Subject – Character ReDesign
ALL WIPS AND CONCEPTS ARE TO BE KEPT IN THIS THREAD.

Guide Lines:
Close your eyes and think of a game/movie/tv character, doesn’t matter which. Pick the first one that comes to mind. Now, think about what they would look like if you had designed them. Now stop thinking about it and do it.
ReDesign your favorite character from any media format you can think of. Put your style all over this model, make people say, “man, that’s what he should have looked like to begin with” This is not a fan art competition, I don’t want to see you model out something that looks just like the original, that, is, boring.
The specs for this competition are for everyone that wants to step it up a bit (10,000 total tris), it may sound like a lot, but the idea is to get you all ready for the up-coming Dominances War. We need to defend our championship. So consider this your training. You get about 4 weeks, so do not try and over do it. I want people to finish. So start now.
Above all,

Judging: 3 categories of judging will apply. 10 points possible for each:
Concept - How well your idea fits the topic
Model – How well the geometry is structured, how well it looks like the subject.
Texture – How well the texture space has been used, and how well the texture is painted/applied.
DUE DATE: October 28th: a Sunday, 4 weeks and a few days from today! 12 (midnight) GMT - SUNDAY
Prizes: to be announced.
Idea:
Your mission if you choose to accept it, will be to take a character from any media format and redesign it.
Poly limit:
10,000 Tris Total. You can do whatever you want with these, just don’t get carried away and don’t exceed the 10,000 Tri Limit. Remember, the limit tells you where to stop, there is no minimum, so use as much of the limit as you see fit.
Textures:
(1) 2048 x 2048 texture. This means (1) 2048 for color, (1) 2048 for bump, (1) 2048 for normal, (1) 2048 opacity, so on and so forth. You can chop it up into whatever you want, but you still need to go all out in your texture.
Textures can be hand-painted or you can use photographic sources. Do what you do.
Final Pictures:
Required In The Final Post (1 post per entry):
- 1 x Winning pose shot. This image can only have "One" pose of your character. No multiple shots or different angles. Just one!
- 1 x Beauty shot of your character. Feel free to put multiple angles of your character or just one big version or your character on this page. Even better, try to composite a nice art piece similar to the ones in the Winners' Gallery. Be careful how you do this though, simple is often better. It’s up to you. Also add a picture of the character your redesigning. Like a before and after type thing.
- 1 x wire frame shot of your character. Feel free to put multiple wire frame shots or just one big wire frame shot on this page. It is up to you. Must have polycount included.
- 1 x texture sheet that includes all your used sheets squeezed into "one" sheet.
- Concept Sheet (Only if you have a concept)
You must provide a screen grab of your wire frame with your poly count, with the actual model and all its parts selected. Please don’t Photoshop your Poly counter with a bogus count. Make sure you post all work in progress, including final poly counts and wire frames in the work in progress thread.
A Final Entry Thread will be up and waiting around the end of the third week/beginning of fourth week. Don’t forget to submit your work by posting it in the final thread.

Since the mention of recreating a character came up, i thought about the FlashBack game. I played a lot when i was younger and it sounded a good idea.

I'm setting out to create a character from a great book I just finished called "Mistborn." I have some great descriptions of the character, and it also leave quite a bit of room for the imagination. Cant wait to get started on this!

being a huge lord of the rings fan (books and films) I decided to tackle a character from that. One of the things in the film I was realy looking forward to seeing was the undead army, and the King of the Dead that dwell in Dunharrow. Unfortunatly it was just about the only element of the lotr film visually that really didnt look how I had imagined it.. so a redesign due? we shall see. here's a quick screeny of how Peter Jackson's lot conjured the long dead chappy up..

i know this might sound cliche at the moment, but i think i might remix master chief. his armor never really stood out much (very basic shapes with some greebles thrown in for detail) and to me he always seemed kinda weak. ill try and rebuild him bigger and stronger. but in the end it may not even look anything like him.

doood, dunno if i'll actually enter, but i'd love to revisit pyramid for a third time. and with such generous specs... someone could get hurt this time around guys.
but lol, don't we have enough fan art? seriously, 3 of the 3 most recent VS threads were fan art, including the one between me and klash. i'm not complaining, it just must be a hot topic i guess...

