1, Each challenge we'll post a subject for you to model along with a time limit on how long you should spend on it. Spend no longer than the allocated time then post a render of your model. No cheating, we are relying on your honesty here and the idea of speed modeling is to simulate a "real world" environment. If you are working on a project and asked to show a concept model you'll need to be able to get somewhere near the target in the allocated time. Your submission should be a model created especially for this challenge and not one you have stored on your hard drive.
How you interpret the brief is up to you as long as the final model conforms to what we have asked for. Any images of models that do not match the brief can be removed and the poster disqualified.
2, You may enter as many times as you like as long as each model is completely new and uses no components from other entries. Entries using models which are not original will be removed and the poster disqualified.
3, Your entry may contain as many views of your model as you like but it must include a clear and easy to see wire frame of the mesh before any smoothing/subdivision has been applied. Please use a screen grab. No other method is acceptable and any "wire renders" or wireframes we can't see properly will be removed and the poster disqualified.
4, You must include the following details with each submission: software used and time spent creating the model. Any further information is voluntary but posts not containing the required information can be removed and the poster disqualified.
5, Post only one image submission per entry which must be no larger than 1024x768 pixels in either landscape or portrait format with a file size of no more than 195k. These images must be uploaded to our servers using the "browse" button on the forum reply page. Do not link to external images files. Images larger than the maximum size or posts containing links to external images (other than for reference materials) will be removed and the poster disqualified.
6, The creation of displacement maps, normal maps and any splines drawn out in an external program other than your modeling software are to be included in your modeling time.
7, Time spent on rendering or texturing or building a scene in which to display your model is not included in the allocated period to allow those with slower machines to participate on an even playing field. What we are looking for is the quality of the models you can produce "under pressure". If your model is not complete, you can still post as long as it's recognizable.
8, Posting the same entry twice in a challenge is considered to be double posting and will result in a disqualification. When asked to fix a previous post due to DQ or any other reason, you must fix the first post, or delete it altogether and create a new one.
These rules apply to everybody taking part there will be NO exceptions!
Time limit - 60 minutes
Deadline - 22.00 G.M.T. Wednesday 15th of August 2007
Subject - Flashlight
Flashlight: Well with all these light bulbs lying around all over the place, we may as well put them to some use. So the goal here is to model out a flashlight.
Have Fun and Good Luck!

So i put my Flashlight to render but damn 60min past like nothing i had som much to do and didnt, missing nuts and details... and i realy prepare for it :(( find measurements a studied how it was done and still didnt have time to make it all.. its my favorite flashlight http://photos.gatlight.com/ .
Im going to sleep now and post render in 4 -5 hours... bye now

So here is my starter for this SMC.
Its modeled after this flashlight: http://photos.gatlight.com/ as i wrote before i didnt have time to made all the details  so i have to hide that in render :dunno:
Even render didnt turn as i wont but i post it any way. Also putting all parts in render was nightmare :wall: i have to aim for something more simple next time.
Modeling: full 60min
Rendering: Throught night 5:34hours
Soft: Rhino + Maxwell
So hope you like it even with all problems i had with it :crazy:

Heheh thanks Sidaho, well i havent seen modeling for about a year cause of work as im not working in 3D industry but rather as 2nd Line Unix specialist for HP so i didnt have much time for my hobby. But now i took week off, also im in last 2 months in work and than im going to England for a year so ill have plenty of time to model and aslo for some bigger projects. :)

hello, i've been busy,
i made a Mag-lite charger (largest one with 2 charge rings)
only had time for the outside.
it's made up out of cylinders, lathed splines and some spheres.

Really cool entries coming in so far. I'm rendering my Flashlight right now, i've modelled mine from a real world flashlight that we have in the house, it's one of many that i'll re-create in 3D for this SMC. I should be able to post it up soon.

