Required In The Final Post (1 post per entry):

- 1 x Winning pose shot. This image can only have "One" pose of your character. No multiple shots or different angles. Just one!

- 1 x Beauty shot of your character. Feel free to put multiple angles of your character or just one big version or your character on this page. Even better, try to composite a nice art piece similar to the ones in the Winners' Gallery. Be careful how you do this though, simple is often better. It’s up to you.

- 1 x wireframe shot of your character. Feel free to put multiple wireframe shots or just one big wire frame shot on this page. It is up to you. Must have polycount included.

- 1 x texture sheet that includes all your used sheets squeezed into "one" sheet.

- Concept Sheet (Only if you have a concept)

I have to explain a little.

yam fries. You managed to hit a nerve there - I recently read Liseys Story by Stephen King and the scary reindeer beast somes pretty close to the mental image I had of the dark-half creature thing in that(still sends shivers down my spine ) top notch :D

lordpisang - you need professional help :p
I'm confused, upset and amused by your character which I think makes it a resounding success.

gordon freeman - you also hit a nerve, I'm terrified of werewolves - I probably won't sleep tonight and it's all your fault. A classic idea executed beautifully.

everyone else - great stuff and don't let the fact I didnt vote for you put you off voting for me :D

Concept (0-10) (8) personally i liked it better without the face mask, but good either way. clothes look great, and arms make for good lighting in any condition. very asymetrical, adding alot of interest
Model (0-10) (9) arms seem to bow in slightly from back view, but all the muscles, clothes and shoes look great
Textures (0-10) (7) diffuse skin could use some more variation, but the normals were really well done. the face cloth seems like it could have used an extra wrinkle or two leading to the nose area.

overall, great job man, he seems like a character i would enjoy playing as in a video game. kinda reminds me of soul reaver.

Second Place-

Member Name: Yam Fries!

Concept (0-10) (9) very original, creepy concept, yet very plausible and realistic!
Model (0-10) (7) some of the edge loops on the antlers could be put to better use on the forearms and the elbow/forearm region seems a little less anitomically correct than the rest of the model. the overall stance seems a little front heavy, but you could leave that up to the animators.
Textures (0-10) (8) alot of detail and variation all over, i especially like the muscle rips. the antlers might benifit from a little more specularity.

everything from the beedy eyes, to the sharp jagged teeth, to the ripped festering flesh, creeps me right the f##k out! nice job!

Third Place-

Member Name: Gordan Freeman

Concept (0-10) (4) not the most original concept, but still a classic.
Model (0-10) (6) the chest, shoulders, and forearms could use some better meshflow following the muscles. the back of the feet could use an extra edgeloop to help deformation and some of the larger alpha planes around the ****** could use an extra division and some curve to randomize things a bit. ears are very pointy.
Textures (0-10) (7) the normals look pretty good, but the specularity maps could be brighter and have more contrast, especially around the nose, eyes, and mouth. it seems like you made up for the dark spec maps by cranking up the specularity variable, so the render still looks good.

although its not all that unique, it is well executed and classically embodies the darkside concept just as well as Dr. jeckle and mr. hyde would.

this was a fun contest, i learned alot, and there were alot of great entries. until next comp,
peace!

Honorable Mention- Marv

This four guys and Merlyn were really hard to narrow down. But great job to all! Sense I have no clue about your guys "normal" personality, its hard to say what your dark side would be. But the ones I chose, seemed like the best representation of ones (anyone’s) dark side could be.

For example:

Robbie 1000 seems like a tortured soul.
Gorden_Freeman seems like a beast when a full moon comes out.
Goust maybe torn between two sides.
Marv seems like an elite devilish type.
Merlyn...... Merlyn has fantasies that no one can understand...... lol

But congrats to all for finishing, great job everyone!