i decided not to think too much about it and jump right in. this is about 30 minutes of work just fleshing things out. im still not sure if this will be a female chief or a stronger bigger version of master chief. proportions can be dealt with later and about half way through ill start roughing out a concept. i just want to get enough done before i get bored working on the idea.

i realized master chief is already very feminine and its quite possible master chief is a girl. i wouldn't be surprised if they have a metroid ending to halo 3. ill probably make a stronger version of master chief, but in the process ill make a normal version first.

this is by far the fastest, easiest character i have ever created. ill take my time when detailing it, but i got the base mesh pretty much done in only a few hours.

nope, master chief is most definitely a dude. yep, his name is john. and he is not feminine. guns and rocket launchers = guy. man, thats like saying Duke Nukem might be a chick. geez...
on the other hand, there were female Spartans. so you could always go read fall of reach and the sequel books and learn up on em. anyway, female Spartans could be cool. if i remember correctly, she's the only one of the originals besides master chief that could have survived. good books, i recommend reading them if you like halo and scifi.

really cool topic. i still have no idea what to do. i'm thinking of D2 Necromancer, JC denton or maybe something from warcraft or lotr.
i might not finish tho. i just got the final assignment for my 3dsmax class for the next year or so. i need to creat a short animation in 2.5 months... ooh well, i'll see how it turns out. but i wil deffinitly keep an eye on this one mates :)

yeah i saw that metroid vs halo vid while researching for references. that was one of the coolest videos ive ever seen. it was really well put together and had a good mix of media allusions. i never played enough halo to know the guys real name and he/she seems pretty androgynous. that armor could easily hide average sized breasts and those shoulders could easily fall under female proportions. and after what ive seen from metroid, anythings possible. im not saying master chief is not a man, im just saying it could be a chick.

heres my start!
Ok, heres my concept. As I was finishing it up Photoshop froze up on me and i didn't get to save it out. To say the least i was shocked, but I managed to us my brain and hit print screen. The image got cut off cause I was zoomed in a bit when it froze. Lucky for me all the important stuff is still there! Hopefully I'll get the chance to finish it back up from when i last saved.
I also started modeling the foot!!

Robbie if you havnt turned your pc off yet check your temp directory in the windows folder it may have saved a copy for you (mine has on occasion for ps and maya)
im hoping to do a character from garth nix's "the old kingdom" trilogy... theres so many to choose! chlorr of the mask is who im thinking at the moment (ill try harder to get done on this one XD i had all the modeling for the environment one done i just got frustrated with texturing it...)

so here's my concept. The king of the dead of dunharrow I had always imagined as more of a celt. kind of a dead william wallace; kilts and leather armour, axes and claymores. not much in the way of metal armour. but what armour they have, and has survived the centuries is intricatly designed and embossed.
and one thing I shall certainly do without is the weird lime green glow that the dead of dunharrow had in the film :D

OK so I was in one of the other post sections where people had to make a recreation of their old game character and I got down and started workign on it like crazy, only to find out that the last day was Aug31... so... I uh.. have this concept that I am not gonna use, for now, but I am glad that it came up how it did. I am gonna share this with you guys and go back to the drawing board. hahah I feel dumb.

I figured it would be easiest to start with a character whose original implementation was not very memorable, so I looked through old comic books and found one who had an incredibly dull implementation compared to the other characters in the series. His name is Big Boy Caprice and he was Dick Tracy's arch enemy. Most of Tracy's other enemies had very distinguishing characteristics like Flattop (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flattop_%28Dick_Tracy_villain%29), or Prunceface whose face had deep vertical wrinkles. but Big Boy Caprice was only slightly overweight and of average height. So I'm going to try to make him larger than life to match the other Dick Tracy villains. Here's a pict of how Al Pacino looked when he portrayed Big Boy in the movie.

All I've done is a sketch of his head so far, but I plan on giving him a ridiculously oversized upper body---huge hands, barrel chest, and then give him an undersized lower body.

your model looks a bit cartoony.. like the features are (imo) unsuccessfully exaggerated. abs look weird, the upper arms look underdefined, and the shoes just look poofy. I am aware that its just a start tho'

simple_minded: Do what you think you can handle. Whatever you do decide early, that way you have more time to do what you need to do. Those that tend to decide later, usually do not finish. So its always good to start early. This is another reason why I am getting as much modeling done and out of the way, because those that know me, know I tend to spend too much time modeling and I dont get enough time to texture. This is exactly why I have been trying to go into a modeling overhaul early, especially since I have lots of reference on God of War. And I a huge fan and love playing the game. So, figure out what ya want to do soon, and get cracking.