Hello everyone!!!
Great starter, Marty!:)
Vladoportos - Your first modl is great! Even if it's not finished;)
Rachel - Your flashlight looks very realistic.
This model took me the whole 60 minutes.
Textures took around 45 minutes
Rendered with V-ray and modelled with 3d max

vladoportos Dude you are on fire! 2 entry's out of the first 4.. I know what you mean about finding time to model I just cant get away from my 2d Autocad. My life is in 2d but I wish so much that it was in 3d. Hmmm... mabey someday.. Keep them up.
mimi01 I like that flashlight it look's pretty damn good. The batteries are for sure a great touch.
nice starter Marty, that 1st entry vladoportos looks so awesome, so killing  and i loved mimi01's entry, nice one..only thing, i dont think those are AA batteries, too big :D
so heres my 1st entry, bidirectionnal flashlight, modelled in XSI, rendered in 3ds, hope u like it

OK well here's my entry, created last night, and the rendering took a long time because of alot of GI samples were used. The glass is awful in my opinion, the reflections are all wrong and there's some minor errors in it that I can spot, but i'm still reasonably happy to post it up as an entry.
This is referenced from a real flashlight we have here in the house, we have the dark red one, I threw in a yellow one just for fun :)
All relevant information is on the composite render. And there's plenty more entries to come yet from me, I've just gotta find the time that's all.
I hope you like.

Hi,
I skipped one but i'm back. I had some reallife reference on this one. The design is pretty cheap and simple but it still took me too long. So i couldnt really model the light and stuff.
anyway hope you like it.

So next one from me, inspired by flashlight which i found on google ( i made some changes to it )
Modeling: 54min
Rendering: Big picture 1 hours 45min than i get BSOD ( Blue Screen Of Dead ) cause i tried to kill one hanging process during render ( vlc media player died on me ) and when i hit kill whole windows died :wall:, smaller picture rendered 34min...
Soft: Rhino + Maxwell as usual :smug:
-------------------------------------------
* that "tentacles" or how to call that things what lights are put on are made by that donut arrayed on curve.
Whole flashlight works in two modes:
1st: You pull the back part out and all lights arrange to normal flash light.
2nd: You pull back part inn and you can arrange each lights as you wish
I wanna to import biped from max and make it pose like scared in front of that flashlight so it would look like he is in front of Hydra  but i have no more time for today, have to go sleep cause i have work tomorrow :wall::wall::xx::cry:
So hope you like it and very nice entries so far

Hi Everybody!
Another week and again tons of amazing stuff!
This time i went for a rather old school flashlight. I know itīs all shiny and the metal appears too black but first of all i really suck at texturing/rendering and second of all i liked the plastic/toyish look of it.

First one from me. This is a flashlight I've had for about a year. It's quite handy since you never need to worry about batteries. Of course, now that I've tried to model it, I don't think I like it anymore.
There were a couple of areas I had to figure out before I could start working on the model. I'll always look for a solution that doesn't involve booleans, but this time I had to work for it.
The screw holes, for instance, are nicely rounded and head straight back, yet not toward the center. This confused me for a minute, until I tried beveling a couple faces on a cylinder with height:-0.01 / outline:-0.01 three times. Normally twice will still leave a nice edge after meshsmooth, but was going for something else. After the bevel I pulled the (now slightly smaller) polygons back, not toward the center of the cylinder, but straight along the y axis. I then scaled them to a y-value of zero, taking them from \ / to - -. A quick couple bevels to keep them in place after smoothing, and that problem was solved.
This flashlight has 5 LEDs, housed in five circles within a cylinder - the perfect candidate for booleans. Except, of course, if you take an 8 sided cylinder with two cap segments, chamfer the center vertex and every other one out from that. Delete those polygons, and all others except for the top, and it's ready for a shell modifier to thicken it up. I figured I could use the same technique for the lens, minus the deleting faces part.
Once I knew I could knock those areas out, I started modeling. Even without those sections giving me any trouble, I still nearly ran out of time. I spent half an hour pushing around that crank and handle section. Just never seemed to look quite right. So, no screws in those screw holes I worked on, or other fine details, but I learned a few new tricks doing it, so I'm happy.
Software: 3DS Max
Modeling: 60 minutes

I'm seriously loving these entries that are coming in. The talent and creativity being shown is really great to see.
I'm currently rendering my 2nd entry it's a keyring mini flashlight and i'm trying to get it to look semi- realistic too :)
Not sure if i'll managed it or not yet though.

Ok well here's my 2nd entry then. Not much to say about this one really, just a simplistic mini keyring style flashlight. I forgot to model the on button though, but never mind. The Duracell text was a botched effort though I tried projecting the spline onto the cylinder, it didn't quite work so try to ignore it lol.
All other information is on the composite render.

