In preparation for the Crysis Demo, scheduled to be released for download today, I thought I'd start a thread on everyone's take on the game. There's no middle ground in this poll, but feel free to post your opinions.
Don't vote until you've played it!

I voted Famine.I hope that's the right option for "bad" :D Far Cry sucked badly imo,but everyone seemed to overlook all the bad parts of it in the favor of fancy graphics.Basically it was a mediocre shooter, where you ran through bushes and shot stuff. The atmosphere/storyline were completely missing, the AI was very weird most of the time, the objectives were VERY repetitive etc.The only thing i liked about that game was the graphics and flying with that glider :) The other vehicles were boring.Bad cameras, control etc. From what i've seen in some gameplay movies,Crysis is almost identical, only that you have a special suit.Which doesnt excite me at all,i dont know exactly why.Bottom line is that there are much better games than Crysis, but Crysis has massive publicity. And it's over-hyped.IMO ;)

I suppose I should have added NOT to vote unless you've played it.
Shame on you, neolith.

It doesn't work under XP, right?

It does, Freespace. It is DX9 compatible. Woohoo.

lol, I just recently played farcry all the way through for the first time. It was fun enough for a 'last gen' game. The story was a little disappointing. The missions were a little repetitive, and I couldn't get the graphics to display right with my 7800GT--so I played through with funky textures and strange lighting. It was a mess.

Storyline? If you mean a vague sensation that you weren't playing only to shoot bad guys, than yes,it had something that resembled that. But only in theory. And by repetitive missions i mean those objectives like "Go to that camp and steal some matches,go to that lab and flush their toilets etc".Most of the time you just had to go to a certain place/building and steal something.

thats what you do in every game?
and it sounds like you just have a real hate for the game just because it was overhyped :(
The story was entertaining i thought. It was like a corny action flick story. perfect for the game type.
BTW. It runs perfectly well on my 7600 gt lol

I'm at about 85% on the Crysis Demo Download. I'll probably sleep for a bit and then check the progress when my son wakes up for one of his nightly feedings. (I know what you're thinking...but he's an infant...not a vampire).

Voted Famine.
This is definitely Far Cry. I'm sure there may be some level variation down the road in the game, but it's still all about running through the jungle. That's neat, but come on, Crytek. Give us something better.
I've been playing the UT3 demo at 1680x1050 resolution and max settings. It runs great! Crysis, however, runs terribly, even at low resolution and low settings. The graphics are what would keep this game interesting, and it just isn't cutting it without an upgrade.
I'll be passing on this game until I purchase a DX10 card that will run it. In the meantime, thank God for PS3.

Nope,i really wouldn't have liked it even if almost no one knew about it.I dont have anything against highly promoted games, for examples i like UT's,FEAR,Battlefield's and even Half Life's.
But i never liked games where you just walk through the jungle and shoot stuff, like Vietcong and other games like that which i dont remember. And the story was just a big cliche for me,and it was very neglected by the producers.
But everyone has his own tastes in the end,i dont want to continue bashing Far Cry in this thread any more,i've done it enough by now :D

Exactly. I'm playing the UT 3 demo at full details perfectly, but I'm sure Crysis won't work ( since your rig is better than mine, I think... ). So, I'm probably going to check it out summer 2008, after my next yearly upgrade.

Oh I was too curious, so I downloaded the demo and checked it out.
It works with everything set to Medium ( I set textures, postprocessing and shadows to High ), on 1024/768 resolution. I'd estimate I get about 25/35 frames per second like this. I don't get any stuttering during gameplay, but when in cutscene mode ( you don't control your character ), the performance is awful. I don't know why.
So how was the demo. I give it 4/5 stars. Great work! I really loved playing the teched-up guy, wreacking havoc among north Korean soldiers. I even drove over a couple of chickens with a military Jeep ;P
It's not another Farcry. It's a different feeling, you're not being hunted by some Zerg-like mutants, you've got your super suit and you can freakin' SAVE the game this time. Your health will regenerate if you don't get shot at for a couple of seconds, which is really good.
Your suit energy grows to 100, and you can use it in four ways:
- Armor: this takes up energy when you get shot, to shield you from incoming fire;
- Speed: you move about twice as fast this way, and you can turbo sprint around 100 meters in a second, for the use of your suits energy ( really good when you need to retreat or get somewhere fast );
- Strength: throw crates and break trees, leap several meters into the sky ( or on houses for some awesome cover ), and punch everyone's head off, basically;
- Cloak: ( my favourite ) takes up energy to stay activated, and even consumes energy even faster the more you move; awesome to sneak up on enemies, or when you want to take a few seconds from a heated battle to retreat and recharge your health bar; when you shoot or get shot, the cloak is off; Combining this with Strength is a great way to play Predator.
Aside from the poor performance during cutscene mode, I had no problem playing the game, and it looked better ( on medium settings ) then almost anything I've played so far ( except for Bioshock and Unreal Tournament 3 ). I say check it out, you've got nothing to loose. Just make sure you've got a rigged up PC to carry the load.