I already make decision, for this contest i choose to redesign and rebuild Hiro Miyamoto, character from 'Daikatana'. Hiro is main character in an epic FPS game created by John Romero.

I hope nobody's suggested this but I'd like to redesign the templars for starcraft 1 and 2.

My concept is that the High Templars and Dark Templars after Brood War become one unit a "Gray" or "Twilight Templar." It makes sense to me. Since the current version of SC 2 includes a Twilight Archon which can supposedly be made by combining any two versions of the templar.
Will be posting a concept sketch in a couple of days - hope that's ok.

:) Hey guys - it's been awhile. While I'm totally busy with some pre portfolio at the school, my animation is going swimmingly. Since the rest of the thing doesn't worry me, I'm going to give this comp a chance. My redesign: an oldie but a goodie - the blue bomber!

Going to go in a direction like his Command Mission self. Tougher, darker, sleeker and cooler looking. One thing I'd like to do is actually make him look like a machine a bit, since he usually just looks like a kid in a fancy suit. I'll work on my design later this weekend, in between work, so I'll be back. Looks like a great comp guys - can't wait to see everyone's stuff!

First off, Mr.DeathSocks, if you're using Photobucket you can embed the images into your post. Just Ctrl+C the tag part of it and paste it in your post, Ctrl+V. And Brock Samson - nice choice! Venture Bros = Awesome show
Also, I was fooling around in Photoshop for like a half hour, and this is as far as I got with my idea before i need to shut down and get ready for work...

Taking him in a more Metroid/Halo direction, though clearly the linework is rough as hell:) Also, he kind of looks robocop-ish. I'm gonna make sure the armor has a very puzzle piece-quality to it, with some detailed linework to show just where exactly all the plates line up (there's some of that in his face plate). Also, there are going to be a lot of wires coming out of his back connecting into his head and arms and such. Not sure if I want to give him a helmet, but there's plenty of time to keep working away at this this weekend.

i spent a ton of time working on this to catch up to you guys....I think from this point im going to make the high poly and normal map it and then come back and do all the extras, currently poly count is 7678. I decided to do face morph for this character because its something I really haven't tackled (in detail) before. thank god I'm on break right now or I wouldn't be as far as i am now.

Would love to get some C&C, this is my highest poly char so far (currently sitting on 2k tris).
I've also done something new with this one by starting with the body instead of the head, since I always have some trouble getting the body right.
I will try normal mapping, but I can't promise that I'll be able to do it right since I've never normalmapped before D:
Oh well, on to the head! (unless any of you have any ideas for me how to improve the body, of course~)
Edit: Robbie, looking good! The arms and legs are awfully thin though, they look very fragile.

Yup, they are, in the book Mistborn, where this character is from, shes a very skinny frail character....her mid section and thighs are a bit bulky only because I'm making room for her cloths. Hopefully it will all look better once its normal mapped...if not I can always tweak the mesh...but for now I'm going to keep it the way it is.....

As for Mario, I've started with the face, but since I lack any reference pictures at all I ended up with this:

I'm pretty happy with the result so far, modelwise, but it doesn't look realistic or Mario at all D:
And it feels like I've seen him somewhere before, I can't quite put my finger on it though. Oh well.
Edit: Just made him a bit more "angry-looking" instead of confused, and it worked great. Won't bother updating the pictures though, hurr.
Edit2: Now he looks more like a rapist than Super Mario though :c

Vinsanity, it's been too long.
The character I randomly decided to do is Eomer from Lord of the Rings. It's been a while since I've done a character, and my concept/ model sheet making skills aren't the best- but here's my initial idea: (you'll notice the horse's reins come right out of his head- I'm working on that)

I wanted to make a character with a much different look and demeanor than the character played by Karl Urban in the movies. Not that I didn't like his performance, I just thought it'd be fun to make him different. And give him a bunch of spears.