Well while googling for reference images, I found a pretty nice one. This is referenced to the 1980's style mini flashlight used by Coal Miner's this would sit in the top breast pocket of the workers shirt and illuminated the way ahead for them.
This was a pretty tricky one to do aswell, it was actually harder to model than all of the other entries i've done so far. But I really enjoyed making it. I may een attempt the old flashlight that was mounted on the Miner's Helmet's it all depends on how long it would take me to create the helmet as the light section would be pretty quick.
Anyway, as always all other relevant information is on the composite render.
I hope you like it, I do i'm especially pleased with my renders so far too.

Here's a flashlight modeled in 3ds max & rendered with V-Ray as usual.

14-08-2007, 04:11 PM
OK well as praveen3d has mentioned the image attatchments is missing from the advanced menu for a posting thread. So i'm not sure what's going on there, but it'll no doubt be resolved as soon as they can possibly get round to it. So until that's resolved i'll post my entry as an attatched image aswell.
This time round I've gone for a children's flashlight, something quirky and fun and I was thinking about those Pez candy dispensers (I think that's what they are called) that you lift the top cap open and the candy is spat out etc. So this is the same, the Dino's head lifts up with the small scaled i've modelled on the back of the head, and as soon as you lift the head, that acts as the on swtich for the flashlight and the bulb which is a tongue is illuminated.
I had alot of fun making this one, I deliberatly modelled out of my comfort zone by modelling organically, everyone should know me by now that I hate organic modelling, because I totally suck at it, but I needed the full hour to create this one, modelled with the good old symmetry null aswell to speed things up.
I hope it's ok.

This is my first model in Vray, so rendering and materials took a while. There is still some noise in the shadow, i'm not sure how to get rid of that.
Modeling: 3DS Max in 60 min.
Rendering: 3DS Max and Vray, 12 min or so.
Materials, settings etc: Couple hours since i it was the first time using Vray. Had some fun testing different material settings.

