Hi all,
I'm new here, but I frequently go to www.3dtotal.com to admire great 3D renders and artists. Then I found out these forums and decided to take a chance at this cool challenge. I usually model low poly static objects and so, but I'm an artist in "real" life and a cartoonist. Here is my first head render, a very early WIP, about an hour of work, still have to work the eyes and so. I use freeware programs, so I modelled this in Anim8or (and I edit my models textures in GIMP).

Well... it seems this is the challenge of portuguese newcomers.
This is my first post on the Threadies, but I've been visiting both the forum and 3DTotal for quite some now. Somehow, due to challenging nature of this one in particular, I've decided to give it a go.
Here's an early mesh. No legs, no hands, no textures. Just a with/without NURBS grab so you can have a better perception of what's cookin'.
Modeled in Cinema4D, from a cube. No sketches, just started to model and got this far.
Hope you like it!

The eyes redone, as well as some proportions corrected.

Here's an update.
By now I got the concept plot for the thing: "skinny little AyeAye liar using is long fingers to chat with hot lemur chicks over the internet, claiming he is a hunky monkey or a gorilla macho stud". This is basically it.
No textures yet, and I still have to figure out how am I going to do the hair on the thing... My Hair tool demo has expired...
Comments are welcome.
Ver outro português aqui foi o que me fez finalmente participar alimpo83 :D!

Really cool entry zinkete. The modeling is great, though it looks a bit more like a bat, with those sharp teeth, nose and pointy ears.

Here's an update on my AyeAye. I've been completing the scene with some props, textures and background. As soon as I get my hands on the hair plug-in for Cinema4D I've ordered, I'll complete the whole thing with the fur.
Just for the record, the tree texture is from TotalTextures, and the branches with leafs are from C4D object library.
Comments are welcome people :) Or this will surely become the FORGOTTEN S.A. CHALLENGE eheh.
chubu
24-07-2007, 11:07 AM
well this us surely a forgotten S.A.C... only few entrys... :-)
anyway, daddydoom i like your concept and i want 2 see your animal with the fur and etc. but i think the computer material and texture is very diffrent from the other textures in your scene, i dont feel like its in the same concept... think about it.
DaddyDoom
24-07-2007, 11:49 AM
Tnx for the comment and critic!
Well chubu, what I'm trying to get with the textures on the computer and keyboard is of a dirty, worn out, scratched plastic, because the ayeaye drags it with him from branch to branch. Since this is not the final render, some stuff can really be improved, including the textures on the pc and keyboard.
Any suggestions?
As for the fur, I'm still waiting for the delivery of the plug-in...
setschaos
24-07-2007, 05:38 PM
The computer juxtaposes the whole jungle scene, it's an odd feel but it just goes, maybe adding a few more scuffs from bark of other plants to show that he's had a rough time carrying it through the canopies. Good entries to the both of you I'm looking forward to seeing some more!

thought i would hop in before this gets doomed ;P.

25-07-2007, 05:48 AM
daddydoom-
well i just tought of an idea.
i think it will be very helpful if you'll put few branches and leaves that stuck from the computer, like from between the buttons in the keyboard or from the side of the monitor.
think about it
DaddyDoom
25-07-2007, 07:23 AM
chubu & sethschaos, tnx for the suggestions! I'll see what I can manage to do with the short time I have to finish it. The delivery service failed my address for two days and I still don't have the hair plug-in so i can fur up the critter...
chubu
25-07-2007, 08:06 AM
well daddy doom, if the fur want come in time, i think you should think about alternate options, me for example, dont believe in fur :-) (because i stink in using it lol)
i say, find a nice texture 2 cover him up, and wrap the whole thing
DaddyDoom
25-07-2007, 09:31 AM
Since the delivery service is failing to deliver the package on time, my supplier has uploaded the module online so I can dl it, which I'm doing right now :D
AyeAye, prepare thyself for FUR!
DaddyDoom
25-07-2007, 02:28 PM
Well, here's the first tryout with the fur. I've opted by not growing hair all over the body, and like in one of the photo references, just added some sparse fur on the head, arms, legs, back and tail. I've maintained the pink skin so that the stylization gets a bit more cute and not so freaky as the actual creature.
As for the PC, some foliage was added on the front of it to cut the impact of the texture, and added some dirt on the plastic to make it look more worn out.
Anyway, I still have to make some retouches on it, but it wont be much far from the final version.
Let me know what you guys think... :o
DaddyDoom
25-07-2007, 06:40 PM
Here's another update/tryout. This time I've added a few more fur on the body, and darkened the skin color, except for the face area. I guess the whole image gets much darker and murky, I'm not yet very sure if I like this or not. Perhaps I'll just leave the fur like this, and keep the skin all pink, as in the previous version.