looks good, i would stop using planes tho' since you got a damn budget of 10,000 tris. Just make the straps a solid object if ya hadnt already.
If you still have allot of tris to spare once you think your done with the model, tri smoothing it with meshsmooth or turbosmooth or whatever its called in max.

your god of war is looking pretty good agent-x, but i would probably make his nipples and his shoulder blades a little farther apart (they seem to overlap the trapezius muscles on the back) and maybe deflate some of the inner side of the biceps. otherwise, everything else is looking great. keep it up!

im thinking about changing my idea to something that allows more artistic freedom. something a little bit more obscure. if i edit master chief too much, no one will know its master chief. i was thinking about making the guy from time crisis 3 (the red haired, buff guy on the back of a plane shooting a minigun at you while you ride in a jeep on level 4). that guy was about as bad ass as it gets, but when i redesign him ill cover him in ammo and maybe some armor. my only problem is i cant find any photo references of him on the internet. all i can find is youtube videos with poor quality.

another quick update from me, jaw and helmet done. am going to have to start being careful of poly's. 10k is deceptive... you think you have a lot and it soon disapears!

i now understand why no photos could be found on the internet. this guy doesnt exactly stand still and say cheese! i took about 40 photos of him and only about 2 or 3 were any good. alot of them were myself getting shot or blown up with a grenade, and alot of the time he would have his huge gun in the way of his body. plus the jeep and plane are moving independently and the game makers never actually gave him a name. but i think i got enough shots to work with, and to show the world how badass this boss really is.

Oh, something happened when
I tried to target weld the wings
to the body. Some vertices weld
normaly but others don´t do that,
even if I use superglue, haha...

Brazucka: make sure the area your trying to weld, is weldable. Meaning the verts have an open side to them. Hard to explain. The vert should/could have 4 polys around it, but if you want to weld that vert to another vert that is not on the same plane, then that vert needs to have one of the 4 polys deleted.
I hope that makes sense.

Brazucka: See if there isn't any vetex overlaping. Try using collapse insted of weld. Also see if you can bridge the two edges...
If all fails, try detaching the element and use Connect.

Brazucka---> You can select the polys you want, detach them as a seperate object, then use the shell modifier. This will let you control the thickness of the clothing. When your happy with the results, delete the inside faces. Hope this helps!

yeah what freedie said, the spreading of the wings should be about double his length. Also i find it quite weird that those wings just "pop out" his back.

Doing some texturing. The seams on the pants are incredibly hard to get right though, I just can't seam to get them right (harr harr).

Brazucka the wings are bigger yea but am not sure...now he look like an bat guy and then he should have connected wings to his arms and lower part of wing should be connected to legs i think it could look better also not sure like it is that back view, maybe u can delete polys in middle of wings where is guys back that u can see it from back view and left wing connect from leg along to arm..the same with right.....but its ur model just say that it could look more natural peace:D

small update;
have started modelling the kilt and other parts of the bone structure.
also started looking at how I want to use opacity maps to make everything look threadbare and rotting.
the tartan texture is a placeholder. I need to make it look a lot more dirty and rotten :D

looking good rick, I think the blurry looks good so long as major details, eyes nose etc are sharp and crisp. the belt and the ammo strap look awesome, I really wouldnt want to mess with this lass ;p looking forward to seeing your finished concept as well as your model :D
just one crit of the concept (because I am picky.. and you asked for crits;p) her navel atm looks odd. like a moon crater on her stomach. :D

yeah, for some reason when i render in max, it looks light, then when i save to jpeg it suddenly turns black and dull. heres a screengrab with some wires.

You should think the skin tone.. it looks very -not- skin like.. Just using a darker/lighter colour will not work on skin, There are lots of things to think about when painting skin. id suggest using a bit more red's and blue's. to give the impression of blood underneath her skin. Rigth now it tends to go more to green-ish which makes it look very zombie like.
Also White lightening looks very boring, try to use yellow(sunlight) as a primary lightsource and blue/green(artificial light) as a secondary lightsource.
Omnicypher-
You could prolly save a bit polys by welding the middle row to the sides since they arent really helping the shape of the model. That pruple edge is also pretty useless right now. Also make sure to delete any unseen faces.

tank, his arms are looking very much broken right now. i know it's still wip, but that's the sort of thing you need to get knocked out early. you already have a lot of detail added in, and it's being built on sloppy fundamentals.

and overall, i havent added all that much detail yet. currently little over half the polylimit and still lots to do. most of it is on different objects.