OK well it's that time again already, time for another comments page for this weeks SMC.
Hasn't it gone fast eh? Doesn't time fly when you're having fun lol.
And we start the comments page as always with our resident mod's starter.
Marty_McFly-3DT Post #01
Modelling
Very nice starter here, going for a slimline flashlight very similar to the Maglite range of flashlights. The modelling of different sections is the way I'd do it too. The different sections are nice and cleanly modelled, the threaded top section of the handle looks just about right and the high poly grip section makes the flashlight appear very realistic once rendered.
Texturing & Rendering
There's a really nice black glossy plastic material used here with the help of a nice outdoor HDRI mapped on it aswell or reflecting anyway. The 2nd HDRI used for the chrome material looks pretty convincing, I think I'm right in saying it's the Kitchen Probe HDRI which I think nearly every modeller has this HDRI in there's materials library lol. It's a good HDRI I use it alot too, I think I use it a little too much though, considering i've got well over 100 HDRI's to choose from. The little screw top with the under spring looks really good also. The lighting is bright and subtle too with just the right amount of intensity and a good soft /area shadow. Wonderful work as always to get us started for the SMC week ahead.
vladoportos Post # 06
Modelling
Wow well you certainly like to challenge yourself don't you, but I genuinely think in this case the challenge paid off, this reminds me of a small gattleing gun (not sure of spelling) The detailing that you're created within Rhino is just superb, the advanced boolean effects that Rhino has, has been more than well adapted for this model. I really liked the looks of this model, the modelling is very clean, accurate and very well planned out. You can tell how much care has gone into the creation to get this kind of detailing as quick as possible. No wonder you thought that you'd missed a few details before the time ran out. The small details on this model are very impressive though, this is work to be proud of in my opinion.
Texturing & Rendering
Well at first glance this appeared photoreal, then I remembered that aswell as you're accurate modelling you're using Maxwell Render, so it's going to look real, Maxwell Render is an amazing external renderer. I couldn't get my head around it myself when I tried it out at a mate's house, there's alot of parameter's to consider, just can't just hit render sometimes and expect a perfect render. However given a little time to set things up correctly and create the correct types of materials you can acheive a photoreal render such as this. THe brushed metal is perfect here and the glass for the front bulb is just incredible. Your work, your creation of models, materials, lighting and rendering just keep getting better and better. This is great work.
Rachel vd M Post #09
Modelling
Excellent entry here, going for the Maglite which is think is the inspiration of Marty's entry too. This just looks very good indeed. The cylinders are nice and clean and the area's of the model which are using splines and lathe's have worked very very well here. Another model with the parts modelled separatly, I personally think this is the best way to model, you have more control of individual parts than creating the model out of one big mesh and adding selection tags for materials. The flashlight looks really well modelled though and accurate I think too.
Texturing & Rendering
Gorgeous black gloss material here as with marty's entry, the additional luminance plane above give the black material a great look. The glass material is great too, and you've created the material in such a way that it looks like the flashlight is swtiched on, or that might be a small light placed directly for that effect, but either way it really works well for the model. The power button and handle grip look spot on, and the additonal manufacturer label round the top trim really add's a touch more realism. Well done, great entry here.
vladoportos Post #10
Modelling
Now with your 2nd entry, you mention that these aren't very hard shapes, but in the case of the grid mesh on the handle that looks a little but complex, again though what a fantastic entry, as you've mentioned in an earlier post, you've been away from modelling for a while and yet you create something like this. Well I love it the grid mesh that's all over the flashlight handle along with the Bushnell text logo is just really really inpressive. The model has a great form and shape to it and certainly looks realistic that's for sure.
Texturing & Rendering
Another winner for me with the texturing of this model, going for the brushed or used metallic material, the glass looks inpressive again, but i'm not sure if it's due to Maxwell or the materials, but the front glass and chrome setion of the flashlight is a touch too much noise for my likeing. The lighting is subtle as always and not to overexposed. My only single crit would be that in the render the flashlight does seem to appear to be floating a little bit from the ground plane. But I think at a second glance that's most probably the angle it's at with the head of the flashlight being so much bigger than the handle. Another beautiful and accurate entry. Wonderful work.
mimi01 Post #12
Modelling
Cool entry here, the modelling is very well assembled, clean and accurate. The details on all around this models are impressive too, I can see why it would have taken the full hour I can see the handle section looks like a pretty tricky shape to perfect. The shape of this flashlight looks just perfect though, and the bottom screw section where you add the batteries is superbly done. Nice to see you added the batteries also, they are spot on.
Texturing & Rendering
Great material firstly, the subtle lighting had illuminated the reflective black and the plastic yellow very well. The batteries look ok too, the texture maps look about right to me anyway. The glass for the front of the flashlight looks great and I see also that there's some flashlight light too. Vray has worked it's magic again here. The soft shadows have made this look very nice and realistic. I like this one alot. Great work.
h2k1 Post #14
Modelling
Interesting design used for this flashlight, this bi-directional light looks very well modelled, very clean nd accurate modelling. The spline wires connecting the base handle look cool also. The lightbulbs and bases look just about right to me, and a good model.
Texturing & Rendering
Nice render, that wood for the floor is very nice. Going for the sketch and toon style cartoon render again, this one really works with that type of render. The bulbs look great, and the slight bumb grip material for the handle works well. Nice lighting, not too intense and a nice subtle amount of DOF at the rear of the camera too. Not a bad entry at all.
UrsiNMC Post #17
Modelling
Now we've got on of these flashlights at home right now, and I can tell you that this model is absolutely spot on, every single detail here is perfectly re-produced. I like this detailing alot, nice and clean modelling the power button is a tricky shape to get right, but you nailed it. Great ridges on the battery cap and the bulb head, and nice little circular details at the top of the handle base also.
Texturing & Rendering
Excellent lighting firstly, the shadows seem to fit just perfectly here, the chrome/metallic material has a really nice subtle cranel noise of something mapped onto it, which gives you that natural real world used look to the chrome. The bulb looks nice and the black handle material looks just like plastic. This is a very accurate and visually appealing scene. A Really good entry.
Sidaho Post #21
Modelling
And so we have the third Maglite entry here, and like the two before it, looking just as well made and good. The grip mesh for the handle base is just about right, the flashlight head looks very good, everything is modelling nicely and very clean mesh building. Another great spilt apart model too.
Texturing & Rendering
Another nice reflective/glossy black material used here, I must mention that getting a good black material isn't that easy, black is the most difficult colour because it's not very responsive with lights etc. And it you place too much reflectivity on a black surface it will just look metallic. But you as with the other entries are sitting in the happy medium. This had a good look to it, nice subtle lighting. The glass and the bulb section looks good also. This is a great entry.
Gungnir Post #22
Modelling
Well for saying that you mentioned that you couldn't model out the bulb section, I don't think that really matters too much as you design look very good, it's nice and clean modelling the grip with all those intersections would have taken me a good 15 mins to do, making all those knife cuts and selections and extrusions lol. The power button look about right too. And as you've mentioned the help of actually having a real world object to work from helps alot.
Texturing & Rendering
Not a bad render here either, the lighting looks ok to me, the grey slightly noisy material looks and works well. And the glass for the small section of the front bulb you managed to make looks great. This is great work regardless of the bulb missing. Well Done.
Sky_Eagle Post #23
Modelling
Cool entry, great clean mesh building, really great details and a cool shape to the flashlight. I like the grip detailing on the bulb head and the handle base. The power button section is wonderfully done also. All very well assembled and look very nice indeed.
Texturing & Rendering
Nice lighting firstly, the glass that looks like blurred chrome really really works well for me. Another nice black glossy material. And an almostluminous greeny/blue material, turquoise I beleive, naturally that could probably glow in the dark wehn using the touch in a dark environment. This is great work. I like it anyway.
DaddyDoom Post #28
Modelling
Inspired modelling used for this one. I can see this working really well in a real world environment. Great clean mesh the boxeyness of the mesh looks odd, but onced you've got your hypernurbs switched on the excellent shape for this flashlight appears. Nice front bulb detailing, I like the additional wrist strap also.
Texturing & Rendering