Okay, I found my problem. It's this blasted 22" monitor. Playing at 1024x768 (or even 1280x1024) makes everything look pixelated and low-res. So, I entered my NVidia control panel and fiddled with the options, so now those lower resolutions don't stretch to fit the screen, but instead stay at typical monitor size. For instance, the 1280x1024 is now comparable to a typical 19" standard monitor screen.
The game looks MUCH better without the pixel distortion, and I actually found the game to be MUCH more enjoyable. But it's still because of the graphics.
It makes me anxious to buy a DX10 card.

Hold on a moment. Some guys found out it's a matter of tweaking some game files, and you CAN HAVE DX10 FEATURES, WITH A DX9 CARD UNDER WIN XP, so the game looks much much better ( with all those Vista exclusive features, bah ) and runs faster because XP isn't such a memory hog.

It looks like this only works for cards that still support DX10. But I'll try it just for fun.

****, i voted feast; this game's awesome xD
Love it, love it, love it, love it
I specially love the fact that i can punch big cars and boats with the strength mode on many meters. There was this cool raft/boat that was stuck on l and. Two hard punches and it was flying towards the sea, lol. Cool to ride it. I hate that the demo stops exactly when the huge alien comes and we're suposed to hunt it :D
Cool that my birthday is one day before the game releases.
Now: Try find out my birthdate ;)

I've gathered a few scientists to help with this. Is it... November 15th?
And try throwing a crate at trees. It's so cool cause they break right where you hit them. Also, if you get close to an enemy, fress F, and you'll grab him by the neck and if you're in strength mode you can smash his head with a fist. Oh the violence!
DahWan

You can also just shoot the trees with a gun, or you can hit it several times with your fist in strength mode.
What i had most fun with was throwing grenades into houses, or jumping on houses with a car. Or just jump onto a house and hit the roof with strength mode =D

it's gay though. It only works on certain trees. I was shooting vines, and thicker trees...and nothing happened. And also, nothing happens when shooting rocks. Chips should come off..
I preffered the more frantic "hunted" feel from farcry..you feel too much like a super soldier in this one..
ah well...
4.5/5 for an honest review
3/5 for a personal review

This was the very first level. Easiest level in the game. They've established how advanced the suit is and what sort of team your character is part of.
Now comes the alien invasion and the rest of the game. I don't think you'll feel like a supersoldier anymore, Josiah. :)

man..I gotta say: I love it!
I allready preordered and it will be mine as soon as it comes out! I can't wait!
The fact that I can set the settings on "high" and it still runs perfect makes it even more cool!
I think "very high" is only if you use vista, right?
(i'm even thinking of using vista just to play this game in that mode)
But damn...the graphics are just breathtaking the way they are now!
All those stories about vista problems...I just think you need a proper pc and then it should be fine!

I thought Farcry was pretty good. The levels were not only sumptuous, but very well designed. Who can forget the later level where an exit from the corridor opened out into a bridge crossing a ravine, while a helicopter dropped troops. The game was flawed in some ways, but I really liked it - there were many ways to go about a mission, although it never really felt like you were carrying out a mission. I can't even remember what the point of the game was.
I played Crysis in work on my quad core PC at the highest settings, and it impressed me.
The thing that didn't impress me was the now overly used grunt marine type characters. I really liked the way you could carry chickens round as well!!

Finished the game allready...i'm kinda dissapointed that it was so short :(
But...the graphics are awesome!
I've read that this is #1 of a trilogy (that explains the dissapointing end).
Btw...does anybody know how I can run the Crysis Editor on windows xp x32?
