Please read the Instructions Guidelines and FAQ's (http://forums.3dtotal.com/showthread.php?t=47754) for this challenge first.
Okay, so here we go with this month's challenge, which is designed to be fun, creative and not too intensive, whilst giving best entrants prizes and great exposure in 3DCreative Magazine.
This month we have chosen SWIMMING DINOSAURS! (Although there's technically no such thing; dinosaurs apparently lived on land only. If we want to be picky we should really call them "Plesiosaurs" or "Ichthyosaurs", but let's just call them "swimming dinosaurs" for the sake of this competition and to keep things nice and simple!;))

Please don't start new threads: all design sketches, WIPs and feedback must go in this thread only; however questions should go in the following thread: Guidelines and FAQ's (http://www.threedy.com/site/forum/showthread.php?t=47754)
Final Images go in the Voting thread, which will be created later in the month ready for Voting.
Have fun! :) There are some pretty cool images on the Net for this subject, so enjoy your explorations! Should be a fun one this month! Enjoy!! :)

O.k. well I think I will give this one a try. Here is a quick concept sketch that I think will work.
http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/7629/swimmingdinosketchmr1.jpg
I will try and get this worked out on time.
p.s. I found a good reference site where you can find details on most species.
http://www.palaeos.com/Vertebrates/Units/220Lepidosauromorpha/220.000.html
Just scroll down to the bottom and search through the navigation to go through the various species and their details.
Here is a quick rough model. I think I will have to change it to get it to look more interesting and friendly, but it is a start.

Re designed head...
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/802/dinohead1uo4.jpg
And a quick render. This render is crap by the way. Just a quick test

Yeah, I like using blender, though I also use XSI and silo, I like to support the OS project, as it gave me my first taste of 3D. I am hopeless at the moment though So I am hoping that I can improve my skills with this project, such as texturing, posing and rendering, tasks I usually give to XSI for the ease of use, but good place to start.
I have decided to change the head of this character as he looks a little too fierce where should be more placid.
Thanks raiden1983. Yes his tail is also not anatomically correct, as with the head, will get looked at.

@nocturn8:yes... your´e right... i will change the bubbles...

@Noviski, this looks really fun, I think you have captured the warm relationship between the Scott and nessie really well. Awesome!
I am not sure why, but maybe a little more work needs to be done on the background scene. I doesn't seem to match the same style as the characters style, which like I said is awesome. Maybe it needs to be a bit more toony... I don't know. Great work anyway.

YamFries... You came with all that weirdness from the "Dark Side" comp and made a really freaky dino. Looks like one of those creatures from the depths. You could loose the tongue, and add him a head lantern like those creepy fishes.
Cool work.
ianchaos, love your rubber dino :D
Anyway, tnx for the kind comments on my buoyosaurus, and here's an update. I guess that I'm done with the character, and I'm starting the scenery now.
Hope you like it.

yeah I'll probably take out the tongue.
DaddyDoom: I promise the low-poly: creature mount will not be creepy:roll: Nice start.

Eheh YamFries, let's see what comes outta there :D
Well, here's another WIP screen grab from me. I'm almost over with the scene, and doing a first serious render to see what must be improved. I'll later add some elements on Photoshop.
The plot for the scene is: Buoyosaurus in Love with a Buoy.
Hope you guys like it :)

OK I'll finally get around to posting a bit of progress. Here's a base mesh, soon will get to posing and then its off to zbrush!
DaddyDoom: you're piece is great, very amusing!
Yam Fries!: very nice and creepy, like has already been said it looks like something from the depths. It's great. Also great to see another Oregonian on the boards!
here is a quick render with green ambient occlusion
i plan on connecting the *pectoralis major* muscle to the flipper. it looks isolated.

DaddyDoom - I love the Buoyosaurus...great layout, fun models. I would suggest changing the shoreline from a gray to perhaps a tan/sandy color, but other than that it's great.

guys, ahm... I need some help.... I finally had an idea for my entry and before I do some sketches I think I need to ask you a guys if it is allowed to render the final image with toon shades/shading? I do hope you could help me with this one. But, i'm not quite sure yet if i'm going to use toon shades... just preparing myself. Times ticking so I think I'd better hurry! Hoping a reply soon. Thank you very much and good luck to all
DaddyDoom
20-12-2007, 12:15 PM
I believe you can. The important part is the modeling, and toon shading is as valid as a "normal" one, so...
Good work with your entry!

stroggtank: Absolutely fantastic! I love the expression and the colors. It translated perfectly into 3d!
jizrik: Model is great, translated really well as well into 3d. Looking forward to seeing the final textures.
grafixsuz: Your entry is coming along nicely, I was going to comment on the shadows from the bubbles throwing off the perceived light source, but it seems you have updated your post and fixed it before I could reply :)

Hi there, I'm new here and I am working on this. I have made it with Maya at my Dad's PC.

Howdy GARBO X. Welcome to the forums :)
You just have to read the rules, which are always available on the first post of each challenge thread. There you'll find the info concerning the deadlines and all the other stuff.
When the challenge is over, a new thread will be created by the 3DT staff, where you'll have to submit your entry.
Until there, have fun doing your dino :D

Stroggtank: Yeah, you are right,he is inspirated by mosasaur:)..you have very nice model,I looking forward to see whole scene:)
grafixsuz: Really nice job,I like it...to bubbles:I think they have too soft specular and they shoudn't cast shadows(if shadows are that dark rounded area on dino and ground)