Rhauk: yeah, you can do that, but scenes don't count towards the characters polycount, just the character and his props. If you wanted, you could do his brother.

You should think the skin tone.. it looks very -not- skin like.. Just using a darker/lighter colour will not work on skin, There are lots of things to think about when painting skin. id suggest using a bit more red's and blue's. to give the impression of blood underneath her skin. Rigth now it tends to go more to green-ish which makes it look very zombie like.
Also White lightening looks very boring, try to use yellow(sunlight) as a primary lightsource and blue/green(artificial light) as a secondary lightsource.

Still pretty rough, but the redesign captures the mood I'm going for. That is, showing Mega Man as a robot instead of a guy in a suit. Sure, he looks a bit Master Chief-ish or Robocop-ish (and the Mega Buster looks a lot like Samus' Power Cannon), but is any of that a bad thing? I've had a busy weekend of portfolio work and work-work, and I still have to go to this chick's going away party tonight, so no more concept work for me. I'll just refine it more when I do some model sheets, hopefully tommorow - really want to start modeling this guy! Any critiques and criticism?

First off you guys- some of you need to SLOW DOWN! I'm just working on a model sheet here and I'm already looking at people with full models done! -jk
Tank- When doing your model sheets make sure you use human reference as he is lacking proper form and that carried on to the model. It's something I have trouble with all the time and practice is the only way to get good at it.
Vince- I don't hate the colors as much as Rob but I can't tell what his primary color is, they're fighting for attention. Also if you have yellow trim on the boots, I'd like to see yellow somewhere else on his suit too.

Haha - the colors aren't final....except maybe the torso and right arm. I was rushing the color job. In fact, I was rushing the art for the legs in general - I don't know if I like what he's currently got. Figure the torso and the pelvis are good enough to go though - really gotta make the model sheets soon though. Thanks for the comments

Alright! Finally made a sketch I like.
My main goal here was to make him look older, less like a 12 years old boy with a girly face pumped on steriod! I think with this sketch, I've acomplished that. Basically made a smaller head, smaller eyes, more jaw. Also added a bit on the equipment like shoulder pads, took off the pants and under shirt, added pics on the boots and the wrist pads and there will be a chest pad where the actual belts that holds the sword, shield and shoulder pads. I want the colors of the actual cloth on top of the chain mill to be more of a darker green, otherwize, its too flashy for a fighter!

VinsanityV20 hmm well dont now if he look the same way really i saw hellsing movie very long time before i got only one reference image from original and use it like guide to make an base model and everything else i was searching google for gothic images also that face is not original i find it like additional variants....so i create from shoes to head what i find on net(ref images) and it hasnt anything to do with alucard.....like i sad my inspiracy was in gothic images what i try to apply on the base model....i already send an concept image second post of me and there i was showing all that stuff if i right remember it was on 6th page but not sure

Hi Everyone,
Really liking all the work you guys are doing -- I've decided against bananaman as I feel that he is a character that can't be improved :D ..So instead I've decided to do Gollum from LOTR. I read the books before the films were made, so I've always had my own thoughts on what Gollum should look like..I've done a quick sketch of his head - I'll hopefully finish it off at work today and upload it tonight..

eiadahnim: Well, when you work on contracts for client, the first thing to keep in mind is to acheive the clients vision of things. In this case, I treated myself as a client on this idea. Told myself some constructive critics about the original Link then look at how to make him more realistic in many diffrent ways. Keeping in mind he is some kind of elf. Another thing is that it is a really good practice in the overall, you are forced to draw your ideas, no matter how good or not you are, which will make you better, as well as modeling, texturing, rigging, posing, etc.... I'm just looking forward to enhance my work flow through your ideas and concepts making. Practice is the only thing that really can make you better, and a lot of reading on the subject!
Will do the Ortho view today, and post them sometime later on!