Superb render really, the lighting look just amazing, with the yellow material used alongside the black details it looks great. At the compositing scene looks fantastic I adore that water and rock formation you've used, I could do with that for my renders lol. I really love this, it just looks excellent in my opinion. Great work.
Rachel vd M Post #29
Modelling
Cool and LED flashlight, I remember these, you've nailed the design perfectly, this looks just like the one's I remember, like you I too had one of these once, but seem to have misplaced it also. Great clean & accurate modelling, the small details such as the little LED with the filaments and the spring section for the battery cap looks really really impressive.
Texturing & Rendering
Very nice metallic materials used here, great shine and reflections, cool blue plastic/perspex material for the LED. Nice lighting with the help from Mental Ray. This is superb.
vladoportos Post #31
Modelling
Wowzers!!! Go Go Gadget Flashlight! lol another super model, the modelling again is incredibly impressive here. Those booleans that you like so much work you well for you. Great use of splines aswell. The way these wires are remind me of Medusa from Clash Of The Titans, where you couldn't looks at her or you'll turn to stone.
Texturing & Rendering
Perfect rendering yet again, a shame about the BSOD though, they are most annoying aren't they, you'd think Microsoft would build an entirely new Windows without BSOD's or at least remove them, they should have for Vista but never did. Anyway, the materials especially the chrome used here are again just perfect. I just love this, but for it's accuracy of modelling and for the almost photoreal render. Gorgeous work again.
Rachel vd M Post #32
Modelling
Weird lamp is the the righr word for it, this looks like something out of Red Dwarf or something lol. But the modelling is just awesome, brilliant detailing and very very well made.
Texturing & Rendering
Really very nice material, with great reflections, not too bad lighting srtup either with Mental Ray. This is not my favourite entry of yours, but it's a close second.
justus_jonas Post #33
Modelling
Nice entry here. Great to see an old style model, this reminds me of the old Miner's flashlights that would be sat upon a rock besides them. The modelling looks very well done, nice and clean meshbuilding of most sections.
Texturing & Rendering
Well considering you mentioned that you think that you aren't very good at texturing I think this has a nice look to it, the top dome bulb to instance looks perfect to me. In fact the only weak spot on the texturing side of things would be the bulb metal, it's not working for me, but the plastic and the paint really looks great to me, and a great lighting setup too. I think this is good work.
Lukanus Post #34
Modelling
Nice model, looks a very clean and well assembled mesh, I particulalry like the small acorn like bulb that looks really good. Nice little detailing on the rest of the mesh also. The flashlight has got a good shape and looks pretty realistic to me.
Texturing & Rendering
Nice chrome material, great reflecivity and the bulb glass looks perfect, impressive lighting, nice shadows and a good use of DOF too. Not much more to say on this one, Very good entry though.
h2k1 Post #35
Modelling
Not a bad entry here, the flashlight has a good shape, and it's a very clean model. The front bulb head details look good and so do the handle grip sections also.
Texturing & Rendering
I've got to say I'm not too keen of this material, i'm not sure why though to be honest, it doesn't work for me somehow. The front bulb glass looks ok as do the buttons. But the pattern doesn't work for me, I think you seem to lose the detailing that you've worked hard to put it. Nice modelling, but the texturing not for me sorry.
MrX Post #36
Modelling
Interesting concept this flashlight, having the multiple lightbulbs is a nice touch I think. The modelling of the rest of the flashlight looks nice and clean, and the flashlight has a good shape to it.
Texturing & Rendering
The bulb's & front flashlight glass looks really great I think. The grip materials of the upper and lower sections of the handle look about right also. Nice rear projected lighting with a subtle shadow. This is great.
Keylitho Post #37
Modelling
Cool entry here, very clean and well assembled modelling, all the different small sections have worked really very well here, especially the grip sections and the screw threads.
Texturing & Rendering
Great lighting really nice, the materials work really well in this scene that you've created, I particularly like the small microchip, the battery cap with spring and the front bulb glass looks very good indeed. The render looks pretty realisitc to me. This is a brilliant entry.
Rachel vd M Post #38
Modelling
You know what get's me about this entry, the fact that this entry hasn't really got much geomtry to it really, it's alot of duplicated/arrayed objects, and yet it works so very very well. Now why didn't I think of this lol. the modelled in perfect yet again really nice and clean modelling and excellent section. This time to arrange this would have taken me longer than 60 mins I think, so I think you're lucky you managed it, but you certainly pullled this one off it looks impressive.
Texturing & Rendering
Again, great materials, nice lighting, it looks very futuristic and It's just superb. Nothing much more to say about this one really. It's definately work to be proud of in my opinion anyway.
Trimyr Post #39
Modelling
Lol I love that comment you made about since you've tried to model this flashlight you don't like it lol, that's probably so so true especially if this model has gien you so much troubel. But I've seen flashlights like this one and I must say you've nailed it exactly, this is just astoundingly good modelling. Everything looks about right to me and really great clean modelling too.
Texturing & Rendering
Perfect materials and lighting also, I thought it was a photo at first, it just looks amazing. This is a really amazing entry. Very good work indeed here.
h2k1 Post #42
Modelling
Now this is more like it h2k1 this is what you're best at, the modelling of this is just excellently done. Clean and very very well assembled sections, it looks very realistic, and certainly looks in keeping with the Splinter Cell world, I could definately see this in the game without a doubt.
Texturing & Rendering
That red glass looks superb, the black material looks just like the right style for camouflaging and could be easily mounted onto a helmet or something. This is my favourtie entry so far from you. This rocks!
Sky_Eagle Post #43
Modelling
Nice entry, looks very old fashioned too, looks like the type of flashlight in the 2nd World War, that style of green was used alot. Great clean modelling, nice detailing on the upper and lower parts of the flashlight. Great shape to the power switch also.
Texturing & Rendering
As mentioned in modelling the green material looks really nice, great glass and a nice sublte black material for the power buttons. Superb composited scene also, great flooring and brick walls. I really like this one.
Rachel vd M Post #44
Modelling
Lol clever entry, not sure if i'd like the hold that kind of flashlight in my hands though for fear of the thing exploding on me. Cool model though, with great booleans and clean modelling.
Texturing & Rendering
Nice simplistic material used here, not too bad lighting either. I prefer some of your previous models though to this one. But still clever entry.
UrsiNMC Post #45
Modelling
Oh yes, now this is vintage alright, that looks really very cool, excellenly modelled, really clean simplistic modelling, but very effective modelling also. Great moulded metal over the top of the bulb section and the key-like power switch, this is very well done.
Texturing & Rendering
Beautiful render here, you mentioned that you tried to make the render look old, I think you've managed it too, the materials work really well with the lighting. This looks great. A really good entry.
praveen3d Post #49
Modelling
Wow this is an excellent entry here. Amzing detailing, a great clean and well modelled mesh too. great use of splines and then lathed into shape, the shape of this flashlight is very good and original.
Texturing & Rendering
Beautiful render, the yellow material has just the right amount of reflectivity and gloss to me, great glass material too. Really nice subtle lighting and a nice flooring aswell. This look really cool. I like this entry alot.
Sky_Eagle Post #52
Modelling
Not bad entry here at all, another one from yourself, each of your entries have been really impressive. Another clean mesh with great detailing, especially yhe handle grip and power button.
Texturing & Rendering
Cool lighting, nice subtle shadows too. Great woodned flooring. Not bas base material for the flashlight and a great glass material used here also. This is another good entry from you.
Shiskebab Post #54
Modelling
A warm welcome to the SMC's Shiskebab, and what a nice starting entry aswell you bring to the SMC's really nice simplistic clean modelling, simplistic but very very effective also. Great idea to have 3 mini bulbs at the front also.
Texturing & Rendering
Really very nice render here, you mentioned that you had noise in the shadow, I think that adds a nice little something to the render. The flashlight looks really good, especially as it's swtiched on aswell. Great reflection and gloss to the grey base material also. This is great work. I hope to see more from in the future SMC's well done. Wonderful Entry.
evil-98 Post #55
Modelling
Impressive entry here, really nic clean modelling, great detailing on the top bulb casing and the little details everywhere else really looks impressive to me.
Texturing & Rendering
17 Hours to render Blimey! that's a long time, however it's paid off for you, because that render looks awesome! very realistic and very nicely done. Superb entry there.
Ok well that's gotta be it for this SMC with commenting. I'm sorry if anyone else submit's a new entry after this comments page now. There might be a few mistakes also, so sorry for that. I run out of things to say lol there's only so many times you can say Superb, Awesome etc, but my vocabularly is limited, I must be abit thick I think.
Anyway, i'm happy with my 4 entries for this Week's SMC
I'm looking forward to a new SMC.
Kind Regards

