Heye guys,
After a hard period of school projects I switched 3dsMAX for Maya....
I begun with some simple modelling and got quite used with Maya so I tried the cartoonish bird tutorial from Aivaras Grauzinis (Tutorial here (http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/maya/bird_tutorial/bird.asp)). But when I got to step 3, were you have to create the bird's "socks" and you have to split the polygons for his beak i got stuck. So I'll hope you guys can help me...

About the socks: I can't get the right extrution (= that right spelled?) so could one of you tell me how I do it a bit more in detail then how the tutorial does?

About splitting the polygons: Is it possible to split the polygons on the back (mirror) side of the mesh at the same time you split the polygons on the front side (so you have on each side of the sphere the same splitted polygons)?

Thanks

Cycone

what you need to do is split polys and define on one side only. Then when your satisfied with the look, you just mirror the geometry then merge them together...you must select the faces of the bad half and delete of course...

Well I have been up for 26 hours so the tutorial is not making any sense to me right now. But after I sleep some I will do the tutorial and try to see if I can help you out. Now if the dumb sofa delivery guys would get here I could get some sleep. Word of advice when they say 3:30 they mean that is when they will call and tell you that they will be there sometime today.

by socks I assume you mean legs. He just used nurbs. But he assumes you have a grasp on them. Go find a nurbs tutorial because to explain them I would have to write my own tutorial.

hope that helps

No, I mean the part the legs come out...he calls it socks..he says you have to extrude some faces a few times..but I can't get it right...

Ah ok, now I see what you’re talking about. It’s pretty easy to do. Select a block of four polys on the bottom of the sphere. Now extrude them. If they come apart make sure you have keep faces together attached. Then scale the new extrusion (do not flip to scale mode, do it with the extrusion scale tool) then extrude the bottom of your extrusion again. Do this four or five times. It's not going to look exactly like the picture because everyone works in a different way.