Nice, I like the feel of it, maybe (and I know it more than likely takes 15 minutes to render as it is) but try putting an undercoat of fur on so he doesn't look too much like a chia pet. You could go two ways about it, but I would add a shorter, lighter coat as opposed to darker coat considering your top coat is already very dark. They seem to have really light fur around their face so try to experiment with the fur tool.
BTW I love the subject and his facial feature, It definitely says "scheming online-dater."
Good Job!

So, here's my entry. Though is not the reflection of perfection, I'm happy with it, specially because this is my first S.A.C, and I've managed to complete it on time. All modeled in C4D, the branches and leafs are from the C4D object library. Some post-production, like the adding some dirt on the PC and levels adjustment, added in Photoshop. If a wire is required, please let me know.
setschaos, tnx for the suggestions on the fur. I've added a layer of lighter fur underneath the dark one, and around the face, and it's really better!
It's a real shame that almost nobody participated... I don't even know if there will be any voting at all...
Comments are welcome.

My entry. It's not very good, because of the programs I use(Anim8or, freeware), which are not very "Fur-Friendly":smug: . Still I managed to get a cartoony feel to the model, and I'm happy with that. It's very colourful and I think I managed the colour balance right.
Thanks.

Really cool, almost abstract entry you got there alimpo. It's so stylized it almost looks minimalistic, but somehow it's looks really original. Congratz!
I tried several types of eyes for my AyeAye, but this was the one that I found more suitable for the concept. I wanted it to look a bit frantic, even manic (as he schemes those fake dates with hot lemur chicks on the web), and those little black pupils do the trick.
By the way sethschaos, I kinda stole your line "scheming online dater" for my entry's title... Hope you wont charge me copyright on that :D

27-07-2007, 09:52 AM
zinkete- i tell you why:
i participated at the last S.A. (got 7th place! :haha: )
anyway, i'm in a middle of a animation project that takes all of my time, I decided to use my S.A. from last month (monkey) as the charecter for it. and i want 2 finish one project before i begin another. :)
thats also why im not participating in the S.M.C (shield-awesome work over there)
BTW
dadydoom right: it is looks like a bat...;P LOL

im sorry daddydoom, its great :D
the only thing i think that need a little more work, is the fur on the head, its very...thin...
it's remind me MY very thin hair LOL :)
DaddyDoom
27-07-2007, 12:36 PM
I've tried a more furry head, and it looked like he had a wig ahah. Anyway, I've seen in some photo references AyeAye's that have more sparse fur, not so thick. It was an option I had to take, between having a wigged like AyeAye or a nearly bald one. He's a lazy internet goer anyway, he doesn't give a damn about his hairdo :D
I'll try to do an heavy metal fan next time... if the challenge suites it... unless they give a jellyfish or a vulture as a theme ahah

Hello there, I thought I could use this challenge as a focus to help learn 3D Studio Max with a deadline to keep me motivated. I've enjoyed it and picked up a lot. Here's my entry :)
Firehazurd
01-08-2007, 03:24 AM
GekuL: it looks really good, my only suggestion is that it could use some more contrast. Everything kinda blurs together color and shade-wise. Maybe if you put in a moon or something to lighten up the background a bit it might help things.
DaddyDoom
01-08-2007, 06:29 AM
Really nice entry Gekul. It's more close to a real AyeAye than to a stylized one.
I agree with Firehazurd though. There could be more contrast with the background.
Will there be a new thread just for the final entries and voting?

Thanks for the comments. I agree with both :)
I was thinking it could do with a more stylized look but I got a bit carried away, and now it's too late hehe.
As for the contrast, that was something I was actually working on but I ran out of time and so posted what I had. If you look at the time of the post you can see I was cutting it a bit fine :) Anyway, I'll learn from it and move on to the next one :)