CG : oh men tnx a lot, it feels so great reading ur comments, its a honor, i know for my 2nd entry wasnt the best, but hey, i did want to post something, now for the 3rd, that was my shot! i did really like how it turned out, tnx again! ur entries are awesome as always, love a lot more the kids flashlight :D
hey Marty, i already uploaded my pic, 1st of all, i was trying to upload my resistance sig, from their site, its a php address then i got the message it wasnt the good format, so i saved the png file to my pc, uploaded and the added [ SIGPIC ] code to my sig, i can see the picture on my preview, i can ever see it on my profile, but cant see it on my posts... theres a way linking the image to myresistance.net? so my sig will update everytime...u know, it says all about the game, kills deaths headshot, that kind of stuff
Maybe I'm missing something, but I no longer see the upload feature for
the images. Have we gone full time to the .img tags ?
Will post one via that method in the interim I guess.
Been busy lately and not really in the mood to model but managed to
do a flashlight. It's modeled after the one that sits on my nightstand.
The Sure-Fire 6P. It's exceptionally bright for such a small light.
http://home.houston.rr.com/dayelyte/images/Flashlight.jpg
forget about it, i can see it now :D but still, is there anyway linking that site to my sig here?
Daye : upload system is down, for maintenance, some kind of a virus....nice entry btw! can u tell me how u made that material, looks awesome :D and those ligns? bump?

