Hello!
Our third challenge will run until Christmas with a nice and easy topic:
Day to Night
What do you have to do:
We will give you a raw image (see bellow) and you will have to turn it into a night scene, respecting the following requirements:
- You can ONLY use the image we provide you as base. No other image please.
- You cannot make changes to the main architecture
- You must have artificial lights (windows, light poles etc.); Not just an empty night scene, mkay?
- You can change the sky as you wish to reflect the night; You can add stars for instance or replace it with another one.
- Don't make it pure dark as we still want to see details in there :)
Here's the Hi-Res Raw Image (http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/3109/78640787604370dt8.jpg) (courtesy of sxc.hu ):
Deadline: 23th December 2007
Here's some inspiration:

Important: The winners will get the opportunity to publish on-site and in the magazine a making of article (if they want to). Considering this, please keep wips if you intend to create such an article.
Have fun! :)

Hey suirebit, you say "You can ONLY use the image we provide you. No other image please."
But we can use your image with another elements like trees or plants etc...
Suirebit-3DT
19-11-2007, 04:42 PM
you can add elements like a new sky but you can't change the architecture of the image. So no you can't add trees that cover the church....the idea is to make the transition of a given stage where actors play, without changing it's 'layout' too much :)

Hi suirebit... so that means we can't also adjust the matte and make it bigger right? Like making the image a little bit bigger. Bummer, I was looking forward to that.
Suirebit-3DT
19-11-2007, 05:41 PM
Hmm, haven't thought to that to be honest;
Ok, as long as you don't alter that base image too much, you can add things to the left or right to make it bigger.

Hey Suirebit, glad you're still on with the Matte contests, i'm hoping i'll get a little time to give this one a shot :)
Yeh extending this would be a good idea, though the distortion my cause a few issues.

Hey, glad to see you here Dave :) Yes, the distortion might cause issues but you can fix it if you go for extension (and might get a bonus at judging for that :D)

Well i'll see what i can do :) i've already jumped right in, let's see how long i can keep it up, it's pretty late and my brains literally throwing white fluffy sheep at my head, if i don't sleep soon i'll end up knocking myself out :)
I'm sure i missing a great big 24pt link that says Post work here, but where do we post?
Later,
Dave.

Thanks suirebit, so matte extension is okay just as long an there is no big alteration on the architecture got it! There is one little bit that is annoying me though, that kids with the bike, I know they can help with the scale, but would it also be okay if we can delete them? just checking, after all most real mattes doesnt have people right?
To everlite and all who plan to join... good luck!

Ok, I'm gonna be a nag and add another question to the project specs...
It will be done for Christmas time, so... can we add stuff in accordance to the holiday season? Or at least some snow? I ask this because snow would also accumulate on rooftops. (I know, I've read the part about not modifying architecture, but I'm asking anyway)
Suirebit-3DT

that's for another challenge, shush...you ruin the element of surprise :D

i supposed that adding snow would be ok as it doenst change the architecture, what will it be suirebit??

22-11-2007, 12:22 PM
sorry guys, i'll speak in behalf of suirebit, since I did see his response to the same query...
The snow is not allowed, and I guess that might include your lights Nocturn8, but I guess you have to ask suirebit about that.
I'm pretty excited about this! But I can't do anything not after december 10... so good luck to all!
Suirebit-3DT
22-11-2007, 12:46 PM
the topic is day to night, not season change - this will be the topic of another challenge :) so no snow, mkay?
But don't worry, you'll be able to paint snow pretty soon if you want it so much (maybe even at the next challenge ;) )
Nocturn8> you may continue with those lights. Artificial lights are actually a requirement and those xmas decorations can be considered to fall under this category ;)

i have a question.... if i add some little parts to the building, will it consider as a changes in the main structure or is it ok? (like fire holders, lamps, something like this)
thanks :)
Suirebit-3DT
22-11-2007, 07:30 PM
Try to use what's in there. If you really must you may add a lamp here and there, but I prefer not to.

Hey guys, does anyone recognise where this church is located? what part of the world it sits in?
Thanks, Dave.

everlite: if you ever find which church this is please tell me, i'm looking for it too...
Ok, after a very long search, I found what church this is - The Church of St Catherine, in Vilnius, Lithuania! :D
So far I only found pictures from diffrent angles, like this one: LINK (http://flickr.com/photos/v-me/131248173/) But no images show what's around it...
I did find a picture of it at night though, which is pretty cool :haha: ANOTHER LINK (http://picasaweb.google.com/aleksandras.svabas/VilniusAtNight/photo#5091518292019773186)

it's your problem how you use the image as long as you follow the rules and deliver a final of at least 1280 px for web and full size for magazine :)

Hey Suirebit,
I hope to and might actually get time for this one since the deadline is still a few weeks away. As usual though, I have a question...:D
Can the perspective (camera distortion) be straightened and fixed - this wouldn't be changing the architecture at all so I want to be sure...can you confirm if it's ok or not to straighten?
I can't really see this being used in a film at this distorted angle - imagine someone walking over to the door on the left...the further away from the camera they get, the more slanted they would be walking - it just wouldn't be right at all...pretty funny though! :) (unless, of course, it was for a film where odd perspective was wanted...but since we didn't get any kind of brief on the 'imaginery film' this is for, I don't know!)
I'll do my best to enter either way but just so I know where to start..
Cheers
Stephen

actually fixing the perspective is a bonus :) that is it's optional, but if you do it you'll have a white ball :D

Alright, those who already posted finals please don't hate me :P Since all the 3dtotal crew is out for holidays, I've decided to move the deadline to 31th december (new year's eve) ' cause there's not gonna be judges until then anyway; Don't know how much that helps ya' since nobody works on christmas, but maybe there are guys who wanna finish it but had no time...
so one more week for ya ! ;)
New Deadline: 31th December