Concept (0-10) 9 = Concept is good, it conveys the main featues of the model, and the idea behind it.
Model (0-10) 9 = Of all the models in this competition this one screams next-gen. Looks perfect to me. Excellent modelling and details. Only thing that may be an issue, and hard to see in the render, is the hair on the back of the head looks a bit strange. I think the only reason that is noticable at all is the fact that otherwise, the model is so realistic.
Textures (0-10) 10 = Excellent textures. The normal maps are smack on and the anatomy there looks perfect (Love the pants texturing as well). Love the self illumination - I can just imagine this as a main character of a game, and walking through a dark room, noticing the self illumination and saying "holy crap, that looks awesome".

Second Place- Tie

Member Name: Marv

Concept (0-10) 9 = Clean, clear and to the point. It includes everything of importance, with no extras.
Model (0-10) 9 = Also clean and to the point. Just enough polys to do what needs to be done, and nothing needless thrown in just to reach the poly limit for the comp.
Textures (0-10) 9 = I think the textures here are great. Simple identifiable colour scheme. Normal mapping the folds in the clothing looks great, and all the folds appear to be are where they should be.

Second Place- Tie

Member Name: poopipe

Concept (0-10) 10 = I've got to give this one a 10, because even after seeing it a few times the concept still creeps me out a little. :) It's 100% in line with the theme of this competition.
Model (0-10) 9 = This model has issues. The anatomy is all wrong.. there are far too few arms, and such a tiny - Oh wait, I think that was intentional. But serious, awesome job. Sweet tri count for a model with 6 arms and 30 fingers.
Textures (0-10) 8 = Wicked job again. Normal mapping rocks, and the stockings look great. I'd have liked to see bare hands, I think it would have made it easier to see the fingers and stay closer to the concept- bare hands have more sensation than gloved hands. I bet it saved some texturing time compared to doing an texture space compared to doing all those hands though :)

Honourable Mention to- Everyone.

All the models in this contest were so awesome I had to use the theme for the contest, and execution of that concept as the main criteria.
Gousts model is the most solid and perfected. poopipe and Marv have concepts that are so close to the theme (MY darkside), and demonstrate that feeling the strongest, so they had to be chosen, and each is executed equally well. Yams Fries renders knock my socks off, and Gordon Freeman's werewolf is more convincing that the ones in the original Underworld movie. And anyone that even finished did better than me, lol.

Sorry I didn't get mine finished on time, hope to see you all at the next one!

First Place:: Goust: 26

Concept: 9
Model: 9
Texture: 9

Concept: I think your concept was the strongest, it as aspects of visual goals as well as anatomical references, kudos.

Model: Your modeling skill is great stuff, You had a great arrangement of polygons and really made it look good for the end result.

Texture: In the end, it was your texture that really made your work set out, not only did you use a nice diffuse map and specular map combination without one overpowering the other, but you also used space wisely and kept it optimized for the most part. Good work I hope to see more of your stuff here shortly.

Second Place (TIE):: Robbiek1000: 24

Concept: 6
Model: 10
Texture: 8

Concept: I think your concept could have been a little more detailed, overall, it was great to determine the anatomy of your subject, yet the actual part of the concept is to visualize your end-game production. The anatomy pic is more like a WIP piece, but helpful just the same.

Model: Your layout of polygons is impeccable, I hold the skill to high regards. The model is well planned out with little to no discrepancies within the frame. You kept it simple and it allowed for a anesthetic piece.

Texture: The texture was good artistically, loots of detail in the actual diffuse map as opposed to relying on the normal (a common error that I find in most of my recent work) Given the insane amount of texture space that we were allotted, It's nice and compressed and shows a decent skill in arranging you texture for optimization.

Second Place::(TIE) Gordan_Freeman: 24

Concept: 9
Model: 9
Texture: 6

Concept: I really like the depth of your concept, it shows the detail that you were going for in the final piece. The only reason you got a nine here was that your piece didn't quite allot for the complete anatomy of your 'dark-side' and this corresponds to the comment I have for your model

Model: I absolutely admire your upper chest and head structure and the poly layout around the shoulders and arms, it makes for convincing animation I'm sure. However, you lose me on the legs and feet. The legs seem to cylical and the shape of the balls of the foot and on to the toes does not convince me that it's part of the same model. I think in comparison to the hands and arms, the feet are really stubby and look too much like the paws that you were going for. I'm sure it was very much intentional, but I'm thinking the toes should have been a little more menacing. Good job regardless

Texture: Your texture is very detailed and I really like the capability you show here to demonstrate detail. Your optimization is very low though. I like the approach you take to the mapping or your UVWs in the sense that you try to align it to the true wireframe as much as possible, but making it so that all of your UVWs fit like a puzzle within the frame given allows for more detail in the desired spots with less texture space if you so desire. Like Robbiek1000 though, the texture space given was insane, so it's not too terribly off.