I've started a hamster powered flashlight... But I had no time to complete it :(
ClassicGamer, once again thanks for the kind comments.
I've been using either Standard or Stochastic GI in these challenges. A background always seem to add the right vibe to the model. For this particular case I've used a terrain object (with a rock texture straight from TotalTextures) and a plane with water texture. Used a slightly modified "By the sea" Sky, from the presets lib of C4D to get the proper feel of a cold and bright light.

ClassicGamer Nice comments, thanks... :D I love rhino booleans and i do 90% of thinks with it, its fastest way to model in rhino... That grid on my 2nd picture was wasy just one tube + booleans with triangles and than coppy many time next to each others :D

thank you CG for the nice c&c's!
btw.
i arranged the parts in the the sixplode light (nr 38) by making a fully assembled part (1/6th), grouping it, setting the pivot to the center and shift+rotate the whole thing!
forget about it, i can see it now :D but still, is there anyway linking that site to my sig here?
Daye : upload system is down, for maintenance, some kind of a virus....nice entry btw! can u tell me how u made that material, looks awesome :D and those ligns? bump?
The material is just a Blinn Material with some reflection. The lines are a bump map from the TT CD's. Metal 11b on the General Textures CD to be precise about it :)
I love using Rhino myself, I just wish the .obj export worked a bit better to allow me to take it into XSI for rendering. It has
a tendency to split the mesh into multiple pieces and the gaps show unless a lot of cleanup work is done once in XSI.
