Okay...this might be a dumb question, but would a chimpanzee count? Is it strictly limited to monkeys or do things like apes, chimps and orangutans count? Just wanted to clarify.

I'm pretty sure the judging is based on having a completed 3d model. That doesn't mean that your 2d idea couldn't be modeled by someone if you are open to letting someone do that? It might be a neat twist to have a collaboration model do well...Although writing the breakdown of how it was created would be a bit longer and then if your idea/model wins how do you split up the prize?

Hello, nice to have you here!

From Ben's post ''Use whichever species you like but make sure that it is classified as a monkey!''

And from Wikepedia 'A monkey is any member of two of the three groupings of simian primates. These three groupings are the New World monkeys, the Old World monkeys, and the apes. Apes such as chimpanzees and gibbons are often called monkeys in informal usage'

So to answer your questions:

1. Yes chimpanzee is counted as a monkey
2. Nope, it doesn't strick! you can use whatever species you like! But as Ben said you must have to make sure that it does look like a monkey!

Hope this help :)

Get start and enjoy!

Good luck

Well technically, as stated in your wiki quote, monkeys are members of only two of those three groups. Apes are not monkeys, they are a separate super families of the primate order.

In laymens terms, yes, this is often ignored or overlooked. Gorillas, gibbons, cimps & bonobos, & orangutan are all members of the ape family and aren't monkies.

So for anyone who's seen the instant classic 'Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back', the sherriff is absolutely correct.

If apes are allowed too, thats cool, but it really should be reflected in the original requirements post with a change to these statements, ''Use whichever species you like but make sure that it is classified as a monkey!'' & "The monkey has many species so choose whichever you like. Be careful not to mix monkeys up with species that are not classified as monkeys!".

Those two remarks are a strong suggestion against the inclusion of apes and need to be changed if they're allowed.

Hi All
I haven’t posted anything for some time now, I’ve been out of the loop for a while, but I have been keeping my eye on 3DTotal. I suppose that this challenge must have inspired me, so here’s what I’ve come up with so far.

Hi Guys,
I will let chimpanzee go on this occasion. Chimpanzees are referred 'informally' as monkey but a Biologist would not include them in the Monkey species. NO GORRILLAs etc please ;-)

I want to do Monkey 09 but I dont know what that monkey is called and I kinda want to get more pics for reference. This is fun  who doesn't like monkeys!!

If you go to www.naturfoto.cz, which is written on the reference No.9 and search for ‘monkey’. It will show up like this page http://www.naturfoto.cz/vyhledat/?retezec_search=monkey I assume that the name in the brackets is its scientific name, which is Erythrocebus patas. In the same page, there is about 7-9 images for this species for you to choose as the reference.

Hope this helps!

Good start everyone!

New news!!! Maybe some of you might not check 3DTotal frontpage today, 3DTotal now has just lunched a new desktop wallpaper section. The idea started from we asked all the winners from ''Stylized Animal competitions'' (Highland Cow, Eagle, Octopus, Ant Eater ect) to showed off their skills to create their pieces to a wallpaper. The resule comes out very amazing, check it out!

See their works :
http://www.3dtotal.com/home2/gallery/gallery.asp?cat=wallpaper

So the easy saying is top 3 winners will get an amazing exposure from :

1) featuring in 3DCreative magazine, download statistic is over 15,000 per issue!
2) will be asking to make (it is an optional) their pieces as wallpaper, then there will be promoted as a 3DTotal Daily Highlight from the frontpage for 5 days, of course all credits will be given to the artist. They will be seen many thousands of time as our visitors are exceed 50,000 per day now!!!! great exposure huh?

Tutorial how to create a wallpaer :
http://www.3dtotal.com/team/Tutorials_3/wallpaper_tutorial/wallpaper_01.asp

We are just trying to help you guy get the most exposure as much as we can!! So, joy us, get start and have fun!!!

Tnx Warin, Great news!! Btw thought you have to add this section to gallery menu as well!
I will submit mine too soon! But I have a question, is there just winner works allowed for submission or a minimum quality is required to submit?!
Also thought we need a gallery here in stylized animal challenges just like other challenges to keep our winner works! Just a suggestion I’ll say on FAQ thread also!

Tnx again so much, mim, :haha:

Hokey! It’s what I’ll going for on this challenge! Btw yet a quickly done concept but anyway...!
As you see this time I’ll going for a more detailed character than stylized and simplified animal! Cause seems ppl like more this way! :dunno: Hope I can finish it on time! :D

mr_lemon

hi guys, another little update and some comments

mrpeculiar we could start a monkey fight :D lol, lovely charachter and great stylization, one of my favourite

dreezle you know how i like the way you represent your stuff, one of the most personal style i've seen, keep it on!

zinkete your model looks really good with clean modeling and texturing and now it seem also less human,i think you should just change the lenght of the neck scaling it down a little bit.would to see it furred also :D

penguins you should watch your polycont before smoothing, your model looks a little bit boxy so you should eliminate some edgeloops (especially on the legs) to make it softer,Keep working on it!! :xyz:

al3x your model seems to have a clean topology and represent surely a monkey, but in my opinion it's not stylized enough, make it more funny by altering the proportion especially if you plan to use more than one characher in your image using different proportion between different charachters

now,a little bit of specs about my image,it was done in maya and for that last render i'm tryng out maxwell, but i think that in the end i will use mentalRay instead, the modelling time is about 3 ours, the skinning takes 2 ours and half, mesh tweaking lighting and rendering time are endless (try on,then....try on another time...then...try on.. :wall: ) still not finished, also i have no idea of where to put him in....any advice?

see you

Here's my WIP. This is my first real attempt at a character (I've done some fish and a robot before, but nothing 'humaniod'), so C&C are welcomed. The hands and eyes are very rough, BTW, and their the next thing I hope to fix, as well as adding a tail.

hi jurries, welcome! i think that the overall stylization is good (i like really much the head),you should work on the shoulder and ankle parts of your model inflating them a bit, keep up the good work

Arrhenius: Good expression. Very funny.
Zinkete: Much better now. Maybe one tip. If you want it to look even less human: a monkey never has hair under his nose.
mrpeculiar: Nice details. As always i'm curious to see it textured.

Actually i finished it mine but don't want to post the final shot yet. Keep it a bit exciting

Manipulating multiple meshes is now a lot easier. And we can now go crazy with sculpting,
and not worry about the high polygon counts with the re-topology feature.

Thanks for the feedback mr_lemon, need to work on that brightness.

Changed the lighting a bit, still not there, also tweaked his shirt, bandanna(needs color work, blends in with shirt too much) and added buttons. Need to still texture the BG wall and doors, gun and hand

hi Zyrinx
i tought maybe you should put a backlight that will make him stands out from the BG with an aura(and it make sense since the outside is day time)... and another light maybe from the side like a window with bars on it, so it make the light look like stripes and then adjust them 2 fall on key elements in the model like eyes, teeth etc.
hope it helps

My girlfriend pointed out his body and shirt look too feminine, so I need to rework the shirt and chubu, I fully agree about the halo around the door, I loved that look on the one mr_lemon touched up I just need to figure out how to do that. Also will look into doing a interesting shadow from a window. I'm also planning on moving the door so it doesn't intersect with the cheek hair and doing a light texture on the door and frame...... wow, so much to do
