Urgh! The 3D Game Maker was absolutely awful last time I tried it. If you've got some coding skills then I would seriously recommend having a look at

www.darkbasic.com

though the pro version is admittedly $99. Free 3d engines are few and far between, but if you search on Google you may be able to find one that is at least capable of a reasonable number of polygons and some basic lighting...

http://www.darkbasic.com/order1.php - feature lists and prices of the lowest priced version. Remember that you get what you pay for, but at $15 for the cheapest it may well be affordable for you...

If you (or anyone else!) find any decent links to free engines, maybe post them in the Viewpoint Viewer thread I started as it's turning into a useful apps thread :)

Virtools (http://www.virtools.com) is a real good 3D engine and is real easy to use, but it's used by profesionalals and I imagine very expensive.

Oh and I also remeber something called 'Blender' or something, which is open source now, so I imagine its free. Dont know a site for that one sry.

Jet3D (http://www.jet3d.com) and Morfit (http://www.morfit.com) are good free 3D Engines, but you still have to do the actual game programming, which I think is the best way to go anyway. Morfit (http://www.morfit.com) can be used with Visual Basic, as well as other languages, but VB is always slow, and I think Jet3D (http://www.jet3d.com) can only be used with C++.

And Blender ... yes that is free now, at www.blender3d.org.

www.wildtangent.com
- very sweet package..for free.

www.alice.org
- from CarnegieMellon, still being built, pretty good and easy to get into. Cant wait for new features.

http://www.clickteam.com/English/jamagic.php
Some say its dated, its pretty powerful though. Scripting language based on javascript (I think). I found it a little difficult to get into...but I'm an idiot.

http://conitec.net/a4info.htm
A5 3D GameStudio
- Never tried it out. The "features" demo looked pretty good though.

Personally, for viewing game models, i use WildTangent. It comes with a 3dsmax exporter and can export stuff directly for their webdriver. You can also make screensavers and winamp visualisers.

Power Render trial version is free to download but it is a huge file. You'll need some SDK platforms and good C++ skills though.

Good Luck

The game is not operational yet, and we don't have a web site. It is still in the developmental (aka. mostly on paper drawn story lines, maps, concept art, etc.) Don't worry, I will start plugging it to death once we get it running :D Our programmer has had some experience and has started to work on the code, while I and one other guy are starting on putting art from paper to the computer.

You may also want to check out the Torque/V12 Engine (http://www.garagegames.com) the engine has powered Tribes2, has award winning networking code and sourcecode is provided for the low cost of $100 with a very helpfull comunity. I'm using this engine now and would suggest it to anyone that asks, another great engine that I've worked with is the LithTech Engine (http://www.lithtech.com) but that cost quiet abit for a license.

Milkshape is absolutely horrible. Get Yourself a copy of Gmax or Maya PLE if you can't get hold of a full version 3d package.

Getting back to the point in question, I'm pretty sure you can still get hold of the Jet engine for free, as long as you're not planning to sell what you make with it and you're not a large group...

I have an OpenGL engine in the making... it'll be more of a DLL kinda thing. But I wanna create a demo project to do with it, and I need modellers...

It'll be a racing game, with music and sound and stuff. If you're interested, e-mail me at saxxonpike@hotmail.com. You'll be kept up-to-date on the project and maybe even get to beta test :)

I don't need models just yet, but you can still e-mail if you're interested.

The engine only supports T3D models with external materials, but soon it will be 3DS, MD2, and MD3. They'll still have to have external materials, however :/

i can
its called milkshape 3d.
its better than any of the other stuff out there, it gets better results much faster. Gmax and 3dsmax are absoultly horrible for low poly moddeling for me. Different people use different packages to suit their needs.
so...
SHUT UP!

not viewed this forum for ages. it aint been up when i checked for it. ive downloaded a few free programs and im gona try them. just one more question though.

Why the hell does Maya PLE not work on my PC when its a AMD 500 mhz 192Mb RAM 20Gb HDD Geforce 2 AGP 32Mb VRAM. 3DS Max R3 just about works on it and ive seen people post images using roughly the same spec with grate results. why me?

What os are you using? Maya will only run under nt based os's like win2k or winxp pro. (not including unix or mac osx of course.)

Snipermaster - if you make dumb, arrogant sounding comments like "I should know - milkshape is the best low poly modeller out there" then expect remarks. There is a reason people use max maya lightwave and softimage in professional environments. If you'd have said best FREE low poly modeller, maybe it wouldn't have had the backlash. (although for free, not exclusively low poly, poly modellers personally I think wings 3d is extremely versatile. )
Learning maya ple or gmax would help if you ever went for a job in the industry too.
