I`ll definitely try to find some time for this one. IMO one of the greatest animals for stylizing.
Good luck everyone! :)

Hi,
This competition is 3D only. We do however run a painting competition at conceptart.org here:

Thanks.

Well, here's a 30second pencil sketch with the concept for my Hyena. It will be a comedian hyena, driving her audience wild with dirty jokes and her hysterical giggles.
Let's see if I have the time to work on this...
Good luck everyone :D

I have been watching this challenge since my friend Michael Van Den Bosch has won the monkey challenge.
I have decided to try my hand at this one. Here's my concept sketch. I hope that I will have the time to model this guy...

Well guys, here's my pre-entry. Not sure if I'll modify something or not. Concerning the modeling, there are some things I'm not really happy with, but it was too late to change them.
I'll probably leave this entry as it is, and if I have the time for it, I'll make another one.
C&C are welcome!

well, this time i will try to do the model without pre-concept, and see what happens. i am going to travel this month, so i hope i can finish the hyena.

daddydoom_i was watching seinfeld the last weeks, the first and second season. your hyena looks like the humor of larry david. you have modeled very fast, parabéns!

here my wip...

Tnx dude! It was a fast one, cause my "serious" work wont let me spend much time doing it...
Your model looks promising!

Any idea why the hair modifier would turn the normals on my mesh inside out? How do I prevent this from happening... should I just pre invert them and make the hair reverse the effect? Seems somewhat... dumb.

Thanks.

Hyena is a great animal for a stilzed animal contest, really great :D

@tony clifton
Looks like a good start, though I think that the jaw is a little screwed because it's made of a circular form and triangles, i don't know if it looks bad in smoothed form, but I think you could end up with a pretty bad mesh in the mouth region.
Good luck with it :)

Nice starter sadot!
I think that, considering the fact that the body is so well proportioned, the head is a bit small and loses the caricature aspect a bit.
Also, the hair on the head is a bit too much I think, but in the back is cool. The overall fur coat is nice too.

love the model...great style. He seems to resemble a Dingo/wild dog more then he does a hyena however. Hyena's have such a distinct body shape with their lower hind quarters, muscular shoulders and barrel chest that makes them instantly recognizeable. Most bipedal cartoon hyena's tend to either have rather bulky upper bodies with ridiculously short legs or the artist will simply make the whole body rather heavyset allowing for slightly larger legs. I love what you have there...it just doesn't say hyena to me.

RageCage
21-09-2007, 05:26 AM
I plan on adding fur and spots, which I think will convey the hyena-ness without me having to alter my actual geometry, I hope. Between the spots and the mohawk-style back hair, I think it will end up screaming hyena =)

An update! Time to start working on that hot body...

Another newcomer in the challenge :haha:

So,

What one would call a "sketch" or at least an attempt...
http://www.f-oeni-x.com/challenges/SaC/hyene3.jpg

and its 3D interpretation (with wire)
http://www.f-oeni-x.com/challenges/SaC/hyene1.jpghttp://www.f-oeni-x.com/challenges/SaC/hyene2.jpg

Now lets find a strong, cool and dynamic pose:hmm:

DaddyDoom
24-09-2007, 03:33 PM
Love that styling dood! Let's see that with fur :D
You could put a really nasty grin on that face. Hyenas always look like they're mocking us.
Good work!

XineoF
24-09-2007, 07:04 PM
Thanks guys, I'm glad you like this first try :shy:

DaddyDoom, you're nasty grin idea is really good. Therefore I 'm looking for some kind of craziness, like a dull hunting hyena

Here is what I was working on till then
http://www.f-oeni-x.com/challenges/SaC/hyene4.jpg

The neck seems very short, but I hope I could get ride of that adding some fur or something else... or not :dunno:

Hi everyone. I see some really nice work in here.

Firehazurd: Great concept art. Can't wait to see the final result.
RageCage: I love the expression and the heroic pose.
XineoF: Great style and fantastic model. I'd love to see him in motion.
stiderotte: Ohh he's so cute.
zinkete: Dude, that is probably the weirdest looking hyena I've ever seen. I must say I do dig the style though.

Nice work everyone. Hope you don't mind if I join you. Here's my first wip image.