Everything's looking good guys. I think I'm going to hop in too, still deciding on characters. I was leaning towards a capcom character since I regret not getting in on the street fighter 2 character redesign comp @ polycount a while back, its good to see vin doing megaman, one of my favs. I originally wanted to do strider hiryu but I'm working on a male character for a class I'm in so I'm thinking for a female character I'd like to try my hand at gum from jet set radio :)

Okay i am having a problem. I'm almost at 1.3k Triangles and i got quite a bit off the model done! I meen, I got 10k triangles to spare and I want to use em all. Also I never normal mapped before. Whats the best presedure? 1st make a highploy and from the highpoly go to the low poly?

superb work everyone! would like to comment on each, but so many! been away for a couple of days and pages of great updates :)
Obibok really liking the model, especially all the accessories on leg and belt. and the cloak looks great. in terms of proportions, what initially grabbed my attention when looking at it against your referance, was that the shoulders are significantly lower than in the referance, especially considering your character is wearing bulky shoulder guards. maybe shortening the neck, and raising the shoulders could make all the differance :D

Some of you might be confused by the redesign part of this competition. Essentially you are just low poly modeling the existing character.
Thats not the goal. Im not going to point fingers or anything. Just urge some of you to really look at your character and your "redesign" and think, hmm, is this a different design, or did I just change his belt and his boots?
Would I be able to see the difference if it was in silhouette?
Thats all Im sayin.

Yeah, I'm thinking that I'm going to join with the choice between three. I was originally thinking of a Pokemon remake, a more serious ash or something, but the more I think of it, the more I want to do a character who just takes up the whole screen with awesomeness and awe, such as Bain or Venom. I think that they would have interesting remakes and I can't wait to hit up the creativity.
Oh btw, in response to the forum where we discussed the poly limit for games, I worked with Stainless Steel Studios, and the generic RTS used roughly 2000 polys (not tris) for a tank. I think 10k should be more than enough!
Looking forward to all the original remakes (oximoron there lol) Good luck all!

freedie: hmmm, I guess you're right. Now that I think of it, by the time Alucard is that transformed, he's usually somewhat obscured (with tendrils and all those eyes and sh** coming out). I guess you did a good job if I thought it was the real deal! Can't wait to see him with some final textures!

VinsanityV20 - the whole thing is looking way better...and I really like the legs. To be honest I kinda liked the color you had for the original rough concept. I think keeping the original megaman color is important and then just vary that color a tad in certain areas of megaman, and then through in a nice dark grey for accent and I think it would be pretty rockin'!
Heres a little update, I hope to have the rest of this model textured by tomorrow then I'm gonna start on the "extras." I think her breasts are to big for her figure so I'm going to seriously tweak that ASAP!

RobbieShe's looking much better now that she has some textures on'er, but yea - pretty anorexic dude. there's a difference between thin and anorexic - she's the latter (the definition in the arms shows malnutrition....honestly the legs are at a bad angle, so I can't say for sure why exactly that's odd. It's probably just the fact that her ankles are so damn small, they can't support the rest of the body?) ...and yea, I bet you're pissed at me now;) God I hate AIM....
Carlos hahaha - I didn't notice that he was, in fact, pointing to his shoes:) My default hand pose when sketching is that - guess it works out well since the post was about the redesigned legs. Nice catch, and nice model dude. There are a few too many tris for my taste though, but it's mostly clean. The ****** and knees look like they'll deform well, but the shoulders look a little messy and something's going on with the boots - look at the front render; the right boot is really bright for some reason.

carlosf yes that is armor. I believe it is like a belt armor thing he wheres around his waist. If you look up God of War, you will see thats exactly what he wheres. I am contemplating on doing those leather straps that hang down a different way, the same way they do in the game, which I believe is painting the straps and having a transparency map. This way I avoid having the darn straps penetrating through eachother and looking nasty. I like the seperate pieces and having the shadows, that looks nice and all but I am thinking why they didnt do in the actual game, and I do believe its because of that very reason of penetrating through eachother and collision and all that good stuff. So I am going to try the same thing and see how that works. Theres plusses to this, I will have more geometry to create more cool stuff.

make armor, accessories, weapons, and more details. I can go through 10k like water. I have no problem adding more geometry. Like in my model, I even have teeth, a tongue. In the game God of War Kratos talks, so I am trying to add all the same features. I will even add some of my own. I am going to try to make up an interpretation of Kratos how I would see it for a ps3 game. Us having the ability use 10k polys and a 2k texture is sweet. I am taking full advantage. Just add more detail to the model.

