Please read the Instructions Guidelines and FAQ's (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754) for this challenge first!

Well, here we go with this month's challenge, which is designed to be fun, creative and not too intensive, whilst giving the best entrants prizes and some great exposure in 3DCreative Magazine www.3dcreativemag.com.

This month, we have chosen the DINOSAUR: HERBIVORES ONLY!

http://www.3dcreativemag.com/challenge_resources/11_oct07_dinosaur-herbivore/main_small.jpg

Here are a selection of Images to give you some good references.

dinosaur-herbivore 01 (http://www.3dcreativemag.com/challenge_resources/11_oct07_dinosaur-herbivore/references/01.jpg)

dinosaur-herbivore 06 (http://www.3dcreativemag.com/challenge_resources/11_oct07_dinosaur-herbivore/references/06.jpg)

Please don't start new threads; all design sketches, WIPs, feedback, and so on, must go in this thread only. But, questions should be posted in this one Guidelines and FAQ's (http://www.threedy.com/site/forum/showthread.php?t=47754)

Final Images will go in the Voting thread, which will be created later in the month ready for Voting.

Have fun!

my concept is one of those build-it-yourself items. you can put the different parts together and hang it in front of your window. it is possible to move the legs, arms and head. the parts are stuck together by one of those staples that has two bendable wings.

Pretty much sure I'm done with the mesh. I think I am going to abstain from the tail spikes... for aesthetic reasons. So I'll prolly start on the texture soon.

some great WIP here! Are you in the texturing process? I just wondering any of you guys know/use Total Texture V11 (http://www.3dtotal.com/services/cds_new/v11.asp)?

Total Texture V11 which is a collection of Alienesque organic textures must be suitable for this process. From the weird and slimey, to more subtle toned skins, these textures are made up from many layers and elements captured by 50% photography and 50% hand painted. Many textures have several combined layers resulting in the examples you can see here. Of course like all of our textures they are 100% seamless and have additional hand crafted extras such as matching bump maps, many have specular maps too.

more details here, http://www.3dtotal.com/services/cds_new/v11.a

Worth to check it out?

Good luck!

oppps...sorry if the post is making you feel like that :) I was thinking as I've been told (secretly) the future 2 competitions might be Dinosaur again (but different groups etc) so I thought this information could be useful for the future winners to make the decision of choice for the prize they could choose if they won this time, so they could use this textures in their next entries!! that is my only reason to post above information!

you guys are so talanted! i've been watching these sylised challenges for a long time now.

I'm so impressed by all of your concepts, not only can you sketch and paint wonderful artwork but also you're all so good and character modelling.

Character modelling still after more than 10 years of modelling goes over my head, it's just something that's way out of my league. I've tried a few character designs before but nothing are amazing as all of your concepts.

I've always liked dinosaurs especially cartoon styled ones aswell. I serious wish I was better and modelling and texturing to enter this challenge.

But i'll just have to sit back and admire the very very creative & talented individuals in this thread! :)

Good luck to all, the entries so far are stunning :)

Kind Regards

Well, since I had some free time today I rendered the first full-sized layer ( the ground )...
The image is too big and the poly count is just too much for my PC to render in one pass :xx:

Going through retopology. Having major issues on which way to go about it. The Plates are a pain to retopo around. Hoping to be able to unwrap and rig in Max. Might have to forego this step for now. Might have made a mistake in my workflow for this. Maybe I need to back-step and rethink this out. Still, learning alot.

I made tons of progress over the last two days. It took a few friends to motivate me to keep going on this. Got a little discouraged as soon as other people started submitting their work. But I finished my scene. This is just a sample of my shader. It's just a modified toon shader, I was going for a Team Fortress 2 kind of look.

wernadette
25-10-2007, 06:57 AM
no need to be discouraged Nato_VanDookie! Your dino is great! But you lost a little bit of appeal comparing your model to the concept art. Maybe it would help if you try to get even closer to the shapes of the concept (lips, forehead, neck, eyes, nose (texturing), position of the leaves)... love to see the finished version :)

Some great work going on people.
Siege, love your model, but I think the dorsal plates seem a bit inorganic (in contrast with the cool organic feel of the body), very straight. Perhaps a little inner curvature might do the trick, and also some tapering (thicker bellow, thiner on top).
Just an opinion anyway.

Siege
25-10-2007, 06:26 PM
Very true DaddyDoom...Just a rough in for now. Seems I might have to change them anyways to get a workable mesh out of it. When I get back to the project hopefully I am armed with some new info.