TheWinterLord, your math doesnt work out, you gave Yam Fries a higher score (21pts) then Goust (20pts) but Tam Fries was 3rd and Goust was 2nd???

1st Place - jam_fries!
concept - 10 - very awesome concept!
model - 9
texture - 8

2nd Place - goust
concept - 8
model - 9
texture - 9 - good use of texture space

3rd Place - gordon_freeman
concept - 6 - concept feels somewhat unoriginal in comparison to the others
model - 8 - feet/lower leg area feel somewhat boxy
texture - 7 - Beautiful color and normal map work! if only utilizing the texture space a bit better. Both the legs and the head could have probably been broken into their own uv shells because they are under fur anyways and any seems wouldn't be noticeable.

Concept (7-10) – I’m a huge fan of seeing concept art for any final piece. So I had to deduct points for that, but over all I really love this entry to me it’s the most professional entry here.

Model (10-10) – The mesh looks awesome. You did a fantastic job with the joints and an over all bang up job.

Textures (9-10) – Again what an awesome job with the textures, its all very well placed, your not wasting any room and the final result is pretty good. I do think the spec map makes him a little to shinny, but that’s the only thing I disliked.

Concept (6-10) – I’m very happy to see concept art with this entry, but I think the over all design is lacking. I keep wondering how this has anything to do with a dark side contest, fire, ice, and an anime inspired wardrobe?

Model (8-10) – I’d have to say despite the “interesting” concept the model is really good, and I admit I save a picture of the wire frame shot for my own collection of reference, mostly for the boots and waist section. Also gotta point out the hair, good job!

Textures (7-10) – You know I don’t really see any problem with the texture. Its nothing special but it does the trick and that’s all that matters.

Concept (5-10) – First off, actually concept art = awesome. Although I do believe your one of the few entrees that really stuck to the core of this contest the concept is a little dull compared to some of the other entries and doesn’t stick out as well.

Model (8-10) – Again another great entry with great mesh flow, I’ve got no problems with it.

Textures (6-10) – Over all I think the textures aren’t bad. You did a great job of laying down your UVs and you didn’t waist any space at all, but for some reason the textures just really don’t pop out at me at all and his lack of eyebrows disturbs me.

I’d like to give some other small critique to some of the entrees that are currently winning that I feel need some improvement, and here is why…

Yam Fries – OK, so I admit it’s a cool concept and pretty freeky, but your mesh is, sorry to say, awful in my opinion. I just can’ understand why the solid mass on top of his head got all the polys. There are so many better places those polys could have been used, for instance the fore arm, the shoulder, and the thigh. Also you need to work on placing your UVs, as of now your wasting just a tad to much space.

Gordon_Freeman – To be honest it’s a pretty good entry over all. I am a bit surprised you need all 10k tris to complete it but the model looks good. I do think the feet need a little more attention though. My biggest concern is your textures. It’s an interesting way of unwrapping a character but highly inefficient and I think you did it that way because you were afraid of texture seems, am I right? Over all, the concept (unless you really are a werewolf,) excessive use of polys, and the texture just doesn’t put you into my top 3.

Poopie – Creepy, very disturbing, but there are some things that just need worked on. The mesh flow and model aint bad, but its pretty messy in the torso area. The other thing you need to work on is your textures. Sure he’s naked but when those flats are placed on the model nothing pops and I think most of it is your spec map, it’s honestly non-existant. I think your relying way to much on your normal map to do all the work for the rest of the maps, and it shows.