Regarding other's works, I have to echo what's been said that some of you guys should really push the designs more because they're looking a lot like the originals. Don't even look at the original characters, base your design on their written description or simply take all the elements from the design and rework them to be functional the way you imagine it. Think of this contest as an exercise in finding, or refining, your style and to make something completely original and baddass.

Oh, and Brazuka: I'd totally go with exactly what you said. Planes w/ alphas for the furry parts, and setting up bones for the Wings. These are low poly assets, so you really can't do anything else. There *might* be something else you can do for the Wings though - 'xforms', or something. DChap, you did it for the wings on your Angel of Death dude for the Gauntlet; what's that called? -, but I personally am unfamiliar with the technique. And if you still have some polys to kill, why not add some spikes onto your devil dude? I see a tough monster like him and I'm surprised there aren't spikes coming out of his back and arms...

Alright, so in the end, I chose Bane from the Batman series of comics (also in Batman and Robin the movie) I think that the amount of wires to pump bane up should have been increased and that he (although bad ass without any sort of weapon or armor) looked sweet with a new age gladiator-type armor. Agent-X: make sure your design of Kratos is a ReDesign, right now it looks like the same model you would find in the game.
Brazucka: you don't have to use every last tri. Infact, lookimg at your model, I would say your just about done. Trying to force more tris into a model is a bad thing.

Thanks man, thats nice to hear! Yap, its Link, with more armor, diffrent hood (its an actual hood on a shirt type like) there is a chain mill on it, I've also added a chest plate to protect the heart, even though he has a chain mill, you can never be to cautious when sword and magic figthing lol :P Redesigned the sword, need to work a bit on the design of the shield. Was thinking of making his hair brown instead of blondish... Maybe instead of bright green, I'd go for dark grey for the outfit, as green like that is way to noticable, you want the figther not to be spotted.

Rick, take a picture of a boot, in the angle you want, scan your picture (hope you have a digital cam to avoid scanning) then photoshop it on place, then trace it, add design! Sometimes, when I need body pose, I take pictures of myself in pose, then use it as references or even as template! If you have a digital camera at hands, nothing you can't do!

Goust: I really like the fact that you didn't gave her huge boobs, too many characters in games and all, they all have huge boobs.. But yet, when I walk down town ottawa, its really not like in those games and cartoon with ALL the womens busty :P

well, I googled a lot of faces, but couldnt really find Ortho material! I tried playing some AVI and pausing where I wanted, and screengrabing it, but doesnt work!
I don't want to go trough the trouble of opening it in Premiere and going after the frames lol :P
If I really can't find, I'll go search for a friend and take pics :P

Well I've already blown through almost half of my tris on just the head and hat, but I plan on putting him in a suit with crisp straight lines and he will have a ridiculously small lower body. Hopefully I can pull it off without having to scrounge around for polys.

Some really great work/concepts so far. There's also a few people who seem to be confusing re-designing for re-creating...this is the perfect competition to flex some creative muscle. So come on people, get out there and do some Re-designing before BigToe puts his toe down...nobody wants to see that happen. :)

Hey Guys, heres another update I got goin'. I fixed the boobies, (made them smaller and pushed them more together) fixed the ankles, and made some minor tweaks here and there. Also in this WIP I gave her a scowling face!!

EvilKnight - Wow is that Link? It looks like a much older, less happy version- which is a good thing. Very cool take on him- and I think it looks ok proportion-wise.
ianchaos- Yes that is a LOT of polys in the face- I'd tend to say that actually goes outside the boundaries of 'low poly' and is more along the lines of an animated movie.

With this concept I really wanted to put a lot of effort into giving him different kinds of cool clothes and armor, and really change his persona. I guess he's what Eomer might look like if he were in a Japanese RPG. ;P I also spent a long time on this model sheet trying many different styles, clothes, colors, and thinking how I'm going to model him and apply spec/ normal maps. Hopefully the prep results in a better final model.

First off, TheMadArtist; rock- the hell -on. Darkwing Duck RULES! Can't wait to see what you've got in mind for his redesign!

