ok so when i model a car, i cant seem to add proper detail because the meshsmooth makes it all look wrong, is there anyway to remove the meshsmooth on cartain areas on the car?

You should try playing with smoothing groups if you haven't already. You can set individual polys to have different smoothing group IDs then they won't blend into each other if you check the smoothing groups box in the meshsmooth parameters.
Its under the Material ID in the edit poly parameters.
Other than that, you could make separate objects for different pieces of the car.
Hope that helps.

If what Kate said isn't up to your satisfaction, then meshsmooth (in 3ds max 9, not sure about others) has a dropdown called "local control". From there you can specify on how much it smooths (using edges or vertex). Just set the crease level to however much you don't want it to smooth (1=none, 0=whatever iteration you set).

You can also chamfer the different parts edges. Make a very small chamfer. It looks a lot better than smoothing groups.