Now I’m not saying I’m perfect cause by far I’m not, but the main goal of these contests are to get better at what we love to do, and I’d expect any one of you to give me the same type of hard love I’ve given.

Dropping by to say a few things. I’d like to vote but my internet won’t load all the images :(. Damn 56k. I’ll say a few things about the images that did come up.

Robbiek: Interesting concept, slightly disturbing. I think somebody already mentioned this earlier but I think one of the main things that hurt your entry was the soft looking model and skin texture mixed in with the random, seemingly purposeless staples and tubes. Even though you did have a normal map, it didn’t really seem to do too much probably because of the characters long and skinny limbs. I think one thing you could of done to help your model out a little more is to create those tubes and circles as separate objects and tack them onto your model. It’ll give those areas a little bit more volume and something to help break the silhouette from being something so simple. Distribution of UVs could be a tighter.

BigToe: That face really has a Silent Hill-esque feel to it. Pretty cool. I think the thing that stands out the most are those random cuts. You have a model that is somewhat realistic but the cuts look very graphic. I think something that can help blend it in is to have some skin discoloration near the wound area and perhaps have some of that green ooze out of the wound. The shinyness of the inside makes it look like a fresh wound, viscous MMmmmm. One other thing that kinda bothers me are those shoulder pads. A rounder pad with something cushioning the shoulder would fit him better I think.

Marv: Really stuck with your concept. The mesh looks pretty solid and the UV looks pretty good too. The only thing is maybe work on the concept a little more. At the moment, the character doesn’t have anything flashy to draw interest.

Omnicypher: There’s several things that are hurting this model as it is now. The first is proportions. You have fully built, muscular legs attached to a malnourished, skinny top. Most of the time, it’s should be either or. I think the super skinny stomach is kinda ugly too, not just saying this model but for any other. The arms and hands look a bit too small for the character. The other thing that’s kinda hurting it is the texture. It’s one solid brown. Color variation and contrast are your best friend when texturing. UV’s could be layed out better.

Goust: Nice model from the images that I can see. Your poly distribution looks really good. The only thing I can see that can be tweaked is that circle on his belt. Not sure if they’re adding or not but you could save a couple of tris to use elsewhere.

Merlyn: I remember seeing your concept in the comp thread. Personally I liked those proportions better than the ones here. Your mesh looks pretty good for the most part. UV layout looks okay. What’s spec-power? The only thing I can really say is to work on the concept. Like Marv’s character, there really isn’t much here to keep you interested in the model and suffice the large buget.

SetChaos: Cool concept, a tim burton –esque feel. The finished model looks fairly good with plenty too look at. The mesh can use a more even poly distribution though. The head, scarf and shoes have a fairly good amount of polies in them (some of them unused) while certain parts are barely given any attention (like the arms and torso). Your textures look kinda sloppy.

Yam Fries: Hey great concept, I’ve never seen anything like it before. The finished product looks pretty good for the most part. Meshwise, poly distribution could be a bit better. You have a little too much on the horns while places like the forearm and the bones on the back could use some polies to help smoothe them out. Can’t say on your UVs b/c photo won’t load.

Tuxedokat: Nice render. Can’t say much else cause the photos won’t load.

Poopipe: Interesting. Your mesh looks pretty good. UV layout can be better though. The only thing I don’t like is the faceless head with filler zbrush marks. I think some kinda of bondage mask could help make it tie in with the rest of the theme you have going for the model.

That’s all the photos that I can see. It would have been nice to see the rest, especially Gordon Freeman since your entry seems to be contending for a position. Welps, hope my critiques help you guys, see you in the next comp thread.

certainly can't argue with the stuff on textures, I've never done a proper normal+specular effort before so it was all a bit seat of my pants and I'll definitely keep what you've said in mind for the next one

with the torso..
Looking at it again I can see where I could have shaved quite a few polys for no real loss of appearance - I cut a lot of the polys in after applying the normal map to bulk it out a bit and I wasn't being careful on account of having 3k left to play with

sounds like good advice to me - thanks :)