Here are some updates of ideas running through my head. I was thinking of going for a Spartan look like in 300. I am curious what you guys think. Please tell me yay or nay. The funny thing is when I play the game God of War looking at Kratos makes me think of a wild barbarian savage like character. I could use some input on what you guys think would look cool on Kratos.

agent x: try to put on his some body armor, cuirass armor it seems to be best way, i can see him with cloak too like the way the spartan look its cool also make him some big round shield.....also if u can try to play diablo II there u can see how good can barbarian look like in different armors....just try to search google for reference images u will definetly find something that perfectly paste to ur character

It's at 5552 tri's at the moment. I'll prolly save allot of tri by reducing the tris on the legs and arms. So i'm not too concerned about my tri count.
Btw I'm nurbs modelling this thing. Nurbs modelling is cool I like it allot, Basicly I made a really lowpoly base mesh put a hypernurbs modifier on the lowpoly mesh and edited where needed... pretty simple and nice results imo. Thats basicly why i have so many tris around the lower arms and lower legs.

Agent-X: If you look at him like a barbarian character, then make him in barbarian style. I like diablo II char, but i think a barbarian should not wear so much armor as in diablo II. I take Conan as the major ref. Look for reference and choose what is best suited for your char.

I'd go for the right one, but I'd probally make it even bigger, and have it come to a point and curve upward a bit.

Remember though, I want him to look sleazy. REALLY sleazy.
In fact, I just remembered an episode of Cold Case I watched some time ago (checked it up, it's called Lover's Lane) where there's a guy exactly like I want this guy to be.
For those who want to see who I mean, go to tv-links.co.uk. The episode is there somewhere. I'll check it out myself and see if I can get some good pictures of the guy (although the quality is sorta... crappy).

Meh, after looking at that episode I realize that I will probably never be able to achieve that level of awful. That man is so incredibly disgusting D:
There were few good shots of his face so I couldn't really copy him either, but I did some changes and personally I think Mario look much more disgusting now :3

nice looking mario so far. adding a little stubble and maybe some uneven discoloration in the skin tone might make him more sleezy and a double chin with some fat wrinkles on his face couldnt hurt.

ive been looking for tutorials on making wrinkled pants with good meshflow, but i cant find much of anything. i can barely even find any 3d characters that wear wrinkly pants. i guess no one really likes modeling pants, because most characters i come across usually have hard, mechanical parts like armor, or their so cartoony that wrinkles dont exist. i could just cover up my ignorance like everyone else and throw more armor on there, but that doesnt teach me much. once i figure out a good method im going to have to make a tutorial on it.

It's great to see someone else who wants to learn something from this competition! Personally I've never modeled anything higher than 2k tris, and to top it off I made this guy without my usual technique (box modeling). I can say for sure I learned a lot, and now I'm trying to learn how to paint face textures~
I've tried wrinkled clothes before, and it's not easy. I'm looking forward to that tutorial :3

Omnicypher: You're using max right???Can't be simplier
(This method is only good if you intend to do a normal map)
Turbosmooth your model up to 100000 polys at least .
Then use the Paint Deformation tool in editable poly.
Play with the brush size and use small brush strength values
to achieve desired results.
You might also want to play with the curve in the "Brush options" add a point or 2 on it and play with it,this way you can get crispier or flatter wrinkles.
Then all those details will show up fine in your normal map.
(And as for normal map there's plenty of tut out there
(3ds Max's user reference even cover the topic)
(Hide some polys and work on small parts if you feel max is suffering)

That's an interesting technique, Christian. Unfortunately, my computer gets REEEEAAAALLY slow when I'm going above 50k tris.. It's sort of like Mudbox though, isn't it?
Speaking of Mudbox, I really need to get a nice tutorial on how to export maps from it. My maps always end up awful and not working properly. >:|

ive seen it done that way, but i think theres a simpler, lower poly solution with a good meshflow out there and im going to find it. heres what ive gotten so far: it needs a little work, but eventually ill figure out the meshflow and simplify it to hopefully mostly extrudes, welds, and chamfers.

I think I'm done with the model, at 9991Tri, I'm pretty happy with the resultso far! I've added a small knife and the pouch attached on the belt! Going to start the UVs soon!
