely incredible, you've actually improved the scene from the reference image supplied. I love the modelling and the texturing you've created with the artisan tools has really really paid off very well. Beautiful lighting too, stunning work!

I've not tried maya, but If you can create things like this, it's worth investigating.

So I might submit some more entries, but I've not found many scenes i'd like to model at the moment.

antto - Very nice entry, great modelling and well modelled too, looking really good, from what i've seen of Fallout 2 it looks like the kind of game i'd enjoy!

At the moment i've just got my hands on Broken Sword 3 - The Sleeping Dragon, it's a fairly old game by todays standards, but i'm so so addicted to this game, I love the look of it too, the previous 2 broken sword games were the typical point and click prodominantly 2D games, they had a few 3D elements but mostly it was breathtaking 2D digital painting and highly addictive, clever puzzled game. And the new version enter into the 3D world and it's jaw droppingly beautiful too, it's not got the polish of games like halo or call of duty, but it's still brilliant. I'm currently 3/4 through the game and playing it at any chance I get. I wanna get the 4th addition of the Revolution Broken Sword games when I can too.

I've seen loads in the game i'd love to model, shame broken sword isn't a RPG, although you do take the Role of George Stobbart and his Ex-Girlfriend Nico Collard, i'm about 80% sure it's not an RPG, more of a adventure/puzzle genre.

Anyway, love the entries, pity there isn't much more, the entries seem to be slowing down a little. But we've still got till tommorow night at 10pm to get entries in, i'm sure they'll be some more soon.

That's enough of my waffling now :)

Hmmmm back to broken sword me thinks....................

Texturing like always a lot more.

Hi everyone,
lovely jobs as always but this time your works are
even more lovely because of the great subject! "RPGs are great!"

About my enrty:

I modelled my enrtry last night with using the whole 120 Minutes! and today
I found some enough time to texture my model(it was too time consuming!)

BTW I liked to show you more renders from my scene...
because there are a lots of tiny details in it
but unfortunately I really didn't have enough time for getting more renders!
so I can't show you my scene from more than one view!

Ok, please click HERE (http://i13.tinypic.com/4u2dqwo.jpg) to see my enrty!

Main Info:

Modelled in:Autodesk's 3ds Max
Modelling Time:120 Min

Additional Info:

The rest of the tools:Adobe's Photoshop CS

My entry is showing a part of Dobuita based on Yu Suzuki's
masterpiece and memorable Sega Dreamcast title "Shenmue".

As always I'm eager to hear your valuable comments!

TO SEGA:Shenmue III NOW!
TO Threedy & Marty:thanks for giving me a good chance to make
something about my lovely game "Shenmue!"

With regards-Alimn

Alimn : hell yeah, awesome entry...never played that game b4, I just dont like that much RPG games...I prefer SHOOTERS, right Marty? Headshot, bannggg!

As CG said, Im waiting too for next week challenge, 4 weeks of games challenge, I think its enough, I would like to have 1 week challenge as b4, no matter if it takes more time to judge, is just refreshing havin new challenges each week...:D

Yeah i'd agree with going back to the weekly SMC's it keeps you on your toes and keeps it fresh.

I genuinly think everyone concerned is doing a brilliant job with judging, and I'll gladly wait and wait and wait, as long as we still get to do SMC's every week i'm happy :)

The judging always eventually comes to those wait.

Not long now till the new SMC either :)

Classic Gamer Thanks a lot man,
yeah I really enjoyed from making my enrtry
because it's been more than 6-7 years that I am a Shenmue fan, lol!
BTW I really liked to have more time to add more things plus
the main character to that scene but rules are rules!

h2k1 Thanks for your post!
BTW I highly recommend you to find and play Shenmue I or II or both of them
, Shenmue is not just a RPG, it's more like a movie!
a very cinematic game with tons of work to do!
gaming sites and gamers call it a RPG because it has a strong story line plus
some other RPG-like features.

If you don't have a Xbox, fortunately Shenmue II is BC on Xbox 360 since Dec 2006
via a update but if you don't want to have a X360 too
(because you already have a next gen console or...)
you should be able to get yourself a Dreamcast with a nice bundle of games
for around £30 from eBay!!!

Ok,I should prepare myself for the next topic which is already up.

There were many DQ's for many entries for not paying attention to the rules. You've been here for a while, so you know the rules very well. Although we didn't have image attachments working, all the other rules still applied. So unfortunately, you were DQ'd for the reason below. Sorry.
